When I first read the blurb for Making It, I was not too keen to read the story. I don't like long separations, followed by rekindled passions (unless the MCs are very young when they first meet).

In my experience, people don't change that much, and there's always a reason the relationship failed in the first place.

In this case, Eli left Devan following a whirlwind courtship and marriage because he couldn't deal with the pressure of their surrogate mother suffering another miscarriage. Or at least that's what he told Devan. And himself.

In reality, Eli, a MMA fighter, was stressed out over his mother's declining health and pushed by his manager to stay in the closet. He and Devan were fighting constantly, because Eli was angry and completely separated from his emotions. He wasn't sharing any of his worries with Devan, keeping everything bottled inside.

When Eli returns to help Zack, Nolan, and the gang promote the Ringside gym, he knows he has to see Devan again. What he doesn't expect is to meet Devan's 11-month-old son, Matthew, who could possibly be his biologically.

Eli and Devan never officially divorced because Eli's manager refused to let Eli have any contact with Devan. (How they managed their taxes remains a mystery, but whatever; this is fiction.)

When they see each other again, they definitely feel a spark, but Devan doesn't trust Eli, even if Eli appears to be a changed man.

I liked both MCs. Devan was willing to spend time with Eli but didn't forgive him immediately. And Eli was careful to give Devan his space and protect Devan and the baby from publicity.

Eli was so sweet with Matthew; he even offered to babysit so Devan could go on a date (this works out for the best, trust me).

Making It is a truly engaging read. I was so involved in the story, I read it in one sitting. I just wish there had been more steam and a stronger HEA.

Nothing bums me out more then when a book I've been really anticipating just doesn't click with me.

The whole foundation of this book is Devan and Eli's marriage and how it fell apart three years ago. Everything about this book is built off of that. And therein lies my problem...I didn't feel anything. I wasn't connected to their relationship at all. That emotion that was supposed to pull at the heartstrings and carry you through the story was completely missing for me.

I wanted more about how they fell in love, what their happy times were like, why their relationship was such a whirlwind....and why both men felt like they couldn't communicate with each other (like, at all) in those last few months where things fell apart.

Eli kept all of his stresses buried (beginning his fighting career, a sick mother, uncertainty about becoming a father) and Devan functioned with a single-minded focus of becoming a father and starting a family with Eli. On the night of their surrogate's miscarriage, Eli up and leaves. Poof. Bye bye for three years. Who does that?

Eli returns for various reasons....none of which are Devon. When Devon sees that Eli will be appearing at Ringside Gym for a promotional event, he musters up the courage to head over and serve Eli with divorce papers. Naturally all those old feelings, both good and bad, come bubbling back up.

However, Devon isn't flying solo anymore. He comes with baggage...or should I say, a stroller. Now, as much as I applaud Devon for not letting heartbreak deter his dreams of becoming a father, there is one thing that REALLY, REALLY bothered me....A LOT. Because of this, no matter what, I couldn't fully warm up to Devon.

The angst that should have been present with Devon figuring out if he could trust Eli again and Eli coming to terms with how he feels about fatherhood (and the fact that he's not out professionally) just wasn't there.

At the end of the day, I never understood the motivations/actions of either man. Even when I finished the book, I didn't feel like I knew either of them....and I still wasn't any closer to developing a connection with their romance.

I think this is the end of this series (I didn't see any hints of future books) and I'm sad to see it go. I've really enjoyed it. Book 2, Faking It, was hands down my favorite of the series...and one of my favorite reads of the year.

I'm a fan of the Ringside Romance series and I love Christine d' Abo's writing. Making It was a good, engaging read but I didn't love it as much as the first two books.

My main problem was that I couldn't figure out Eli at first. Why did he left? Does he want Devan back? Why did he leave that way? Is he a changed man? And then it hit me! Eli is...Big (don't laugh!). Have you watched Sex and the City, the film, where Big loves Carrie Bradshaw but he's too fearful of the wedding ceremony and marriage, and gets cold feet at some point? If you 've watched it, this was almost the same thing, but add a baby to the mix. I know I may not make sense to you, but this clicked so much in my brain and helped me understand Eli, I had to share.

As I 've said before, I love seperation periods and second chances in my books. It gives the characters time and space to realise their mistakes and their feelings for the other person. What went wrong? What can we do to fix it? Do we want to? All these things happened here, but in theory. On page, I didn't see how Eli changed from that person who was scared shitless of sharing himself with a family, to the person who wanted to be a husband and a father again. And that was my biggest problem.

I liked Devan a lot, although he forgave Eli a bit too fast for my tastes. I loved his giving nature and the kind of father he was. I will agree with him, though, that Eli was not the only one at fault for their failed relationship.

I also liked the tension throughout the book, and the UST, although there isn't a lot of steam. Eli's jealousy moments were a nice touch as well. My favorite scene is when Eli and Devan opened the folder about the paternity test results.

