Laced In Lies

Rate this book
There are times when a satisfying lie is better than the awful truth.

Meet Shelby Nichols, mind reader extraordinaire. Working for a mob boss, helping the police expose a violent drug ring, and running her own consulting agency can get complicated, especially considering she has a husband and two kids. Keeping her mind reading skills a secret is even harder, and involves telling lies that can get her in more trouble she likes to admit. Then there’s Ramos, a hitman with a past who comes knocking at her door with troubles of his own. Of course, facing death has a way of putting things into perspective, if only she can stay alive long enough to appreciate it...

I became a a fan of Shelby, oh, who am I kidding, of Ramos, after the first couple of books. I read all thus far. Some I really enjoyed, some were ok, and this falls back into the okay side for me. I am very critical, and decided, what really makes a good book review, so I wanted to take everything into consideration.

So these novels continue with the same formula, Shelby doing a favor, a job, and surprise, she gets into trouble, and surprise Ramos rescues her - perhaps my tastes are changing. I gave it the "I Liked It/3 star" vs "It's OK/2 star" because I have loved the earlier books.

Like the title suggest, the lies continues for Shelby. This book had 2 main stories happening, and by reading the bio, you would think this is about Ramos, honestly, the only reason I purchased (cause I felt the same way about this, as I did her last book), but the book takes a turn, and more than half the book is about Miguel & Shelby.

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

So Ramos' past comes back, and Shelby wants to help, Uncle Joey feels Ramos needs Shelby's help and he asks her to spy on Ramos, which of course doesn't work, but when Shelby helps Ramos that 1 time, he wants t handle this alone, and off to NYC goes Shelby with Miguel. This is were more than 1/2 the book is centered about Miguel's audition, and honestly, I felt it was a big commercial for Aladdin. The way Shelby read the director's mind, and how a new lead would bring people back to see the play - and as a play lover - never would I imagine this 'thought' process, other than marketing for a play. Hence I felt it was an advertisement for Aladdin. Oh, and there are a TON of lies happening in NYC. Honestly, I lost track of the lies, and really who was lying to who, and the main lie on Shelby's identity, was a bit much, and it just felt awkward (to me) vs funny.

So now we're at 75% and back to Ramos. This author can, and has wrapped up a story in a page or 2, and I felt that was going to happen. I felt there was no way the level of detail for the Aladdin story line would be involved for Ramos, and it didn't. There's are 2 obvious cliff hangers, so not sure if that will be the storylines involved in the next book.

What I guess has had me eye rolling a bit, and perhaps making this my last purchase is the same true formula of the story . Shelby is torn between lying, but she continues to be lusting after Ramos. Trust me, I have no moral compass, and I'm not saying they should have an affair, but it's getting old. The other eye roll is she always finds herself in a predicament that Ramos has to save her from. Ok, we're beating to death the damsel in distress. This book mentioned she was a level 5 in her karate, whatever she's doing, so I thought, ok, that will come into play, and nope. She continues to be clueless. Then her stun flashlight. I mean, if you were shot at twice now, kidnapped/taken every single job you go do, perhaps you'd want to protect yourself a little better than a stun flashlight & always calling Ramos. Honestly, the part where she was taken this time, and she's struggling for her cell, to go to contacts, find Ramos, vs dialing 9-1-1. I get the hero thing, and again, LOVE Ramos, but honestly, I'm getting a we bit frustrated with Shelby's ineptness in protecting herself.

It was delightful to read another Shelby escapade. In this one, Shelby is helping 'Dimples' in a situation involving drugs. Uncle Joey sends her to New York city along with Miguel as he wants to know Miguel's chances of making as a music star. There are Manetto relatives in New York from which he is estranged. Ramos' past has come back to haunt t him. Life has become complicated for Shelby as Josh and Savannah are older and begin to question the relationship with Uncle Joey. Three different elements are pulled together into the story. These series have become a must read. I highly recommend this book and series.

