Rate this book
Her mother used to say you can feel the truth in your throat. Maybe when her story is finally told, she'll be able to breathe again.

For six years, Holly has lived a reclusive life--with the Chesapeake Bay, the wild animals on her property, and dark memories as her only companions. Then she meets Cade. He's smart and handsome and sensitive and sexy, and he simply will not go away. He wants to know all about her, and Holly starts to wonder if she can open up her heart again.

Cade comes back to his hometown for a break, barely holding on to the fraying edges of his true-crime writing career. He needs to write another book, and it needs to be a success. When he meets Holly, he knows there's a great story hiding beneath her haunting beauty and her complete isolation. He's going to be the one to tell that story.

Even if he breaks both of their hearts in the process.

This book held me captivated. The author did such a good job of feeding us just enough information that piqued my interest. I just couldn't read fast enough to learn all the little pieces she dangled in front of me to get to the full story. This had me imagining all kinds of scenarios until the truth came out.

This is a very, slow burn romance with an unusual heroine that was shaped by her upbringing. You could feel there was something heavy in her past and I think that’s why her unusual behavior seemed expected.

The hero’s growth was unexpected to see. You assume he’s the one bringing the heroine out of her shell, but she did that for him just as much. I like that this wasn’t one sided.

I've read other books by Noelle Adams and this wasn't like those I've read. I like when an author can deviate from their usual and still bring a good story.

ReRead review:

I’d forgotten how unique this story is. It’s got such a great feel to it with the location and atmosphere as much a part of the story as the characters. Even though I remembered the main points, I was anxious as the story wound down and the end approached. I was still taken with both Cade and Holly and actually found myself enjoying this more this time than the original reading.

Original review:

I am accustomed to reading Ms. Adams’ lighthearted and fun books so this one took me by surprise. It has a much deeper, darker feel to it and deals with heavy issues.

Chesapeake Bay Beaches - Find a spot to enjoy the Bay

Holly is a recluse and must live her life on a tight schedule despite the fact that she is isolated from society in every way. Living off the grid she finds comfort in the land, ocean and animals that surround her home. Cade is a writer who is struggling to maintain his success but failing. When he meets Holly he is intrigued by the mystery that shadows her. As a true crime writer he sets out to solve the questions around Holly and hopefully find a next bestseller in the process.

White-tailed Deer | Chesapeake Bay Program

Through most of this book I was on pins and needles waiting for Holly’s secret to be revealed. There were portions of this story that had a dark and heavy feel to it. It built the anticipation higher and higher until I wanted to skip ahead just to learn the secret.

For someone who lives under the shadow of a terrible incident and the resulting consequences of that incident, Holly was able to see life through innocent eyes. What others took for granted she honored with her every breath. It’s a beautiful tale.

I could see the subtle changes in Cade as he is drawn further and further into Holly’s life on the bay. However, it takes a confrontation between the hero and heroine before he is able to let go of his own insecurities and embrace the person he has always been and always meant to be.

***THREE STARS***
I truly adore this author, and have been smitten with all her other stories I've read before this one. This story was decent enough, but it didn't suck me in like her others have done. I was curious to discover Holly's secrets, but it took forever to get there. I really had to push myself to trudge through this story, and I never felt truly connected to Holly or Cade. Not a bad story, but a tiny bit tedious of a read.

Three and a half stars.

This was slightly odd, definitely nothing like the previous books I have read by Noelle Adams.

Holly lives like a hermit in the woods in a rundown shack. Her life is bound by a strict schedule and she avoids other people, most of the people in Cape Charles, Virginia don't even know she exists. Think a Disney cartoon type heroine communing with the little woodland creatures, slightly fey and slightly OCD.

Cade Chesterton grew up in Cape Charles but moved to Manhatten when he became a successful author with his true crime books. Unfortunately his books have each been less successful than the last and he has returned home to lick his wounds and write the latest book. He doesn't really understand why his books aren't more successful when he follows the same formula for each one.

When Cade sees Holly he is intrigued, even more so by the rumours about her mother and their lives together alone, he decides that there is a story and that he will get closer to Holly and write a book. Cade realises that Holly is easily spooked so he moves slowly, renting the cottage on the edge of Holly's land and keeping to himself. But as Cade uncovers Holly's secrets she is also helping him to see the world differently and rediscover his mojo (for want of a better word).

