Widowed Cynthia Jacobs will do anything to support her three young sons, left impoverished by their father’s sudden demise. Anything, that is, but marry one-time suitor Daniel Lewiston. Cynthia’s family and Daniel’s conspired to match them up years ago, but Cynthia struggled to see the shy boy next door as the dashing husband of her dreams.
Wealthy Daniel Lewiston always admired the beautiful Cynthia, even knowing she’d never settle for him. But when her sons beg him to court her so he can be their father, his heart melts and Cynthia reconsiders. Perhaps what starts as a marriage of convenience for the boys can turn into something more, something that is far sweeter than candy.
Fourth book in The Marvelous Munroes series after The Marquis’ Kiss (February 2017), this sweet Regency-set novella was originally published by Kensington in the anthology A Match for Mother. The Marvelous Munroes: what’s more marvelous than falling in love?
Regina Scott started writing novels in the third grade. Thankfully for literature as we know it, she didn’t actually sell her first novel until she had learned a bit more about writing. Since her first Regency romance was published in 1998, her stories have traveled the globe, with translations in many languages including Dutch, German, Italian, and Portuguese. She is now the author of more than 50 works of warm, witty historical romance.
She and her husband of 30 years reside in Washington State on the way to Mt. Rainier. Regina Scott has driven four in hand, learned to fence, sailed on a tall ship, and dressed as a Regency dandy, all in the name of research, of course. One of those novellas that would have been more satisfying as a full length novel.
The hero was amazing but the novella ended with a reminder of how much the heroine lacked in comparison. The partnership felt emotionally one-sided, overall pretty bittersweet.
Three young boys playing matchmaker for their mother made for an entertaining sweet Regency read. Though Daniel and Cynthia had known each other since childhood, it took the encouragement of Cynthia’s children to bring about a courtship from Daniel, whom they wished to be their new father. Although this plot line could have been explored in a full-length novel, it was endearing to see how the couple’s relationship changed over time. I look forward to reading more from this series!
I received a complimentary copy from the author and was not required to write a positive review. The opinions expressed here are my own.
A delightful clean romance. Where two childhood characters are brought together with the help of three impish boys. It was fun to see their growth together and individually.
Oh my, I read this in one day I just couldn’t put it down. I became part of the story I was in the maze. I was feeling how they felt playing with the kids transformed to that time. This is a true storyteller Regina Scott. She’s done it again.
I typically do not read regency romances but this novella was a sweet read and opened up my taste to more books like it. If you are hesitant with this genre I would recommend this quick, easy read.
Short and sweet romance. I would've liked more romance on one hand, on the other hand the relationship with Daniel and widow Cynthia's boys was enjoyable and humorous.
Sweeter Than Candy by Regina Scott Marvelous Munroes Novella Daniel Lewiston was lonely. While visiting his neighbor and friend, Jonathan, he enjoyed entertaining the three nephews his friend recently found out about. His sister's husband had passed away and left them in a bad way, so they had to move in.
Cynthia Jacobs kept hoping that her husband had left something in his belongings for them, something to help them financially. But there was nothing. Her boys seemed to smile and enjoy themselves back at her childhood home— only it wasn't the estate that brought them joy and laughter. It was Daniel.
I loved these characters. The boys’ personalities were so visible and I couldn't help but fall in love with Daniel. He was an oversized child full of life and yet...an incredible adult as well. It's not a long story, but it's packed full. http://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com/...
