Detective Lonne Moberly has returned to her hometown of Maybe, Kentucky. This is where she grew up ... and took over her father's place as he is in an assisted living facility, catatonic.
A man driving along a country road, is killed by someone on a motorcycle toting a shotgun. A blast rings out and the car goes out of control and crashes. The victim leaves behind a wife who is deployed overseas and a young son.
Lonnie and her partner can find no motive, no witnesses. Where their investigation leads them is astonishing.
This is a well-written police procedural novella with skillfully drawn characters. It's action packed, with multiple suspects to follow. Lonnie is a strong female protagonist very worthy of a series ... a fast engaging read. There's just a hint of a possible romance in the future.
This is a book I picked up because I liked the cover, liked the book blurb. I'm glad I didn't pass it up.
I felt like this never really hit the right stride. It has a lot of potential but it never quite realised it. The writing at the start with clunky, the transitions between scenes never quite evolving naturally.
That said it was an enjoyable read. There were hints of humour and personality from the characters and I'd like to get to know them better. Lonnie was really interesting. She has interests outside of work, interior design, renovating and designing and sewing her own clothes. (I kind of want to see pictures of her wardrobe - I like her style!) She's dedicated to her dad and her entire family (even though we haven't gotten to see much of them yet) and I like that she was compassionate and caring for the victims. But it was a combination of being too short and not quite settling into the groove quick enough that's left it short a few stars.
The motive for the murder was a bit thin but I liked the procedural nature of the book and how the plot unfolded. The romance was a little odd, but again a victim of not enough character development. I'll definitely pick up the next one. There's a lot of potential here, a bit of reworking and development could easily see it pick up the extra stars, but as is, 3 stars.
Detective Lonnie Mae Moberly returns to her hometown of Maybe, Kentucky to help take care of her elderly father in an assisted living facility. Alan Daniels was killed along a country road and leaves a grieving wife and young son. While Lonnie investigates the case she discovers that a witness stated he heard a motorcycle and a loud blast. Lonnie finds that Alan was shot and tries to find out the killer’s motive for murdering Alan. I really enjoyed this incredible short story crime fiction novel.
I have found a binge worthy Crime,Suspense series with just a hint of underlying romance. I find it fabulous that the female main character has a strong male name. The supporting characters are interesting and unique. Rob, her possible future love interest has a complicated past. If you love quick reads these novellas will fit the bill perfectly.
I've read all 4 of the books in this series. There short but still interesting and make it fun to try and figure out the mystery with them. If you don't want to be reading for hours these are for you. I just have one question, unless I missed some book I still have no idea how Lonnies dad ended up catatonic? If you know the answer throw it in a review for me. Thanks.
If you're looking for a light, fast paced, easy read you're in luck. This isn't a Grisham multi-player thriller with 30 characters to keep track of. It had a nice little twist at the end. What's with late 20th and 21st century authors and their poor grammar and punctuation?
The character development was lacking and the plot didn't have any depth. It is basically an emotionless whodunnit with weak links between the evidence. There's a budding romance, but no passion or heat. It barely held my interest. Fortunately, it's not a long story. Borderline boring!
Cleverly written and fast moving! Really liked it!
If the next stories are as good as this prequel was, I am totally in! Strong and feisty Lonnie is a terrific lead character, and her team is top notch. Well done!
I love this & I can't wait for more. I will be also leaving a review on Goodreads @ Amazon. And letting everyone know about it. So i gave it a 5 Stars.
Lonnie is an interesting and likable character. You get pulled into the mystery of a murder, maybe two and the personal life of Lonnie. Look forward to more stories.
About an hour and a half is what it took to read this book. It was quite interesting so I could not stop till finished. If you like a good murder here it is.
