Book two in the New York Times and USA Today bestselling Rose Gardner Investigations series.

Rose Gardner is trying to build a new normal. One that leaves the Fenton County crime world—including James “Skeeter” Malcom, the current king—behind. Her best friend and roommate is a big part of that effort, but Neely Kate is busy building her own life anew. She disappeared for a few days, scaring the spit out of Rose—which is why Rose finds it impossible to deny her when she suggests they look for a missing parrot. Neely Kate pretends she’s only interested in the reward money, but Rose doesn’t believe it for a minute, especially after she discovers they’ll be working with a cranky private investigator known as Kermit the Hermit. Rose sees it for what it is: another bid for them to become private investigators.

If nothing else, it’s a good distraction…until one of James’s nemeses, Buck Reynolds comes calling for help. James’s brother has gone missing, and Reynolds is number one on the crime king’s suspect list. Only, according to him, he’s innocent.

Rose had promised herself she was through with the crime world, but however angry she is with James, she wants to see his brother safe. Besides, can she really say no when she might be the only one who can keep order in the county?

Rose Gardner and Neely Kate return for the second book in this new series. An old man's parrot has gone missing and it's somehow tied in with the disappearance of Skeeter Malcolm's brother. Skeeter thinks his brother was kidnapped by his main rival in Fenton County's criminal underworld but Rose smells a rat.

Books by Denise Grover Swank can be a little hit and miss. When she hits a home run, she knocks that ball right out of the park but she's written a book or two that were disappointing. For the Birds is out of the park, over the freeway and into the river on the other side. It's great. One of her best books, probably my personal favorite.

Oh my word. This series. I'm just completely enamored with it.

The Gist: Skeeter's brother has gone missing and now someone's trying to kidnap Rose. There's a war brewing in the criminal underbelly and Rose is going to make sure that..does not happen. If she can find a way she'll keep the peace between the different criminal parties. There might be a missing parrot, too. And some nekkid shenanigans with a crime lord.

Rose continues to be an awesome heroine. She's got some innocent vibes to her now and again though she's getting tougher and tougher as the series goes along. She's got some guts and is more than willing to take a risk if it means keeping the people she loves and the county she lives in safe. She's got a little bit of a bad ass side.

And James. Well. I do love me the county crime lord. Woo boy! He's dangerous with a soft underbelly where Rose and her dog are concerned. He's quickly becoming one of my favorite heroes. And I'm hoping will become Rose's guy for real.

The mystery was good. A missing parrot. A missing brother. An almost kidnapped Rose. Lots of people acting all hinky. Not sure who you can trust or what's really happening. It was a good mystery and kept me going for a while though I did figure out a good bit of it before the reveal. My only complaint was I wanted more James. I really did.

The romance was understated as usual. These are really mysteries with romantic elements not full out romances. But I loved what was there. It was slightly bittersweet but has me hopeful. These two are so good for each other yet their lives on opposite sides of the line and they struggle with being on different sides of the law or moral line.

All in all...I loved it. This series (and the original series-- this one is in the spin off series) is just addictive. I love the world, the characters, the romance, the friendships, the mystery. It's just an amazing mix of bookish goodness you have to try out.

Rose wants to put her past behind her. After James latest betrayle, she is determine to leave the Fenton Country criminal world behind and just focus on her landscaping business and living a quite normal life. But Rose isn't really destined for a quite life and no matter how hard she tries trouble always has a way of finding her.

What I loved about this book is seeing all the main characters are finally starting to heal from the events of the past and are beginning to live their lives again. Rose has finally put Mason in her past and is ready to move on. However she is struggling with her feelings for James, the head of the crime world. In order to move on from James she decides to date the hot new vet in town, but every time she is around him, she can't be help think about James.

I will say that I have always been anti-James in this series and didn't believe I would like them together, but boy was I wrong. Rose's life is in danger once again and after a brush with death she no longer cares to fight her feeling for James. I was surprised much I like Rose and James together and interested to see if they can really make a relationship work, but we all know Rose has never been lucky in love.

