Ten years ago, federal agent Samantha Moon was the perfect wife and mother, a typical soccer mom with a minivan and suburban home. Then the unthinkable happens, an attack that changes her life forever. And forever is a very long time for a vampire.
Now in VAMPIRE FIRE, private investigator Samantha Moon’s new client asks her to find a dead guy—a dead guy she knew. It doesn’t take Sam very long to figure out that something wicked this way comes—very, very wicked—but there’s no way she can walk away from this case…
However, Sam’s client doesn’t want the guy’s body—he wants his soul. And if Sam fails, then two others will die. Now Sam must track down the spirit of a dead man who’s hiding from his destiny and hand him over. She doesn’t even know who else is at risk, but she has to choose whether to protect the soul of a dead man or protect others whose lives are at stake. Worst of all, she’s forced to work for someone who may just be evil incarnate.
When tragedy strikes, Sam has only until sunset to save a life. As Sam races to find the victim before it’s too late, it will take all she has in her to beat the devil at his own game…
VAMPIRE FIRE (Vampire for Hire #12) is J.R. Rain’s first exciting novel in The Devil's Triangle, a paranormal thriller trilogy within the Vampire for Hire series in which Samantha Moon must risk everything to battle the greatest evil the world has ever known.
J.R. Rain is the author of 110 novels and counting. He lives on an island in the Pacific Northwest, where he's hard at work on his next novel... and fighting off sparkly vampires.
“Vampire Fire”, Vampire for Hire #12, is book one of a trilogy within this long series. As a reminder, this is not a lesfic series, but with the current focus on Samantha’s two teen-aged children, there’s no drooling over man-parts either.
“Vampire Fire” is better than the previous book, “Moon Shadow” - probably because of a renewed sense of story with the beginning of a specific trilogy, rather than being a rambling continuation of a never-ending series.
The nature of the “dark masters”, and angels, and god and the devil continue to evolve…and Samantha’s son Anthony gets a much larger role. With many book series, we watch as the characters grow older, and sometimes wiser. With this series, we’re moving backwards in many ways. Originally, we met Samantha Moon as she struggled with being a vampire, a wife and a mother. We were with her as she explored lust and love with several men. With “Vampire Fire”, the series feels more and more like a YA adventure.
Samantha is becoming less of a sympathetic character, and more annoying. With her son in imminent danger, she ignores her repeated cell phone buzzing. Really, Samantha? Really, Mr. Rain the author? Samantha flips so quickly between loving Kingsley and hating him, I’m beginning to wonder whether he might be happier with a pretty werewolf woman.
After 40 uses of “freaky”, “weird” and “cute” in the previous book, we’re up to 47 instances here, so be sure to have an extra bottle on hand if you’re reading this book with a group as a drinking game.
I was confused by witchy friend Allison’s closeness with Samantha until it was pointed out that I’d missed yet another important development by not reading yet another short story. Arrgh. Stop punishing readers who read your novels in order, Mr. Rain!
As the series progresses, it seems that the author is moving along two paths simultaneously: one, repeat the cool things that began the series; two, ramp up the paranormal mystique and philosophical issues to a level that has multi-universe and multi-dimensional aspects and consequences. The first books in the series are like the first “Matrix” movie - very cool ideas and great characters. The latest books are like the last “Matrix” movie - flashy special effects with less heart.
3.45* for “Vampire Fire”; even with the continued excellent narration, the book is underwhelming enough to be rounded to 3* - meh.
At the start of the book Samantha meets the devil and is asked to carry out a job, this leads to extensive theological discussions that get very tedious. However, I quite enjoyed most of this story as it had more structure then recent books, although I don’t really like the way the plot seems to going.
Sam deals with the devil in this story, and he doesn't fail to creep you out. Anthony takes on a bigger role in the story too. Overall the story was fantastic, and I can't wait for more.
Sam meets the devil, for a job opportunity... creep factor 10/10. In the past, Rain's characters have stated that there is no devil and no hell. Well, you'll find out that isn't exactly true. A clever reader will also put together why certain characters would mislead others, they care about, into not believing in the devil or hell. Read it! Such a clever philosophy.
