Just as these holidays (and recollection for a few) have a good side, they also have His bad side; Nevertheless, they are surrounded by curiosities, novelties, madness, hysteria and significant facts.
I really enjoyed this book and would have given it 5 stars had it have been 20% shorter. I felt that some parts were just descriptive nothingness. But I loved the ‘story’ and the writing and the history of it all. Wonderful book, just needed some editing. 3.5 stars would be more fair.
This was a different angle of WWII from the position of an Italian who was right in the middle of the action. Supposedly based on a true story about the life of an Italian who became part of the resistance, this man smuggled hundreds of Jews to safety through the mountains to Switzerland. When things became too risky to continue, he returned to Milan. I found myself engrossed in the story and would have loved more--more detail about the man, more about where he went after the war...left me wanting more.
I only gave this book 4 Stars because it was very slow moving at the start. Too much time was spent detailing events while helping Jews escape through the mountains in northern Italy. I was 40% of the way through the novel before it really had my interest. Then it was indeed hard to put down. I never realized how much the Italian people went through during WW2 and the vast number of Jews they helped escape.
A dramatic account, based on fact, of a young Italian up against the Nazis, the Italian fascists, and the Partisans during World War II. Easy to imagine this as a nail biter of a movie - with daring alpine rescues of refugees and brushes with death under the nose of the Gestapo. Strong doses of horror offset by passion.
Although the story was slow moving to start, I found it to be eye opening to the atrocities suffered by the people of Italy under German occupation. Mark Sullivan certainly did his research and told the reader of the incredible bravery and courage of Pino. We are going to Italy and Milan is one of our stays. Going to visit some of the historic places mentioned in the book.
I found this an extraordinary book, giving the perspective of the Italians during World War II. As a writer myself, I found it a page turner even though it is non-fiction and based on a true story with a plethora of bibliographic references. Lots of research went into this amazing tale.
One my list of most moving stories. My mother was born and raised in Italy in 1943 so this book really opened my eyes to the reality of the world she was born into.
It was an amazing story, but I felt the writing was so flat and stilted. It almost felt like reading something on Wikipedia. I never felt emotionally connected to Pino.