I loved how Rose and Neely Kate are looking to become PI's and they finally take the first steps in making this a reality and I'm really excited for this. These two running around town, causing trouble and solving crime is going to be so fun to watch!!

And that ending!! I was a crying mess that last few pages and my heart broke for Rose. I don't know how she will deal with such devastating news.

Another great book in this series and can't wait to see where Denise takes us on Rose's grant adventure.

Another fantastic book! I adore Rose and this book is even better than the last. Rose has grown so much from the first book in The Rose Gardener Series. It's been incredible to see each book show her growth and her strength. And this book is no exception. There's just so much in this book that I love.

5 Stars... Another wild ride with Rose and Neely Kate as they work to solve a case of a missing parrot only to stumble into the case of a missing man... Learning to negotiate the investigation business on their own in order to distance themselves from the top players in the criminal circuit, these two ladies use all their wit, knowledge and sass to uncover the truth before an all out war breaks loose... In the meantime, Rose must negotiate the struggles and pains of the heart as she and James Malcolm weigh sensibility against passion and love?... So many questions, so little time as is always the case for Rose and Neely Kate; two amateur sleuths with big hearts and loads of southern sass... Another fantastic read in this ongoing mystery series with a supernatural twist:)

I can hear the evil laugh of Denise at the end of this book. It was so many emotions that I really don't know where to start or how I feel about things. I can't write this without spoilers no matter how I write it. Levi, So cute and I really want him in the story but I never seen a spark with him and Rose. I think of him as turning into another good friend. I am so glad to see Rose and Neely Kate getting back on track. I kind of like the add to the duo( Witt). I would like to see him more. I am not saying a main player but maybe a sideline fill in. Skeeter, well wow! I have so many emotions with him. I mean finally wow, but I really don't want him to loose his bad boy image. I know he has always had a soft side and we see it from time to time but man when he is bad. I do hope Rose grows more and we see she has power and doesn't need Skeeter as much as she thinks. I feel the "under ground" world also, respects her and is going to start looking to her for help, opinions and other things she hasn't done before. Not to leave out Violet.... That story I can't wait to hear. She has come back a different person. I don't think it all has to do with being sick. Mike is a ass. I think he has got into something and Rose is going to suffer for it. We know she will do anything for family. I just hate to see what he is going to put her through. It was great to see the new Rose show up and take charge. I like the way she is going. I think she if she keeps The Lady she is going to find she has power in places she didn't know she needed. I think Rose has a bunch of stuff to figure out and I am not sure we are even close to the surface. The layers that are in this book are mind blowing. I think we are going to be on a adventure we didn't know we wanted with this series. I for one can't wait

When I pick up a Rose Gardner Book, I never know where she is going to lead us. What starts out as a simple lost bird investigation turns into something so much more.

Rose and Neely Kate are very busy girls. They have their landscaping business to attend to with Bruce Wayne. Rose still has the nursery with Violet, and on top of all that, they have decided to do a little PI work. These two work well together and with their different connections, they get answers quicker than others seeking the same thing.

Rose has a lot of sole searching in this book. She also makes up for lost time with Neely Kate. There were a few times in the book I wasn't sure what Rose was thinking, and to be honest, I am still trying to reconcile some of her actions. We get to hear from some of our favourite characters too, Joe, Maeve and even Violet is back. Miss Mildred has a part in this latest investigation, which had me giggling.

I truly adore this series, and the last one for that matter, and fall into these books with a passion. Rose is one special lady indeed.

Well that was a whole lot of excitement, some adventure whether Rose wanted it or not lol and a really amazing read.

I have been a huge Rose Gardener fan since the beginning, I hang out for the next book with such excitement, I re-read every Rose Gardener book every year, I love Joe, Neely Kate, Skeeter, Jed, Maeve, Muffy all of my favourite characters have surprised me often throughout the series and not always in a good way but I just can't stop reading...lol After Neely Kates detour in Trailer Trash I was really wondering where Denise would go with For the Birds and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised in a few ways and not surprised at all as well...lol

I really don't want to give spoilers because this is one Rose Gardener book you just have to read, I couldn't put it down it was that good and now I'm even more excited for Rose's next adventure...... Will she or Won't she :-)

Stay tuned............

