A succubus demon getting spooked by things that go bump in a hotel.
Q:
I am a succubus demon. The word of note there being demon. A monster. ... (c)
Q:
We all have demons, Allegra. Yours might be a little more real but that doesn't mean I don't understand it to some extent. (c)

This succubus loves her cosmetics regime, bathes with oils, makes sure to work in beauty industry (to keep her demon in check better), is prone to contemplating her skin health and beauty a lot and is scared of wrinkles almost more than of draughrs. Q: ... relief poured over her that no wrinkles marred the perfect smoothness of her skin. (c) Yes, she's like that after having unearthed a dead body and performed a ritual.

She knows how to make her friends. Even her overly caffeinated manager says so:
Q:
I imagine you win all kinds of friends by accusing them of murder. (c) Of-effing course she does.

Q:
“There is usually so much more to a woman than meets the eye.” (c)
Q:
There were always ways to remove a threat, no matter how ethereal. (c)
Q:
“Stop this, Allegra,” she ordered. “Fear does not rule you. You were trained by the best. No matter what comes, you have what it takes to fight back. You are worth all of your siblings at once, and some shadowy monster has frightened you?” (c)
Q:
You’re stronger than this, Allegra, she scolded herself. (c)
Q:
… when she felt the skin between her eyebrows bunch together, she smoothed her expression. She would be even more upset if this situation gave her wrinkles, and she had been frowning too much already. (c)
Q:
You? Not liking drama? Allegra, you are a whirlwind. (c)
Q:
Beauty offered the illusion of innocence, masking what was hiding beneath the surface. (c)
Q:
… her demon shuddered. She had to get away from here. (c)
Q:
She felt rejuvenated in his presence, even without feeding on him.
She wished it were enough to sustain her — that she could feed on their spark without taking anything away from them. Without turning something beautiful into nothingness. (c)
Q:
“No matter how many mysteries are solved or how many ghosts get banished, there will always be monsters to fear in the dark.” (c)
Q:
She would monitor each of her words and expressions, her reactions and gestures, so that no one else noticed the differences she felt in herself. (c)
Q:
The hotel won’t need monsters while he’s still around. (c)
Q:
She cast out her mind to search for any otherness about him… (c)
Q:
The cold air blew past her face and she sucked it in, the taste of the rain sweeter than any champagne. …
So she focused on the wind, on the rain pattering against the wooden roof of the gazebo, on the scent of late-season asters wafting across the lawn. (c)
Q:
What could be stranger than a draugr? (c)
Q:
Channel the fear into excitement. Her aunt’s voice spoke in her ear through the haze of memory. Not to fear is naïve, but all energy can be turned into something useful. (c)
Q:
Then the monster turned and fled. (c)
Q:
She was never one to be afraid of the dark, being a creature of the darkness herself, but today, Allegra dreaded staring into the nothingness — afraid of what she might find staring back at her. (c)
Q:
He had stolen Matthew’s chance to step into the darkness, and Allegra’s to experience the light. (c)
Q:
Chance. Such a daughter of a harpy. (c)
Q:
The storm fell over the city much like the darkness of her dreams… (c)
Q:
It feels…incredible. Like going for a run and then drinking a half-dozen espressos. (c)

You wouldn't think that you'd find a succubus relatable as the main character of a book. I mean, she has sex with men and feeds off them, killing them in the process. How many of us can relate to that? Don't look at me like that - I walked away from all my exes with their souls intact, even though some of them deserved a different fate.

I've read all of the books in this series so far, so I knew what I was getting into with Allegra from the prequel novella, "The Invisible Entente." If you haven't read that yet, I do recommend it along with "Death at Peony House" and "Song of Wishrock Harbor". Each of the books in the series can be read on their own, but you'll have a much richer experience knowing what has come before.

