Evan is new to Edgartown. Just having lost his twin brother along with his voice; he doesn't know how to start over and live this life without the one person that's been there through everything. Abusive and neglectful parents to years fighting side by side as Marines..... Now he's alone, a new town, some new friends and...a new puppy? So many new things, how will he adapt to a new guy as well?
Jury is content with his life at his dad's construction company, working hard and spending time with his hearing-impaired brother, Caleb. A trip to the animal shelter to find Caleb a service dog has his running into (literally), silent and sad, Evan. He know's he's attracted to him at first glance, but the muscled looking Marine doesn't speak to him after nearly knocking him on his butt, so, why did his friend invite him to tag along on a night out? And why did he really want to go?
Hot guys, heavy problems, great friends, and a little puppy. What more could you want? A guaranteed HEA and never any cliffy's.... Graphic language and adult situations. Enjoy :)
Jenny Wood- Stay at home mom with two amazing kids and the most supportive, ridiculously good looking, husband. :P My love of writing comes from my love of reading and I count myself incredibly lucky to live in a place where I can do what I love and hopefully, make some people happy while I do it.
Since Evan was introduced into this series I've had such a soft spot for him. I couldn't wait for his story. I knew it was going to be sad, and it was. It was also a story of healing and learning to go on when you're not sure you can. The only thing I didn't like is when Jury was suffering thinking they were through, I wish Evan would've been moving mountains to find him and make things right. I guess in his mind though he knew things weren't over and they'd be ok. He just didn't realize how bad Jury would be suffering. I love all of these guys in this series and can't wait to read more. So looking forward to Kash and Dax.
Re-read Feb. 23, 2021 *** We have another Unlikely Hero winner here. *** A tale of two men who are perfect for one another. Evan has come back to his hometown after 9 years in the Marines. He and his twin brother, Gavin enlisted to get away from an abusive father. They were a team, but even more so. Gavin was the spotter and Evan the sniper. On a mission gone wrong, Evan 26, lost his brother, his other half. They were always by each other's side. Evan lost his voice and his therapist suggested a service dog. While at the pound, he finds his cute gray, French Bulldog, Max. But he also meets Jury and Caleb, while they are picking out a service dog for deaf Caleb. Jury leads a construction crew, and sees muscled, tattooed Evan, and they each seem to like the other. Hot, romantic and sexy times are wonderful. Evan begins whispering and using his rough voice. His service record has been noticed by the local police, who need a "watcher," a sniper who will cover the cops during sting operations of hostage rescue. The beautiful story will make you happy and excited. There's action, acceptance, and deep emotions. I highly recommend this. ENJOY !
While Jenny Wood writes great hurt/comfort, this one felt a bit meh to me.
I had a really hard time suspending my belief with two things here. I know it’s fiction, but sometimes I just can’t.
- I had a hard time believing the police would ask a former Marine (with PTSD) to step in and help find some kidnapped girls. And how did they even find Evan? - There is a waiting list for a service dog, you don’t just go out and get one.
And why didn’t Evan ever tell Jury the brother he lost was his identical twin? It was weird when even at the end Jury didn’t know this. I would say that was kind of an important part of the story and might explain better why Evan felt like he lost half of his soul.
There were of course a lot of spelling mistakes and commas were just thrown in at random, but I’m used to that by now from Jenny Wood, so that was nothing new. I did have a hard time with the fact that she started the book with ‘Epilogue’ when she obviously meant ‘Prologue’… *cringes* For the life of me I can’t think of a reason why this woman doesn’t use a proofreader or an editor.
Still, there is something about these books that I like. It had lovely hurt/comfort and I do like those parts. I’m not sure this particular series if for me anymore though. I feel like I’ve read it all.
But if you’re looking for some hurt/comfort stories, you should definitely check out Jenny Wood’s work.
I have really liked this series and was looking forward to Evan's story. It might not be my favorite but it was still a good addition. Evan's story was truly heartbreaking in the beginning. He really needed someone to help him find his place again and then he met sweet Jury. He was there for him. But, I was a little miffed at Evan for not trying harder to get up with Jury though and letting him go so long thinking they were over. Then things were wrapped up and forgiven a little too quickly. But overall I enjoyed it.
The Edgartown men are back, pulling at my heart-strings and making me deliriously happy with their sentimental romances. It’s all tears and sappy smiles for me.