No matter how much Rose knows the underworld of Fenton County is bad for her, she seems to get drawn in like a bug to a bug zapper and Neely Kate is on not to be left behind. Will she trust James with her heart? Will she date the safe Dr. Levi? Will she just give up on men all together? This book has so many answers that I really needed! You will love the emotional roller coaster DGS takes you on with "For the Birds". Don't save it for your beach trip. Take a sick day and read it!

This is book two in the exciting Rose Gardner Investigation Series. Just as Rose is busy trying to stay clear of the life of crime, Skeeter's brother, Scooter, goes missing and is feared to have been kidnapped. Will Rose help Skeeter look for his brother? And what is it about a missing parrot? Was he parrot-napped? Or was he just tired of living life in the cage? The author had me laughing and crying, happy and very sad. Still, I can't WAIT to read the next book in this series.

Series Reading Order, per author:
1. Family Jewels, ★★★★☆
2. Trailer Trash, ★★★★☆
3. For the Birds, ★★★★☆

'Talking parrot last seen on Saturday morning in Henryetta Park. Squawker loves carrots, Wheel of Fortune, and long walks in the park.' Was the owner looking to find the parrot or a date?
This is the second installment of the new Rose Gardner Investigations series and third in the reading order. It's about one week after the events in Trailer Trash, and Rose seems to be finally be warming up to the idea of officially investigating the crimes of Fenton County and she is really stepping into her role as an unaffiliated protector.

It is hard to review mysteries without getting into spoiler territory, so this review will be a bit brief. It starts with a missing parrot, but as always with Rose and Neely Kate things are much more complicated. The romantic tension with a certain King comes a bit to a head in this installment, and despite Rose still being good she is starting to see the morally grey. Only time will tell which path she winds up taking. My favorite thing about these books and the world that Swank has created is the characters - I love each and every one of them. They are complex and they feel real; they are what keeps bringing me back.

Amazing

Once you start one of Rose Gardner’s stories you can’t pit the book down until the end. This time Rose and Neely Kate must find a lost parrot, and turns out it must be related with Scooter Malcolm disappearance. Will Rose be able to save Scooter? Will she and Skeeter Malcolm be friends again? Amazing.

Denise not only creates amazing main characters but loyal readers find themselves in love with secondary and cameo characters just as much! Miss Mildred fans get some satisfaction while reading this book as everyone's favorite neighborhood watch lady takes a slightly larger role than in books past. As with all of Denise's books - developments read in books past are brought up again as the plot thickens and we get glimpses into the secrets of some of our favorite characters. Another great addition to my favorite book series!

Warning: Books about Rose Gardner are addictive...so be careful what you start. If you are a newbie...go back to the Rose Gardner Mysteries and join in the journey with Rose and her friend Nellie Kate. This book is pretty much where Denise Grover Swank leaves us...but I am waiting breathlessly for what happens next to Rose and James, with Nellie Kate and Jed and who the new vet really is. Another warning things are never what they seem in Fenton County. To really understand the characters and to enjoy the journey more to go the Denise's webpage and read the Rose Gardner Mysteries and the Nelly Kate Mysteries in order. You will understand so much more...as well as fall in love with these two ladies...by the way...in real life in 2017 a parrot did help find and convict a murderer...and no Denise did not write it after this happened...she wrote the book and then it happened - maybe she got some of Rose's vision ability. I love these books so much I have read all of them...and now doing the audio books. Do not be disappointed by the first couple of audio books. Starting with (I believe) the third book in the series a new woman does the audible and she is great!

