By all accounts, everyone loves Genny. So why does someone want her dead?
There’s something special about Genesis Baker, owner of The Sister’s popular New Beginnings Café. With her dimpled smile and twinkling blue eyes, Genny has practically the entire town eating from the palm of her hand. But Genny is hiding a secret. Despite her sunny disposition and golden touch, there is heartache in her past, and heartache, they say, comes in threes.
Heartache Number One: An unwelcomed customer shows up at New Beginnings. Apparently, the restraining order against him has lapsed.
Heartache Number Two: Genny’s arch nemesis from high school returns to town. Twenty years has done nothing to mellow the bitter feud between these two women.
Heartache Number Three: As Genny finally acknowledges her feelings for a younger man—sexy firefighter Cutter Montgomery—memories of her first love come back to haunt her.
On top of it all, someone is stalking Genny, determined to make her life miserable. As it turns out, being kidnapped is only the beginning of her troubles…
Book Five of the award winning The Sisters, Texas Mystery Series.
Best-selling indie and hybrid author Becki Willis loves crafting stories with believable characters in believable situations. Many of her stories stem from her own personal experiences. (No worries; she's never actually murdered anyone).
When she’s not plotting danger and adventure for her imaginary friends, Becki enjoys reading, spending time with her family, unraveling a good mystery (real or imagined), dark chocolate, and a good cup of coffee.
A professed history geek, Becki often weaves pieces of the past into her novels. Family is a central theme in her stories and in her life. She and her husband enjoy traveling but believe coming home to their Texas ranch is the best part of any trip.
Becki has won numerous awards—including two Killer Nashville Silver Falchion Awards, InD’Tale’s coveted RONE, and been named Finalist for two Claymore Awards—but feels the real compliments come from her readers. Drop in for an e-visit anytime at beckiwillis.ccp@gmail.com, or www.beckiwillis.com.
Ok, I am now a definite fan of Becki Willis's The sisters. A very entertaining read. She has made them come alive and I will miss them , at least until the one comes out later this year. you go girl, keep writing, please. I have been a long time reader, I am 69 and have always been a reader and a dreamer. I is difficult to find a truly different plot. You deliver.
Genny’s Ballad: The Sisters, Texas Mystery Series Book 5 is by Becki Willis. This delightful book continues a mystery set in The Sisters, Texas. It is fun to read and makes an easy and quick read. It would be great for summer reading. Genesis Baker had left town for college and had never come back. She had gone on to Paris to work for a great chef, set up a catering business, and had come home to The Sisters and opened a restaurant here. She could still feel the whispers about her and Tommy Evans even though that was long ago. They had married and had the marriage annulled in the same night. Tommy then married Kayla Sorensen who was claiming she was pregnant with Tommy’s baby. By the time she was discovered to be a liar, Genny was gone and Tommy committed suicide. Now that Genny was home, the rumors and whispers had begun again. This time it was because Cutter Montgomery, who was eight years younger than she was, was being seen with her a lot. As if this wasn’t enough, strange things began to happen. She would get phone calls with no one there, the fire alarm went off in her restaurant with no evident reason, someone wrote nasty things on her trash cans, and someone was setting fires around her house. Genny has no idea what is going on and why. She and Cutter need to find out who is going these things before things get out of hand. Can they do this?
Creepy ex-boyfriends, layers of mystery, hunky firefighters, supportive female friends, a cozy small-town setting, and apple turnovers – Genny’s Ballad, book five in Becki Willis’s The Sisters Texas Mysteries has all of that and more.
What more? How about a compelling plot that opens with bumps and grunts in the night and said hunky firefighter coming to the rescue. But while that’s a good beginning, a novel needs more than just an opening scene. Fortunately author Willis delivers. This is no ordinary cozy mystery. It’s got layered stories and nuanced characters, and it deals with the reality that the hopes, dreams, and loves we have when we’re young are not necessarily the hopes, dreams, and loves we get to keep, or choose to follow through with as we mature.
While I enjoyed that one of the many subplots involved the main character Genesis “Genny” Baker’s best friend Madison going through the joys and perils of her home (and life) being featured on a reality show about remodeling (and, by extension, Genny herself and many of their other friends) a scene I found particularly delicate and touching was one with an aging teacher who was clearly suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s. Working that into the story in a way that felt organic but still respectful of real people who live with such conditions speaks a lot to the author’s talent for writing believable characters.
I also liked that Genny was flawed. She didn’t like asking for help, and that meant that she put herself in harm’s way. It’s easy to write a protagonist who is perfect. To write a character who is imperfect and still really likeable, someone we want to root for, takes real craft.