When Evan and his twin brother, Gavin, come of age, they high-tailed it out of their toxic and abusive home and enlist in the US Marine Corps. For nine years they work together in perfect sync, specialising in hostage rescue and saving countless lives, while also dreaming of a future post-military, in which they both dream of settling down in a life back stateside that is far removed from the one they suffered growing up.
Sadly, all their dreams come crashing down when Evan loses his brother in a mission gone awry. His entire world is shattered and he suffers a major mental and emotional breakdown, screaming himself raw to the point he damages his vocal cords and stops speaking altogether.
When this story kicks into gear it is five months on and Evan has just moved out of the Edgartown transitional house, where he was treated for PTSD (among other things) and was befriended by many of the former characters from the series. Evan still doesn’t speak, choosing to communicate with his new friends via text, but he’s trying to build a new life for himself because he knows that’s what his brother would have wanted.
One step in this moving-on process sees Evan getting a service dog, not only to help with his anxiety and night-terrors, but for general companionship in his new home. While at the pound he literally runs into Jury, a kind and sweet man, who captures Evan’s immediate attention and interest. Once Evan works up the courage to invite Jury and his kid brother to his friends’ upcoming BBQ, their relationship slowly develops and blossoms into something meaningful and necessary for the both of them.
I really enjoyed this installment. I adored Evan. His emotional struggles broke my heart and had me desperately rooting for his much deserved happiness. Jury was a sweet man and a perfect match for Evan. I loved how effortlessly the now big group of friends in this series just took Jury into the fold and supported both him and Evan without a second thought.
I continue to have some fairly major issues with the writing quality of this series, with words missing, words displaced, punctuation appearing willy-nilly where it has no right to be, and even the odd occurrence of misused character names. All of this (and more) distracts from my overall enjoyment and sadly brings down my general ratings. With a good proofread, these problems could be nipped in the bud and any qualms I have would fly straight out the window. Luckily, I’m able to overlook the grammatical issues to a point and focus my attention more on the heart-warming stories and lovable characters instead.
Overall, this series is just one big hurt/comfort snuggle-fest, and I for one will be riding this wave until the end.
Gah! I love these stories! First, Jenny rips your heart out – telling us how much Evan and his brother love one another – then she kills him off! Seriously, crying right from page one!
Second, she throws in a deaf brother, a service dog, and a hot construction guy – YES!
Evan was a really interesting character – I loved how much he loved his brother and how fierce and loyal he was about it – so much that he lost his voice in his grief. I have to admit, however, that I was disappointed that there was a sudden change in that he seemed to “miraculously” be able to use his voice. I was really hoping that he and Jury would end up signing together or something like that.
Jury was a little less clear for me than some of the other characters in this series. He’s sweet and kind but I didn’t get to know him as an individual as much as we got to know Evan or some of the other partners in the series. He felt more blank slate to me, and I wish we’d gotten to see more of his interactions with Caleb or his family.
The editing seemed a lot better this time around, though the grammar is still something that needs attention.
However, even with these niggles, I have to admit that I just LOVED this story. It met all my hurt/comfort, insta-love needs and I devoured this as soon as it reached my hands!
Highly recommended for fans of the author, the series and for fans of hurt MCs who find love and devotion with someone equally sweet and wonderful.
Evan and Jury's story has been nice... But that's it.
We met Evan in the previous Unlikely Heroes book, For All He's Worth, and we knew that his story is tragic and traumatic... He's lost his twin brother, he has nightmares and he has doesn't speak...
Jury has a deaf brother, Caleb, with whom he chooses a service dog in a shelter - that's where Evan meets Jury for the first time...
After that everything goes too easy fot my liking... Evan suddenly starts to speak, almost without any problems. Jury and Evan fall head over heels in love with each other very insta-ish. And I hoped for a little more of Caleb, especially since the brothers seemed to be very close. Oh, I liked Max.
I really should stop reading Unlikely Heroes here, I problably should've after the previous book... To read or not to read the last yet published volume?
I feel like I've been waiting ages for this one! Ooooh, how I knew he was going to be tragic. I just knew it and you didn't disappoint. Evan was a broken man after losing his brother and his voice in battle. I really felt that whole scene in hospital with his brother. It broke my heart woman, it really did! I loved the banter between all the guys, you really know how to do banter, especially between Alvin and josh. Those two still crack me up. Then Jury, (odd name but I like it), he was so sweet. You could tell he just wanted to scoop Evan up and put him in his pocket so he could love him and make him feel better. He did too, even when Evan was pushing him away, he still wanted to be there for him. I love, love like that... like even if I'm miserable, as long as your happy, I'll be content in my misery and I felt like that's how Jury was, even though it wasn't that dramatic.
