OOOH, I DIDN'T THINK THE DAY WOULD COME WHERE I WOULD FINALLY CATCH UP, FINISH THIS THANG, AND WRITE A REVIEW. BABY. BAAABY. AYE. IT'S BEEN 2 YEARS. 2 YEARS!! WHAT AN AMAZING, AMAZING STORY.
AS YOU CAN TELL. tsumetai haru, a web novel, is exactly what the title means: "cold spring". SO. WITH THAT SAID. what is this amazingly, heart-wrenching, cute, fantastic, blissful story about? well, this story has about 11 main characters (yeah, 11), and maybe about.... say... 5 side-characters? but the first 250 or so pages (out of over 1300 lol) focuses solely on our main, MAIN, characters: haru and miyagi.
miyagi is a systems engineer that works for a company remotely from home. one night he's walking home and he sees a young boy collapsed on the ground, half-dead. this beautiful and broken figure is haru, and he's covered in wounds, bruises, blood, and is wearing a thin clothing in the cold month of february. miyagi is annoyed by this sight, but after calling out haru's name and not getting a response, he tries to call an ambulance. haru weakly yet immediately tries to stop him, fearing that the person he ran away from - his stepdad - would be able to find him if he goes to the hospital.
this begins the relationship between miyagi and haru. miyagi tries to nurse haru back to health, but this proves to be a challenge. haru was born at an orphanage, by parents named ren and nagisa who were also orphans and were forced to have sex with each other and ended up with haru at a very young age. when haru was 4 years old, ren ran away with his child and nagisa to start a new life. ren, however, physicially abused nagisa to the point that she filed for divorce and ran away with haru. she remarried, but this new husband would ignore nagisa and instead, pay "special" attention to haru. at her wits end with emotional distress, nagisa ended up writing a suicide note that blamed haru for her final decision, which was to ultimately... kill herself. after the death of his mother (he saw her cold, still corpse in the room she killed herself in), haru is then raised alone by his stepfather - isolated from the outside world. he grows up without an education and isn't able to read more than basic words or even know simple, everyday things such as "tomato" "cucumber" "ice cream" "birthday" "snow". throughout the years, he was stricken with poverty, neglect, rape, torture, etc - and finally, after being beaten almost to death, he attempts to (again) run far away from his stepdad's hold but ends up collapsing in the cold ground outside, not far from his place.
as miyagi tries to take care of haru, he experiences many challenges in doing so. haru suffers from PTSD, severe social anxiety, paranoia, depression, self-esteem issues, malnutrition, etc. and anything can pretty much cause him to go into hysteria. in the beginning, miyagi sees this as a total pain in the butt, but gradually as he spends more time with this person, he begins to be drawn to him. haru is an amazingly cute, adorable person that will make you cry and yet, will warm up your heart at the same time. you just want him to be happy, and it's really hard to read that every time you THINK it's going to get better, it frickin'... doesn't!! and that's why it took me so long to finish this. the first 200 pages were REALLY. HARD. TO. READ. OMG. and even after that... so many things happened that caused haru to be taken away from miyagi, to be raped, to be tortured, to be hospitalized, to lose his memories, it was. frustrating. throughout.
granted, there are some reeeally incredibly, cute moments in between the sad stuff. tsumetai haru has one of the MOST cutest scenes i've ever read in fiction. ever.
aside from miyagi and haru, this story also delves into the other main character's lives as they struggle to survive in a world they've always thought was constantly cold. tsumetai haru is divided into arcs, and each arc focuses on a pair of characters:
ren and yui - my ultimate favorite pairing in this series. remember ren? haru's real father? yeah, he's a huge dick in the beginning but after reading his arc(s), he became my 2nd favorite character, after yui. they have an amazing chemistry together. yui is an incredible character and my love for him knows no limits. he's so bubbly and happy-go-lucky, and is the one to break the ice in any awkward situation. even though he may seem like a happy guy on the outside, he isn't actually all that he seems to be, ON THE INSIDE... after his parents died, he was tossed around from relative to relative, verbally abused and blamed for his parents death for years (being called an unlucky child and bringing bad omens to the relatives' household), and finally having enough with the abuse - he decided to run away. he was saved from being raped by strangers by ren, but well. let's just say their relationship in the beginning was a physically, abusive relationship....