I did have to suspend disbelief at some points, like Devan not being able to find Eli for the divorce papers for three years, or .

I know I sound like I'm complaining too much, but I did like the book. It read easily and I liked seeing the other guys again. I stil recommend it for fans of the series and the author.

3.5 stars for book 3 of the Ringside Romance series

While it can be read as a stand-alone romance, the previous book characters do make appearances. If you read this one alone, you'll miss the boxing gym's background as well as the bar's background. Neither of those things will impact your understanding of this story, but I always prefer to know all the background in a series and enjoy reappearances of favorite characters.

This one features MMA fighter Eli. Pursuing a career in a still largely homophobic sport, Eli has to make tough decisions about revealing who he is.

The strong, silent type who deals with emotions in the boxing ring, Eli is unprepared to confront the pain with his husband when their surrogate mother miscarries for the 2nd time. He walks out on Devan at the worst possible time.

Three long years later, Devon has picked up the pieces and moved on with his life. Making his own dreams come true. The only thing still hanging over his head is the unsigned divorce paper he's been trying to get to Eli for the last three years.

When Eli makes an appearance in his home town, Devon is determined to get the signature that will allow him to finally put the past behind him.

It's quite painful to watch them come back together. We were introduced to them during an intensely emotional scene. Seeing them face each other again after three long years is nerve racking.

The first reveal is a "dear in headlights" one. The second one is more of a gut-punch. The climax felt a little too convenient but I could roll with it. I seriously hated Eli's manager. I wanted to climb through my Kindle and get at him myself.

I enjoyed the story. I didn't doubt that these two loved each other even though their choices confused me. I found the surrogate mother scenario just a bit out in left field. But, like all escape fiction, you just have to roll with some of these assumptions.

I am a fan of this series.

So I love a hero who seems as though he’s beyond redemption before I even open the book. And it’s safe to say that a hero who has deserts his family fits that bill. But despite what the blurb led me to believe, that’s not quite what this story was. And I think it may have been better for it. Making It is the third book in the Ringside Romance series, and while I was able to jump right into this one and follow the story without reading the first two, I think there are parts that would have meant more to me had I read Working It and Faking It. And my curiosity is sparked enough so that I will be going back and read the first two books, especially Nolan’s, as I think that man has quite the history.

One of the things I really liked about this story was that I felt these characters were on even ground as far as their support systems went. Devan had a wonderful friend in Meg. And my favorite thing about her was that when Eli left, she was fiercely loyal to Devan and all about being there for him. But she wasn’t so steeped in her dislike of Eli so that when he returned, she wasn’t able to see both sides of the story and offer Devan sound advice. And Eli had good friends at Ringside Gym that weren’t hesitant to let him know he’d messed up, and his best bet was to fix things. And quick.

Now I will say this story isn’t without its issues. The biggest for me was that there were points in this story where both main characters thought that a baby could be just the thing to make their relationship better and ‘save’ their marriage. It left a bad taste in my mouth, but by the end of the story, it was clear any baby these two men shared was going to be loved unconditionally, so while it did bother me, I was able to (sort-of) get over it. Also, while they were trying to work things out, it felt as though Devan was playing games with Eli, and I found it incredibly frustrating. I know Devan was scared and hurt, but I didn’t think the way he went about things was very mature.

Having said all of that, I found this book very enjoyable despite my issues. I adored both of these men (though I would have liked more backstory on both,) and the story flew right by for me, so clearly the pacing was on. I also liked the event at the end that brought the two of them back together, giving Eli an opportunity to show how devoted he was to Devan. Overall I thought Making It was a nice story of two people finding their way back to loving each other again and trusting each other more than before, and if you’re a fan of romance, I recommend picking this one up.

Without trying to be disrespectful, I genuinely think that Devan's character can be switched into a woman and this story still works. It did remind me a lot of secret baby books that I often found in category romance, when I still read a lot of those in my teens/early twenties.

Having said that, I deliberately picked Making It because the author said that she wanted to use secret baby trope (and all its glory) in MM romance (I read her explanation in a blog tour). SO, I read this while embracing the good, the bad, and the cliches, which includes the big bad manager who doesn't want his client to be gay OR that plot device that involves .

This is my first read from Christine d'Abo ... I haven't read the first two books in this series but I have no problem following the plot; so safely to say you can jump into this series without having to read it in order.

Making It is the third book in Christine d'Abo's Ringside Romance series. They can all be read as standalones, but you so see the couples from the previous story in this one. You wouldn't be lost if you read them out of order tho. Ever since I first read the synopsis for this one, I knew I needed to get my hands on it. It sounded like one I would absolutely love. Unfortunately, I didn't end up loving this one as much as I had hoped.

