Not terribly original, but done decent enough to be a good read. Don't really care to know where it goes, but will follow it for a bit.

The picture of the badass warrior woman partnered with a panther on the cover promises what's to come later, I imagine, not what's to come in this issue. We know what the girl named Rose has some sort of powers and even see hints of those powers. Something terrible happens and she must flee.

Rose is a dull sort, more like the early Disney princesses - pretty and radiant, but not much personality or drive. And the story is also a dull sort, with a dull kind of villain who wants nothing more than the fall of the kingdom. Not very original, and not compelling enough for me to continue.

I'd heard about this on twitter so thought I'd try it. It was nice to see a woman as the chosen one in a fantasy story, but I feel like it was done a lot better in the fantasy novels I was reading as a teen. This was all very black and white storywise. The Evil Queen, was over the top in evil, and such general characterisation I find a little dull. It was promising but a bit more normal than I was expecting.

Okay there is like WAY too much going on for a first issue. Like please, calm down. We've just stepped into this new world as a reader so don't blurt a 3 page backstory and then expect us to know what's going on. Just not gonna happen.

This first issue didn't particularly grab my attention. The art was nice but story was pretty basic. Reminds me way too much of that Snow White movie with Kristen Stewart in it. I think I'll give this one a pass and ignore the rule of three... :P

Having two dark skin people one of them dead in first few pages pages the other a villain does not make a diverse world.
I liked this one when I went to sleep but woke up and didn't like it. Did I really like it in the first place? I don't know I may try the next issue.

Amazing Art, Awkward Pacing, Every Bad YA Trope

Look I love a femme power ballad in book form, especially if they have a bonded animal companion. It seemed like Rose would have checked all my boxes but I couldn't get over a few icks.

Pacing: This comes down on Finch and Guara, both. The art, paneling, and story pacing never allows the reader to become impacted with the emotions of the characters leaving emotional scenes to feel flat and unimportant. Furthermore, the volume moves too fast in an unnatural manner.

Rose: If you took the YA female protagonist tropes and put them in a blender, Rose would be what was left on the blender walls after you poured a glass. She's almost like a caricature. The development of her powers was underwhelming and her character transformations were unpivitol when they should have been. Her powers also make no sense since she seems to have all of them. Her constant referring of herself as "stupid" as downright counteractive to trying to write a strong female story. At the end of volume 1 I have no idea what her personality really is! So far it seems to be "waaah my village! I am going to exact vengeance and face death!" And then in the next scene it's "if only I wasn't a stupid girl who's bad at saving people. I can't do anything right :(" And volume 1 Rose just rapid fire switches between these two modes: confused and ditzy then brave and conveniently momentarily competent before she's trips again (she's so quirky and clumsy 🤪).

The Villain: Villain trauma dumping is great and all but out of nowhere?? Right in front my salad like that??? It doesn't build a good character, it just makes them seem...desperate, small, petty, and living in the past which makes them pretty uncompelling as villains. In the start, we the audience should be afraid of the villain just as the protagonist is before their humanity is revealed later. The info dump was just unnecessary. And also this villain origin story just feels like it's giving angry female self-determination a bad name... It's painting feminine rage in a bad light and that's not very cash money.

I do not think I will be reading volume 2 seeing as every character is flat and Rose is insufferable. That's a shame. The concept and world could have been really great if executed better.

Rose #1 gets this new series off to a solid start, with a world where magic is forbidden being an intriguing backdrop for a fantasy tale. The creative team also do a wonderful job of introducing us to both our protagonist and antagonist, as despite the former seeming a little lost in her ways, the latter leaves us more than enough promise moving forward.

First of all I am not a fantasy girl so there has to be something more than just the fantasy elements to get me hooked, and this definitely didn't have anything else. The cover is so cool, but I guess that's going to be for later on down the line. This was just the introduction and everyone seemed kind of cardboard and while Rose certainly went through a lot in this first single issue, it really didn't leave much of an impression.

A decent start! Wasn't a fan of Meredith Finch's Wonder Woman run but wanted to give her a second chance, and this first issue was decent enough! Artwork is amazing! Interested to see where this one goes!

The cover might give away more than this issue was willing to tell you, but a good first issue.

The issue ends rather abruptly, but this is a strong intro overall. Definitely will read more.

The art is somewhat off (weird lips, weird expressions), the writing is boring and offensive (the bad one is a black woman who wears short of nothing, great.). Nope. Not for me. Won't continue buying this.
