The myth of natural talent
People often lament on ‘natural talent,’ and how they don’t have it so why should they bother. It’s a complaint that’s only half true. Yes, having natural talent like Ed Sheeran does make life that little bit easier; but that’s not the be-all end-all. In actual fact, having natural talent counts for very little in life if you don’t work at and build upon it. And this goes the other way too. If you don’t have any talent, but apply self-discipline then you can still learn and eventually be great. Sure it will be harder, but it is still doable; there’s nothing in life that can’t be achieved if you want it bad enough. At the end of the day the only person you have to blame for not being where you want is you.
Here’s the truth. Anyone can be as successful as Ed Sheeran, they just need to make one simple, life changing adjustment. That adjustment is of course the act of being more self-disciplined.
The magic of self-discipline
It’s almost divine the way that self-discipline can positively affect a person’s life. The simple act of being more organised or setting goals and seeing them through to the end can dramatically improve your life for the better.
Now, don’t go reading the above example about Ed Sheeran and think that self-discipline only applies to those seeking fame and fortune either. No, it can literally be applied to every aspect of your life. I want you to start seeing self-discipline as a kind of gateway. Behind the gateway are your goals and desires. It might be a promotion at work, or that new diet that you can’t stick to. Up until now it’s been closed and locked up tight. And because of that you assumed that there was no way through, that being self-disciplined was for other, more dedicated people. But I’m here to tell you that that’s not the case.
One little secret that most people don’t tell you is that self-discipline is actually addictive. Once you start making small changes to your life, you’ll feel the desire to start building on these changes, constantly striving to see just how much of a better you, you can create. The simple act of running twice a week will see you change your diet so that you can run faster. It will see you wake up earlier so you can run further. And it will see you bursting with new found energy that you have no choice but to now apply to new, once thought impossible goals. Starting is hard, I’m not going to argue against that. But believe it or not, stopping is even harder.
