Meet twelve-year-old Lena. Nobody notices her, and she's happy to keep it that way, until she drinks a potion that turns her into a singing sensation overnight! Now, the most popular girl in school wants to be her friend, the boy of her dreams wants her attention and a certain famous popstar wants to eat her for breakfast! Lena is about to learn that talent comes at a price...
When Lena accidentally obtains a bit of potion that once belonged to a star, she gets more than she bargained for. But will her attitude cause her to push away friends and family?
This is a sweet middle grade read in a style reminiscent of Judy Blume. All of the characters, even the antagonists, grow on the reader. Looking forward to seeing more from this author.
I have to say this, I have to! 'Star Syrup' is really delicious. The book I mean. Though I wish I could taste some of the actual syrup....
Penny LeClair has cleverly woven in a magical element with the complicated daily life of a twelve year old girl. Lena has problems at school, difficulties with friends, trouble with boys, the longing for recognition plus an absent father. A lot to deal with. Throw in the awkward events set in motion by a visiting pop star and Lena is in trouble. Penny LeClair writes with sensitivity and humour about all aspects of growing up in a complex world.
I also appreciated the fact that there are so many female characters. I loved Aunt Jo and her wonderful clothes! I can definitely recommend 'Star Syrup' for any pre-teen girl. It can easily be downloaded and accessed on any device with the Kindle app, so a perfect read for the journey to and from school. And it can also be bought in hard copy, so all options are available. I hope we hear more about Lena, she is a most engaging character.
This was a very enjoyable read. It starts with the normal teenage drama of being a bit of an outcast at school. Lena is perfectly fine with her status just happy to make it through the day and get back to her Aunt's bookshop and the books she loves. At least she thought she was, but when a chance to impress the popular girl Xara comes up, Lena goes out of her way to do so despite warnings from her true friends of the consequences. Now things get really interesting once a major pop star comes to town. Lena discovers her secret to being a great singer in a potion bottle left behind. Lena uses the potion and discovers what it's like to have popularity while also pushing away those close to her.
The journey is one that's a joy to read and keeps you interested from start to the very last page. The characters are well written and come to life on the pages.
