Clare and the others go to the north on their mission to the north to fight the monsters but they are divided into teams and all and at first its tough to face them but then they do when the half awakened fighters among them engage the main ones and finally we have the moment where Clare fights Flora as other suspects them to be awakened and its fun to see the tension and all. Then great to see where Isley and Priscilia are and also about Haki. Their next villain: Rigaldo whose a lion.

Fun volume with lots of turn and twists and revelations of the villains and even better fight scenes that keep you engaged throughout. The art is great as usual and the fight scenes bring that level of "whats gonna happen" next kind of feeling.

[ Re-read in 2023. ]

On the first half of the volume, we get to see Raki once again, and oblivious to his case, he meets Isley and Priscilla in a human form. He goes with them without knowing that they’re the Creatures of the Abyss in charge of the attack in the village called Pieta.

The battle against the awakened in the North has become real serious. Rigaldo, Isley’s lieutenant, goes up front to fight against the group of Claymores and from the first moment, several of them are down in one blow –that’s how powerful he is.

The silver lion severs Undine’s arms, he injures June really bad and kills Flora and Veronica like they’re nothing. Can Clare and the others really beat him? Can they even survive against this enemy?

These past few volumes have been amazingly executed but since it’s all about the action, they’re fast paced! I can’t wait to read the next one!

Claymore 10

No organization talk, but there were some great quiet moments.

World: The art for this arc was amazing with a couple of really amazing looking Awakened Ones to fight. The world building here is very contained this time around, only focusing on the North and also the group of 27 Claymores that are up there on this force.

Story: The action this arc was insane, the pace was so fast and breakneck that there was barely any time to breath during the action, it was insane. However, after that there were some wonderful quiet moments which I have been wanting for a while not to build this group of characters into a team and also have them matter in the fights to come. Undine is a new character and giving her time along with Flora and others such as Jean makes for some really cool emotional impact at the end of this book.

Characters: I wanted quiet moments and character building and I got it this arc, with time spent between battle with new and old characters that allows readers to care about them the story is so much better. Isley we meet and he’s enigmatic and so is his Lion. Raki is confidently there which is way to convenient but oh well.

Solid arc that builds character to give readers emotional resonance when the story plays out.

Onward to the next book!

I still think this series is ugly, has confusing fights and poor character design, but the lore and the story just works so surprisingly well!

Took a little break from the series to return to an amazing volume, maybe the best yet! We finally get to catch up with Raki and spend some decent time with him, as well as getting to meet Isley, who has been hinted at and seems rather intriguing, and we even are introduced to a couple new members of the shadowy organization who's behind sending the recent yoma to fight the Claymores.

But we're not done! As engrossing as this volume was from the opening page, the final chapter is like nothing the series has seen thus far. Sure, this is a violent manga, with lots of severed limbs and a fair amount of blood splatter, but nothing even hints at the intensity of the violence and gore that is introduced in the final pages, and it makes for an incredibly effective moment. I'm no softy when it comes to gore (Berserk is my favorite manga, after all, and I watch A LOT of horror flicks), but a couple panels honestly kinda shocked me, as closing in on 2,000 pages of story, there's never been this level of visceral slaughter, and I did not see it coming whatsoever. Which I love; it's not often I get caught off guard by manga after reading for so many years.

If you're reading the series and you aren't up to this volume yet, you have some great stuff to look forward to. (By the way, why are you checking out reviews for volumes you haven't read yet?!) And if you stopped reading the series before you got this far, I would seriously consider picking it back up if you have the time and reading up through this volume for a second evaluation.

A bit confusing by the numbers of Claymore in this one. But it still awesome, action pack and we get to see Rakki a bit so it's good!

4/5 They're over so quickly but they're so enjoyable. The battle in the North get's well under way with 27 Claymore in the city of Pieta beset by all manner of Awakened Beings. 80% of this is all action frames. Beautiful action frames.

Eventually we do get to find out where Raki went off too and boy did he land in some bad company.

The volume ends in a cliffhanger and the Battle of the North will continue in Volume 11.

Not only is this volume great for action, but the Raki stuff was insane, and I can't wait to see how it plays out. The ending of the volume also comes out of nowhere. Kinda got chills, kinda got goosebumps. Just a little bit of a banger volume, I must say.

I've returned to Claymore, after a bit of a pause from it.

Volume 10 contains more fighting, more power, more Claymores, more ominousness (is this even a word?). Fairly standard shonen approach to things: battles = forwarding the plot, as long as people remember to drop info every now and then.