Now, where was I? Oh, yes, relatable. I will admit it took a little bit of time to get there, as the first pages were filled with a conquest that she refers to as "breakfast." Immediately I felt like I was "seeing" through Allegra's eyes, and - should I admit it? - I felt sensual and wanted just as she was sensual and wanted. I've always wondered what it would be like to be so beautiful every eye is drawn to me and to be able to be as bitchy as I wanted without repercussion. I got to have those experiences through Allegra.

As the story progressed, I found that she's plagued with fears and insecurities just like we all are, and she became a very deep and (like I said) very relatable character. I believe she may be my favorite of those I've met so far.

I won't go into the plot to not give away any spoilers, but the book is full of the twists, turns, suspense, and surprises that I've come to expect from this author. Just when you think you know what's going on everything gets turned upside down.

What will happen next in New Haven? Something big is coming, and I can't wait to find out what it is!

I received a complimentary ARC from the author for review consideration. It may seem that she holds a spell over me, but I swear all these opinions are my own. As far as I know, that is...

Shadows In The Garden Hotel by Krista Walsh is the third book in her Invisible Entente series. It is written in third-person and is from Succubus, Model Allegra Rossi’s point-of-view. This is an urban fantasy horror, with a bit of romance and a lot of mystery thrown in.

Allegra has been in both previous volumes of the Invisible Entente and of course, was first seen along with the rest of the main characters in the prequel novella. This is the first book with her as the main character. Allegra is a hard character to like, she is arrogant, selfish, and quite cold; but the author doesn't waste an opportunity for character growth and by the end of the book she is a much more 'human' character.

Ever since I read the first two books in this series I am hooked. This series has everything you could want from a supernatural mystery. I have to admit that I still have to read the prequel novella, which I think will only enhance the reading enjoyment even more, but I like meeting all these characters outside of the one case that brought them all together. I'm therefore quite happy that I grabbed all three available arcs from BookSirens when I got the chance.

I think this book was the most emotional out of the three I read so far. And that's mostly because the main character might be the most interesting character out of the three mains I met so far. Our heroine is layered, complicated and most of all struggling with herself. This book is not about the case she's solving, this book is about our heroine growing as a person and as a succubus. The case is nothing but a tool to help her find the person she truly wants to be.

That doesn't mean the case isn't interesting. On the contrary. I quite liked this case and I liked how different it was from the previous two cases. I have to admit that I saw some twists and turns coming, but that has never been a deal breaker for me. On the contrary. It usually means that an author created a solid foundation for the story and doesn't let things come out of nowhere. Knowing what was going to happen also didn't make the finale any less spectacular.

Walsh doesn't just give us a great heroine and an interesting case though, she also crafts this amazing and beautiful location that really comes to life with every description. It's a true talent to make a location be more than just a place where the characters meet. Walsh has that talent. Her writing is amazingly atmospheric and more than once I had chills rolling down my spine while reading. It almost feels like I'm pulled into the story and standing alongside these characters.

I will certainly check the rest of the series out too. I really wanna know what's truly going on!

*I received a complimentary advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

I've been following the Invisible Entente series since the start, and was very much looking forward to reading more of Allegra's story. A succubus makes a very unusual central character but, as with the previous books, Walsh does a great job of fitting her into the real, ordinary world. I find the mixing of the supernatural and the familiar one of the most enjoyable features of Walsh's writing.

This is undoubtedly the most emotional of the three novels. It's also the most adult in its subject matter, and not just for the obvious reasons. The story, I must admit, did not go in the direction I expected. Allegra comes out of it a much richer character than she at first appears. There is self-discovery and development in here, spiced with a handful of spookiness and a dash of horror, but it's definitely not an unimaginative, predictable road-to-Damascus-type tale. Skirting round any spoiler risk, I think I can say that the story looks at the line between altruism and self-interest, and at the nature of self-image, without becoming worthy or losing its momentum. It's a really absorbing book with great pace and tons of interest, plus quite a bit of humour.