I liked this, I can see it working better as a movie TBH, it was gently suspenseful and strange.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

Holly being nervous around other people is an understatement. She doesn’t mind them living their own lives in their world, as long as they leave her alone in hers. Even talking to other people is difficult. One might say that she was skittish even. Holly is only 24 but she has deep dark secrets that keep her separated from other people for fear they will discover them. She lives in splendid isolation in a home on a huge piece of land that abuts the bay with a wooded area as well. She sees this land as her own private oasis and only goes to town when she really has to.

Cade is a writer whose last book was considered a flop and he is under pressure to write another best seller. He takes some time off from his life in busy New York City and comes to his hometown of Cape Charles to try and find inspiration for the next book that he was contracted to write. He’s in his 30’s and worries that if the next book isn’t as successful as his earlier books his career as a true life crime writer will be over. When then he stumbled onto the attractive Miss Holly and determines that there is a story to tell there and he is going to find and write about it.

From two different points of view, we read the story of how Cade woes Holly into a friendship that develops into something more. We read as he slowly wins her trust and becomes a part of her life. She is defensive at first and then gradually allows him to be a part of her world. It’s not all smooth sailing and the friendship profoundly changes the world for both of them. The story takes place over the course of a month and is an evenly paced story to follow.

The only real negative in this story that seems glaringly obvious is that it is almost unbelievable that Holly, having kept secrets all her life, would suddenly change her ways and trust Cade so easily and so quickly. But that would go against the nature of romantic fiction, so we shan’t dwell on that too much. There are also some explicit sexual scenes. There is far more explicit scenes written in other books than this one, but there are clear sexual content that might make some readers shy away.

This is a romantic novel through and through, but it is willing to explore deeper issues such as the effects on a woman after being raped and it looks at what isolation from the world can do to a person. It explores morality and choices, and whether it’s right or wrong to keep secrets. This is no easy breezy soft novel for you to simply wander through. Rather is keeps you guessing as to the motivation of Holly’s mother to leave her at such a young age. It is slightly darker than a classic love story with a good bit of underlying mystery thrown in, but that’s what makes it so appealing; it’s much more than your typical romance novel.

An Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book was received free via Netgalley for an honest review.

Adams is an author I read a lot. Though I have consistently liked her books when I get them from Amazon, I have struggled with the books I have gotten through Netgalley. As a result, Bay Song was a bit of a surprise. It is quite out of the norm for Adams in that it is considerably darker than anything I have read by her.

But that darkness is one of the reasons I liked it. Another reason I liked it (I was predisposed, I suppose) is that it takes place on the Chesapeake Bay, a familiar landscape. I also liked it because Holly and Cade's non-relationship relationship is depicted so well.

I loved the addition of the mystery in this book. Holly - so isolated, alone, and afraid - has been on her own since age 18 when her mother left. She has carved out a small but workable life for herself in this small bayside community, traveling to town once a week to take care of anything she must before returning home. She has a regimented life, carefully protecting herself and her secrets. And those secrets haunt her and govern so much of her behavior.

Enter Cade. He's struggling with his writing career and scenting secrets all around Holly, he wants to learn them so he can save his career. But in the time it takes to win Holly's trust, Cade loses his heart to her. He's not some "good guy". He's an opportunist who wants to go home to his New York apartment and get on with his high falutin' writing career.

But the Bay works in mysterious ways, capturing both Holly and Cade in its spell and with it's song, opening and closing doors for both of them. "Can you hear the song?" Holly asks Cade so innocently and at that moment, he could not. For Holly, each step into the world is frightening because it takes her closer and closer to revealing her secrets. For Cade, each step closer to Holly is torture because he already knows some of those secrets and their reveal can only hurt her.

In an almost lyrical and haunting story, Adams breaks out of her sweet and cute reputation and delivers a deeply emotional and wonderfully frightful book. I loved it and am looking forward to seeing more in this vein from her.