Just every bit of this story spoke to me and I loved every second of it. I'm sad that it's over and I'm looking forward to who's next... Perhaps it'll be Dax and Kash? Hmmmm
2nd Read 10-5-18 Same thoughts as the first time I read it.
1st read 5-15-17 I love Jenny Wood's books. I've been looking forward to Evan's books for a while now and while I liked it. I wasn't in love with it, like I had hoped. There is no doubt that Jenny is a good storyteller, but this one seemed to be missing something, for me.
I'm pretty bummed I can't rate this higher, but I'll still keep reading the series!
I knew Evan was going to be an emotional rollercoaster. Man you knocked this out of the park. I absolutely loved it . The whole thing had me in tears from page 1. thank you for giving Evan a voice and a story.
Great series, but, it is in need of serious editing. Grammatical errors, (...so that's what I done. /...which is exactly what I done./Well, Max and I was wondering... And more in the same vein). Also words left out of sentences and sentences that don't make any sense such as, I was going to be under contract Dax's his PI team... Rereading what you've written or having another person beta reading your work Before you publish should be a given. Possibly understandable if it is you're a newbie author, but not so understandable if you've published as many books as Jenny Wood has. Her stories are engrossing, her characters are memorable, and her storylines are well put together. I also like that characters from previous books make integral appearances in following books in a series. All in all, I will continue to read this author's works because I like her characters and storylines. I just hope she cleans up her editing.
Evans story was a must read for me from the time he was introduced in Trent and Kade 's story I wanted to know more. His story was so sad and heartbreaking the love he had for his brother and the hurt and loss he suffered really touched my heart and had me grieving right along with him. I loved how the guys were there for him and how Jury and his brother slowly made their way into the crew and Jury made his way into Evan's heart. Such a good story with old and new characters and plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
I love this series, I really do but the editing is an issue for me, probably because I'm a bit of a word nazi. It's not 'I done it' it's 'I did it'. It's things like that, that drives me nuts, and it's all through the series. That's just one example. If like me you can look past it you will enjoy the men in all of the books.
Awesome series. Well written story line with well developed characters. We met a few new guys and I am only bummed because at the moment this is last book published. I now have to wait for the next one. I also love her other series Kennedy Ink and I am waiting on new books for them also. Can't wait.
This was such a Sweet story. The Proloque hit me right in the feels. Jury ahh I just loved him he was just perfect for Evan and I adore books with puppies in them ♡.
The plots are good and I like that you carry prior book characters forward to the next book. My only complaint is that there are a ton of editing errors in the stories. That needs to be addressed. Otherwise give me more stories I love your characters.
I love both MCs! This was so heartbreakingly sweet omg! I'm thinking on maybe reading the other books from this series now... let's see how that goes. Fully recommend it!
I just knew that Evan was going to be beautiful and heartbreaking! He really was! And Jury reminded me so much of Carter, he was just patient and understanding and so genuine. I loved them together, I loved how they took it slow in the beginning and everything progressed so naturally. This is one of the best in this series, in my opinion. It wasn't an ugly cry for me, but I did tear up a time or two. Well done, Jenny! Another fantastic read!
This would have been a decent four star book if it had been edited. Alas, it wasn't. The punctuation was horrific, there were misspelled words and a number of instances where homophones were used, eg patients instead of patience, speck instead of spec, etc. I strongly encourage the author to have the book edited, and once that's done, I'd be happy to recommend it to others to read.
What a fantastic read! The beginning of the story had me in tears and I appreciated the low key attraction or sexual tension between Evan and Jury because it made what Evan went through and his pain and his slow recovery more believable.
Maybe two or so erotic scenes and that was peddle to for me because the story truly focused on the characters and their emotional development towards each other and the very less than perfect miserable situation Evan had to face.
I loved both Evan and Jury. I liked Evan because he was such a broken man & being able to watch his journey in healing himself was a sweet thing to watch. It just broke your heart about his brother. Jury, I just loved because he was so easy going but a little shy at times. I love how he was with his brother & his family. I actually wanted to hear more about his brother...I liked him, lol. Anyway...cute read with adorable main characters.