Just WOW! I have a book hangover that is going to last awhile. As always, with any of Denise's books, I was immediately swept into the story and couldn't put it down. It was great to be back in Henryetta with my friends (cause trust me that is what they feel like). I love how Rose has grown and become more confident of herself. She is a far cry from the naive, timid girl we met in the beginning of the Rose Gardner Series. I went through all of the emotions while reading this book. Still processing things that happened. I'm anxious to find out how what happens next in her life. Waiting for the next book is always torture.

Oh my heart!

This book ended on the biggest roller coaster of emotions that I’ve ever had. It started off slow with not a lot of action, then burst to life with it. A lot is happening in these books and I cannot get enough. I know the next installment will be just as fantastic. I love though that these books have a short timeline. They’re not spread out over years. It’s more spread out over a few days to a week. I love it! It’s like a movie in my head! Onto the next!

description

Well this was again, like always really good. All the characters are still the same and just as awesome as before, of course there's a mystery to be solved, once again. I mean how can Rose and Nelly Kate go without a little detective work, it just wouldn't be them. Of course I know some people probably think I'm crazy but I'm still dreaming of the day, Rose and Joe get back together.

“This looks like a standoff—and I would know.” The voice unmistakably belonged to Joe, my best friend’s brother . I turned and saw him standing in the doorway in his sheriff’s uniform, his broad shoulders filling the space. Though I was exasperated with my nephew, Joe’s grin was contagious . “What seems to be the problem here?” he asked, walking in and closing the door behind him . “Uncle Joe,” Ashley said as she ran for him and wrapped herself around his leg. “Mikey won’t give me Mr. Bearington .” Uncle Joe. The name caught me off guard. Ashley had started calling him Uncle Joe last summer, while he and I were dating, and she’d kept it up because he’d lived next door to my sister for a while after our breakup . He leaned over and cupped her tiny shoulder with his large hand. “Let me see what I can do. I’m pretty good with negotiations.” Joe grabbed my desk chair and rolled it in front of Mikey and took a seat, making him closer to the boy’s height. “Hey, Mikey. Remember me ?” Mikey glared up at him and shook his head, clutching the bear tighter . Joe grinned. “That’s okay. It’s been a while, but you and I go way back.” Joe leaned closer and lowered his voice. “It just so happens that I know your favorite ice cream used to be strawberry. Is it still strawberry ?” Mikey’s eyes widened in surprise, and he nodded . “If you give Ashley back her bear, I’ll take you over to Dena’s cupcake shop and get you some ice cream. What do you say to that ?” “I’d say that’s bribery,” I said. “And it’s only ten in the morning .” Joe glanced up at me, his eyes twinkling. “You’re just sorry I thought of it first .”

As you can see this is why I love Joe I know crazy me, but it is a little tough, because the more time goes on the more I'm also liking Skeeter. One's on the right side of the law and one is on the other. Like I said this was good and had me hanging on all the way till the end.

Well, crap on a cracker . “Speak of the devil,”

There were so many moments I was biting my nails and shaking, and then I got to the end. Once again Denise, has ripped open my heart a bit and really got me with the ending. I just don't understand, how does she really expect me to be able to wait calmly for the next book, especially when it's not out soon enough and for a while.
Denise's book are just so good I don't think I can ever get enough. I could read and read and read her story's every day.

“We hear you, Joe,” Neely Kate said with a bright smile as she opened the door . “Oh, I know you hear me. It’s the listening part you seem to have trouble with .”

"For the Birds" (Rose Gardner Investigations book 2) by Denise Grover Swank

Let me start out by saying this book is far from being for the birds. It was interesting, engaging, fun, serious, and any adjective in between. It was not boring or a waste of time. It is a definite must read in this new series.

Violet is back; Neely Kate has reviewed some things from her quick trip she took to address her past (see Trailer Trash: Neely Kate Mystery #1); Rose and James have some conflicts and issues to work through, but are talking; the plot is Wow!! You will never guess the issues which come to light and how the novel ends.