So glad Shelby's back!

Always good to catch up with Shelby, Ramos, Uncle Joey, Chris, and Dimples! As if reading minds isn't a big enough life complication Shelby is juggling working for herself, the mob, and the local police-while trying to be a good wife and mother. Great light reading, some of the situations she gets into have me laughing out loud. One of my favorite series it just keeps getting better.

Colleen is amazing at writing the characters so I love them and I'm drawn into every moment with them. There is something with each scene that keeps me listening to the words. Shelby has amazing chemistry with everyone she meets. Awesome job!

I absolutely love these books and will continue with Shelby and all the characters as long as there are books written!

****FULL REVIEW****
*I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Shelby's life is always full with the kids and her work as a consultant for Uncle Joey and the police. Her clients cross when she takes a job to follow a friends husband, and ends up in a bar of a gang that's got an amicable deal with Uncle Joey. She calls for help from Ramos, and afterward finds out Ramos has something going on he doesn't want her involved in, but ultimately needs her skills to help him. Uncle Joey meets her family and wants Shelby to go with his son, Miguel, to New York for his audition in a Broadway musical.

Wow. Wendy is one amazing voice actor. She gives Shelby the full feel of a person. I love the lightness to Shelby yet the complete package that she's well aware of what's happening around her is not good (when in trouble). When Wendy slips into Shelby's persona I feel like I'm watching Shelby as she goes through her day and stumbles into troubles. A wonderful combination of Colleen's writing and Wendy's voice makes me giggle in the right moments and feel the excitement in Shelby. Wonderful job.

Shelby is amazing at getting into trouble. But the best part is, even through she's nervous, she works her way out with quick thoughts. She does have a small consulting business of her own and helps with the cops on special cases, and these sometimes cross into the life that's including Uncle Joey. But if Shelby ever gets in trouble she can call on Ramos for help, and she does.

Goodness! Ramos. He's amazing. If you love dark, sexy men you'll love Ramos. I love the time Shelby and him spend together. They tease each other so well, and mean some of what they say. lol. Harmless flirting...maybe? Sometimes I wonder if Ramos doesn't have his own dose of reading minds ability. He's great at knowing and reading people, and finding them in a crowd. He even makes me smile when that all is focused on Shelby. Oh, Shelby is amazing with her husband too. He's different from Ramos, yet just as sexy. I really love both men when Shelby is with them.

Being part of the family with Uncle Joey is growing to a new level for Shelby with her husband and kids. All starting with the family barbecue that they agreed to when at Miguel's musical. Things have really grown with Uncle Joey personally. This leads us to get to spend time with Miguel, which is really nice. The family feel really comes through strong. There are ties that are reconnected and ties that grow to bring a big family feel to the whole story.

Wonderful story line

Shelby continues to get into trouble without even looking for it. She does have a great trip to New York with Miguel and meets some of Joe's relatives. Back
at home, she helps Ramos with a meeting of an old girlfriend. Things get complicated. The Plot moves quickly, but does have enough description. I really liked the segment at the old Hotel in New York. I bet another story will take place, ace there and the singing ghost is sure to be returning. This is a five star read and I liked how we learn more about Joe's extended family.

A lot of little things happening that converge into a explosive ending.

First Shelby is trying to help a old school friend and of course gets into a sticky situation. Ramos to the rescue.

Uncle Joey needs her to accompany Miguel to New York for a Broadway audition and she meets some of Uncle Joey's long lost family. Lots of secrets are exposed and brought to light.

Dimples needs help with a drug case and his personal life.

Ramos needs help but won't admit it or accept any help when offered. Secrets of his past are revealed that make you love him even more.

Colleen Helme weaves all these little background stories and others into a really exciting and surprise ending. And of course, leaves you on the edge of your seat in anticipation for the next book.

Several little things have been set into motion for the next book and I can't wait to see how it all plays out.

