I’ve read about a dozen of NSS’s books at this point, but this is the first completed series of his that I’ve finished. I must say, that at 7 books, this series hits my limit for how many books in a series I’m willing to commit to. And that magic # for me is actually 7. Fortunately, NSS knows just how to finish up a series without making me feel let down. Not everything is perfectly tied up, not everyone lives, and not everyone gets an HEA. The threat of the variants are still there, but the human villain of the story has finally been dealt with. As scary as the variants were, that man was a series piece of work and really gave the variants a run for their money on who the most threatening predator was.

I experienced every myriad of emotion in this book. From such a great amount of anger I would have to put the book aside, to coming undone and crying, to smiling like a goof. The characters are well drawn, and very real, and NSS really knows how to allow the natural growth of character development throughout the series. Pedro and Ringo will stay with me mind and heart for a long time to come. For such a hard-core, action filled, post-apocalyptic thriller, NSS also gave us many heart-string pulling moments, and very human and sensitive moments. I simply cannot recommend this series enough. By far one of the best stories I’ve read in a long time, and one I know I will gladly come back to in the future for a re-read.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Many thanks to Netgalley for providing a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

"All it takes is all you got, Marines."

This seventh book in the EXTINCTION CYCLE series was non-stop action from page one to the very end. And this book is quite a doorstopper of a tale at 450+ pages.

The Hemorrhage Virus has spread worldwide, leaving monstrous Variants in its path. The remaining humans have divided into two camps - those loyal to the U.S. President and those those following a sadistic psychopath.

Fitz and Team Ghost are in Europe trying to put an end to the Variants there and Dr. Kate Lovato is stressed to the max, trying to protect her unborn child and worrying about whether the child will grow up without a father.

It is my understanding that this is author Nick Smith's last book in this series and I felt totally satisfied with the whole story and the ending. I know there are other authors out there that have written about the EXTINCTION CYCLE world so maybe we will see some more stories from them.

Great series, talented author, and I am excited to see what new adventures he will take us on in the future.

I received this book from Orbit Books in exchange for my unbiased review but as with all of this author's books, I have pre-ordered the book from Amazon for my library and to support this talented writer.

In case the threat of the monstrous Variants and the pending extinction of the human race wasn't enough, Nicholas Sansbury Smith adds in some extra tension with the possibility of another civil war. Rogue, fanatical soldier Andrew Wood and his Resistance of Tyranny (ROT, an acronym that feels a bit too on-the-nose for this vicious homegrown squadron of terrorists) are attempting to undermine President Ringgold by unleashing the infectious Hemorrhage Virus bioweapon upon the nation's Safe Zone Territories, while executing some grand-scale revenge against the members of Ghost Team. The bulk of Ghost Team's Delta operators, however, are waging war against the Variants in France and seeking to save Europe.

Smith weaves a strong sci-fi-military-horror narrative using multiple plot threads and presenting shifting viewpoints from a handful of characters. Opening with a battle for survival, Wounded Warrior Reed Beckham fights his way through a Safe Zone now overrun with horrors, catapulting the story from one violent and dangerous encounter to the next. Extinction War hits the ground running, hardly pausing to allow readers or the book's characters a chance to catch their breath. This is a guns-ablazing, pedal to the metal post-apocalyptic actioneer that speeds its way through the end of the world.

While there's plenty of alpha male mayhem, it's Smith's presentation of the women that I enjoy the most. They're not only smart and capable characters in position of power, but function as a necessary counterbalance to the horrors of this world, oftentimes inhabiting the roles of humanity's saviors. Both Dr. Kate Lovato and President Ringgold are tough go-getters, but they're also determined to fix the egregious and deliberate actions made by men. Men created the Hemorrhage Virus and destroyed humanity, but it's ultimately up to the women to save the world while a lot of the men run assist. Cool beans.