shou and yuu - shou is a former underground doctor, who picked up yuu, who was abused by his parents, sold as a sex slave, and then abandoned in the ditch in the woods to die. yuu is very tsundere, and understandably doesn't trust anyone. he tries to run away from shou several times, but always ends up back in the doctor's hands.
hiroto and asahi - MY SECOND FAVORITE PAIRING. and asahi... if his life wasn't so sad (he has the SADDEST life out of everyone, even haru) he would be my all time favorite character in this story. his arcs cause me to shed tears (!!!!), it's sooo painfully heart-wrenching to read. asahi grew up in the same orphanage as haru and ren, except unlike everyone else apparently, he was never given a name. people just referred to him as "it" "that person" "he" "thing" "doll", etc. his normal is being beaten, being raped, eating very little and eating the same bland food when he is given something to eat, and being physically tortured. hiroto, a doctor at the orphanage, saves asahi from being killed by the orphanage director. hiroto, who originally doesn't give two-shits about people, works for money and works for himself, rude as fuk, etc. was the one that gave asahi his name. asahi's mentality is worse than haru. asahi doesn't know anything. at all. he needs constant care 24/7. if you leave him alone, he will just sit and do nothing, starve, and die. you almost have to treat him like a baby. but he's soooo precious. he's has an incredibly pure heart, but he struggles to learn what "normal" really is. while he's in the care of hiroto, he would hurt himself because he's so used to feeling pain, that if he doesn't feel pain and see his own blood, he becomes anxious. in the sequel (which i will talk about later), you learn that he uses pain as a means to distract himself from unpleasantries as well.
but with the help of the other characters, he slowly but surely grows up mentally and emotionally throughout the story. asahi, just like the name he was given, is a beautiful, beautiful, character full of sunshine and radiance, just like the morning sun.
mikami and rei - mikami is a lawyer, and he helps to free rei from a life of prison after being part of a shooting at the very same orphanage that haru, ren, and asahi were raised in. unlike the other inhabitants of the orphanage, rei (like ren, but not to the extent of ren - who has photographic memory) is incredibly smart. however, rei's monologues are depressing as i don't even know. rei doesn't care about his own life. he lives to sacrifice his very own well-being for his precious twin, rui. he will gladly throw away his life in order to free his twin brother.
rui - he absolutely loves his brother rei, and doesn't understand why rei is so distant and cold towards him. he wonders if it's something that he did, but at the same time, would always try to get close to him like they once were when they were young. rei only acts cold because rei knows if he shows even an aota of affection towards rui, the director of the orphanage will kill either one of them in order for the survivor to continue living a life full of a lonesome, everlasting pain. rei doesn't care about himself, but he won't allow rui to suffer anymore than he already has (like being sliced in the face by a knife).
in between arcs are "short stories" that moco adds to lighten up the atmosphere. let me tell you, the short stories are amazing. AMAZING. it was what i wished tsumetai haru was all about. it's nothing but cute, hilarious interactions between the characters. her sequel to tsumetai haru, called atataka na haru (warm spring) is just like her shorts in the main story. nothing but cute, fluffiness. there is also a side story to the sequel called tsumetai asa, which focuses on asahi's past when he was a child until the present time and beyond.
