Grumman F-14 Tomcat Owners' Workshop Manual: All models 1970-2006 - Insights into operating and maintaining the US Navy's legendary variable geometry carrier-based air superiority fighter
Probably best-known for its starring role in the Hollywood blockbuster Top Gun , the US Navy’s Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a supersonic, variable geometry, two-seat, carrier-based, air superiority fighter.
The Tomcat was developed for the US Navy’s Naval Fighter Experimental (VFX) program following the collapse of the F-111B project. The Grumman F-14 Tomcat Owners' Workshop Manual covers operating and maintaining this aircraft, and is filled with first-person insights into flying the Tomcat.
Published in 2018, Grumman F-14 Tomcat is one of many novelty Haynes manuals, this time focussing on the legendary US Navy fighter plane. Much of the book consists of anecdotes from veteran users of the type, whether as aircrew or maintenance. This is well supported by over 300 photos and numerous other illustrations. For fans of the Tomcat, and there are many, this is I think a very enjoyable book - however, look elsewhere if you want technical details and operational histories.
Not much info about the plane from a technical perspective, most of it seems to be accounts from people operating and maintaining the aircraft, which isn't as interesting as it sounds. The parts about the plane from a technical point of view are interesting though.
Solid read. Definitely taught me valuable skills I can take forward. You'd be surprised how often the ability to fly an F-14 comes in handy. I'm awaiting my commission as a Captain in the US Navy.