Extinction War looks to be the big finish to The Extinction Cycle series, and Smith ties up the dangling plot threads pretty nicely. Not all of the characters we've grown to love and admire over the course of seven novels make it through unscathed, but the story resolves itself in a satisfactory way. Smith, of course, has kept his bases covered should his publisher and fans demand a book eight. Never count out Team Ghost, after all. But if this is indeed the series finale, it goes out on a good note. I really wouldn't mind this being the last book though, and am savoring the idea of the survivors finally having a chance to unwind and relax for a bit. They've more than earned a rest.

I don't know what to say about this book to do this justice!!! It was phenomenal. Everything I wanted and more.

It's all out war, both with the Variants and ROT! The battle for Europe is still going strong and Fitz and Apollo are knee deep in it. The Variants there are bigger, badder and harder to destroy than what they had in America, and it's all Fitz can do to keep Team Ghost alive. Meanwhile, in America, Beckham is battered and bruised but still fighting, well just about!! Horn is trying to keep Kate safe, President Ringgold is trying to hold onto her country, safe zones are allying with ROT and things look grim, especially with the Hemorrhage Virus being used against them, but nobody will go out without a fight!!!

This book just about broke me!! I was on the edge of my seat throughout and had such a hard time putting it down, but I also didn't want to keep reading because that meant that the series would end!! I wanted to devour it, but I didn't, I took my time reading it and just immersed myself in the War. I felt everything these characters felt, I cried with them and I laughed with them. I gasped, I was tense and I was terrified for them, I was completely captivated by these characters and their journeys. I'm sad to see it end, but also happy with the way it ended!! Not all the characters made it, and those that did were changed completely, but that's what makes it so good, so real!! That's what gives this series it's heart... the amazingly written characters!

The plot of this was extremely fast paced and intense!! Right from the start, we are thrown into the action of fighting the enemy, both in Europe and America. And boy does it get tense!! So many times had me gasping and going, no, no, no, NOOOO!! Then there were times where I was biting my nails and waiting to see what would happen next, and what happened next would break my heart, but other times would leave me smiling and going, yes!!!! It was an emotional rollercoaster, but so, so worth it! I want to talk about Piero, but I can't, I want to talk about Davis, but I can't, I wan't to talk about Beckham, but I can't!! There is so much I want to say, but I can't because it will spoil things.

In all, this book was phenomenal. As I said already, it was all I wanted and more! It even surpassed what I was expecting!! It was action packed, intense, an edge of your seat ride, emotional, and absolutely brilliant!! My heart has been captured by these characters and I do hope we see more from them, but if the author feels that their story has come to an end, then I'm ok with that!! Horn, Beckham and Fitz have come a long way and deserve a break ;)

Seriously guys, there are very, very few books that I recommend as passionately as I do this series. Go give them a go, you won't be sorry!!!

I received an advanced copy of this, but have also pre-ordered the audio and paperback!! It will remain firmly on my favourite shelves.

The end of the war is at hand. A civil war is at hand in th U.S. And Team ghost , the Marines and the rest of the European forces are trying to find victory in Europe. Beckman is down but not out and Fits is trying to live up to his role as the new leader of Team Gohst fighting in Europe. Reading this last chapter in A Great Series, I found my self going back to the first book and reliving Team Ghosts story again, their up and downs , losses , heart aches and the little boys they found almost the way. That this is the last is a hard and dad thing to accept but that Nicholas Smith gave us all a series to love was a gift. Now if you want to know if we win or lose in the end, week take the time to read and find out for yourself. I don't want to spoil it for you. And Nick, you can write more later on this if you want.

War has gone global!

Of all the books in the Extinction Cycle series, this story was hands-down the most stressful for me to read in terms of its unrelenting suspense. Fierce battles are being waged. Humans are on the ragged edge in this fight for survival against the evolving Variants AND a power hungry human psychopath.

From prologue to epilogue, Extinction War is a brilliantly crafted, 5 star page-turner. It is also not a book you want to start near the end of your day. Highly recommended!

Loved this book!! My favorite Extinction Cycle read yet. Non-stop action and a fantastic story line. This is one you don't want to put gown it's so good. Technically accurate and the flow is awesome. I highly recommend this series for those that enjoy military action, post apocalypse, and zombie-esque apocalypse action series. Very well written, I can't say this enough times.

