First born, Gaian is the son of the king and a goddess. His more-than-human strength seems a poor exchange for the support of a flesh-and-blood mother as he struggles to be worthy of Becoming a god himself. Or just struggles to rise above the machinations of the queen.
A single day younger, Benar is the son of the king and queen. Like his mother, he refuses to believe the story of Gaian’s birth. He struggles to fulfill his mother’s wishes by proving himself to be his father’s true heir. But frustration and guile prove to be poor weapons against Gaian’s unnatural strength.
Until a coming-of-age trial forces them either to cooperate—and become brothers in truth—or else one of them may not survive the trial.
Professionally, I've been a financial analyst and a visual basic programmer. I also have a paralegal certificate, although I've never worked in that field. It's anybody's guess what I'll be when I grow up.
Imagining stories and writing have always been an important part of my life. It's one I've finally gotten to spend a significant amount of time on while I care for my mother who has Alzheimer's disease.

MY TAKE I've been a fan of Mansfield's books for a while now. She's such a solid writer, and the worlds she creates with the Goddess as the religious icon provide a fun twist. Gaian is a cute kid. In many ways, he's the epitome of the first born child, striving so hard to please his family. But he's so alone too. His father is busy with his responsibilities and, unlike Gaian's siblings who have mothers to fill the gap, Gaian doesn't. My heart broke for him.
Benar is the perfect punk bully kid, being manipulated by his jealous and power-hungry mother. The story has a satisfying conclusion as both boys learn a lot about themselves.
A nice short story of two brothers who learn to work together. They have to overcome one mother who is the antagonist for the story while they king tries to pull the two young men into their future.
