Fated Dragons #1

Mated To The Dragon

Rate this book
All her hard work had paid off. Dakota was finally going to be studying Art History abroad at Bangor University in Wales. It was a dream come true, everything was going to be perfect. Or so she had hoped. She knew about the dragons of Snowdonia, how couldn't she? The whole world knew dragons existed ever since The Occurrence. It's been years since then, but the one golden rule of the university was never get involved with a dragon. Dakota knew the consequences, she'd be sent home if she was caught even looking at one. Yet... here one was, standing in front of her in all it's glory. There was absolutely no way she could tell anyone about this.

Wesley was a bit of a show off. To be fair, he was flying home when he heard the girl gasp. His beast took control and flew straight toward the pretty little vixen. There was something different about this woman, he couldn't quite figure it out. She clearly thought he was magnificent, she wouldn't have gasped otherwise. Then why didn't she pay attention to him when he approached her? Even hours after he'd left, she was all he could think about...

Content Warning: This book contains lots of sexy shifter action. Intended for a mature audience only

Once again, Emilia Hartley delivers this wonderful paranormal romance story filled with strong and endearing main characters, hated villains, plenty of memorable romantic moments, and a bounty of great action scenes. I enjoyed every single page of it!

The book told the forbidden romance story between Wesley Taniff, a dragon shifter, and Dakota Brennan, a study abroad student.

Dakota didn't come from a wealthy family and she had worked so hard through her childhood for the chance to attend college and to become an art museum curator. So, when she had been offered a grant to study Welsh art and architecture abroad in Wales, she didn't even have to think twice.

Since the location of the university was somewhat near to the territory of Snowdonia, the Welsh Dragons' home, the students were warned about how dangerous these creatures could be. But most of all, it was very important to keep in mind that the university had a strict policy for students from abroad to follow. Whoever came across the dragons, much less got involved with them, would have no choice but to be sent back home immediately.

On Dakota's field trip to see the old castles, while she was sitting alone and drawing the ruins quietly, the dragon came into her sight and abruptly landed in front of her. Its unexpected appearance not only startled her, but it also scared the life out of her. But as she carefully watched it pouncing in circles around her, the dragon didn't show any signs of violence or that it wanted to harm her. Instead, it only tried to get her attention. Since she was alone, all she could do was do her best to pretend to ignore it and hope that nobody witnessed what happened here.

Wesley was a lonely dragon shifter who had lived a solitary life in the wild territory. Although he was still young as a dragon, only a couple of years over one hundred, he pretty much gave up trying to find his mate. But after he met Dakota that day, he couldn't get her out of his mind no matter how hard he tried. He felt so restless so he decided to go into town in hopes of finding some pleasures. He ran into her again at the pub but she didn't know that he was that dragon she met the other day. Then something happened and they finally became involved sexually.

He knew that he ultimately found his mate. Dakota was his mate. But what he didn't know was that being his mate would cause her deadly danger.

I loved both Wesley and Dakota. They were really lovely together. Wes was such an amazing shifter who really cared about his mate, and he wanted nothing but to make her happy. The beast inside him wanted to lock her up in order to keep her safe, but he knew better that she wouldn’t be happy to live her life like this. There was one thing for sure; without her, his life would be completely empty. He felt torn apart inside and it ripped his heart out, but there was nothing in this world he wouldn’t do for her, even if it meant letting her go.

Dakota was a strong, smart, brave, and reasonable woman. She was honest about her feelings and never hesitant to follow her heart. I can tell that I surprisingly enjoyed her character.

Despite the book’s fast pace, I still felt like I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. This was a great mix of beautiful romance, fun, drama, and heart-pounding action. If you’re looking for an enthralling paranormal romance novella, no need to look any further…Mated to the Dragon is for you!

”I knew that you were my mate before our first kiss,” he said into her skin.

Now I can’t wait to read more in this series!

This review is only for the Mated to the Dragon and not the other 4 bonus books in here.