WHAT A WAY TO END A SERIES. THIS IS NICHOLAS SANSBURY SMITH AT HIS BEST.

WOW. Hats off to Nicholas Sansbury Smith, what a way to end a series. This had been by far my most favorite series in all of kindle by one of the best Authors around. With Gunnery Sergeant Fitzpatrick and Team Ghost fighting for their lives in Europe and trying to make it safe over there, they have no idea what is happening with their friends and loved ones back in the United States. Beckham is doing his best to get back to Kate and their unborn child, but even he's not sure he'll make it this time around as he's dropped into a place even worse then hell. With big Horn also doing all he can to protect his girls, Kate and the President of the United States from one madman, Andrew Wood, who seems hell bent on wiping out Fitz, Team Ghost, Beckham, Kate, President Ringgold and everyone else who opposes him around the world he makes one last attempt to end his enemies once and for all. But the one thing he doesn't count on is the love these people have for each other and their Country. Nick as done one awesome job with this series and I for one am devastated that this series has come to an end. I've followed this series from book #1 "Extinction Horizon" and I've counted each day until the release of the next book and this was well worth waiting for. This is one series I recommend to all and will continue to do do so for a long, long time. Now to wait and see where Nicholas takes us after this.

I need to start this review with some honesty. This is the first Extinction Cycle book that I've read... You see, I've happily enjoyed the performance of Bronson Pinchot throughout the first 6 installments--- so this was a new experience for me. (I found myself trying to do Mr. Pinchot's voices in my head while reading and it made me appreciate him even more). Back to Extinction War-this book is the best piece of art Nicholas Sansbury Smith has produced to date. There are so many examples throughout this story that had me reacting out loud, but it felt like War produced that effect every other page! I've spoke in other reviews about NSS' amazing ability to develop characters but I now see this is where he truly shines. These characters felt like family far before this point, and Smith beautifully (and painfully!) keeps the reader's heart in an constant state of frenzy regarding their fate. When I realized I was nearing the end of the book, I slowed my pace to a crawl, not wanting the story to to end. This proved fruitless-I needed this story more than Flathmann needs his booze. The last several chapters of the story provided tears, fist pumps, and a desire for more. Thank you for this story, Mr Smith. It was a HELL of a ride!

The Extinction series was my first exposure to the work of Nick Smith. It hooked me from the start. With War, a great series comes to a dramatic end. This book has all the action of the earlier installments, and the climactic final scenes make it hard to put down. I particularly liked the Piero Angaran storyline; the humanity in this brave Italian soldier's friendship with a mouse, while the world crashes down around both of them, is an unexpected pleasure in an otherwise intense novel. I highly recommend this whole series, as well as the Trackers and Hell Divers series also from Nick. Post-apocalyptic fiction is in very good hands.

I literally read this in one day. I just couldn't stop once I started. This book is a perfect addition to the ECycle. As much as I'd like there to be more to the story, this feels like a perfect way to end it. I don't want to give anything away, but I found myself cheering, and crying, angry and happy, frustrated and joyful while reading War. I love this series, and I can't wait to see what NSS writes next.

Wow!!! What a ride this series has been. From reading the very first book I knew I was on to a different style of an apocalyptic series. Definitely not your usual run of the mill monsters and this was completely refreshing to me. So I was hooked and quickly devoured the first 3 books in the series. Then I’ve had to wait not so patiently for the rest to be released but with each book the wait was worth it. Waiting for book 7 was no exception and to be completely honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect with War. It didn’t let me down. Straight back into the fight and I knew I was in for an amazing read. Fast paced, tense, exciting, edge of your seat reading for all of the book. No spoilers here but anyone who’s read these books knows that nobody is safe and the worst can happen. All of my favourite characters faced their worst nightmares and by the end of the book I felt like I’d ridden a rollercoaster of emotions. An excellent way to end the series but hopefully we might get some more stand alone stories set in this world. I highly recommend this book, series and anything else the amazing author has written.