I had issues "shipping" these two character's relationship. Eli was a really hard character to connect with. He is very closed off and hides all of his emotions, except for maybe aggression. He drove me crazy because any time there was a moment when he was starting to feel emotional about something he ran away. He never talked about anything that was going on. He was like a robot. He barely had any character growth in the story, so it's not like he "got any better" either. lol! Devon's character, on the other hand, was very likable and personable. He was a wonderful father and had a very caring nature. He frustrated me at times too, tho.

There were quite a few things about this one that I didn't end up loving so much. For one, I did not like how fast Devon forgives Eli. What Eli did was really unforgivable, but because Devon had the hots for him, he just gave in. That made me mad. He even let Eli watch his son! That was a little unbelievable for me, especially because Eli has NO experience with children. I really wanted a big grovel from Eli and we never really got it. He gives a pretty half-assed apology and hasn't seemed to change too much at all. I normally really enjoy 2nd chance romances, but only when the characters seem to learn from their mistakes and are trying to change. Eli doesn't have that change until the very end of the story and that bugs me.

There were only a couple intimate scenes between the two of them, so the steam doesn't take over the story. It just takes a while for things to happen because things are so confusing between them and they are both wondering where they stand most of the time.

This one wasn't a win for me, but I did enjoy the previous 2 books in this series, and will probably continue to try new romances from Christine d'Abo.

Devan and Eli's story is a total and complete picture of what it can be like when a married couple doesn't talk to each other, doesn't listen to each other, doesn't really know each other enough to see the little signs. This is when a married couple, or any couple really, doesn't communicate well. It's a frustrating thing for me to read because while I'm not in a perfect relationship, I am in one where I know that we communicate well. Sometimes people thing too well.

So when I read characters in romance that are flawed and have a lot of issues, and they have someone who is there for them yet can't find a way to talk their feelings out, yea, I get frustrated. But it also makes me really happy when those characters work through their issues, struggle through the rough road and finally get to the place where they can open up and be truthful with each other.

And that's what this was for me. I really liked Making It because these guys work for it. They go through all kinds of emotions, taking me along for the ride with them.

There are some minor issues I have, mostly dealing with the way Eli never once went back to his contact to see if there was something that was being done by his manager that he could use against him. The fact that even Eli took as long as he did to stand up for himself. But he finally does do it. He finally does and that's where the fun lies.

I also enjoyed touching base again with Zack and Nolan, Max and Grady. When a series spans over many characters, it's important to keep them involved, and I think that's done well here.

Looking forward to the next book... there is another book, right? :)

MAKING IT is the last book in the romance series RINGSIDE ROMANCES, a series that can be read out of order or without having read the previous books. However I would recommend reading the previous books if you want a fuller picture and how and why Ringside Gym came to be.

MAKING IT doesn't take it's time, starting with a prologue of the couple breaking up three years prior to the beginning of the story. It doesn't hesitate to go in deep, as the first scene of the book is Eli and Devan's surrogate experiencing a second miscarriage.

Their relationship is described as a whirlwind sort, and you can definitely tell but you can also see the amount of love and care they had for one another and how hard they both took their breakup and divorce.

When the pair do eventually see each other again after three years separated, it's shown that they are still very much in love with one another. They both having strikingly different personalities, Devan more soft and level headed, while Eli is more rough around the edges and a more broken person, the kind to run from his problems when they're too much to handle. But he also cares about those close to him. When he meets Devan's son Matthew he quickly accepts him as part of Devan's life, as he was well aware of Devan's desire for a kids, and takes on a fatherlike roll. He showed a lot of effort in trying to take care of him, something Devan clearly appreciated.

The second change romance upped the book. Throughout it you're rooting for these two to talk things out and get back together as it's clear what they both want, even if the situation isn't too ideal. The main factor holding them back is Eli's MMA maneger, Stephen. Stephen is entirely against Eli being out as gay publicly, most out of fear it'll ruin his career. The homomisia of the sport was explored to its fullest, but it was an element of the book and a big reason to the couple getting back together.

I'd say this is my favourite of the series, the second chance element drew me right into the book and I highly recommend this series as it plays with a lot of tropes really well leading to enjoyable, quick to read, romances.

4.5 Stars Christine d’Abo has written a very fine depiction of a second chance romance, one of the most genuine I’ve ever read. The story offers the POV of both characters, and elements that each contributed to the breakup are clear. Another difference is they’re a married couple and neither the breakup nor the reconciliation is treated superficially. Eli and Devan went through a very fast courtship and marriage and the prologue opens on the night that Eli breaks down and walks away. He insulates himself in the demands of MMA training and fighting, where he’s also forced to remain in the closet. Devan rebuilds his life and has his best friend, the prospective surrogate mother, for emotional support.