While the beginning was slightly slow, it picked up quickly after a couple chapters and then I read straight through. There is so much happening, yet the author has everything laid out so well in her writing, the reader never gets lost. The additional characters introduced to the reader are well written and added to the novel.

Rose wants peace in Fenton county within the underworld and does what she can to remain neutral and make that her goal. Yet, sometimes our goals are hard to achieve or they only last a short amount of time. With all the gossip going around, it is hard for her even to attempt that goal. She is aware she is an ongoing target and that she is not safe. She is also aware that some have the wrong impression about her relationship with Skeeter, Jed, etc. Thanks to her there are some power changes, resulting in peace. How long they will last, no one knows.

Aside from the landscaping business, both Rose and Neely Kate decide to take on a mission to find a parrot. That leads to something much larger, seedier and underhanded, as well as a larger investigation by the two. Now if only Neely Kate will stop using the name Sparkle Investigations. It is hard enough she has a pink sparkly pen.

Both Rose and Neely Kate have some decisions to make and a lot of honest catching up to do. They both have some life issues arising which will result in changes and conflict personally and potentially via the business.

A great addition to this series and a twisting turning plot will keep the reader enthralled.

If you love a great mystery, strong characters (especially female ones), and looking for your next read, "For the Birds" is definitely a pick up now novel.

For fans of Rose, Neely Kate and others, there will be several months before the next release in this and Neely Kate's spin off. February 13, 2018...so hang on, re-read and some great things are yet to come.

Denise Grover Swank hit For the Birds out of the park! I could not put my Kindle down. In fact, the ONLY reason I stopped reading was because I was running through airports. When one reads a Rose Gardner book, you go in expecting her to end up in some sort of chaos. This installment is no exception. It's a fast-paced read, complete with a talkative bird, Mrs Mildred being her "charming" self, and bad guys out for blood. Altogether this is otherwise known as a regular day in the fictitious world of Henryetta and Fenton!

What IS exceptional is how Rose handles herself. She has grown more than I would have imagined early on in the "mystery" series of books. I know I've said this a lot before, and it still rings true now: watching her journey is so much fun! Of course she ends up in the craziest of situations; it wouldn't be a Rose Gardner book otherwise!

I enjoyed the evolution of her relationship with a certain King of the Fenton County criminal underworld. With that being said... IF their relationship evolves further, I don't really see it lasting. Or maybe they're enough to balance each other out? I don't know. Levi has been a little too flat and eager for me to truly like him... so much that I wonder if he has ulterior motives?! I've got trust issues...

It goes without saying that Neely Kate is the best friend that Rose could have ever hoped for. Their relationship as BFFs grows more with each book (read Trailer Trash if you haven't already!) I also loved seeing even more of Jed. With each book he becomes more than just the bodyguard. He and Neely Kate are magnificent together. Jed and Skeeter definitely have some of their own relationship issues to deal with after this book. Joe has been relegated to background character status, but that's okay because he's always there... the growth of his character is truly evident even with his lesser "book" presence. A pleasant surprise was getting to see Violet again too! She and Rose certainly have a long way to go, but I'm sure they'll work out their differences.

I cannot recommend For the Birds enough! This entire book is mostly about relationships, knowing who to trust, and figuring out how to trust yourself. It's fun and packs a few punches when you least expect it. *****FIVE STARS*****

I adore Rose Gardner and Neely Kate, and the latest release, For the Birds, is a rip-roaring read.
Rose and Neely Kate have been keeping secrets from each other, but they join together to become PI's. They start by looking for a lost parrot, but when Joe reveals that Scooter (James/Skeeter's brother) is missing, they start to delve into his disappearance. And as usual, they get deeply involved.
Rose's love life gets complicated when she is not only dating new vet, Levi, but also gets closer to James.
Their scenes are hot, and although I hadn't taken to Skeeter previously, I felt the attraction between them. I never felt it between Rose and Mason. They were so unsuited. Although I can't help feeling that Roses' heart will be broken again. James is head of Fenton County criminal underworld, and he told Rose that he's not going to change. Rose only gets involved in situations to do good for the county, so I don't see a happy ending for them. But it is good to see Rose develop and mature. She has changed so much since twenty-eight and a half. And I'm pleased that Joe is still around. He is her constant, and they both want to do good for the county. Rose has a life to live, and she's making up for lost time, but I hope she ends up back with Joe. He was her first love, and I hope he's her last. With no more JR, there's nothing stopping them.
I love Jed, and he has been there for Rose, and now Neely Kate. Hopefully, James will mend the fissure in their friendship.
Violet is back...but the prognosis is not good. And I'm concerned about what Mike is up to...
I can't wait for the next instalment!!