Nicholas Sansbury Smith does not disappoint n the book...the “end” of the series. The action continues with Team Ghost. Fitz leading the team into the jaws of war with a multitude of beasts. Dr. Kate is continuing to do research and Beckham is supposedly retired, but of course that won’t last. The action in Europe is vicious and in the U.S. traitors are attempting to overthrow what little stability there is. This book will take you on another action packed ride. Enjoy it.

War is a fantastic culmination of the preceding books in the series. I do not even remember why I began reading the Extinction Cycle books, but with the first book all the way to War #7, the action, the attention to details combined with the genius of the imagination are absolutely astounding. Where most books about the post apocaliptic world do not directly define how it all started, Extinction Horizon (the first book in the cycle) pinpoints the cause, and continues to expand on possible mutations that continue. The Variants created is just the beginning. For me "War" is not the ending of the series but it could be. Thank you Nicholas Smith for beginning this series and creating such a collection along the way that has created a book #7 that we have all been waiting for. You are an amazing author and I want the thank you for sharing your knowledge and incredible imagination with us, your readers.

Fantastic ending to the series. I have loved this series from the start and this last book caps it off perfectly. Although I could read more of them a break from the adrenaline rush will do me good.
You won't be disappointed with any part of this book even though it's the last one. There is some sadness when reading some of the deaths and joy with others. An absolute must read.

I enjoyed this book very much. Action packed, fast paced. The characters, some old, some new, vary between the good and the bad. The transition between the monsters as they continue to develop is both horrifying, and fascinating. I was given an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

A heart pacing, exceptionally harrowing, addition to the Extinction series. Nick Smith keeps the reader on pins and needles as they follow Fitz, Apollo and Team Ghost struggling to save Europe as they fight a loosing battle against all kinds of freaky mutating creatures. While back home, the President, Horn, and Capt. Beckham are in their own perilous mission fighting Wood and his men as they trick, deceive and sabotage to take over the US. Kate is in her own battle trying to perfect a cure for the hemorrhage virus before it is desperately needed. A story so intense I stopped reading, took deep breathes and then picked it right back up. Very well done Nick Smith!

NO!!!! This can't be the end! Is it just me or are there other out there like me who need more???

Yes, I get that it ended in a good place and I see how it all came together but I just can't get over wondering what happens now. I NEED more.

P.S. I would so marry Fitz! Good thing he's fictional because I would so be stalking I him otherwise.
(Yes, this is a very girly comment for very manly books but ask me if I care: I don't)

🏆🎧 ABR Reviewer's Choice Award Winner

My original Extinction War audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.

The excitement continues as Capt’s Beckham and Rachel Davis try to derail R.O.T. and self-appointed president Andrew Wood.  President Ringgold is fighting a civil war while Lovato tries to find the cure to the virus.  When everything comes together … people will die, variants will rise in their places and the civil war gets messier and far deadlier.

In Europe, Team Ghost is encountering different lethal variants and coming to terms with its new leader, Master Sergeant Fitzpatrick.  Unlike anything Fitzpatrick has seen before, his confidence nearly shattered he rallies his team and together they face the insect variants head on.

Nicholas Sansbury Smith has a knack for creating storylines that are realistic and frightening; he also has a knack for twisting raw emotion from his listeners.  This book is tying up loose ends but it’s so much more – it is a rollercoaster ride that leaves the listener reeling with shock … loss … sadness … and a few moments of Oh Hell Yeah!  There is no waffling, Smith goes for the jugular and wrings all emotions out of his listeners mercilessly.  Every single second is action-packed; it’s like Smith put everything he had into this book.  There was not a dull or slow moment to be found.

Characters were well-developed and their personalities reflective of who they were by both Smith and Pinchot.  Smith “brought it”, and Bronson Pinchot ratcheted it up with an amazing performance.   To go with the intense drama unfolding, Pinchot rose to the challenge and delivered the most powerful performance I have heard.  Each character has their own voice and personality; for some personality that oozes out of the voice – especially Wood – Pinchot set my teeth on edge each and every time with the lazy draw of Wood.