Now that it's had time to settle in my head, a couple of loose ends have occurred to me. Since this is part of a series, they may be tied up later on, but I was a bit unsatisfied by the way one particular character was dealt with. The explanation felt a bit too simple. I hope the issue resurfaces in a later book. I think that is really my only criticism - I loved this book and I'm still excited about the ones we've still got to come.

First off I loved reading Shadows in the Garden Hotel... I have read all of the books previous and like them.. and I have to say that Allegra's story is my favorite. It has Mystery, Excitement, and Romance all in one.
Allegra as we know from the first Novella "The Invisible Entente", book 1 Death at Peony House with Daphne (our wonderful Sorceress) , and book 2 Song of Wishrock Harbor with Gabriel (a Gorgon)... Allegra Rossi is a Succubus who feasts on the souls of the Men she takes to bed... it is her way of life of how she survives.
Well in the Shadows in the Garden Hotel Allegra is called to come model for an exclusive Modeling agency to help put the Hotel back on the Map. Now this Hotel is very old with a hidden secret and a big mystery. A secret that Allegra feels that she must take on herself to solve.
As I started reading the first page I knew that it was going to really good.... I was pulled in and literally felt every feelings and emotions that Miss Allegra Rossi. Her strength and wonders are amazing and she is a beauty to beheld.
There are a few parts that made me laugh... parts that surprised me to know end... and parts that really tore my heart into pieces... of which once when you read Shadows in the Garden Hotel you will see why...
I highly recommend reading this book to all who have read the first 3 books in this series... you will enjoy and love it...
and if you want to know what the mystery is... you need to read Shadows in the Garden Hotel...

Allegra's story keeps you as enticed as her victims

I have been reading Krista Walsh's books since the first of her Andvell series and now i eagerly await each new book she puts out as i finish the one before. I am totally hooked on The Invisible Entente series and was thrilled when I was able to read this new one (annoyingly, this was not as soon as I had hoped since I had to wait a few weeks as I finishec the final assignments of my graduate program). The wait was worth it (thougn I am sure Allegra is always worth any wait).
For anyone looking for a new series, pick this one up. I am sure it will have you wanting more with one taste - Allegra would never have it any other way.

WOW!!

As an early reader and huge Krista Walsh fan, I was delighted to read this latest installment from the Invisible Entente series. This takes things to a whole new level!! Steamier and scarier (and sadder) than the previous books, and every bit as well-written/"charactered"/plotted, this is a compelling read!!! From her appearances in previous books, I didn't much like Allegra Rossi, and wasn't sure how an entire book about her would work. She grows and changes without compromising her essential nature & I was very impressed and much warmer toward her by the end. Still not sure I'd want to get coffee with her, but she is fascinating from a safe distance!

I have read every one of Krista Walsh's books, from the first of her Andvell series to this latest addition to the Invisible Entente series, and each book seems to get me more and more hooked. I am not sure I can wait for even an advanced copy of the next book to come out (especially since it will be about Vera who so far is my favourite character of this series). Krista's stories are fun, intriguing, and engrossing and her character development is so good you begin to think of her characters as friends (or enemies in some cases). She has quickly become one of my favourite authors.

Allegra Rossi is a succubus. She's smart, materialistic, rude, and generally out for what's best for her. Not much to like there, is there? Here's why you should read this book. Allegra is also funny, occasionally sweet, and slowly discovers there's more to herself than even she realized. The scary twists in this book just kept on coming. This is by far the best in the series. The overarching mystery slowly deepens and I can't wait to find out how it's all going to play out.

Best one yet!

I have read all of the Invisible Entente books and this is,, by far, the best one yet! I wasn't a fan of Allegras's character in the first books, but the author has portrayed her as a being with real emotions and needs, no matter that she isn't human. The twist at the end was well done and I did not see it coming! I can't wait to read the future ones when they come out. Krista Walsh is definitely one of my new favorite authors!