Finally! We have some Anthony Moon action. The boy is practically a superhero and deserves some time on center stage. It will be fun to see where things go. His character has so much story potential and is more than capable of being the protagonist in his own series. I think this is the first time Rain goes to another person's POV in the Samantha Moon series. I had no problem following the alternating POV's--- which can be tremendously confusing if not handled properly.
Samantha Moon is the vampire I'd want to be. She strong, brilliant, sarcastic, a little nuts, loving and loved. This installment of the A Vampire For Hire series brought Samantha's supernatural exposure to both the darkest and brightest ends of the sci-fi spectrum. She is hired by the devil, dances with the sun, and brings along her wolfish boyfriend, psychic friend and otherworldly children for the ride. I loved it.
I loved it! I always whip through these books quickly because they're too exciting to put down. This one froze on my device during a software update right at an exciting part and left me hanging for a week. Worth the wait as always! Great author!
Love this vampire super mom more and more with each installation of her series! She is awesome! Kicking ass for her super family like a good mom should!
I have to say that I enjoy reading this series. Obviously, otherwise I would not really have read 12 books in the series. None of the books in the series have really been great but none of them have really been bad either. It is really a pretty average book series and the books are fairly short at that. This one being 246 pages according to my Calibre plugin.
I do like the main protagonist as well as most of the characters surrounding her. The writing is pretty good and so is the universe building. What I think I like the most though, and which is probably the main reason why I like the series, is that it keeps everything somewhat down to earth. You might even say that the stories and the settings are mundane compared to some series, like The Temple Chronicles where the author is creating one over the top scenario after another dragging in every supernatural entity imaginable including Gods from all corners, religions and myths of the world. It can be fun but after a while it becomes too much and I really feel I need a pause from all the extravaganza.
The books in this series gives me just that. The main protagonist is a soccer mom turned vampire for starters. The scenarios are really more detective/mystery stories than the, sometimes ridiculous, explosions of magic and fantasy seen in other books. It’s kind of a female, urban fantasy Mike Hammer setting. The story moves at a steady but no too fast pace and there are not too many ludicrous twists. The character development of the main protagonist is also done at a reasonable pace and she is, twelve books later, still far from the überpowered characters we often see.
This books is pretty much the same as the rest of the books. Samantha, our vampire for hire, gets a new client, a new task and a new mystery to solve. This time the client is a bit more than what he first seems to be though. Much more actually and the phrase “evil incarnate” in the book blurb might actually be quite well chosen.
What I was not to thrilled about in this book is that the author drags in Danny again. He has been the only really unpleasant character in the series and I thought that we had gotten rid of that asswipe but it looks like not even his well deserved death was enough. I really do not like the episodes where this asswipe is included.
Apart from that it was a fair and relaxing read. The books in the series really are quite average but I do enjoy reading them as a change of pace.
Finally! Finally Sam wakes up from her coma to give a damn about her son! For the first time, it feels like she cares more about her kids than she does about her freakish nails or whatever she's eating. Tammy still sucks though. :/
And we get a new pov, which would be interesting... but Anthony doesn't sound like a thirteen year old boy. When we are in his head, he sounds like he's between four and eleven. Considering Rain has been building up Sam's kids like they're the next Skywalkers, Anthony is more like baby Bam Bam from the Flinstones, strong but dim.
The best part of this novel was the first chapter when Sam meets the Devil. While Rain borrows traits I've seen from other sources, this Devil is a lot of fun to read, a nice combination of menacing, playful, and self aware.
So far this is one of the better books from the series.
I read this entire 15-book (so far) series back-to-back for the last couple weeks, plus quite a few short stories that relate. Free on Kindle Unlimited. It's a great series for a fan of paranormal mystery. The set up is that a mom in California was changed into a vampire in an attack. Fast forward several years and she's struggling with a failing marriage and raising 2 kids with her day time disability. As the years progress, her marriage fails, her kids mature, and her relationships with love interests/ friends/family grow. The characters are relate-able, there's a little humor, and very entertaining mysteries with interesting treatments of magic. Solidly fun reading!
