Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.

Jeff Brown had worked in Hollywood and as an editor and writer in New York before creating Flat Stanley, a hero for the youngest readers whose adventures, with illustrations by Tomi Ungerer, were first published in 1964. Flat Stanley became the star of a series of perpetually popular books. The last, "Stanley, Flat Again!," was published the year he died. All together, Stanley's tales have sold nearly a million copies in the United States alone. The character's life extended further, as schoolchildren mailed cut-outs of him to their friends. In translation, he traveled to France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Japan and Israel, among other places.

Jeff Brown was born Richard Chester Brown. Originally a child actor, he became Jeff Brown because Actors Equity already had a Richard Brown as a member. A graduate of the Professional Children's School, he provided a child's voice in a radio drama and appeared onstage.

In Hollywood he worked for the producer Samuel Goldwyn Jr. and was a story consultant at Paramount. Preferring to write himself, he sold fiction and articles to national magazines while working at The New Yorker, Life, The Saturday Evening Post, Esquire and finally at Warner Books, where he was a senior editor until 1980. The idea for Stanley came to him one night at bedtime when his sons J. C. and Tony were young and stalling for time. One asked what would happen if the big bulletin board on the wall were to fall on J. C., and Mr. Brown said he would most likely wake up flat. That led to speculation about what such a life might be like. After writing "Flat Stanley, " Mr. Brown went on to "Stanley and the Magic Lamp," "Stanley in Space," "Stanley's Christmas Adventure," "Invisible Stanley" and finally "Stanley, Flat Again!"

The Flat Stanley Project was started in 1995 by Dale Hubert, a third grade schoolteacher in London, Ontario, Canada. It is meant to facilitate letter-writing by schoolchildren to each other as they document where Flat Stanley has gone with them. The Project provides an opportunity for students to make connections with students of other member schools who've signed up with the project. Students begin by reading the book and becoming acquainted with the story. Then they make paper "Flat Stanleys" (or pictures of the Stanley Lambchop character) and keep a journal for a few days, documenting the places and activities in which Flat Stanley is involved. The Flat Stanley and the journal are mailed to other people who are asked to treat the figure as a visiting guest and add to his journal, then return them both after a period of time. In 2005, more than 6,500 classes from 48 countries took part in the Flat Stanley Project.

وقتی که نُه ساله بودم (یعنی هشت سال پیش) ماجراهای استنلی را که شش جلد بود در قالب یک کتاب خواندم. این جلد از ماجراجویی های استنلی جذاب ترین بخش بود برایم.

What a wonderful surprise LFL find. I love stories about wishes & consequences, and this is one of the best for modern children who are casual readers. I particularly liked the two bits of special kindness at the end.

Y'know what, I'm going to start a Listopia on the theme of Wishes and Consequences. Join me there if you know any other titles... I'm sure there are ones that I've forgotten, and perhaps ones that I've missed altogether.

Hidup bersamamu. Menua, disisimu.
Iya. Mungkin itu yang akan aku minta.

Tapi bagaimana jika suatu hari mantranya memudar?

Padamu, aku rindu.

*update satu jam kemudian*

As You Turn Away berulang-ulang.

I'll give this a 3.5 as a combo rating - 3 for me and 4 for my kids. They thought it was fun. We read it together over about a week's time. They enjoyed it. I thought it was cute. There was a good message in it and some fun antics, plus now my kids want a liophant. LOL Anyway, fun fast read as an easy chapter book for mid elementary age readers or as a family read-together book.

This was just an ok book for me, but my son loved the idea of a genie granting wishes. I liked how it explained that sometimes wishes backfire and the book requires children to think about the downfalls of a particular wish like being the strongest man alive, famous, etc.

When I was in primary school the teacher read Flat Stanley to us, and I remember thinking it was brilliant. I got my own copy of the next book, which has been in my treasured childhood books since. Haven't re read it until now and we have been reading it aloud at bedtime. It's all right but that's all.

Usual tale of a genie in a lamp granting wishes, and even when the wishes come out just right, all those mega skills and things aren't what people hoped they would be and at the end of the day folk just want to go back to being normal.

This was an easy read, I did find it a little weird that the series is called "Flat Stanley" when he is not flat at all in this book.
It's good for knowing story structure, but it is still a little weird. I suppose the parents are a little more parental in this book than the last.

This is the second book in the Flat Stanley series by Jeff Brown. We've heard a lot about Flat Stanley and have participated in a few school projects for both our girls and our niece, taking a "Flat Stanley" to places and photographing him against popular landmarks. So we thought we should check out the books in this series and so far we've liked the stories.

