The Twin Sheikhs

Rate this book
Blake is chosen to design a house for the impossibly handsome sheikh and crown prince of Al Huddah, Bassem Sedarous. Although the young architect is excited to land a big assignment, she is confused by his behavior. When they meet to discuss the project their conversations are awkward and he is very cold to her, but outside of work he is very friendly and seems to be a different person. After Blake learns Bassem’s secret and supports him in a difficult situation their relationship takes a new twist and they begin to fall in love with each other. When everything seems to be against them as a couple, Bassem makes a decision that nobody expected - not even Blake.

This was a rushed job if I ever saw one

Wow. Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed Rushed. How did they go from two kisses and unproductive communication to a proposal and love all in one chapter. UNREALISTIC IN EVERY WAY!

Painful to read…

The language was stilted throughout (i.e.,“I don’t care, I will not do it. Blake laughed. CJ laughed with her.”
“This pizza needs to hurry up and cook. I am starving.”). The addition of some apostrophes would have been a huge improvement. More awkward descriptions: “His body was in perfect shape. It was impressive.”, “He had such large and warm hands.”, and “His masculinity just made Blake’s insides melt.”

The romance and story arcs were completely unbelievable and the hero of the story (Bassem) was completely unlikeable.
Blake is given three days to complete sketches of the house for Bassem. She initially thinks it’s not enough time, but she agrees to the three day deadline anyway. Then despite the short deadline, she somehow finishes her sketches in two days, allowing her to go out and party with her friend (which allows her to meet Bassem’s twin and start that storyline). Why would she agree to go out clubbing when she needed to be at her best the next morning? Yes, she’s 26 years old, but she’s otherwise portrayed as a very responsible, professional woman.

Blake fell in love with a man who barely said two words to her, and when he did, it was cold and/or dismissive. At one point, Blake complains to Bassem’s twin Basil, “Why is he so cold?”…Basil replies “That’s how he is.” Bassem was so unemotional, he couldn’t even bring himself to return his own mother’s hug. (“She inspected him before she hugged him. Bassem just stood there with his arms at his sides. He wasn’t an affectionate person.”). Yeah…that’s the kind of man most women want to spend a lifetime with. Throughout the story, she seems to connect more with Basil than Bassem…to the point I thought the author might go that way with the story.

Inconsistencies abound…for example… Blake creates the design for Bassem’s house on 3 D software. She first shows her design to him in her laptop. Fast forward to when she shows him the revisions he asked for and she hands him a folder of sketches.

There is a scene at the beginning of the book which describes Bassem’s business ventures with a Mexican mogul. They discuss that their mutual fathers once did business together. Then nothing is ever mentioned of this character again.

Midway through the story, Bassem all of a sudden doesn’t seem to understand certain basic phrases. When Blake asks “Are you a coffee person?…Bassem replies “I don’t understand what that means.”, and when Blake says. “Your house is in safe hands.”, Bassem repliesI did not think your hands were dangerous.” I meant that I will do my job very well.” There is no implication that Bassem was joking with Blake.

Let’s not forget a sudden abduction of Basil that serves to push Blake and Bassem together. Apparently, Basil’s abduction stimulates Bassem’s desire for Blake and he attempts to kiss her twice amidst the search for Basil and waiting to hear from his kidnappers. After the second attempt, Blake says to herself “Damn those people with bad timing.” Yes, because that kiss is what should be most important when they are searching for his brother. The abduction story arc just ends nowhere after the King tells us who abducted Basil (a sheikh from a neighboring country and a business competitor.

Despite the fact Bassem has kissed Blake twice, he doesn’t recognize he may have romantic feelings for her until Basil suggests it…”Bassem wondered if his brother was right. Did he have romantic feelings for Blake or not? He hadn’t given it much thought.” Of course, the very next time he is near Blake, he can only think of her “curvy body and luscious lips” and has to “suppress the urge” to pull her into his arms and start kissing her again. In that same scene, he becomes irrationally jealous when another man (a builder at the house construction site) merely touches Blake on the shoulder.

Then, the romantic proposal….Bassem makes a huge romantic gesture by buying out an entire restaurant so they can dine alone…Bassem first tells Blake he is engaged, then proceeds to tell her he has no feelings for his fiancee’ (an arranged marriage), and then pulls out a diamond ring and says “I want to marry you and not her”. Swoon! Then they start talking about their feelings for one another for the very first time. It’s hard to understand exactly who/what Blake has fallen in love with when she knows almost nothing about Bassem except for what she learned about him at an impromptu dinner (the night before his proposal) where her mother, aunt, and friend asked Bassem all the questions about himself. Despite not being an affectionate person, Bassem seems to be an amazing kisser…maybe that’s what attracts Blake..but no…she tells Bassem’s mother, “I’m not with him for money, power, or sex. I genuinely love him.” Not even sex?

For some reason, I persevered in reading the entire book…not sure why, but I kept hoping the story might improve. The most I can say for this book is that it was a quick read.

The Twin Sheikhs

I liked this story, although it was a romance there was no swearing or anything in the story that would offend or that your teenagers couldn't,t read. It could have been longer it would have been interesting to know how the house turned out and what Bassett was really like with someone he was comfortable with.

I do enjoy any fantasy sheikh books, but they are all the same. If you want a break from reading your normal romance books, read some of the sheikh books.