I’m trying not to spoil any details of the story but want to make clear that Eli did not walk away from a child. But it was still an awful thing to do to Devan. When Eli returns, to do promotion for his friends at Ringside Gym, Devan is made aware and he has pressing reasons to speak with Eli in person. Their emotions draw them together but progress is made slowly. I appreciated the level of communication, that both took ownership of their faults and Eli never made excuses or tried to guilt-trip Devan. Sex is also at a minimum, which goes along with the storyline and suits the pace of re establishing their relationship and rebuilding trust. That said, there were a couple of plot points used that I questioned, strongly. It overlooked the affordability and legal protections for surrogacy, the divorce process wasnt treated logically, and Eli’s lack of attention was glossed over. (For three years? Seriously?!)

There was more focus on the gym in this story with Zack and Nolan as a large part, as well as appearances by Grady and Max. There’s a secondary character, Pierce that I think will be in a future story. For fans of second chance romance, I think this is quite worthwhile, since it avoids repetitive themes used in some other books. It’s a bit of a melancholy story at times but the ending and epilogues lifts the mood and satisfied my need for an HEA.

Review by The Blogger Girls.

I had mixed feelings going into this book – I was really looking forward to Eli’s story, but I’m not generally a fan of children/babies in my stories. I’m glad I gave it a shot though, because it was a sweet story once the guys got over the various bumps in the road.

Eli is an up and coming MMA superstar. Because of this, he was forced to keep his marriage and relationship to a man secret. When a second attempt at having a baby failed, along with other pressures in Eli’s life, he imploded and ran.

Devan, having a baby and someone to love and love him back unconditionally was something he longed for. He thought Eli was on the same page as him, but after Eli’s departure, Devan went ahead on his own. Now, fast forward three years, and Eli is back in town to help his friends promote the opening of Ringside Gym (we met him and the other guys in the previous books).

When Devan takes the opportunity to finally get in contact with Eli to sign the divorce papers, something he has been unable to accomplish up to this point, they each realize the feelings are still there. Eli knows he has a lot to make up for and whether the baby is his or not, realizes he wants to try and make a life with Devan. Unfortunately, his career is in the way of that happening. Or, more specifically, his manager, with whom he is stuck in a ridiculously strict contract. So, Eli is torn and stuck in the middle of towing the line with the sleezy manager, or facing the possibility of said manager ruining his career at best, making life more miserable for Devan at the worst.

In the end, Eli makes the right choices, but he doesn’t have it easy, which is to be expected. I didn’t enjoy this quite as much as the previous stories, but that is mainly because of the dynamics at play here and the fact that the end was wrapped up way too quickly. Something that was a worry throughout the entire story is taken care of in a few pages and it felt glossed over. Other than that, it was a great addition to the series. It was great seeing the other guys again from the previous stories, and I’m definitely looking forward to more.

“He deserved better than what you did to him.”
“Yes, he did.” He looked over his shoulder at Zack. “That’s why I left.”

This is book 3 in the Ringside Romance Series and is Eli and Devan's story. Eli and Davan were married and trying for a baby via a surrogate Meg who is Devans best friend. After two failed miscarriages Eli ends things with Devan and leaves to concentrate on his career as an up and coming MMA fighter.

I found it a little hard to like Eli after that. I know he had his reasons and there were issues on both sides but I couldn't help feeling a little annoyed with him for just walking away like that. So it's 3 years later and Devan has an 11 month old son Matthew and Eli is back in town to care for his mother who has had another stroke and is in a nursing home. He starts training back at Ringside with his old friends Zack and Max and eventually seeks out Devan. When he does he finds he has a son who looks remarkably like himself.

So let me explain that a little. When Devan and Eli were trying for a baby the doctors used their mixed sample to impregnate Meg but when Davan decided to go it alone after Eli left he provided a new one of just his. Somehow the samples got mixed up (!) and now there's a chance little Matthew could be Elis's ..... look I know this is just a story but this was all a little silly. Next came the paternity test.

Also they are still technically married! Devan was unable to get hold of Eli to sign the divorce papers over the last 3 years as Eli's manager kept blocking him. Would this happen in real life?!! Surely lawyers and or the courts would be able to contact him?! Odd.

So they start getting to know each other again. I was really pleased with Devan because he didn't instantly forgive Eli and he was mindful of not exposing Matthew to Eli in case it didn't all work out. Although he did then let Eli babysit whilst he went on a date with Pearce! Who he decides to just be friends with then we never hear about him again??!!!.

There were some good parts to this book. Loved catching up with the previous characters and Meg was a great new character. I loved Devan and I must reluctantly admit Eli grew on me and he was really sweet with Matthew which I loved.

Ive really enjoyed this series and this is certainly not a terrible book I just really didn't enjoy it as much as the others.

I was super excited about this book. I love a good second chance story. Unfortunately this didn't live up to my expectations.

The book starts three years in the past. Eli and Devon are married and they're in a bad place. Things happen and Eli walks away from it all and the way he does it is truly horrible. My status update at this point said "Eli exhibited a bionic level of asshattery. He's going to need to crawl through broken glass while begging for forgiveness for this to work for me."