This was an interesting look at what would happen if our wishes came true. It's also a good story to explain why you should be careful what you wish for. The narrative is entertaining and the illustrations are interesting, even if the characters don't match the image we have for Stanley. Our girls really loved the liophant and we enjoyed reading this story together.

Stanley discovers a genie in a lamp, with delightfully whimsical results: he gets a half-lion half-elephant pet called a Liophant; he flies, and Arthur gets super strength, and they foil a robbery; his mother becomes famous and his father magically good at tennis. Of course, it all gets too much for the Lambchops, especially Stanley’s mother, and everything is reversed in the end. It’s another fun story; I think some of Brown’s constructions and word choices are too complicated for kindergarteners to follow, but my class liked it even better than Flat Stanley.

I loved the idea of an "askit basket." Kind of like a portable, magical librarian.

Stanley and the Magic Lamp by Jeff Brown is filled with punchlines and humor. The book starts with a boy named, Stanley, who recently recovered from being flat. Stanley, finds a “pot” washed up on the shore of the ocean. At home, he sees it’s a little dirty and rubs the dirt off by using his shirt. As Stanley stroked the pot, smoke appeared, and a genie pops out! The genie says that he can grant Stanley wishes, so Stanley's first instinct was to try to think of a request. He first thought of asking for a Liophant (lion/elephant), and his wish was granted! Stanley and his family began to wish for more! Although wishes were given, prices had to be paid. You'll have to find out what happens by reading Stanley and the Magic Lamp! The second book in this series is a spectacular and fun book. I recommend Flat Stanley to people who like adventure and mythical beings!

Stanley returns but this time while on a day out Stanley comes a cross a lamp buried in the sand. When he finds it he decides to take it home as a present for his mother. When Stanley goes to clean it out comes a genie. At first Stanley uses it for simple things like for help with his homework. But when everyone's begins wishing for everything they want or what they want to change in their lives they realise everything they wanted doesn't turn out to be so great after all. This is a great book for children as it shows them they don't need everything in life to be happy. As they say "be careful what you wish for". Again the writing was simple and easy to understand. The story flowed along nicely. Overall I loved it and will be moving onto the next book very soon.

I read this story with my six-year-old after reading several other books in the Flat Stanley series. My daughter liked to imagine all the things she would wish for if she were to discover a genie and she especially loved the chapter where Stanley and his brother, Arthur, get to fly. This is another book where Stanley once being flat doesn't really seem to have much relevance. It follows a similar flow to other chapter books in the series where each chapter is like its own vignette. The story is relatively easy to follow and has a lesson in being careful what you wish for.

“I’m Mighty Stanley!” he called. “Defender of the Innocent!”

Stanley and his brother Arthur learn a lot of valuable lessons from a genie in a lamp, not the least of which is be careful what you wish for.

Originally written in 1983, aspects of our world might have changed, but the lessons in this story are not just relevant, as Mrs. Lambchop yearns to be famous — then discovers the perils of fame, the story proves timeless as well.

Looks like there are quite a few books in the series, this was the first one that I picked up randomly at the library. There's plenty in it for kids to enjoy from wishing for a Leophant (lion-elephant), to a magical solution to homework, to being flying superheroes and foiling robbers. Miss 3 listened to all of it but wasn't too fussed so we probably won't look for the others in the series.

The story is truly adventurous and humorous. I love the simplicity of the wording used. It's easy to read for anyone whose mother tongue isn't English. But most of all, I love how the author emphasized the importance of family and that it's ok for one to just be ordinary. Being famous has its own ups and downs.

A cute adventure for Flat Stanley and his family when he accidentally plans to give his mother a magic lamp for her birthday but decides to try and shine it first. Pretty predictable ending, and I'll never get over how much their parents don't listen or take anything seriously, but I think kids in the target age range will have a good time with this one.

The book started out really cute, with flat Stanley who is no longer flat finding a magic lamp that he runs and a genie appears. They wish for all sorts of silly things like a lionphant and to be famous. I didn’t love it because there was one “swear” and the characters were rude. They also made a point of asking Mrs. Lampchop inappropriate comments when she was famous.

I was pleasantly surprised that all of these books weren't just about adventures of Stanley being flat, but a whole new adventure. Not bad, still a good way to introduce a young child to chapter books, but not much substance.

My son and I enjoyed reading this book! We always love books about Stanley. It was cute and had some good messages. It was interesting to me that Stanley is continuing to be normal. I thought he might be going back to being flat in this book.

Stanley finds a “teapot” that he plans to give to his mother, but when he begins to polish it up, a genie appears! It wasn’t a teapot, but a magic lamp!

Stanley makes some fun wishes for he and his family. But are wishes coming true always what we want? Sometimes they have consequences!