And I did root for Genny to resolve her issues, and for Madison to resolve her cases, just as wanted all of the various romances to end successfully, because in a cozy mystery you get to solve the crime and have the perfect kiss, if the author has done her job, and Becki Willis has absolutely done her job. (Similarly, I wanted the less savory characters to get their comeuppance. I’m looking at you in particular Pembroke. You really annoyed me.)
Of course, I have to mention that Genny’s Ballad is book five in an ongoing series, in which book eight has just been released. While it’s completely satisfying as a stand-alone read, it would be even more enjoyable within the context of the series at large.
Cuddling, coziness, and creative crime solving by strong women characters – Genny’s Ballad has it all.
I’m so confused....there’s basically (exactly) the same writing in chapter 1 and chapter 7. When I say the same writing...I mean pages that are WORD. FOR. WORD.
I like this author and this series. I can imagine this happening because there were two similar scenes and she just copied, pasted, and very slightly updated the second and forgot to go back....but why hasn’t it been fixed by now? It’s so weird and jarring. I honestly thought my device malfunctioned, but nope.
*I would give it 5 stars like I have on her other books I’ve read, but for this issue. This author delivers consistent, enjoyable, quick reads. I hope she takes the time to correct one of the passages in this book, but if she doesn’t,I’ll keep reading anyway. :)
Genny's Ballad #5 - This story concentrates on Genny and Cutter. The past and the present mix and it's not an all good combination. Well written, intriguing and substantial, this story keeps the reader immersed in the pages. The pace is fast, the action intense and the characters don't disappoint the reader; a well thought out plot. No cliffhanger, but there's another book hinted. 5*
Chicken Scratch #1 - This is my first book by this author and I was greatly surprised at how well written, well thought out and laced with humor and intrigue; this little gem is packed. The area is near and dear to my heart since I was born in the area. The people, while not as easily identifiable as in a Jeff Abbott novel, are locals I know. The Texas speak is just as if Ms. Willis and I were at the Creamery (TAMU) sharing milk shakes and local gossip. The kinks and knots in the plot made it hard to put down the book, even to get a tea refill. You can't help but like the characters and root for them. The story, filled with life stories, is actually pretty substantial, not fluff, and Ms. W is an entertaining storyteller. 5*
When The Stars Fall #2 - This book is better than Chicken Scratch (#1), which is a good book, too. A lot of suspense, along with developing romances amongst several characters, keeps the reader immersed in this substantial story. Like the first book, the baddie is easily figured out, but the story is well worth reading. There are too many of the well rounded, well developed characters to shout out separately, but they're all interesting, funny, sincere and just plain folk. The Big House becomes a prominent character and helps the family with a huge change to their lives, maybe. Not a cliffhanger, but there's a tease about the future of Big and Madison. 5*
Stipulations and Complications #3 - This is a heavy, suspense filled book full of dark secrets and mysteries with the past and the present colliding and the darkness is felt by all involved. Yet, there's plenty of good and love along with the humor. This intriguing, substantial read is hard to put down with its interesting storylines and well thought out characters. This book is on the level with DeMille, Follette, Grisham and Ludlum. 5*
Home Again: Starting Over #4 - Amen Sister to that comment about Texans and wannabes! This series must be read in order; they keep getting better and better. I love the fact that what happens in the earlier books are just slightly mentioned, instead of being retold. All the characters keep growing and their past and secrets coming to light as the books go on. Multiple storylines in this book and the twists and surprises just keep the reader glued to the pages. I've chain read the first four books and don't have the next two available to me. But I'm diving into book seven, the newly released The Lilac Code. 5*
The Lilac Code #7 - Trouble even finds them outside of Texas! I missed the two books before this one, but it was still an interesting read. I was disappointed with the ending - the gun in her hand was forgotten. But the pages were full of intrigue and suspense, and the characters were intense. Again, there were multiple stories occurring, along with the main story. Current events were featured, which isn't surprising with all that's happened in Texas and other U.S. locations in the past year alone. While not a cliffhanger, there's definitely more books in the future. I chain read five books in three days and never once was bored with this series. 5*
I absolutely adore this series by Becki Willis! That being said, there were a few things I would point out about this one in particular. First, the foreshadowing at the beginning of the book was fine. But I was frustrated to read the exact same chapter again in it's entirety later in the book. Maybe the foreshadowing could have been just a portion of the full scene, a teaser? Secondly, I really missed Maddie and Brash. Don't get me wrong - I love Genny and Cutter! But I needed more of Maddie at the very least. Third, I don't get the title. Maybe I'm being dense and someone can explain it to me. What does Genny's Ballad mean? How does a ballad have anything to do with this story?