And there is the problem. He didn't. He just shows back up, says he's sorry and they're seeing each other again. I couldn't understand any decision Devon made at this point. They do this weird thing where they decide Devon should see other people so he knows he wants Eli back (but he hasn't dated at all in the three years he's been gone) AND he leaves his kid with Eli as the babysitter. Devon was like that one friend we all have who makes constant decisions that make you scream "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING!?!" internally every time you talk about their relationship.

Despite the dramatic set up, the story is actually low angst and low drama and a nice and mello love story. Which is not necessarily a bad thing but it was absolutely not what I was expecting or wanting from this book.

This is the third book in the series but is fine as a standalone. You see both couples from books one and two in this but the way the books are done they can all be easily read on their own.

Devan and Eli were happily married and working on trying to have a baby, until they weren't. Eli decided being a husband and a father weren't for him. Those things didn't fit into his life as an up and coming MMA fighter, so he walked away from Devan. Devan was heartbroken, but after pulling himself together decided he still wanted the family they'd been planning, with or without Eli, something Devan never had as a child, so his best friend and surrogate, Meg and he decided to go through with the plans and Devan now has a happy and well-adjusted eleven-month-old son, Matthew. Life for Devan is hectic, but he's moved on and loves being a father. The only thing missing in his life is someone special to share it all with. Then Eli comes back into town. Will they give it another try or walk away for good this time?

I'll be honest, I absolutely loved book one in this series, but was a bit disappointed with book two, so I wasn't sure what to expect from book three, Making It. I wasn't disappointed. This was a fabulous addition to the Ringside series, and I absolutely loved it.

I really liked Eli, but I absolutely fell in love with Devan. He was an amazing man. He's sweet, caring and lovable, but with a bit of snark to his personality that made him funny as well. Eli was a bit rougher around the edges, but he could be sweet and tender too, especially when it came to Devan and Matthew. I really loved the interactions, both individually and together as a couple, between both Eli and Devan with Matthew. They were so swoon worthy. The chemistry between Devan and Eli was off the charts. The electrical current between them sparked off the pages of the book.

This was a really enjoyable read. It's full of so much emotion. It's well-written and it was paced well. It's romantic and sweet, but has a good bit of angst as well that kept my stomach in knots. Frankly, I couldn't see a way for Devan and Eli to make this relationship work, not with the threats of Eli's evil manager, Stephan, who I hated! The author did a good job at showing us what happened previously between Eli and Devan while keeping the story in the present.

I really enjoyed this book. I absolutely could not put it down once I started. I really loved getting to catch up with Grady and Max and of course my favorite couple, Nolan and Zack. I'm hoping to see more stories in this series in the future and would definitely love to see more of these characters in the future! Highly recommendable!!

3.5 Stars. Making It is the 3rd book in Ringside Romance but can easily be read as a stand alone. This book centers around Eli who is an MMA fighter and his husband Devan. Usually, I like to see the beginning of a relationship and in this book we are dropped in after Eli and Devan had a whirlwind courtship, got married and are trying to begin a family. When their surrogate mother has a miscarriage Eli leaves Devan. He tells Devan it's because he doesn't want a family and can't deal with the pressure but the truth is that Eli is under pressure from a lot of different things and hasn't opened up to Devan about any of them.

When Eli returns to help his friends promote Ringside gym it's been three years and he's had no contact with Devan although Devan has tried to contact him to get divorce papers signed. (Okay there are few things about this scenario that were a bit unbelievable but I just went with it). Eli knows he still has strong feelings for Devan but he doesn't feel like he deserves him after walking out on him. When Eli takes the divorce papers over to Devan he meets his 11 month old son who could possibly be his biological son. There is still a strong spark between the two of them and Eli decides to see if he can salvage their relationship.

I liked both MCs and wanted things to work out for them but I struggled a little bit with Eli's passive behavior at times. He wanted to give Devan the space he said he needed and yet I never felt like he really pursued Devan and worked hard enough to be forgiven. At the same time, I loved that Eli takes a hard look at the marriage and realizes that there were some faults on his side as well (although he doesn't excuse Eli's walking out he is realistic that they both made mistakes.)

I really enjoyed seeing Eli bond with the baby and open to Eli about all the things he had previously held back.

I enjoyed this relationship centered and engaging book although I would have liked to see a more solid HEA.

My Review:

And this is where reading is subjective. When I go to write my reviews, I grab the cover and blurb off Goodreads. I usually try to ignore the ratings, although I'll see the overall score at the top. I was shocked when I went to grab those things on this book and saw the low rating...because honestly, I loved this book. I thought this was the best book in the series so far....but I'll be honest, I've thought this entire series has been fantastic!