I really liked the starting. Doesn't even bear mentioning but I have a thing for Dragons. No shit, I know. :p

I liked how this was different, kinda, from the others I've read. The take on Dragons when the "man"'s in control was something new. Except some parts didn't make sense. I get the dragons will at times being so powerful it could force the man to move (the good part) but when the dragon lashed out inside the man's head, the surrounding being affected/destroyed, that was off. Seriously. (the bad part).

^That's what I thought about the first quarter, unfortunately, it only goes downhill from then on. For a book of this size, it was oddly intense. The wrong kind.
The kind where you think you're reading a mid-series book rather than the first.
Like "The Occurrence" for example. I get it was some kind of a coming out-ish event but that's just me. Nothing, not a word, was explained about it.

And the characters. I liked Wesley well enough but Dakota?
No. Just no.
She was all wrong.
For a woman who's spent her entire life amidst pages of one book or the other, she should not, could not, be that smooth with the opposite gender. Don't get me wrong, nerds can have some mad skills but she never even had friends, you gettin' me? And the,
“Why do all the boys have only eyes for you?”
“Normally, it’s because I don’t have eyes for them.” Dakota knew when a man wanted her only because he thought she would be a challenge, not because he enjoyed who she really was. Most of them looked at her like that. She was the brainy girl, more concerned with her studies than with boys or sex. Guys often saw it as a personal achievement if they could pull her attention from her studies for a night.

Yeah... No. That's not how it goes.
And that was only one of the things wrong with her. Believe you me, I can make a list!

Sorry

The premise is great, and I was really excited, but WOW is this a bad story. I couldn't even begin to read the bonus material. I felt like I was reading something a middle school kid would write.

The freshman effort

Dakota is off abroad to Bangor University to study art history and Welsh art and architecture with a stern warning from her mother Bea, to avoid the dragons that live in the Snowdonia (could the name be any sillier?) territories. Her mother has gone as far as to buy her a book titled “Dragon Men and Their Urges”, which included chapters on self-defense and escape should one run into one of the dragons. Oh boy…

The title gives this tale away and the plot, although pretty silly and predictably obvious, still had a small chance of being somewhat entertaining. Of course Dakota, fresh off the plane and a neophyte runs into a dragon, Wesley of the red dragons, while off by herself sketching. Of course Wesley, in dragon form, is terribly smitten with Dakota and tries to gain her affection by showing off his cat-like, playful behavior (dragons behaving like cats—that’s interesting). Dakota tries, unsuccessfully to ignore the dragon because she is there to “study” and has worked so hard (we’re reminded how hard she’s worked throughout this tale) for this opportunity to study abroad and will not be led astray and must heed her mother’s warning you know. As if…

Fast forward to sometime in the immediate future (more than a day but less than a week) and Dakota finds herself in a dangerous situation and Wesley, in human form, swoops in to save the damsel in distress. Dakota and Wesley share an uneventful night together and boring story short, they wind up together. Shocker…

There was a content warning that this book contained lots of sexy shifter action. Intended for mature audience only. I tend to disagree with the disclaimer. This story lacked any form of action. All of the supposed sexy shifter action is pretty clinical and virginally written. The story lacks focus with poorly developed characters. The devil is in the details and the details are sketchy at best. The most infuriating aspect of this story—the editing is HORRIBLE!

Not the best freshman effort but hopefully it will improve with the next story. On my Were Scale of Hotness, 2 stars.

I received a copy of this book directly from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I thoroughly enjoyed Mated to the Dragon by Emilia Hartley. The book was fast-paced, fun, sexy, and held just a bit of danger. The writing was easy to follow and sink into, and the characters were fun and approachable. If anything, my one and only complaint is that I wish the book was deeper. I wanted more backstory to sink into at the beginning. I wanted the story to go on longer, the danger to be more present. The story was short, but I really wanted it to be meatier.

That being said, it was still a fun little romance – and I enjoyed the out-in-the-open aspect of the dragons in the world building. Usually, in books like this, the more supernatural aspects of the plot are hidden from the general public by a veil of secrecy. It was nice to find a story where something so ancient and magically was right at the forefront and accepted by the modern age.

If you’re looking for a quick, fun paranormal read with dragons, this is the story for you. I recommend you give it a try.