What I find fascinating is the Isley-Priscilla duo. The two look almost sweet and noble, even if the story up until now suggested they'd be horrible, savage monsters (well... they can be both, I suppose).

Finally getting close to where the anime split off. Fun times ahead. All I need to do is actually get down to buying the rest of this series.

Damn you tiny bank account.

Finito anche questo, decisamente meglio del volume precedente... Si introducono più personaggi (anche se, sicuramente, dureranno poco) e c'è un maggior approfondimento psicologico.

Meh... this book was basically one big fight scene. Cool when you're watching it on TV, but reading it... not so much.

The big 24 Claymores versus some number of Awakened Beings fight finally kicks off, and the first two and a half chapters depicting the battles are actually pretty cool. For now, there's just three Awakened Beings sent as scouts, and a lot of the Claymores introduced or brought back in the last volume get chances to shine. There's some neat uses of powers and interactions, with possibly my favorite being one of the monsters having a sort of mind control that's defeated by just moving the target out of range by kicking her. There's also some interesting wind down stuff post battle, with an exploration of the new character Undine and a chance for Clare to fight another incredibly fast swordswoman to see who's better. And it turns out there is one way to make me start caring about Raki again: have him found by the Awakened Beings who rule the North, except he has no idea they're monsters. At least, not yet. I am now curious to see where this idea will go, and I'm slightly more invested in the question of whether he and Clare will be able to reunite. After all, now Raki can tell her where Priscilla is.

The last chapter significantly raises the stakes and sees a veritable Zerg rush of Awakened Beings attacking the Claymores. It's at this point that I'm reminded that this is a dark fantasy series, as there's already a bunch of deaths among the heroes. Of course, with my consistent complaints about character designs, I have trouble knowing who a lot of them are. And I found the apparent death of Undine rather frustrating because she'd just been given some interesting character development. Then again, people have survived a lot of crazy stuff so far in this series, so it may be that I need to wait for the inevitable aftermath chapter to understand who's actually lived and died.

I feel like I do want to keep reading this series, but given that I've hit the last of the volumes that are overdue at the library and I have some other stuff I need to get to, I'm going to take a little bit of a break here. It does make me wish the volumes would have more natural stopping points in them rather than it feeling like the whole series has just been a constant rollercoaster lately. But I don't feel like binging another 17 volumes at the moment, so I'll be back at some later date to see where the big battle goes.

Today's post is on Claymore volume 10: The Battle of the North by Norihiro Yagi. It is the tenth the long running Claymore series, you need to have read the first nine volumes to understand the story. It is 189 pages long and is published by Shonen Jump Advanced. The cover has Clare with her sword drawn in a snowy scene. The intended reader is someone who likes dark plots, high action, and strong female characters. There is mild foul language, no sexuality, and lots of violence in this book. The story is told from third person close of the main character. There Be Spoilers Ahead.

Review- Clare and a group of Claymores are sent to the north to battle a group of Yoma that have banded together under the command of Isley, a powerful Awakened Being. When the warriors arrive, they find their new enemies to be unusually dangerous. They are incredibly strong, well organized, and seem to have a plan to dominate the entire region. Will the Claymores be able to stop this monstrous army?

Review- The volume starts with the action getting started and Yoma attack the city before anyone can truly prepare anyway. The Claymores do hold the Yoma back with no losses but we get some character development from the new Claymores. Clare does get outed as more powerful than her number but the leader does not push the matter. We do see Raki in this volume and he with the bad guys, unknowingly. Priscilla is heading towards Clare but something has changed in Priscilla, she is just a child again and she does not speak much. But the volume ends with twenty-four Yoma heading towards them and another big battle for the next volume.

I give this volume a Five out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.

(Zero spoiler review) 2.5/5
The next instalment of my new streamlined reviews for Claymore (because I am sick of wishing this series would change and improve. Yet more protracted, hard to discern, bland fight scenes. More generic, exposition heavy dialogue. Countless panels with the Claymores looking shocked, adding nothing to the narrative or experience overall, et al. I'm really growing weary of repeating myself. Curse my stubborn desire to keep reading and reviewing this series. I know, I know. I'm a glutton for punishment. We are treated to a nice little twist close to the end of this collection, although in keeping with the author's overall lack of writing ability, it is a weak fart in the wind compare to how a more competent writer could build up and execute it. Why??? 2.5/5