As always a exciting, funny, nail biting, laugh out loud, thoughtful and leaves you wanting more story. Well done.

I loved this book. As usual trouble has a way of finding Shelby Nichols and she manages to barely escape. This book was actually two stories - one about Miguel and the other about a drug dealer. Shelby was involved in both, but the first story was fluff. It was well written and I thoroughly enjoyed it but it wasn't action or adventure or "who done it?" Miguel is the son of Joey Mannetto and he's invited to New York to audition for the part of Aladdin in a Broadway play. For kicks we're introduced to the New York Manettos and given a little backstory about the family. But the second half of the book is typical Shelby Nichols adventures with her reading minds and getting involved in stuff she should run away from. All ends well with Shelby sustaining a few minor injuries. I enjoy all of the Shelby Nichols adventures and this was no exception. I recommend to everyone who enjoys this genre.

Great read!

I enjoy reading about Shelby's mishaps and how she balances good and evil and her justifications for her actions. The strong attraction for Ramos, and even stronger bond with her family. Great adventures, and page turning interest in the story line and characters.

I have diligently read all Shelby Nichols-books and I did buy this one (number 10 already!). BUT.. I can't get myself to start reading it and I think this is the end of the line for me.

Shelby is married, Ramos is forever a guilty pleasure (and she is married to great guy Chris for crying out loud) and there never will be any change in that. I don't like triangles and this triangle will never be solved.

I do like the author's writing and I wish she would write a new series about someone as hot as Ramos who does get the girl.

Laced in Lies is the 10th volume of the Shelby Nichols adventures from Colleen Helme. And Oh my goodness! What a read and what a ride! Literally! In this newest adventure, Shelby has to help her devilishly handsome hitman friend Ramos, who works for Uncle Joey, the Mob Boss. In fact, we find out that an old flame of Ramos', Jody, is now a famous singer. Colleen actually had a song, "Devil Rider" professionally produced as a companion to the book, and it is the song that made Jody famous in the book, and it is about Ramos! Not only that, but it is really, really good, and after you listen to it a few times it is the type of song that starts running through your head!

Laced in Lies has a lot going on. Miguel, Uncle Joey's son, gets called to New York to audition for a broadway production. Shelby has to pose as a relative, as it turns out that there is a New York Manetto family too, and in fact Shelby meets Uncle Joey's long estranged sister.

Along the way are the usual adventures - or is it misadventures? That have made the Shelby Nichols adventures so much fun to read and such an edge of your seat got to find out what happens next roller coaster of a fun ride.

I have been with Shelby for about 7 years now, from when the first book in the series Carrots came out. Colleen has long been a very talented author, starting off years ago with books like Relic and Songbird, which are fantasy novels and exquisitely well written books.

While you can read the adventures in any order, the sophistication, style, and execution of Colleen's writing steadily improves through the series with her successes and her experience, so I do suggest if you are going to read them (hint: you should!) that you read them in order. This is also a good idea as the relationships and complexities of the characters grows and changes and matures throughout the series.

The cost will be forgotten long after the books are purchased and the memories of these books is such that Shelby starts to become as real as life to the reader, and before long you want to know what trouble your friend Shelby will be getting into next. This is a great family series, a great set of books to listen to while flying, driving or commuting, and just plain a great read for any time. I heartily endorse the audible versions of these books as well with narrator Wendy Tremont King, who to my way of thinking IS the voice of Shelby Nichols.

So, for a fast ride on a sleek motorcycle with a devilishly handsome man, a web of lies that gets ever more complicated and has to be resolved somehow, and more action than a John Wayne shooter, try Laced in Lies and the Shelby Nichols adventures. You'll be glad you did.