So, this book is a second chance at love story. Three years ago, Eli walked away from his marriage when he and his husband lost their second child to miscarriage. He just couldn't do it anymore. Devan hasn't seen or heard from Eli since, not even a response to him needing Eli to sign the divorce papers. So when Devan finds out Eli is in town, he sees the chance to put an end to their farce of a marriage once and for all.

BUT neither one of them put those emotions to bed. They just pushed them to the side...and Devan had no idea what all was exactly happening with Eli during that time.

I love second chance at love stories, and thought this was a brilliant one. Devan was incredibly hurt by the blindside of Eli walking away. For Eli, he's simply learned to shut his emotions off completely. Neither one of them has dealt with the emotional fall-out from the failure of their marriage and neither wants to go through that kind of upheaval ever again. Neither one trusts.

In the midst of all this is the pressures of dealing with a cranky, teething baby. Also Eli is on the cusp of the biggest MMA fight of his life. Nothing about this story is easy...and that's made even more complicated by the angst between the two characters. And all their friends who were there when the fallout happened the first time.

Personally, I loved this story. I definitely recommend it.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

This was so good!! I loved the book!

Making It is a continuation of Ringside Romance series. This novel is a second chance romance between MMA fighter Eli and phlebologist Devan. They were married before Eli walked away but they never finalized their divorce. When Eli meets Devan after those years apart, he learns that Devan now has a 11 month old son Matthew. Beautifully written story about love, family, regret and second chances.

I love this book! It's my favorite in the series so far. The pacing is wonderful, I love dual pov from Eli and Devan. The frequent cameos of Zach and the guys from previous books were more than welcome. Weirdly enough, I don't like stories about characters getting pregnant or being pregnant, I'm living up for characters who already have children. I love Matthew and the beautiful father/son relationship between Devan and Matthew (later Eli and Matthew).

The story addressed ingrained homophobia of the sport community. No mater how loud people cry that "the gays have marriage right and they aren't prosecuted for being queer", homophobia is still a relevant issue. I appreciate that the author brings attention to it.

But back to happier things. The romance was a delight! I enjoyed seeing them slowing falling back in love and seeing them grow as individuals and as a couple. I think Eli has a more drastic character development than Devan but both of them realized a few things and now their marriage is healthier/happier after facing their insecurities and problems.

A mild criticism about Stephan subplot. It was a) unnecessary tension in my opinion and b) the whole issue dissolved so quickly which made me wonder why it had been made such a big deal before.

I highly recommend y'all to read Ringside Romance series, it's one of my unexpected and pleasant discoveries of 2017 and I can't stress enough how much I enjoyed reading these book.

2.5 Emotionally draining. I was so invested in the outcome of this relationship, and maybe it was full of real life situations and stresses, but it just felt depressing to me and some of Dev's decisions made no sense. The MCs ended up together but I didn't get what I wanted out of the story. I guess it was realistic that Eli had to make a difficult choice between his career and his husband but, given all the build up with Stephan and his opponent, it would have been much more satisfying. The press conference wasn't satisfying either. Dev never actually stands with him in front of the reporters. It would have made more sense for them to actually see his injuries. AND Eli refers to Mattie as Dev's son (my husband and his son). OUR son would have gone over so much better! So after enduring all of that, it was all just meh in the end. 2.5

This is the third book in the series, and rounds off the three friends who trained together as youngsters and bring back to life their gym; either by running it. funding it or publicising it. They each find their HEA along the way - and whilst you could read them in any order, as they are loosely linked, there is a natural order. I would say this is the least connected of the three.

I enjoyed the premise behind the story, and as we got to know Eli better, we could start to understand what was going through his head three years ago, but I am not sure I would be as forgiving as Devan. Definitely a case of "what the heart wants", even if he makes some rules! For all the conflict, in and out of the ring, there was a rather effective, down to earth quality about both the men which was very refreshing. Eli was doing maintenance at his Mum's house, Devan was a bit of a messy person about the house. I enjoyed the familiarity which made their time together much more significant, and yet still new and hot, as they relearned each other.

A really good series, which dealt with a good range of issues, with both some super hot guys, and some unexpected twists. Thank you Ms d'Abo.

I think my favorite part of this book was that it’s unique while not going so far outside the norm that it’s unrealistic. I’m always a fan of second chance romances and this one isn’t an exception – I really enjoyed it.

Eli and Devan are married shortly after only being together a short time. They’ve been trying to have a child together for quite a while and when their surrogate suffers another miscarriage Eli uses it as an excuse to leave Devan’s life. Eli is an MMA fighter who is being pushed by his rude as heck manager to stay in the closet on top of the stress of his mothers health issues. Now, almost 2 years later Eli returns to help his friends promote their local gym and discovers a huge surprise. Devan has an 11-month old son who could possibly be biologically his. The attraction, of course, is still there and Eli knows he still loves Devan but he has a lot of trust to regain with Devan and it’s not going to be easy.

