A Gentleman in Moscow is a novel written by Amor Towles. The novel’s plot is set in the beginning of the 20th century Russian Empire and follows the story of Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov and his life in the Hotel Metropol where he has been under house arrest for thirty-two years.
The 20th century was one of the most turbulent times in the history of Europe. Old political systems were deemed obsolete. People wanted change; they wanted rights for all, not just for the wealthy. In the Russian Empire ‘old and new’ clashed in blood, violence, and death. During the 20th century, being noble was not very popular in Russia. Communists slowly but surely gained more and more trust from the people. Since their agenda blamed several groups of people for every misfortune that happened, being a count became very dangerous.
Alexander Ilyich Rostov knows this. He almost gets killed but is saved at the last moment in the most peculiar way.
An interesting novel, filled with historical segments, A Gentleman in Moscow is more than just a story of one man. It is a story of survival and uncertainty in dire times.

I liked this novel very much. Unfortunately my librarian thought I might enjoy "reading" it by listening to the whole novel on CDs. I discover I simply don't enjoy and retain as well by listening as I do by reading, and it's impossible to go back to a spot I need to reread. I did find the characters interesting, and a whole world in a hotel! Count Rostov is banished to live out his life in what was the poshest hotel in Moscow. (When I was there we stayed in a section of a brand new hotel that wasn't yet finished. We were really close to Red Square.) Nina and her daughter Sophia are the most interesting to me, and the actress,Anna. But whatever you do, read it, don't listen to it. As in most novels about Russia there is an enormous cast.
Count Rostov is an enlightened and charming man who masters his circumstances, helped somewhat by his secret stash of gold pieces. His observations on human nature are timeless and universal. Is there any revolution which has not, in the end, turned on its own people, or egalitarian movement which has not slowly adopted some form of privilege?
My only reservation with this story is the almost non-appearance of the Second World War, a devastating and traumatic experience for Russia and Moscow.
IN 1922, 30 YEAR OLD COUNT ROSTOV IS SENTENCED TO HOUSE ARREST IN METROPOL HOTEL ACROSS FROM THE KREMLIN. HE LIVES IN AN ATTIC ROOM WHILE SOME OF THE MOST TRUMULTUOUS DECADES IN RUSSIAN HISTORY ARE UNFOLDING OUTSIDE THE HOTEL'S DOORS. HE DICOVERS FRIENDSHIPS, AND FATE PUTS THE LIFE OF A YOUNG GIRL IN HIS HANDS.
