I am convinced that the Boy Scouts of America are continuing to expand their belief that they can aid in building boys into men. I am assured they are correct. These Merit Badge books are like an introduction to everything. The basics are taught and emphasis is given to demonstrating competence. I am grateful for their expansion into more diverse fields, especially those that will pique the interest of boys young and now even a bit older. This particular book not only teaches the joys of a game, it emphasizes the intellectual stimulation and development that chess can engender and it points the young scout's mind to develop these attributes. Well done. I hope I pass.

This book is supposed to be a guide for Boy Scouts seeking to earn their merit badge in Chess, a fairly recent addition to the merit badge program oddly enough. But to be perfectly honest, anyone who is interested in an easy-to-read book on the subject would be quite surprised at how thorough and varied this publication is. Readers of all ages and walks of life would find much to like in the pages of this small book. Give it a shot; I think you will learn something.

This is a decent introduction to the game of chess. It covers the history, concepts and mechanics and is not meant as a strategy guide.

Wow! Very informative. I wish it had been a merit badge when I was a Boy Scout.
