Werewolves. Vampires. Zombies. Detective Jake Daggers believes in them all. But when an aristocrat disappears from her home amid a tide of supernatural whispers, Daggers suspects money is more likely to blame.
Until he realizes the woman vanished without a trace. Until his skin prickles with inexplicable fear. Until he spots the ghostly trace in the fog for himself.
Now Daggers and his partner Steele are stuck at the woman's palatial estate, surrounded by people they can't trust, and Daggers is about to take the ride of his life, a mystical journey into a place between worlds. For Daggers to take his life back, he'll have to rip it free. He'll have to STEELE LIFE.
Hi! I'm mystery, fantasy, and science fiction author Alex P. Berg. Be sure to check out my bestselling Daggers & Steele series, a fun, fast-paced fantasy/noir mystery hybrid! I've also written urban fantasy, epic sci-fi, and more.
My review rating system is as follows: 5 = Amazing, I absolutely loved it! (Fantastic!) 4 = A very good book, although I had a few quibbles with it. (Great!) 3 = A book I liked, but either it had a few more serious problems or I didn't connect well with it. (Good!) 2 = I had major issues with this book. (Not good...) 1 = I hated or DNF'ed this book. (Real bad!)
Great mystery and twisty storyline, Daggers falls into some crazy spots in this book, but he handles with his usual aplomb. Looking forward to the next one
Excellent read! This was a real 'whodunnit' complete with an odd family, a huge mansion, engaging characters, and the mystery of the the vanishing people. The ending caught me by surprise, so unique!
Another good read. Daggers and Steele had a few more twists and turns to unravel. I suspected wrongly about who murdered Mrs. Vanderfeld , however I was surprised that they uncovered more people than expected. The fantasy world in the paintings was a little far fetched, but it was a interesting one. I also thought the ending stopped without Nell being rescued? I can’t believe Daggers and Steele would actually take time to eat something before finishing up his promise to Nell. Thanks to Daggers , he left me wondering again.
Steele Life was a great read. I've really become a fan of the series and couldn't wait for this one when I finished the last. The book didn't disappoint.
If you haven't read the first 7, it's not one to start with as the plot line ties into previous books.
This is not a typical Steele book. The ending seemed rushed and left too much unclear and unresolved. I have read all of the books and am aware that the series is coming to a close but I am hoping the writing won't suffer. I have enjoyed it very much and have looked forward to each new Daggers and Steele case.
Awesome story! Jake and Shay have mysteries to solve. Magic plays a big part in this excellent story. All I can say is you have to read this book because to say much would spoil the book for you. Mysteries will be solved and secrets will be revealed which is what you might expect with the wealthy family involved.
While I have enjoyed all of the books in this series so far, it seems that Mr. Berg really stepped up his game in this one. The writing was a cut above the previous books and really drew me in. The plot was interesting and the character development is continuing at a good pace.
The book did seem to end before it answered all the questions, I hope we hear more in the next one.
I really wasn't sure where this one was going until near the end and well? The series has kept up with its interesting twists! I'm just sad that there are only two more to go.
This, the 8th in the Daggers and Steele series, was a bit of a departure from the first seven books. The elfin half of the Daggers and Steele detective partnership seems to be not as involved in this mystery. Nor is there the usual mix of dwarfs, goblins, orcs, trolls and mages.
Having said that, the mystery is in this story is very well conceived and yes, it involves the strange and unusual typical of a murder mystery in one of Mr. Berg's stories.
If I could, I'd rate it a 4.5 to a 4.8, but the GoodReads ratings system doesn't allow for that.
Why did I not give the story a five? I like the characters the author has created in his world and the regular crew was not featured as heavily in this story. Also, Daggers is cleaning up his act, which is understandable if you know what his motivation is. I'd clean up too. But I miss the classic noir attitude of Daggers and his old outlook on life.
The mystery story line in Steele Life is the best, I think, the author has crafted yet. I just wish the standing characters had been a bit more involved.
Well worth the time to read. I'm just picking at nits if the truth be told.
Have been awaiting this book, after having read the first 7. I enjoyed this one very much. It was fast paced, nd easy to read. I have recommended this series to friends, and they have liked them too. I look forward to the next book!