This series has kept me eagerly reading on to the next thread of the story of Samantha Moon, vampire but this one chapter was the best yet! I know there are soon is by other authors that I haven't read yet that "enhance" Samantha's character but I'm hoping someone "fleshes out" her son Anthony's character. His new side debuted in a blaze of glory ! Hopefully that will be with J.R Rains at the reins.
Great read, ready for the next book. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read a book from start to finish without putting it down.
I have read all the books in this series. Great read, ready for the next book. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read a book from start to finish without putting it down.
Omg this one gave me tears at times and made me laugh other times! It was scary and freaky, I was freaked about Anthony being kidnapped and omg the Devils in this one and scary as hell! And he's after Danny??! Wow and where he's hiding freaked me out, ugh. I cannot stop reading these stories you will love Samantha story. I love her and her family
Story concludes, but ends in a cliffhanger. Main story ends, but multiple questions left unanswered. Still, an enjoyable read in the Samantha Moon saga. At least, at the time of this writing, books 2 and 3 of the trilogy are currently available!
I really enjoyed these books in the beginning, but I am losing interest. One of the things that really annoys me is that nearly everyone that talks to Dam days her name in every sentence. "Hello, Sam. How are you today, Sam? I haven't seen you in ages, Sam. Do let's catch up, Sam." No one talks this way!
I'm enjoying listening to the series but since I hate reading. I get to bored and fall asleep fast. I much rather put my headphones on and get things done. When are the rest of your books going to be on audible? I have this series already but the time travel trilogy is missing the 2nd two book and adventures through Europe.
This story is more about Samantha’s kids. Anthony is kidnapped for is powerful blood. Her daughter and friend use their psychic gifts to track. Anthony’s inner fire helps him save himself. The kidnappers fate is interesting to read about. The devil makes several appearances. Now Anthony’s dad is going to be a problem
Excellent story. This is such a good supernatural series. I love the mom/heroine! This was an intense ride for sure. Can’t wait to read the next book. I also purchased the Audible for these stories and it really enhances the experience of this book. Highly recommend you do that too. Worth the money.
I love J.R Rain books. Such an exciting and creative imagination. This particular book in the Samantha Moon series was the best one yet. I could barely put it down. I cannot to continue the saga!
Samantha meets the devil and learns more about her dead ex husband. . She also has new experiences with Anthony, and who knew Leichenstein's monsters would come in handy.
I love how the story is progressing! The world is opening up, wider every novel. It's interesting how the author has built each supernatural being, most of it is unique and refreshing. Not to mention her views of God and the Devil, she could build a whole new religion here!
What can I say?... I have read, re-read, an re-read again this entire series !!! Definitely going to start using the Dates read tool on Goodreads 😊. Huge fan of this series...well worth every penny spent, which was beyond reasonable for good stories!
This one was the best so far. Almost near the end and this storyline was interesting. Her kids have awesome powers and they are strong. Way to go Sam. Each case she slove she learns New things about herself and those around her. Thanks
Now that her son is in the story and we see a glimpse of what he might be I hope that she sends him to the light warriors. Teens turn all sorts of wrong until they are like 20. They begin to resemble ur kid again.
I wasn't sure if I liked this book in the beginning, but as it moved along it picked up and I came back to it and enjoyed the rest of the book. I look forward. to finding out what happens next with Sam and her family and friends.
Another awesome addition to the series. I finished this book in one listen while at work and I found mself laughing out loud a few times..Anthony takes the driver seat more in this book and I like how the secondary characters are staring to advance more!
The philosophical beginning with the devil was a little too much and brought the rating down 1/2 a star. But the rest of the story revealing her son and the action was great. There were very few slow spots in this book,
These books are awesome! I'm reading two a day and haven't stopped since I read the first one. The series is rapidly expanding and becoming more. I definitely recommend them!
Now this book is going to be the start of us knowing how special Anthony will be with something inside him. It'll be a weird situation with Samantha especially if that someone inside Anthony is planning for something darker.
I guess the more I read of this series, the more comical it is to me. The leaps that the author makes are totally believable if you believe in vampires, werewolves and flying beasts. Good thing I do but it’s still funny and not creepy which keeps me turning the pages.