Aptly named title. Of course "half truths" isn't new territory for Shelby, but the amount of lies racked up in this Shelby Nichols adventure could cause anyone major whiplash for a lifetime. And notice there I didn't attribute these lies solely to Shelby. Even though she was the one doling out those staggering amount of lies, she was doing most of them on behalf of others and as always to protect her secret of hearing peoples thoughts. I decided to cut her some slack, because a lot of the trouble she found herself in this time, was just her being a good friend. Uncle Joey, mob boss extraordinaire was an even bigger cause for a lot of Shelby's troubles this time around, so I will put a lot of the blame on him. He's really digging her deeper into his world and I'm afraid of what's ahead for Shelby, and her family as well.

Speaking of trouble, it was really freaky how much she got herself into this time around and no kidding, all she did was just sit there and trouble found her. The phrase, "How does she do it" has a very different connotation when it comes to Shelby. Yes she juggles family and career like a pro, but how does she get herself kidnapped by gunpoint twice in one day, how does she get out of a getting busted in a huge lie, how does she get out of a scary situation with a dangerous gang, how many times is she going to get herself into embarrassing moments, and the list goes on. She does all this because she is total a badass, that's how. To get out of so many life threatening situations, one has to be badass, have a million and one lives and a guardian angel. Perhaps one who rides a motorcycle, is scorching hot and is all badassery and then-some, and they call him Ramos. He did come to her rescue a few times as per usual, but Shelby is getting better at saving herself. I was very proud of her a few times in this escapade.

Okay, so that was just me fangirling but I just love this series. It's a really fun, laugh out loud read every time, I'm always so pumped for the next book. I'm sorry to say this Shelby, but I am very happy you went to buy those carrots. Okay, so that was a lie, I'm not sorry, your bad luck has become my enjoyment. And now I await your next adventure in anxious anticipation.

Laced in Lies finds Shelby and company dealing with mobsters (of course!), Polynesian gangs, Ramos' old girlfriend ( who has a surprise), drug dealers, an audition for the starring role in Aladdin on Broadway and meeting the " family" she never knew existed!

A fast- paced mystery with three different mysteries that somehow blend together perfectly. Shelby's character worries about her family, her "familia" and most things everyday people worry over...except she also is concerned about her "gift" and how it will affect her family if the kids find out. The mystery, humor, romance, everyday life adventures as well as the trouble Shelby's "gift" gets her into always entertains. I love the Uncle Joey and Jackie characters, Ramos, Dimples and her husband Chris. I do wonder what's in store for the next book...questions were raised that will be hard to answer!

You don't have to start at the beginning, but it makes the boooks more entertaining! Enjoy!!

Some drastic changes this time

Shelby goes with Miguel to New York which brings about changes for everyone (no spoilers). Shelby finds herself in another life threatening situation. This time licks seems to be on her side more than Ramos. We learn a secret of Ramos ' past. I am completely hooked on this series.

How this books has 4.5 stars is beyond me. .. But I get there's a demographic for everything. Most cozy mysteries have an amateur sleuth who, well, sleuths. There was no sleuthing in this story. None at all. We start with kids dying due to tainted drugs, a figure from Ramo's past contacts him out of the blue, and lo and behold, he's doing something drug related. Then Shelby takes off to NY for half the book, and when she returns, she inadvertently finds herself in the middle of those peddling the tainted drugs. Instead of the sleuth slowly discovering clues, with the reader wondering whether the culprit is one person or another, the author just hands the culprit to the sleuth without any investigative effort at all. I guess this book is for people who don't like to think. The mystery was seriously lacking in mystery.

Aside from this, the girlish reactions of Shelby have become more than tiresome after 10 books and I'm wondering if the author uses it as filler due to lack of imagination or lack of original ideas. 10 books full of Shelby swooning or taking in "Ramos' scent" is enough. A grown woman acting like she's a teenager with out of control hormones and overall childish reactions gets a bit nauseating after 10 books. Not to mention that Shelby totally neglects her actual teenagers, who seem to behave more like an adult than her, and constantly lies to her husband, despite continuously vowing not to.