Dakota grew up poor and worked her butt off to get into a study abroad program and she plans on stating focused. Of course, the fact that she is in dragon territory makes her a little nervous. Wes is a lonely dragon who has become bored with the status of his life. When he meets Dakota, his mate, he hopes that things will change...if he could only get her to trust him.

I struggled through about half of this. The story wasn't too bad even though I wished there was a little bit more background....the problem was Dakota. She was such a bitch. And you would think that someone who had such "humble" beginnings would actually be humble. Instead she just had a nasty attitude about everyone around her and thought very highly of herself. When she started her "woes me" spiel about being an old maid, it was just the last straw.

Dakota has always been warned that the dragons are brutal and only care about themselves. Wesley longs for a mate, but knows the chances are slim of finding one. One meddling mother changes both of their lives. Will Dakota be able to see past the rumors to the facts? Will Wes be able to rescue Dakota before it is to late?

Good quick read! Loved how determined Dakota was, but she wasn't going to let what people told her go past what she saw. Wes was a complete sweetheart in his need to take care of her and prove her wrong regardless of their relationship status. Definitely cannot wait to see what comes next for the Red Dragons!

For some odd reason just the beginning of the book kind of upset me and I couldn't read it. A girl goes off to another school and is told that if she even has any contact with any of the dragons she will be sent home. Her first field trip and all she sees is a dragon in the sky doing flips and all kinds of tricks. I read as much of it is I could got bored with it and I do read a lot of books and it takes a lot to keep me interested in this might've got better but I would've had to skip half the book to get to it I think so I gave up on the book.

I fell in love with Ruby Dixon's dragon books and this series was TOTALLY UP THERE WITH THOSE!!!!! I fell so head over heels with these dragons I just couldn't contain myself. Wesley is just plain adorable. I love how playful he was when he first met Dakota. He was in his dragon form and trying to get her to laugh...I mean...can you get any more cuter than that. He was totally pea cocking!!!! Freaking loved it. I love the pull he has towards his mate and the anger and passion he feels when she is in danger. I really cant wait to keep reading this series and I hope it never ends.

lackluster at best. the heroine was not for me. the hero was nice enough, but the heroine had so many mixed messages/thoughts (are you this or are you that?) and the heroine did not give a full HEA just "lets give this a chance". due to that will be dropping this series and may check out other books by the authors if i come across them(free on amazon unlimited), will not actively go looking.

sum it up in one word: unfortunate.

A sweet romantic story

A sweet romantic story this is, but it leaves out the details of why there is conflict with the GOE group. The story begins with a college student that has put everything into studying abroad. Once she is accepted, everything seems right with her world. Then she sees a dragon flying in the sky. . . . Read On!

Great quick read

Really liked the story line and that it was a slightly different take on dragon shifts. It's nice to find something in the genre that's a bit different. Loved the characters and how they meet.

This was a pretty good story, with a sweet H and a singleminded h. There were a few times I wanted to smack the h, but it wasn't so bad I had to take a break from the book. I quite liked the H's parents! This was a bonus book in another book that I read.

sexy tale of Dakota a girl who has worked very hard to go to Bangor University in Wales. She want to study Art History. The college has one important rule! DO not mix with the dragon that live in Snowdonia. Dragon shifters now live with humans since the Occurrence. Even though some say they are harmless, they just want to live their own lives without any trouble (of course there are a few rogues who like to cause trouble). The University and some humans disagree. They do not want any mixing going on. Well Dakota meets a dragon shifter and Wesley is instantly attractive. She ignores him and he won't take no for answer since his dragon half claims her for his mate. Now Wesley is fighting his dragon half at every turn. Dakota thinks Wesley is nice but wait until she learns he is the dragon she has been ignoring (because she doesn't want to get expelled). Trouble happens and Wesley saves Dakota and of course mates with her. She then learns who he is and must figure what she is going to do!

Love this shifter book. The characters are wonderful. Wes is gorgeous as a human and red dragon, and Dakota is a college student studying abroad who doesn't want anything to risk her education. Wes realizes that Dakota is his mate but will she accept him when she finds out he;'s a dragon. Will she have to give up her education to be with him! You need to read this book to find out. It's a wonderful storyline and very enjoyable read.
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book.
