Trying to recover from the grief over the death of his wife, Cade McCall settles in Dodge City, “Hell on the Plains”. While drunk, Cade loses the saloon that he owns in partnership with Jeter Willis, rupturing a friendship that had stood for years. Caught up in the infamy of lawlessness and gun slinging that is Dodge City, Cade fights the battle against his own despair, and against the Slater Brothers who are trying to take over the town. He is aided in the struggle by his new found friend, Bat Masterson, old friend Jacob Harrison and the renewed friendship with Jeter Willis.

In book two Cade’s wife died. This book starts out with Cade drunk, gambling and fighting during his grieving process. He finally gets his act together after gambling away the bar he and Jeter own. Cade, Jeter, Bat Masterson and other join forces to bring law and order to Dodge City.
The book is well written and fast paced. The characters are being flushed out and are most interesting. Vaughan manages to unveil the story in an exciting manor. This is a book that is hard to put down. In the audiobook there is no overt sex or filthy language. I do hope there are more books coming out in this series.
I read this as an audiobook downloaded from Audible. The book is five and half hours. Clay Lomakaya does a good job narrating the book.
Another great western adventure of how the west was won. Cade and Jeter Willis friends who bought a saloon together. The monies they received from selling their cattle helped them. Also Cade married a Cajun woman named Arabella and her friend Magnolia married Jeter. This was because the women wanted to go on the cattle drive as cooks and the only way Cade would let her go with them if the got married which they did. The cook wagon was sent ahead and it was a bad idea because the wagon was captured by another bunch of cattle drivers who kidnapped their wives and abused them. It took Cade almost a year before he found Arabella and Magnolia. Arabella Cafes wife had just given birth and was dying. She asked to promise he would take care of the baby which he did and he told Jeter and Magnolia to take the infant because he was going after the men who had kidnapped his wife He found the men and shoot them both in the head. He left them were they fell, they were food for the buzzards and other meat eaters of the forest. Life wasn't very good for Cade, all he did was drink trying to bury his lost. He was pretty good with card playing, but alcohol and card playing don't mix.. You like a good western read this adventure and the many turns it takes. This adventure kinda of explores and gives you insight of how ruthless humans become. Action whether it's a shoot out in the many enterprises that operated in Dodge City or minor problems of embezzling real estate to army deserters lots of A C T I O N...

What did I like? This just keeps getting better and better, I love the history and research that the author did. I know that it takes lots of work to come up with the details that he included in this series. Loving it….
What will you like? Besides it being a western, it is very well written, grows and develops with each page and is so intense with emotions. If the last book wasn’t enough to have you in tears this one will definitely. It just seems like all the bad luck that was every around is hitting Cade and knocking him on his butt! On to the next one… Cade at The Walls.

This was a very good book, it kept me interested all the way thru the book, this is book 3 of a series of 3 books, Long road to Abilene is the first book, you will be glad you bought these books, the Kindle price is very good.
This appears to be the last book in the series. Hopefully that is not the case as it has been a really good western series and there could be at least 2 more that could be written to finish it in style. Suffice it to say, if you like westerns, give this series a try.
This was a very good story and fun to read. All 3 books in the McCall series is well worth the money and time to read. Thanks for the author for taking me along for a great adventure.
The Cafe McCall says was most enjoyable. I hope that Mr. Vaughn will be publishing more so we know about Cafe's further adventures. Please don't keep us waiting long!
The author has done a great job in continuing to tell the adventures of Cade McCall. This book is very enjoyable reading with a great emphasis on his beliefs and his actions. Fascinating story of hardships, adventure and loyalty.
This was truly another great Book in this Series about the life of Care McCall filled with tons of Action and Suspense. Just like Book 1 and 2 all are with a 5 Star Ratings and some of my very favorite Westerns!!
For the first time in decades I could not finish a book. It was the epidemy of Slooow. It had to be a Cowboy story because male players all had to wear Cowboy boots, because they were not smart enough to tie shoes. Total waste of time.
As usual Mr. Vaughan tells an excellent story of the old west an the taming if same. The story of Cade McCall was full of adventure love found and lost. Loved it
I was happy with all 3 books in this series. I love westers that are well written and keep my interest up, which I can say these did just fine. I haven't checked out if there are more of this series but would read more if available.