Despite Shelby taking martial arts classes several books ago, and finding herself in all sorts of danger, she appears incapable of 1) defending herself and 2) planning ahead. 10 books yet ZERO growth. Will this character ever grow up? Doesn't appear so.

About half of this book is about taking Joey's kid to New York to audition as Aladdin. No mystery there. Filler. Filler. Filler.

The entire "mystery" could have been written in a third of the pages. Disappointed. The best thing about this book is that I borrowed it on Kindle Unlimited, so I didn't actually waste money on it.

Outstanding, wonderful, awesome and Wow! Colleen Helme is an amazing author and Laced in Lies is a wonderful example of her talent.Shelby probably felt like she was riding a hot air balloon through a wind storm! And I was right there beside her the whole way! From emotional to thrilling to terrifying to humiliating she is pulled so many directions at once. I swear if it is possible my crush on Ramos got even bigger and I am sure hers did too as we discover just a bit more about his background.
A friend needs her help for a relative, Dimples needs her for a drug investigation and for his fiance, Uncle Joe needs her help for Miguel, her family need her attention, Ramos doesn't want to need her help but he does, and Chris's secretary needs to be reminded that he is taken.

I can not believe this is the 10th book in the series that started with Carrots. It is best adventure yet! And be sure to look for the song Colleen Helme write for this book, Devil Rider on YouTube. The link is on her FB page.

Every Story keeps you wanting for another adventure!!

These Shelby Nichols adventures are addicting. I love the main characters who story lines continue to always remain interesting. Shelby's stop at a grocery store in the first book changed her life. A bullet to to the side of her head during a robbery and now she has mind reading abilities. She has a an awfully understanding and patient husband Chris, who knows she can hear everyone's thoughts. Her daughter and son do not know about her ability to hear thoughts. Shelby has a hard time listening to her kids thoughts and not blurting a response out to their thought.

Uncle Joey, a mob boss, whose niece, Kate, worked with Chris, an attorney. Kate has the hots for him. Shelby is jealous and one day tellsKate she knows about her Uncle Joey and and what she is hiding. This puts her in front of Joe "The Knife" Minnetto. He wants to know how she knows the things she spoke to Kate about. This is when she has to prove to him she had no idea about what she said other that she picked it up from Kate's thoughts. Once she convinced Uncle Joey of her mind reading abilities he let her off the hook with one compromise. Shelby had to work for him when he needed her to make sure the men he was dealing with at his meetings were loyal and not double crossing him. She's not that happy about it not is her husband Chris but throughout the series you see how Shelby and her family have become like family to Uncle Joey. One of Uncle Joey's bodyguards, Ramos, becomes very fond of Shelby and she of him. Though she would never cheat on Chris, Ramos makes her heart pound wildly and she gets extremely flustered when they are to close to each other. Ramos has also become Shelby's knight in shining armor. He saves her life more times than he can count. Uncle Joey makes sure Shelby and her family are always safe.
The there is Detective Dee Harris (AKA Dimples). He thinks Shelby has preminitions and he calls her in to help him on difficult cases. Shelby sits in on interrogations and tells Dimples what questions to ask. Unbeknownst to him these questions make the criminal think the answers and give even more details in their minds which Shelby clearly hears. This is the easiest way to close a case and arrest the perpetrator.

(Written in July 2017 for my blog) I fell in love with the Shelby Nichols Adventure series by author Colleen Helme while recovering recently from an injured ankle. I had purchased a Kindle copy of the first book in the series, Carrots, quite awhile back on Amazon but had never gotten around to reading it. While looking for my next audiobook to listen to on Audible, Carrots was recommended to me and it showed that I could get the audiobook at a greatly reduced price since I already owned the Kindle version.

I am SO glad that I decided to buy the audio version. I quickly continued on through the series and was definitely binge-listening while recovering. I had gotten through the first 9 audiobooks during that time.

