Adventure. Danger. Excitement.

Those were not words PAVAD Internal Affairs Supervisor Kyra Dillon wanted to hear in conjunction with her life ever again. She’d had enough adventure in her life lately—and had the bullet scar on her temple to prove it.

But she’d go through all that hell again if it meant never returning to her hometown—Value, Texas. Population 897.

Agent Camden Lake, with PAVAD’s Runaway & Endangered Youth unit, was used to going non-stop from one case to another. Danger and adventure were all that kept him from remembering the little sister he hadn’t been able to keep safe.

She was Barratt County’s only open missing child case to this day.
Cam had spent most of the twenty years since protecting those who needed it. It was why he’d joined the FBI in the first place. Why he’d taken the PAVAD assignment and left his Texas home behind.

The FBI conference brought him back to his hometown and his
family.

Until Dr. Kyra Dillon sent up a distress signal.

From only fifty miles away.

Cam was a protector and Kyra needed protected. It was as simple as that for him.

But something about the woman’s quiet confidence and manner got under Cam’s skin until there wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do to keep her safe.

They kept running…until they were embroiled in the hunt for the truth and what little Value, Texas was HIDING.

Who is Calle Jaye Brookes?

Calle Jaye is fun, playful, ironic, professional and sophisticated. She’s super-educated in the field of fiction and would spend most of her time walking around in “Book World” (or”eBook World”).

Does she have slight control freak tendencies? Yep. Why else would she chose to self-publish?

In her day job she gets to read romance novels. In her night job she gets to write them!

Her favorite color is bold purple. She likes rock like Kid Rock, Shinedown, and Nickelback. Add in a bit of Anastacia and Adelle, too.

She collects rocks. Watches crime dramas. Abhors Lifetime Movies and Titanic (especially Leo…) and refuses to read or write about sparkly teen vampires.

She’s married to a cop she strongly suspects is a vampire. They’ve made vampire babies, too.

They live in Indiana with their vampire relatives and their vampire dogs.

So many things about this book drove me insane, and I had trouble finishing. Cam is the only bright spot (though his class clown persona is told and not shown). Kyra is kind of a nothing main character, and there were several plot holes at the end I just can't get past:

1. Krya and Bailey somehow get out of the cavern on their own (which was supposed to be impossible), beg to be let go, are told no, and instead of overpowering the ONE MAN left up there, end up back in the cave. In what universe is a trained federal agent going to do that? Absurb.
2. Krya discovers this great treasure, and nothing is ever said about it. (The epilogue isn't one--it's another chapter immediately following the same events. No indications are given about what happens to this massive discovery, and even in subsequent books it is ignored. For being such a key plot piece, that was bizarre.)
3. The pacing was also terrible--nothing happens for the majority of the book, and then everything happens in the final quarter.
4. Speaking of pacing--Cam's twin. Number one, I don't understand how she doesn't know her family is alive. This book is set in the era of the internet. A simple search should've taken care of everything, especially with her family and her disappearance having the notoriety it did. That she could exist so close to home and have no idea her family was alive just made no sense to me. Second, Cam has been searching for his twin for decades, and over multiple books in this series. The twin is hinted at in the beginning of this book, and then no developments occur, and she just appears at the end. For a multi-book storyline, this was developed very poorly here. Cam essentially gets a paragraph of resolution at the very end of this book, and in subsequent ones, it's never addressed at all.

Honestly, I'm not sure why I bothered with this one. If I could give it zero stars, I would. I think I only bothered finishing because I've read every other book in this series.

AND--these books are riddled with typos, grammatical errors, and terrible repetitions. I've noticed this starting with "Ghosting", and it's been driving me crazy. Simple noun-verb agreements, sentences without subjects etc. just kill me. The errors are so bad that I had to go back and re-read sentences to understand what was going on. I won't add this for every one, but it's been present. I don't remember it being as bad in the early ones--maybe it was and I just missed it. In any event, these books need an editor desperately (though I'd argue that a lot of these the author should've caught herself).

I'm pretty vocal about enjoying law enforcement novels a lot so it isn't a surprise that I really enjoyed this. Cam was different than what I usually like in a person (a little more flirty than I'm comfortable with) but I didn't mind him at all. It was refreshing to see a funny and charming and almost laid back male protagonist in a book. That's not to say he wasn't a neanderthal too, he was just subtle about it. It gave me kinda Marcus (from Dark Instincts) vibes and y'all know he is one of my absolute fav characters so,,,,,,,,,,

ANYWAY the book was really good. The beginning had soooooo many details it was pretty hard to keep up, but I think it comes with the territory of reading a book which 1. Is a sequel, and 2. Is one of the books towards the end of the series. I'm pretty sure I won't be overwhelmed when (or if) I come to reread this after I read all other PAVAD books preceding this. I enjoyed the other characters a lottt and I can't wait to read more about them. Even the plot for this was really good. I didn't get confused at all about what was happening (just a tad bit overwhelmed) and it's nice when I can figure what's happening without reading something twice. And also, a big round of applause for there not being a love triangle/quadrilateral/whatever in this book!! Even though the temptation was RIGHT THERE. With Micah, and with Clay also to a certain extent. There were so many men in love with her but she didn't give any of them any ounce of misplaced hope and I'm so happy about it. I felt a little bad for Micah through most of this book, but I also realise it was by his own design that he was this miserable. Do. Not. Try. To. Curb. Your. Partner's. Ambition. Please, for god's sakes. Don't fucking do it.