This is the 3rd book in the Invisible Entente series. And I’ll say this in this review as I’ve done in the previous 2 - you don’t need to read the prequel, but it adds more depth to the story!
In this story, the succubus, Allegra Rossi takes center stage. She has built up a career around the world modeling, but ever since the time spent with the other 6, she has been unable to stay away from New Haven. Taking a modeling job with the local magazine, she ends up doing a week long shoot at the Garden Hotel. While there, she starts to notice things out of the corner of her eye and gets strange sensations.
In her search to save herself from these creatures, she is drawn into a supernatural mystery. Can she figure out what these creatures are and how to stop them before they manage to finally get her?
This book is the perfect blend of paranormal and supernatural, with some horror thrown in as well! And the characters are absolutely wonderful! I love how this book shows such a different version of Allegra than we have got glimpses of in the previous books. With people like Matthew and Cody, how can she not start to feel human! And I think that so far this book has been the most emotional! I was so invested in what I thought was going to happen that I couldn’t even imagine what did happen! And my poor heart had all the feels! What an ending!! I can’t wait for the next book!

When I started the book, I knew that Allegra wasn't very high on my list of favorite characters. I even preferred to read the fourth book before turning to her story.
To anyone who felt the same way, I'm glad I finally read it. Allegra has worked her way up to the top, which she now shares with Daphne.
The ability to write a character like Allegra Rossi is absolutely admirable. I never thought I would empathize with her like that. Never!
It is an exciting book that made me waver between my own theories almost to the end. And that's something that rarely happens.
I can't wait to get into the final books, even though I'm getting sad at the thought of leaving the side of these characters.
Highly recommended for any fan of the series and for everyone else... start reading it. The series is filled with wonderful characters and the world already feels completely familiar after the first book.
I can't say more than this is becoming more and more my absolute favourite. Anyone who likes stories about supernatural beings and hidden magic in the world should give the stories a chance.

Shadows in the Garden Hotel, we meet the next member of the 'Invisible Entente' Allegra Rossi. Super model extraordinaire and succubus.

Allegra has been trapped in New Haven. When she has tried to leave she experiences horrid nightmares and a terrible weight on her where she just can't breath or function until she goes back to New Haven. This is a disaster for this globetrotting succubus.
On her latest gig at a historic Garden Hotel has her literally looking over her shoulder as she feels she is being watched. And she's right! Add murder and creepy atmospherics and you have a great addition to the series.

The author did a great job of bringing this character to life. You really do just want to slap her silly. Allegra does end up showing a surprising amount of grit and empathy towards the end. Still don't like her but can certainly understand her better.

This book is written from the Succubus, Model Allegra Rossi point of view.

I've read all of the books in this series so far, so I knew what I was getting into with Allegra from the prequel novella, "The Invisible Entente." If you haven't read that yet, I do recommend it along with "Death at Peony House" and "Song of Wishrock Harbor". While each of the books in this series can be read on its own, you will have a much more enjoyable experience if you read them all.

Now I was really worried when I started this book, I mean seriously how can you enjoy and fall in love with a soul-sucking succubus? But somehow Krista Walsh managed to make me do just that!

I won't go into ANY details because I do not want to spoil it by writing anything at all, other than one single sentence. GO GET THIS BOOK AND ALL THE OTHERS IN THIS SERIES!

Allegra takes the stage as the main character in this book. As she stumbles into a mystery, she gradually discovers a more humane side of herself.

I found Allegra's soul searching excruciatingly belabored. However

the mystery was entertaining. The secondary characters also kept my interest although Michael seemed too good to be true

Still waiting to see what darkness will befall New Haven.

I received an advance ARC from Booksirens. I am leaving my honest review.

I love the mythical characters and magic mixed with the real world element. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I did not enjoy this as much as the previous in the series. I suppose because the character is a demon and a succubus, it hardly has you rooting for them.