Don’t miss out!  Anyone who enjoys action, well-developed stories and characters, and zombies – this is a series to hear!

There were no issues with the production or quality of this audiobook.

I give this 4.8 stars but of course round-up for the full five. From the moment I read the first book after having tried another series before I was hooked.

In Europe, Master Sargeant Joe Fitzpatrick and Team Ghost return from a mission deep into enemy territory only to find that the variant army has grown stronger, and they are advancing toward the EUF's stronghold in Paris. In the United States, they are on the brink of civil war as President Ringgold and Dr. Kate Lovato are on the run. The SZTs (Safe Zone Territories) continue to rally behind the ROT flag, leaving Ringgold more enemies than allies. But there are still those fighting for America. Captain Rachel Davis and Captain Reed Beckham will risk everything to defeat ROT and save the country.

One thing I have always loved about Nick is his ability to pull me into the lives of characters and care about them both new and old. They are just written so well and with such insight into the human condition that it just stands to reason. Likewise, the fact that the author is willing to kill off popular characters and not just the side ones.

This is the action-packed conclusion, or is it, to this impactful novel series?

Bronson Pinchot does a great job of making the characters even more real and part of the world.

my absolute favorite!

Nicholas Sansbury Smith is a fantastic author. And a marvelous storyteller. This is my FAVORITE series of his. I didn't think I could pick a favorite book in it, but surprisingly this one is it. We saw the world fall apart, but he writes about hope and surviving and humanity putting it all together again. For the good. Even though the bad tries. I love the science, and learning about the mutation (s). I don't agree with the choices he, as an author, made for some of the characters, but that's what keeps you on the edge of your seat! Or biting your nails. Is this the last of story? Probably. But I have numerous Kindle World works to enjoy in this universe while NSS writes up another phenomenal tale.

Now, I have to re read them. Back to back, to get the full impact of this story.

Exciting, satisfying 5 Star Story from beginning to ending of series!

I loved every book in this series. Often in even good series the story can fizzle out toward end but not in NSS's wild apocalyptic ride. The characters have become like family and I read with my heart pounding at what would happen to each of them. Each hero and heroines were true to themselves. They were brave, frighten and oh, so human. They each brought all they had to offer to the struggle to save themselves, their friends and their world. The women were vital leaders and soldiers but still very much women.

The ending was extremely suspenseful and still very satisfying. It was not rushed and it tied up the multiple storylines for all the characters. Extinction War is an ending well worth the hours of emotional investment in Nicholas Sansbury Smith's world. I loved the ending!

I received an ARC for an honest review but I have preordered the Kindle, Audible and Paperback versions for my Library. NSS's books are so great I read and listen to them all multiple times!

Highest possible recommendation!

I think this one was my favorite of the series. A very good ending to a great series. There were super sad moments and very happy ones, all brought together by the bond of good people trying to save the world. Mr. Wood was a great villain as well, full-blown psychopath!

What I love most about this series is that it is literally the scariest thing I've ever read. For this book, knowing that going in, I only read it during the daytime (usually in my office at work....), and I would still be spooked. How can you not be when the descriptions are so real, lines like:

"clouds the color of variants' eyes" or "shattered pieces of glass lined the windows like the teeth of a Variant" - chills! When you're reading about one of your favorite characters walking alone and you get those descriptions, how do you not get the heebie-jeebies?

Anyway, well done series that I think I'll need to re-read in the very near future.

finally this series is over! it's pulpy, not very realistic, but overall a pretty good barrel ride through hell. reading this book is kinda like taking all of the most horrible moments in the walking dead and making a book about that. i sometimes feel that NSS sits around with his friends pitching ideas of the worst things they could do to these characters and then try and one-up themselves each time. on one hand i did enjoy reading this series. on the other i'm glad it's over, i've had enough of this apocalypse porn for a lifetime
