Anh Do is a comedian, artist and also one of the highest selling Australian authors of all time, with total book sales approaching 3 million.

Anh’s first book, The Happiest Refugee, is his enormously popular memoir recounting his perilous childhood journey in a tiny boat from war-torn Vietnam to Australia. The book became an instant hit and has won numerous awards including Australian Book of the Year.

Anh has since turned his attention to children’s book writing.

Weird Do is an illustrated series starring Weir (1st name), Do (2nd name), a kid with a very unfortunate name. Aimed at the 8+ market, these books have gone off the charts as national best-sellers, resulting in 14 books total and more on the way. The first Weir Do won the Australian Book Industry Award for Older Children (2014).

Other children's book series include Hotdog, the adventures of a sausage dog and also Ninja Kid, the escapades of a 10 year old Nerd who discovers he’s the world’s last ninja.

In 2019, Anh released Wolf Girl, a series about a little girl who gets lost in forest and befriends a group of dogs and an enormous Wolf who become her family. Then came Rise of the Mythix, which marks the first of a number of sagas described by Anh as ‘A superhero movie in a book’.

All of Anh Do’s books are mega bestsellers and all rate between 4-5 star averages on websites such as Goodreads and Amazon.

It’s clear that Anh is an exciting voice in literature, able to delight across age ranges and different genres with great success, and he isn’t planning to slow down any time soon.

Never a dull moment listening to Stig Wemyss narrating Anh Do’s WeirDo 8: Really Weird children’s book. He is incredibly funny and has a whole range of different voices that are silly but oh, so fun and the crazy sound affects are amazing and the music is awesome. And of course, I have to mention Anh Do as he is the author of this book he too is funny, and an exceptional children’s author. In this book grandma comes to visit and gives everyone a good laugh. Onya, grandma Do!

Summary: The plot of Really Weird! revolves around Grandma Do's visit to the school dance which was possible due to the events of book #7 which involved Weir's family selling the T-Rex bone to the museum.

The story starts with the lead up to the school dance. Weir wants to dance with Bella during the dance however, the note unfortunately ends up in the hands of Wendy who thinks the note is for her so hence, Weir has to dance with Wendy for the dance. On the other hand, Bella agrees to dance with Hans Some due to Weir already dancing with Wendy.

The story then proceeds to Grandma Do's visit. She first gives gifts to Weir's family. She gives very peculiar items such as a doorbell to Weir's dad and a glow-in-the-dark overall to Weir. On the next day, Weir and Grandma Do go to Grandparents days where there are many grandparents such as Hans Some's grandfather and Henry's grandfather. Grandma Do brings Vietnamese food such as crab rolls to Grandparents Day and this is a big hit with the attendees and the food is quickly eaten up.

After this, the story then goes on to the events of the farm trip. The farmer at the farm first teaches the attendees how to milk the cow and lets them try it themselves. The other attendees only manage to fill one bucket however, Weir and Grandma Do are able to fill three buckets. Then the farmer teaches the attendees how to collect chicken eggs and once again Weir and Grandma Do collect the most eggs. However, the farmer then realises that the pigs have gone missing and hence asks the attendees to help him find them. Thankfully Grandma Do is able to find the pigs due to her smart thinking that the pigs would be playing in mud.

Finally, the last event of the story is the school dance which Weir invites Grandma Do to. At first Weir dances with Wendy, however, later in the dance she decides to dance with Henry and hence, Weir asks Bella to dance with him but suddenly, the lights go out... Thankfully the glow-in-the-dark overalls of Weir and Grandma Do provide enough light for the dance to go on.

Pros: Again, just like with the other books in the series, the book flows very well and is very easy to understand. I really liked the family aspect of the plot, especially during the farm visit story arc where Weir and Grandma worked together.

Cons: The plot of this story felt quite dry and I believed that there was too many subplots for such a short length. I think it would have been better to just have the book focus on Grandma Do's visit and her family bonding time with the family and then end on the visit to the farm. I believe this would have been better because it would have allowed the other family characters to be further developed such as the Mum and Dad (character development is a constant issue with these books). Also I did feel, this book was not as funny as the previous books.

Recommendation: Just like with the previous books, I recommend this book for young children (5-13) as it is easy to follow and does not use over complicated vocabulary

Conclusion: Overall, Really Weird! is a decent book. It contains quite a nice plot however, its emphasis on family could have been improved by decreasing the amount of subplots.

In this one, the Do family pick up Grandma from the airport, take her to grandparents day, to a farm and a school dance when Weir wanted to dance with Bella but accidentally found himself asking Wendy. The usual kind of stuff expected in the series.

Weir's Grandma Do is visiting from Vietnam and Weir class is having a barn dance. Grandma is sassy, fun, loves scaring her family in her gorilla costume, and knowledgeable about farms, Weir said that because she had a farm in Vietnam.

Another great book in the series - this one gives us lessons about thinking about the feelings of others, and how our differences makes our world great.