I loved both of the main characters – Devan is an amazing father and I think it’s great that he didn’t take Eli back right away, Devan really made Eli work to gain his trust back. Even going as far as to let Eli babysit while he went out on dates with other men… The book is definitely enjoyable and can be read as a stand-alone.

I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

I find it incredibly difficult to engage with a romance when I thoroughly dislike one of the MCs from the start and Eli is unforgivably awful! He runs away from his husband after their surrogate miscarries their child. He runs away from his mother after she has a stroke. Even married, he stays in the closet because he prioritises his MMA career above everything.

When Eli comes back to town, he is followed by all his MMA publicity and hype. He doesn’t seek Devan out for an apology. I wanted Devan to grab his child and run but he is too nice. And ‘nice’ is just as much a kiss of death in romance as it is in life. Sweet, kind, funny and good Devan allows himself to be swept up in Eli’s charisma. Urgh. I know these couples in real life. I want my romance heroes to be strong and brave and honourable.

Things get some better near the end. The role of Eli’s manager in his life should make it easier to forgive Eli but for me, it just confirmed that Eli was willing to sacrifice everything for his MMA career. We do get some flashy displays of commitment and remorse from Eli. They are kinda sweet. But I’m not sure his last minute choices make up for leaving Devan or treating him badly.

Beyond the romance, I enjoyed seeing the gym finally up and running and I liked watching the two previous couples settled and happy. I’m not a fan of babies in books and Devan’s father moments are a little too sweetly domestic for me. I’ve enjoyed this series but this definitely isn’t my favourite book in the series.

Devon thought he and Eli were on the path to the next big thing in their lives. Eli was perfect for him. All that was missing was the child he couldn't wait to raise with Eli. When the surrogate suffers another miscarriage it's too much for Eli. The stress he's been carrying around finally gets the best of him and he think Devon would be better without him.

The stress Eli carries between his manager that forces him to stay in the closet, his mother's health and not knowing if having a child with Devon is exactly what he wants is burying him, runs. After almost two years he's coming back to Ringside to help promote a fight. It's possibly the worst or best thing that can happen to him. He knows he'll see Devon but what he isn't expecting is seeing Devon's son.

I really enjoyed this series. The group of friends finding their HEA's with some drama and MMA thrown in.

I seriously had deja'vu when I read this book. I felt like I had read this story before. Maybe it was previously published or just so similar to something I have read before? The story was good. Eli and Devan were married, planned to have a baby and then Eli bolted. Three years later, they are thrown back together. You can tell there is chemistry and you want them to work things out. I do like how independent Devan is, he had a goal and he achieved it. I couldn't believe how blind Eli was about his manager and then when he confronted him I would have beat him down and he didn't! This was a sweet second chance love story with a little angst in there for good measure.

This book had a good solid foundation, and although I haven’t read the previous two books, it didn’t distract from this story being told. Eli and Devan are a good couple who were previously married, so this is all about second chances. I may actually go back and read the first two now before moving on to book 4. There was minimal sex, and fairly light on romance and angst. I liked it, a good solid 4 Stars

Making It by Christine d’Abo
Book #3: Ringside Romance Series
Source: Netgalley
My Rating: 4/5 stars

Devan has spent the last three years in mourning. On the night of his greatest tragedy, the loss of his unborn child, his husband, Eli also walked out on him. For three years Devan has tried to put his life back together, move forward, but that’s hard to do when your ex hasn’t signed the divorce papers and there’s no closure. What’s more, Devan still doesn’t know precisely why Eli left him.

Eli . . . .

For three years, Eli has worked to build his MMA career, hide the fact that he’s gay (for his career, of course!), and try to understand why he was such a coward and walked out on the only man he has ever loved. Though he never told Devan as much, their life together was everything and leaving it all behind in a fit of unspoken despair was the greatest mistake of Eli’s life. Now, after three long and somewhat miserable years, Eli has a chance to make things right.

Devan . . . .

Hearing of Eli’s return to town should throw Devan into a tailspin, but what it does is strengthen his resolve to get his divorce. Though he isn’t exactly comfortable with the ambush Eli in a public place approach, it is the safest way to safeguard his heart and minimize the risk of an episode. What Devan doesn’t count on is the support of old friends and some surprising news and behavior from Eli. For three years, Devan has lived under the assumption Eli has been ignoring his requests for a divorce when, in fact, the messages have never even reached his ex. What’s more, in their time apart, Eli has matured, mellowed out, and seems genuinely interested in making amends. To Devan is wary of this is a huge understatement.

Eli . . . .

Never in his wildest dreams would Eli suspect Devan of still wanting him or being receptive to taking him back. All Eli wants is to apologize and make things right, and that means providing Devan with some context for his previously horrifying, heartbreaking, and unexplained behavior. With each revelation, Eli is reminded of the many reasons he first fell in love with Devan. Devan is kind, compassionate, and understanding and it is those same qualities that are allowing Eli more and more time with Devan. Their encounters are heated, both emotionally and physically, and driven toward forgiveness, but real love is hard deny and becomes abundantly clear to both men that there may be a future for them even after all the pain.

