She's back...
It's been six months since Dani gained revenge for the brutal death of her family. With a major crime syndicate now out of commission, the residents of London can rest easy in the knowledge that the streets are a little safer.
But crime is unending, a disease. London will never be safe.
With her own personal vendetta complete, Dani now takes to the streets to avenge the citizens of her city; the helpless, the suffering and the victimised, but it's not going to be a simple task. The crime world is now aware of her presence, the avenging shadow that stalks the unlawful in the night, but so are the police.
With no one to turn to, and wanted by both sides of the law, Dani must come to terms with her perilous situation, face her inner demons, and make the ultimate decision.
DANI is the follow-up to the bestselling psychological thriller GRIN, which is available on Amazon now! This book bridges the gap between GRIN and the incoming sequel, RESURGENCE.
RESURGENCE - The Sequel to GRIN/Dani Scott #2 Available 2018
At the age of seven, I fell in love with the written word. Since that fateful day, I've dreamt of writing my own novels. In April 2014, twenty-five years later, that dream finally came true.
Writing is, and always has been, my passion. I revel in creating characters, unique worlds, realistic environments, and situations and stories that hook the reader. Reading stories of this kind inspires me so returning the favour has always been important to me, as a writer and a fan of literature.
I'm also a co-director at Dark Chapter Press, an English-based horror publisher, so pop over to my website for more information, including a fan club, the latest submission calls and new releases.
DANI: A Dani Scott Novella #1, by Stuart Keane takes place six months after the events in GRIN. The author states that this novella spans the gap "between GRIN and the incoming sequel, RESURGENCE", which is projected to be available October 27, 2017. While some background to Dani is give, I recommend reading the novel GRIN to understand her entire story before reading this novella.
After planning her revenge and taking out one of the biggest crime lords in the city--following the slaughter of her entire family, and severe disfigurement she endured as a result of his orders--Dani is confronted with the fact that Ross Rhodes' reach extends much further than the "small army" that she single-handedly destroyed. On a self appointed mission to help those who are unable to defend themselves against men like this, Dani carries out her vigilante-style justice.
At the same time, those she thought she put down begin to organize their corrupt plot against her . . .
"Grin was a facade, an image created by one of the greatest crime bosses in London's history . . . a twisted character portrayed by the horrendous scars on [her] face . . . "
In this novella, Keane builds upon Dani's character--who she was, and who she is becoming. Complicating the issue is that although Dani is protecting the innocent--technically she is on the wrong side of the law, herself, now. The policeman who saved her life, Jack Scott, is torn between his sworn duty, and his sense of compassion in protecting this teenager who's entire world was shattered.
While still action packed, I felt that this story showed a more vulnerable, emotional side of both Dani and Jack Scott. She is still just a teenager, trying to find a place for herself in this new world she has been thrust into. Keane has expertly set up events to create this interlude of her life, that will both showcase her mindset and skills now, and leave some ramifications that will follow her through to book 2 in her saga, RESURGENCE.
Just how much of a chance does a lone woman with a mutilated face stand against all of the corruption AND the police force in London? Against the odds, she has resolved to find out.
"I'm Dani Scott, and there will be a resurgence."
Highly recommended, to be preceded by the novel, GRIN!
This review is written with thanks to Book Lover Cat Lady Publicity for my copy of Dani. It is eighteen months since Dani was attacked and her family were killed by Ross Rhodes' gang. Although Rhodes is now in prison, the streets are still not safe, and Dani is back to help the victims of those who are still working for Rhodes. However, Dani's work is not without risk, and she finds herself a wanted woman, by gang members and police officers alike, and she must decide what the future holds for her. Dani does not have the same level of blood, guts and gore that characterised its predecessor, Grin. However, this doesn't make the novella any less thrilling, and Dani has several twists and turns which kept me on my toes despite the shorter length. In some ways, I felt that the shorter length did affect my enjoyment of Dani, as it meant that some of the themes, which I would have liked to have been explored in more detail, appeared rushed. In Rhodes' gang members, Keane has created some truly despicable characters, and I found that the scenes with Paul and Gavin made my skin crawl. Keane has also included sections where he reveals each character's thoughts, and I felt this was very effective in helping the reader to gain insight into their true feelings and intentions, thus strengthening my opinions about them. This technique helped me to root for Dani once more, despite the illegal nature of her actions. Dani ends on a cliffhanger, which sets up the next instalment in the series perfectly, and I look forward to reading it.
This is a novella that takes place 6 months after Grin. Dani, who is now known simply as 'Grin', keeps watch over the streets of London, fighting crime and keeping innocent people safe. The problem is, this has placed her on the police watch list. Across town, Paul lives with his parents and is a seemingly normal person from the outside, but is Paul hiding a darker secret?
I enjoyed this novella. Having read it straight after Grin, I was still immersed in the world, and the characters. There is not as much gore as there is in Grin, but it was nice to read some of the backstory and to see things from multiple points of view, including Jack Scott, from the first book. I am looking forward to seeing what happens next!
Thank you to Stuart Keane and Booklover Catlady Publicity for the complimentary ebook copy.
Book one of five following the harrowing, emotional aggressive original book 'grin'. We follow Dani in her new role in life, fighting crime whilst trying to avoid being stopped or caught by the criminal underworld..and the police.
"There are no heirs and graces about his writing. It’s uncomplicated but at the same time has twists that you would not see coming so keeps itself out of the mundane category. A solid story, just not enough of the scary stuff for me this time."