I know this all may be coming across as critical and give the impression that I didn't like the book. But that couldn't be further from the truth (well, except for the whole repeated foreshadowing stuff). I gave it a very solid four stars and I read it in two days, after all. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series and I'm seriously having to pace myself since I can devour these great stories faster than Becki can write them. ;)
With three episodes left before the house is turned over to Maddy, this normally witty and funny series, takes a break from the usual with a more serious spotlight on Maddy’s best friend, diner owner Genesis ‘Genny’ Baker. Genny’s awakened from a sound sleep by someone that shouldn’t be around is on her porch.
Wasting no time, Genny calls town heart-throb, cowboy firefighter Cutter Mongomery to come over. Cutter gets rid of the lurker but learns Genny’s had several hang-ups. Worse, Cutter’s not there when Genny‘s smile falters, her next customer is Pembrook Harris, an unwelcome blast from her past. A charming stalker she left 2,000 miles behind her!
Cutter has an uphill battle convincing Genny his pursuit’s sincere and getting her to admit her feelings ford him, Cutter doesn’t give up and moves ahead of Maddy and Brash in the couple’s sweepstakes. The town rumor mill has plenty of grist with Gennecut, double threats against Genny, her nemesis’s return plus the grand reveal! Rating: 4.25stars
Genny is front and center in everything here! Oh boy!
While Genny aka Genesis has been one of my favorite characters in this series, I admit, I have been wanting to know her backstory. The pure depth of her character shines like a beacon in this book and the way that author Becki Willis blends everything together in the world building is beyond powerful. This series has never shied from topics that many authors choose to remain pc on, and instead Willis tends to grab on with both hands and embraces the subject and hangs on for the ride. This is just about as close to real life entertainment that a cozy mystery can reach and I absolutely recommend this series to any and all. The only thing that could make it better would be the recipes for the Gennydoodles and some of the other amazing dishes listed in between the hornets nests and fires that Genny dodges in this book.
This is the second book I have read by this author Becki Willis, and I loved it! I love Willis' writing. I like that she uses a strong, independent woman as her primary character, and combines her with an equally strong likeable male character to create her romance angle. I would describe this book as a romantic suspense book with a strong dose of mystery, yet the emphasis is definitely on edge of your seat suspense. Is Genesis (Genny) Baker being stalked by a killer or are there more than one enemy out to do her harm? The setting is one of the Sisters towns in Texas, and I like that idea too. I definitely want to read more of this series and more of Willis' other books too! Check it out for a great read.
So far I have read all of The Sisters series up to and including Jenny's Ballad. I can't wait to start the next one. Every single book has had non stop action and adventure from start to finish. I love how each book continues with the lives of the same characters. There is never a dull moment. Becky Willis makes you feel like part of the family, friends and even the town, and every book makes you feel that way. What a incredible writer. I am so glad I happened to come across this writer. I'll be starting the next book as soon as I finish this review. You won't be sorry to read this series. So what are you waiting for? Hurry up and get the first book and get hooked like I did. Keep them coming Becki.
This book in the series revolves around Maddy's best friend Genny. It starts with someone outside her house in the middle of the night and ends with...... Genny is such a strong person and we learn more about her back story in this book. Of course Cutter is back as the man who is very interested in her, but will Genny risk her heart? Because the story is about Genny instead of Maddy, the book has a slightly different tempo, but still fun to read. I didn't miss the crazy situations Maddy usually gets herself into because I liked the storyline.
Genny's backstory and her disappointment in love that colored her ability to form romantic relationships with men is explained. But this is not just a romantic tale: it is filled with threats, arson, attempted kidnapping, stalking, and lots of little mysteries, a TV series and unveiling of a house that was rehabbbed in town. Granny, Maddy and all the usual characters show up again. This is such a satisfying set of mysteries with humor, depth, and characters and scenes that seem to be so real you feel like you are a visitor in the town.
Genny's turn to have TROUBLE! For Genny, it comes in threes. We discover the story of her first love and the tragic end, a former stalker boyfriend finds her, her former high school nemesis is back and someone is stalking her with phone hang ups and small fires around her home. Oh, I forgot to mention that the tv show caught moments between her and Cutter and now they are referred to as Gennecut! This story was the best one yet! Lots of humor, angst and heart stopping thriller.
I would recommend this book to ALL my friends! Whew! Could you have given Genny any more heart stopping trials?? I can't tell you how many times I was holding my breath anxiously. Then in the next moment be so angry at the vermin in Genny and Cutters lives!! THANK YOU for (finally) putting them together and for making it so public!! I'm on to the next one in the series; can't wait to hear what Maddy has to say! And Bethani?? Uh oh!!!
