Nikki's been to the deepest pit of darkness in the universe and lived to tell about it, barely. But, to move forward with her life, she must first go back to Thetos - where a buried secret and her father's promise await her return. Despite her independent, defensive nature, she lets Brom into her world and under her skin bit by bit. With her Trexen biology clawing its way into fruition, including unwanted side effects like mind-reading and a deadly temper, she struggles to see herself as worthy of her father's intellectual legacy. The more she reveals to Brom, the faster she expects him to leave. She quickly learns Orellians don't give up so easily, and Brom's as stubborn as they come.
But someone's been waiting for Nikki's return and the secret she guards. Its discovery could mean a chance at peace, or lead to all out war. In the wrong hands, even the best intentions can lead to catastrophe, and a promise can decay into regret.
C.E. Kilgore (1981 - ) is an author without genre, who likes to dabble in several genres from romance to science fiction. She also enjoys pushing the boundaries of those genres, trying new things, venturing outside formulas and turning tropes on their heads. Admittedly a control freak, she is currently a self-published author under the name Tracing The Stars, and hasn't quite found the publisher who fits all her quirks. What I liked: A wounded but feisty won't-stop-for-nothing heroine in search of information that can change the universe, and a steady, strong and sensitive hero prepared to do anything to keep her safe and win her broken heart on her terms. Add to that a colourful cast of secondary characters, action, adventure, tension both plotwise and sexual, all set against a fully fledged scifi setting, and it gets an unreserved 5 star rating from me!
What I didn't like: Zero. Zip. Zilch. This was perfect!
In conclusion: Space opera fans who don't mind a few well written sex scenes in their scifi will love this. For anyone who likes ST, Firefly and Farscape, and/or even just a damn good adventure story with snogging.
Engaging sci fi soap opera with intrigue and danger
No plot spoilers No potential triggers The characterisation is good. This is Brom and Nikki's story. It's shorter than previous books but just as engaging. The plotline is a continuation from previous books, I don't think any of the books in the series can be read as a standalone so you would need to start at the beginning. Good news is the first two are free and the rest reasonably priced. Bad news is that this, the fifth book, leaves us with the promise that the next book will be released soon. However, it's been some time since this book was released and there is no sign of further instalments. The errors are still very much evident, and still very much irritating. If you are a fan of the genre I have no problem recommending the series, and even if you are not into sci fi I would still say take a chance. There are a couple of sex scenes lightly written and some swearing.
Initially the “Corwint Central Agent Files” books were simply fun, enjoyable reads. But as one moves through the series, especially following the recommended order, a much “deeper”, more intriguing story arc is revealed. The author’s writing and story telling style for this series is a perfect way to develop and build each character and create incredible depth, and an ability to relate to nearly character, or if not personally relate, to truly understand the characters. I hope the next books bring more of the characters together in a departure from what has been done up to this point, but if not, it won’t matter. I anxiously await the next release!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED AS BOTH AN INDIVIDUAL BOOK AND AS A SERIES
Make no mistake, this is not a space opera to appeal to 14 year olds. This is an ADULT, CROSS GENRE, SPACE OPERA, with HARD SCIENCE, CURRENT THEORETICAL CONCEPTS, ROMANCE, & LOVE & SEX.
It is a high concept story, with a breadth few authors would attempt, but Kilgore has accomplished with vigor.