I received an ARC for an honest opinion.

When a new Rose Gardner Mystery book is released I'm like a kid in a candy store. It is just so great to be back in the mix of the world of Rose and Neely Kate. "For the Birds" delivers a special one, two punch since we get to read about Rose's attempt to move forward with her life without Skeeter and Neely Kate's budding relationship with Jed.

This time Neely Kate want to move forward with plans to become P.It's so they take on a case to find a missing Amazonian parrot. Meanwhile, Rose's sister, Violet is home from the cancer center in Texas and she is quite thin and drawn. Rose also decides to accept another date with the new town vet and Joe is dating again.

Rose discovers that Skeeter, aka James is looking for his kidnap brother. She is Burt that he didn't call her but she is inadvertently sucked into the hunt when she is kidnapped by one of Skeeter's enemies. Taking on her role as "Lady" once again, Rose gets right in the mix of things all while trying g to keep her distance from Skeeter.

Things get messy when Skeeter final gives into his feelings for Rose. The question is is it enough to make a go of it. There is so much going on in this little gem of a read. Most of it was extremely exciting, intriguing, and sexy as hell; but there was an extremely sad moment at the end as well. My only problem is now I have to wait to read more about Rose and her exploits. This is a no brained. This series rocks!

Finding the missing and helping to keep the peace

I love following along with Rose as she once again unsuccessfully tries to live her life drama free. Despite their attempts to not be, Rose and Neely Kate are always smack dab in the middle of mystery, small town life, hilarious messes, dangerous moments, and love life drama. Rose is a woman living in a nosy closed minded small southern town. She is good hearted to a fault and experiences visions that she’s compelled to share with the person she has them of. Rose and her best friend and business partner, Neely Kate, agree to apprentice with a local PI, Kermit, so they can become PIs in two years. Their first case is finding a missing parrot. But James’ brother, Scooter, is also missing and soon Rose and Neely Kate are up to their necks in small town gossip, shenanigans, murder, and underworld machinations. In order to keep everyone she loves safe, Rose is going to have to use all her skills to find the parrot and Scooter. James, Jed, Merv, Miss Mildred, and Violet are major secondary characters as the drama unfolds. The book was well written and included witty dialogue, three dimensional characters, and an captivating storyline with sweet moments, exciting action, danger, family drama, painful pasts, mystery, plot twists, imperfect characters, missteps, and all the big feels. I am looking forward to reading what happens next in Rose’s life.

There have been several authors who have taught me the lesson that I don't have to like the changes they make or agree with them, but give them a chance and you just might see why they felt those changes were necessary to make a series better. I have read the Rose Gardner books from the beginning and I loved each and every one of them. So when Denise Grover Swank announced the series was kind of ending and becoming something new, I resisted. Honestly, I don't like change.

Well, I have to say that the new series and especially For the Birds is above and beyond any of the previous books. They are emotional, complex, suspenseful, romantic and funny, all wrapped up with the characters we have all come to know and love throughout the original series.

I was pretty strong about being #TeamMason but now I'm like "Mason who?" I'm #TeamSkeeter all the way now. For the Birds is a page-turner, exciting, emotional and action-packed. I laughed and I cried. I cried a lot. I'm loving the way Rose is evolving into a strong, smart, self-confident and self-sufficient woman. She's a model character!

I can't believe the next book doesn't come out until February!!!!