In Bay Song, Noelle Adams once again delivers a story that will amaze readers with both the simplicity and complexity of its plot. The characters of both Holly and Cade are as multilayered and deep as one can get. It is also presented in a way that readers feel like its unwrapping layers of their personality without too much details being revealed to bog down the story. The same way goes with the main plot, which is so intertwined into the romance that its become an integral part of the story. Bay Song is exquisite, it is being in the moment, being true to oneself, revealing a part of yourself, becoming one. Holly and Cade are flawed, human and in the end true to oneself and to each other. Beautifully written and so worth the time to read it.

DNF at 37%.

Noelle Adams tried a different style with this novel. It's a far cry from her usual novella full of lovely feelings and all the little hints from the heroine's point of view how the hero feels about her.

This one alternates between the hero and heroine getting to know each other and their POVs.

This book just dragged for me. Eventually I realized that I didn't like the hero or the heroine, that the boring ass repetitious meeting up with no progression between them was tedious, and that the lure of discovering the heroine's secret was no longer enough to keep me going.

So disappointed.

ARC Review: Bay Song by Noelle Adams

Bay Song digs deeper into the human psyche and creates a tale of morality, redemption and a haunting journey of hope and healing. As thought provoking as it is emotionally draining, I never lost hope in the central characters. Holly started out as a curiosity. Her existence is one of mystery, but pain permeates off her in droves. Cade has never met a puzzle he can't solve, but Holly may be the one mystery that he wishes he hasn't. Holly's story is one of strength and courage that inspires every sense that makes us human.

Interesting writing style change for this writer. An interesting diversion from the usual sweet, warm, breezy and comfort books usually written by Noelle.

This book has mystery, has a recluse for a heroine and a crime writer for hero. Un-conventional choice of hero and heroine, and amazingly Noelle made it work.

A well written book, I enjoyed it, however it is not the usual comfort easy reads that expect form Noelle. This book is a little dark and more intense than the usual Noelle style. Still enjoyable, but not my favorite book by this author.

I was given this ARC by NetGalley for an honest review. I can honestly say that I loved it and I was hooked from the very beginning. Just trying to figure out Holly's story and then trying to find out what really happened to her mother just hooks you right in and makes you not want to put the book down. As the truth starts to unravel you can't help but feel sorry for Holly and at the same time admire her for her bravery. I am just happy that throughout her self discovery Holly had Cade to help her and give her the extra confidence boost she needed to be the person she was meant to be. At the same time Holly was able to teach Cade how to step back, relax and enjoy lives simple little things. A must read.

I'm struggling to get into this one and I have a bad feeling about whatever is going on with Holly's mom and how it will be handled. Turns out, I was right: I would proceed with caution if you're sensitive to depictions of . I also didn't like how Cade basically stalks Holly and rents the place next door to get closer to her in his quest to get a story for his next true crime book. Yikes.

Characters: Holly is a 24 year old white recluse. Cade is a white true crime author. This is set in Cape Charles, VA.

Content notes: agoraphobia, stalking by MMC (including renting a place next door to get closer to her), FMC's mother left six years ago , FMC's mother became pregnant with her after she was raped, lacerations, medical neglect (FMC doesn't ever go to doctor or dentist), animal corpse, alcohol, gender essentialist language

It was nice to see Adams trying out a darker writing style as compared to her other more lighthearted stories. SALVATION was of a similar vein and I absolutely loved that story, so I was looking forward to BAY SONG once I realized the style difference.

For some reason though I wasn't able to connect to these characters the way I did to the ones of SALVATION. I couldn't get in to their mindsets and just never connected with their stories. I felt bored most of the time and not 100% in to the crime backstory. I truly didn't understand Holly and how she interacted with people in her late teens to then nobody, yet spoke with Cade fairly easily. The patterns of her life were confusing and didn't always match up.

Cade on the other hand undergoes all these changes but I'm not really sure why. His character development just seems to happen without anything (besides his attraction to Holly) truly driving it. Not enough of his internal thoughts are shared to help us understand his motivations.

The title really wasn't something so interesting, but the blurb was. Something about silence that speaks so much louder.

A girl waiting and needing for her story to be told. A boy who needs a story to make his life something more than just the superficial happiness. From a small town where secrets aren't likely to be kept, they both find their voices in each other.