Thank you for so many wonderful hours of enjoyment! Faye
Genny has always had a part in The Sisters series, but in this story she has center stage. She and Cutter’s blossoming romance has become a minor storyline on the series documenting the remodeling of her friend Maddy’s home. Postings on social media and local gossip focusing on #Gennicut have attracted the vengeful attention of two foes from Genny’s past, resulting in multiple attacks on her. With the filming of the final unveiling of Maddy’s home and Homecoming weekend, danger peaks. Romance and mystery in a Texas setting.
This is a very likeable bunch of characters with lots of interesting twists . I do wish however that the Kindle editors would spell "pus" correctly. Puss is a cat or a form of sexist slang. Pus is the nasty result of an infection. Mixing up the two makes for disruptive and occasionally humorous reading at a point that the author never intended. Use a dictionary. Spellcheck is notoriously unreliable.
Like mini love stories this 1 was a little bit predictable. The journey to the end was such fun that it doesn't matter.Weave in a mystery that spans decades and you've got an all-round great book. I'm trying to pace myself so I don't finish the series too soon. It's so hard to find a well written , satisfying book on Kindle Unlimited, let alone a whole series! Love it! Keep up the good work. Becki!!!
This is the best series! The setting of the series is near Bryan/College Station where I have lived for many years. The characters are well developed and charming. The story flows well and moves very quickly - keeping your interest as the main characters face danger and solve mysteries. I went to high school in a small town full of great people and family. These books remind me of that time. Read the first one and you will be hooked! I am on number 6!
This has been the best book of the series, in my opinion. The action is tight, and the story moves quickly to a rousing crescendo. Some parts were a little over the top, but the story was so good that I ignored that. Sisters, Texas Mystery – Total of 16 1. Chicken Scratch(2015) 2. When the StarsFall (2015) 3. Stipulations and Complications (2016) 4. Home Again: Starting Over (2016) ** 5. Genny's Ballad(2017) -- E 6. Christmas in The Sisters (2017)
This series is romantic and without the sex. It shows that even small close knit towns hold secrets, grudges but most importantly they pull together when one of their own is in trouble. It’s finally nice the house is finished and I can see it in my mind just like I can with the house that Cutter is building. There were a few grammatical errors in this one but it only interrupted the flow twice. I hope the rest of the series is as good.
I am so glad the author did this story about Genny. It explained a lot about Genny and her feelings about Cutter. And the suspense was an edge of your seat type of suspense. You could really feel Genny's fear and anger when dealing with those stalking her. I did miss some of the other characters, but I'm sure we will see them again. I will be anxiously awaiting the Christmas story to be released.
This is a romance that tries to be a mystery and falls back on some outlandish plot ideas at the end to fulfill the mystery part. There is a section in the book where some pages are repeated completely, needs to be edited out.
If you want to read a sweet little romance with some strange stuff pasted on to make it a mystery, this book is for you.
Ahh , the heartbreaking story of our sweet Genny. Absolutely love this glimpse into her life both before and after she moves to the Sisters. Her sad childhood, her stalker, her kidnapping and finally her upcoming wedding to Cutter. I laughed with and I cried for her. I was given a free copy by the author. My review is freely and honestly given
I love your books. I have read all through book 5. I am looking forward to reading the next one. Your books are so exciting and funny too. I love the granny. She is a hoot. It's just one fiasco after another but they always come out ok. Keep up the good work and God bless.👍
I just finished reading the 5th book in this series, and I can't wait to get started on the 6th! The character development is amazing, the storylines are extremely interesting, and the mysteries are intriguing enough to make you want to keep reading. Plus, these books are not loaded with sex scenes and vulgar language! A huge plus in my book!
I have been enjoying these mysteries during the pandemic. I wish I could have given this one a five star rating but there are many typographical errors in the text and I found it annoying. Loved the story and the suspense as well as the characters. Please proofread before publishing.
I love this series! It's lighthearted, simple, and clean. There isn't violence in the repulsive sense, there isn't sex, and I would not take the book away from a teenager. No, it's not deep, yes, it's cliche, somewhat predictable, and major male characters are great looking heroes and gentlemen. Yes, I still read every book in the series. Sometimes I don't want deep reading.
I thought the first books I'd read were great. This one went beyond. I could feel the love of these two just flow off the pages and into my heart. Few books can make shed a tear of joy. But this one sure did!
There are only a few books that come to life. This is one. Where is the next? I cannot wait! I need it NOW!
I simply loved reading the story about just Genny poor thing went through too much for one person but you absolutely made a big story perfect.. I loved it and think it was a super idea on your behalf to take another character from Maddie's story and do one just for Genny. Very clever thank you very much
Becki Willis writes wonderful characters and reveals the intriguing backstory with each additional novel. Genny's story is one we have all been anxiously awaiting. In true B.W. style, nothing good happens without a good read of danger and suspense first.