The Bottom Line: Christine d’Abo is the queen of second chance romance!! Making It, what I am assuming is the final book in the Ringside Romance series, ends the trilogy on a high note with Devan and Eli coming through tremendous pain to once again find each other. This has a bit of everything for the gay romance lover including emotional drama, tender moments, very real trials, and moments of utter happiness. All of the original Ringside men and their partners come to call in Making It and you all well know, I love it when old characters come back to play once again. There is such a sense of love, friendship, and family in this series and that is what has kept me coming back time and again for more. If this is in fact the end of the series, well done, Christine d’Abo, well done!

I really enjoyed this installment of the Ringside Romance series. I love a good second chances story and Making It hits the nail on the head.

Eli can't handle his emotions. Rather than acknowledging them, discussing them when necessary, and moving past them, he shuts them down, pushes them away, and runs from the things causing him emotional distress. And at the beginning of this story, the emotional distress is turned up to eleven. His coping mechanism, faulty as it is, causes him to walk away from the man he loves and the family they're wanting to start. Devan, on his end, is more focused on the future - he's a child of the foster system, and all he's ever wanted is a family of his own. He wants the husband and the kids and the happily ever after, and making that happen is priority #1 for him. I give him huge props for knowing what he wants in life so young and going after it. But he's kind of got blinders on. Unless it has something to do with starting a family, he ignores it or, worse, it doesn't even cross his mind.

There were times while reading when I honestly couldn't see how Devan and Eli could find their way back together. They had some serious issues between them. There were even times when I wasn't sure I wanted them to be together. Because how much can people change, right? I'm not sure if I skipped over it somewhere, or have just forgotten from the first two books in the series, but I'm not sure if their ages were ever given. In my interpretation, Devan and Eli were very young when they first met and got married. The things Eli struggled with (still struggles with) at that age were things I can't fault him for. Hell, I'm nearly 31 and in therapy because I avoid and suppress my emotions like the plague. And while three years doesn't seem like a lot, in that time, Devan and Eli both go through a lot of change. Devan becomes a single parent, and, while I haven't been there, I can only imagine that that kind of forces you to find the things that are most important. Eli's still an empty shell but it's not sustainable - the things in his life that he's been pushing away have started to creep back in - his mother's declining health, his friendships, his dissatisfaction with his manager... his regret over the way things ended with Devan.

As difficult as it was at times to see how the two guys would find their way beyond their past, there was no denying that they fit. Devan's conflicted emotions about Eli, Eli's at times resigned determination to find a way back into Devan's life, the passion and chemistry between them every time they were together on page... it was all so wonderfully written. It was an emotional rollercoaster. I broke down in tears a couple of times, laughed at others, and cringed at still more. By the end, Eli and Devan have shown a lot of growth, and their HEA was hard-fought and hard-won.

Two stars for the writing, correct (I barely spotted any misprint), flowing and not too pretentious. Otherwise, the romance is weak, formulaic, bland -- the fabulous setting in English-speaking Canada, namely Toronto, gets utterly wasted; there is not a shred of couleur locale --, and the plotting sputters a lot. How can a romance shine when both parties are utter twats with an egotistical side the size of Texas ? Just look at the sheer implausibility of the basic conflict: one character gets a bee in his bonnet after yet another failed effort at surrogacy, tells his husband virtually nothing and puts on a disappearing act. There is worse to come. The one who got away, Eli, forgets (!) to grant his husband a divorce for three whole years on account of his busy life as a promising MMA fighter and due to his bastard of a manager having played interference (you know the usual drill: ban the gay in contact sports with a "manly" image); and Devan, the one who got dumped, has had a kid for eleven months from a surrogate without bothering to inform Eli that the clinic slipped up and might just have exchanged Devan's sperm with Eli's during the in vitro fertilization. To top it off, Eli is not even that interested in learning who is the biological father of little Matthew before Eli bludgeons his way back into his life. The author spends much time attempting, if not to redeem both characters, at the very least to make them look sweet(er); much of this process takes the form of dilly-dallying of a childish quality which never makes the reader more savvy with respect to their thought processes and what makes them tick -- that is, apart from fighting (for Eli) or filling up all the cases in a list of wordly possessions (for Devan: his dream job, his forever love, a kid). Talk about narrowly focussed minds ! When all is said and done, and the book has tediously limped towards a most disappointing, HFN ending, one hardly gets the impression that one knows Devan or Eli from the inside, despite the extensive inner discourse the reader is treated with; it goes without saying that I was hard pressed to feel the heat between them. To cut short a longer review which this mediocre book does not warrant: you get actually better plots with more rounded off characters from the average Harlequin straight romance.