Holly isn't just a quiet type of person; she's reserved for a number of reasons, and it's her way to keep things as they are. Cade is a writer, and mystery is something that has always excited him. He knows no such girl can live that way with no story to tell, and he's not above using his charms to penetrate and disintegrate the walls Holly worked hard on. What the both of them didn't anticipate was that there are things that will make them change their minds about things. There are other things to consider more than their pasts.

This was actually disappointing for me. I've read a lot of Noelle Adams's books and if I remember right I really enjoyed all of them. Bay Song just felt very disconnected and at times boring. I had a lot of trouble getting into it and it never picked up enough that I felt the normal urgency to find out what was going on. I liked the characters but I don't feel like enough time passed for them to make the progress they did considering the circumstances. I think what lost me from the start was the POV, I'm not a fan of this style at all and it just doesn't feel like it flows right. Overall it was a decent story, a very well thought out plot but I just felt like at times it was too drug to feel connected and then the relationship moved too quickly especially added to all that Holly had to overcome at the same time.

Holly was a recluse, avid reader and alone. She didn’t socialize, didn’t work, and loved her peaceful beach front property near the woods. She also had secrets.

Cade is a successful writer, in his mid thirties, looking for his muse. Holly is it, but he doesn’t want to spook her or drive her away especially since he’s also attracted to her.

Through patience Cade becomes the only person who Holly socializes with, and is comfortable with the physical attraction as long as it stays within certain borders. Same with getting to know one another. She doesn’t want to share her secrets, he doesn’t want to share his work- even though she’s read his work- or his motivations.

This story is calm, beautiful, poetic as well as sad and tragic. A hit of mental health, and fear with a dose of romance and steam.

Hard to get into

Of all the Noelle Adams books this one I struggled with the most
I found the story line to be quite slow but by the time the book ended it still left a lot of questions unanswered...I felt like it needed an epilogue to tie up the loose ends.....I.e how did Cades next book get on, what did Holly study at college....did they end up happily ever after....

I'll be honest this is not a book I would read again, I struggled with the characters, found the story very hard going & at times I was just plain bored.

For me it lacked the Noelles usual engaging writing style.

This is not a usual cute Noelle Adams story, darker than her other books.

There is a little crime in the story, but the focus is rather on the psychical effects. How does open up a girl who lived all her life off, who has never let anyone into her house, her life, her soul, whose means great courage for every step what is natural to another person, and who despite all this can show something new for another man – Cade – such as how to enjoy the beauty of the moment.

Great and emotional writing from the author as always. Very liked it.

This book dragged a little too long for me. I lost patience with the Heroine couple of times. She needs some serious therapy. The animal part was weird to me, as a reviewer previously stated too Disneyesque.

The author really worked the build up nicely, to the point that I was like get over it already. I had already figured out, and I believe most readers would as well. So when it is revealed, you're like "Boy, this girl needs some serious help, people". This one was a 3 stars for me, but someone else may enjoy it.

This book shows Ms. Adams range as an author as she strays away from her usual routine. This book has a depth to it because it is dealing with the main character Holly as she isolates herself due to her upbringing after her mother suffered from some trauma before her birth. This resulted in her instilling the need or fear to stay safe in her daughter. She finds comfort in the creatures who live on her property and in the routine she keeps to rather faithfully.

I truly enjoyed this book. I found it uniquely refreshing. There were a few plot points that I found to be predictable but with most stories we all have things that we expect to occur as it follows certain set plot lines.

I liked this slow burn romance between a reclusive young woman and a writer struggling with ideas for his next book. It was well written, but I did think the longer length made it drag - although it had to be longer, because the H/h's story was complicated. I found it easy to put down because of this. 3.5 stars.

The first book that I didn't enjoy quite as much as all the others.
I just couldn't get into it, I think.
The characteres annoyed me at some point and the story wasn't as captivating as I thought. Finishing it was not very satisfying either.

It is still a good story but not the best.

This book grabbed at my heartstrings...

Holly was not dealt the easiest hand in life, she didn't know how to interact and she kept to herself. There were so many questions I had and slowly they story unraveled the answers. Cade did what he had to, what he has done in the past for his stories, he just got caught up in the intrigue that was Holly. I loved watching their friendship grow.

The best thing about this story for me was the twists ~ you never know why people do the things do or act a certain way until you get the WHOLE story.

This was a very good book - if you like a little mystery with your romance this is definitely one to read.