Before we end this weird and disjointed review, I would like to add something. I can't help but be a little disappointed by the ending. The epilogue wasn't an epilogue, it was just another chapter. I longed for some sort of closure and I felt like there wasn't any? It was still a great book. It's just I expected something more in the end. You'll get what I mean when you read it. I was super shocked when the book just....ended and went back to double check because I was THAT taken aback. Still enjoyed it though!!

Cam and Kyra - darlings....

Calle has done it again and blown this story right out of the water. Cam works for PAVAD REY because of his sister who disappeared twenty years ago and Kyra works as IA after her father as Sheriff of Value, was incarcerated with other fellow TSP officers. They are both unlikely matches as a couple, but as events unfold and they run for their lives, they grow closer until they are each other's worlds! Just beautifully written and love how Calle ties everything together:) Wonderful read but keep those tissues handy. Look forward to more PAVAD and the Finley Creek Series!!!!

This was an easy, enjoyable read. I liked our main characters and the plot. I will admit, since I've only read a couple of the previous books in this series, it could be hard to keep track of all the characters we had thrown at us. Although, I feel that even if I was fully up-to-date with all the books, it would still be difficult to recognise all the characters. On a similar note, the multiple POVs were a tad concerning. I didn't hate it, it was just a bit much at times. Despite this, I still had a wholly good time with this. Love you Cam, you're my boo bear xx

Oh! Side note but I really wish this had a better ending. The epilogue felt more like a last chapter and their should have been an epilogue after that one. I'm not convinced that this author understands what an epilogue is/should be.

...

I really enjoyed the book. The descriptions of the small town and the people's connections to one another makes it more interesting. The suspense and romance added to the story. I did find the grammatical mistakes rather irritating and think they should be corrected before publishing...I have noticed this in other books of the series....

Kyra and Cam seem to be pretty shallow characters as they relate to each other. The protagonists take a very superficial look at each other as noted “how strong he felt beneath his shirt, or how hot his hand felt wrapped around hers”. She is a strong female, yet lets herself be a submissive woman to him. He feels the need to be Galahad and protect her. The other males seem to be even worse as they imagine things which would "make a sailor blush".

The author does introduce characters with lots of faults. This accomplishes the task of confusing the reader as to whom the bad guys really are. Of course everyone seems to be related, by blood or marriage, to almost everyone else. Hard to keep track of.

Eventually the suspense and action kicks in, but the story seems to almost be over at that point. The author has built other clues into the story to push the reader to the follow-up stories.

Don't know exactly why

But this book didn't hit me as magical, as Calle's past books. I'm not saying it was bad, or that I had a hard time finishing it. No! Absolutely not! Just use to her books having a little more depth, in the mystery. I was surprised by a couple of the culprits. I'm out of Calle's books for now, until I find another sale. Now I'm sad. Lol. Please consider putting at least some, of your books, in Kindle Unlimited!! I do highly recommend all of Calls Brookes books!!!

Another Great

The stories in this series and some of the others keep you on your toes and want to know what happens to each of them. Kyra is still dealing with all of her last incident that she was involved in. This one has her past family problem needing to be fixed. But then there is Cam the jokester of a different division but from a little town close to Kyra's. But one good thing going is they take care of each other.

Double Wow!

This has to be one of the best PAVAD books so far. It kept me on the edge of my seat and routing for the good guys. Buried treasure long lost in history, was the main goal of the bad guys. But they left a trail of dead and injured behind them. There is one little (?) surprise at the end that nobody was expecting, but it helped the ending go off with a big bang. Great story! I can hardly wait for the next one!

One of the best!!

This was the best one yet! I think I said that 3 books ago!! It is always satisfying when you see characters from other books. It is like old home week! I have to say this was a wee bit more vicious than the rest, but good triumphs over evil. This was a well organized and well written story that will keep you on the edge of your seat!

I so wanted to like this book. But after about an hour's reading I realized I detested all of the characters, especially the heroine. I did like Cam, but he was the only one who had potential. For me to enjoy spending several hours with a group of characters, I have to like them. I did give it 2 stars because the writing itself was clean and well edited.

Hiding was great

I've read some of Calle J. Brooks and when I saw this one, I just got it and read it in 2 days. It has some familiar PAVID characters, lots of action, several life and death crimes, and great suprises.

A little disappointed with this one there were too many threads left loose and too many grammatical errors. Sentences without subjects occurred the whole way through, but, at about 3/4 of the way through, it was as though any editing was stopped.