this story holds an INCREDIBLE place in my heart. i remembered back in the summer of 2015 i was searching for japanese online novels to read, and while waiting for some that i was currently following to be updated, i noticed this story - rather new at the time - shot up straight to the top 3 rankings of online bl novels in the blove site. this immediately caught my attention, and i started to read the couple of pages that were available that summer. man... MAN. talk about depressing. life happened and i wasn't able to keep up with moco's almost daily updates, so about a year later, summer of 2016, i tried again. once i hit page 189, i was like YEAH NO. i got so attached to the main character so frickin' hard that i couldn't read anymore of it. fast forward to november of the same year and i tried again. basically here's a copy pasta from my blog: ----
1 - Nov 27 2016 - Reblog so. i’ve been on page 189 of tsumetai haru for like, 5 months. i stopped reading it because it’s just way too depressing for me. it got to the point that i was like, fuck this shit, i like life, i want to continue liking life, so byeee.
but now, the writer had updated and written 1139 pages (wow, so behind is a fucking understatement) and i’m just. like. wtf. did haru’s sad life actually become. well. not sad? because it’s kind of hard to write depressing shit for 1139 pages. 1139 pages of non-stop angst? yeah. there has to be some happy somewhere in there.
do i dare? DO I DARE START FROM THE BEGINNING AND TRY ONCE AGAIN TO READ THROUGH THIS?
2 - Nov 27 2016 - Reblog lol forget it, i ain’t reading that at 1am. fuck that, nope.
3 - Nov 27 2016 - Reblog lol never mind, i’m gonna do it. i’m gonna fucking hate myself but i’m gonna do it.
4 - Nov 27 2016 - Reblog lol nope can’t do it --- that was pretty much the extent of my struggle. fast forward YET AGAIN to february of this year (2017) and i decided to screw it, fuk it, tie it to a ballon and have it fly away, and to read through it ONCE AND FOR ALL. --- 5 - Feb 05 2017 - Reblog this shit is angsty as fuuuuck. i remember dropping this at like page 200 bc i was like naw bruh that’s ok. the first time i read this was in 2015. it’s been like 2 fuckin’ years. will i ever make progress? will haru ever be happy?
6 - Feb 06 2017 - Reblog WTFUK will haru ever be happy????!!!!
7 - Feb 06 2017 - Reblog UGH i can’t read this shit anymore.
8 - Feb 06 2017 - Reblog NOT HAPPY RIGHT NOW
9 - Feb 06 2017 - Reblog FUK THIS i can’t read this anymore. i am legit scared for this poor kid’s future. and i don’t fuckin’ wanna know what happens to him from here on out. nope. i can’t. DEAL.
I’M SAD AND I WANT TO BE IGNORANT AND SAY HE LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER. ----
yeeeah as you can tell, i was living in frustration nation. but i'm SO glad i ended up finishing this fantastic piece of fiction. it has been a WILD RIDE. i can't recommend this story enough. you have no excuses not to read this. even though this is published and can be purchased online, moco STILL distributes and updates her stories FOR FREEEEE so everyone can read it. moco has a job, but she writes during her free time. she's incredible, and i asked her if she ever has plans on becoming a pro writer. she thought about it, but for now, she just wants to write as a hobby. as she updates atataka na haru and tsumetai asa on her blog, she is currently working on a new story called 眠れない夜のお話 (nemurenai yoru no ohanashi - a story of sleepless nights).
tsumetai haru isn't 100% perfect from beginning to end, and does come with its own faults, but OVERALL?? the characters are AMAZING. the characters MAKE this story. it's not even the plot itself, it's the CHARACTERS. ALL. OF. THEM. since it's available for free (for now, who knows for how long???) you have no excuses not to read this!! i read from the blove app, which makes viewing, saving the pages to read offline easier (load pages, don't exit the app!), BUT.... you can also read them on your browser here:
atataka na haru (sequel, currently being updated, and divided by pairings), along with asahi's side story called tsumetai asa (tags are your friends!!): http://mocoice.jp/archives.html
i love this story so much. whenever i'm down, happy, tired, bored, need inspiration, motivation, or need to be cheered up, etc i always come back to tsumetai haru. i pick an arc depending on my mood and read away. i am so grateful for moco for blessing me with this breathtakingly beautiful story. do yourself all the favors and join this amazing ride.