About a week ago, I got an offer to receive a copy of the Laced In Lies audiobook for free in exchange for an honest review, so here it is. Like I said, however, I did purchase the previous 9 audiobooks as well as the first book also in Kindle form. I am definitely looking forward to book 11. I cannot wait to see where this story goes from here.

Anyway, I totally recommend this whole series and suggest that you start at the beginning for the best experience.

Books of the Shelby Nichols Adventure series in order:
Carrots
Fast Money
Lie or Die
Secrets That Kill
Trapped By Revenge
Deep In Death
Crossing Danger
Devious Minds
Hidden Deception
Laced In Lies

How this Book is Different From the Rest of the Series:
Laced In Lies was a bit different from the other books in the series. While it still had the basic idea of Shelby being asked to help someone (either the police, the mob, or through her consulting agency), things going terribly wrong, and then her usually being saved by Ramos in the end… this book also was beefed up quite a bit with a lot more character development, several new characters to draw from in future adventures, and a major part of Ramos’ backstory. While I found this particular book to be a little slower than the others because of all of the previously mentioned development, I truly appreciated this new insight into Ramos as well as the expanded “family” we met.

Why I Love this Book and the Series:
This series is a cozy mystery series, which is my favorite genre. I appreciate the fact that it does not go into the gritty details of the intimate activities, the murders, or the other crimes. A lot is simply left for you to either imagine yourself (if that is your desire) or get right on to what I consider the good parts. 😉 To each his own, I guess. This is definitely my preference, though.

The premise (without really spoiling anything) is that something happens to Shelby in book one that causes her to be able to read people’s thoughts. This, as you can imagine, can cause a lot of problems in your life… especially if you have a tendency to accidentally let it slip from time to time and usually to the wrong people. Shelby is trying to use her new skill for good, but that usually lands her in some really bad situations.

Shelby is a lovable character who is down-to-earth and who most people would love to have as a friend, even though she seems to be a magnet for danger. I do wish that she would learn to protect herself a bit more in the future, though.

If you are a lover of books that have some amazing character development, then this series is for you. Shelby’s knack for getting into trouble and eventually out of it reminds me a lot of some of my other cozy mystery favorites: Odelia Grey Mysteries, Stephanie Plum (at least the earlier books), Davis Way Crime Capers, Malibu Mysteries, and the High Heels Mysteries. If you are a fan of any of those, you will surely be a fan of Shelby Nichols Adventures.

Along with also having several story lines that merge together in the end and give you the thrill of a quality mystery, it also always somehow works out in the end. It definitely says something if the readers find themselves rooting for the “bad guys”, too. At least the ones that Shelby is connected to: Ramos, Uncle Joey, and the rest of the crew.

Audiobook or in Print – Which Do I Recommend?
While it ultimately depends on your personal preference (audio or print), I honestly recommend the audiobooks because the narrator is amazing! She has quickly risen to the top my favorites. I could (and actually did while recovering) listen to Wendy Tremont King all day long. She really brings the characters to life and feels like you are listening to a movie or something.

So I just finished books 6-10 and once again decided to review them in a cluster since they are a easy read and pretty formulaic. So far Shelby has prevented a terrorist bombing in Paris, helped her friend find her missing niece, busted a drug ring, and as always, assisted Uncle Joey, the local mob boss in his dealings (and Ramos, too).

I still enjoy the series but now Shelby is starting to get on my nerves. She wound up working for the mob boss because when she wanted to check out her husband new female colleague in book one and she found out that said colleague wanted her husband so she plucked Uncle Joey’s name from her mind and used it to get the woman to back off. Now that she can reads minds it seems like every woman that works at her husband law firm wants him and it makes her jealous. We know that she trusts her husband but for some reason find these women a threat. SMH. I find her to be a little hypocritical since even though she would “never” cheat on her husband with her crush, the hot hit man Ramos, she is in some ways cheating on her husband emotionally, which i think is worse than physical. Every time she sniffs him, finds reasons to touch him, talk about him to her friends and even feed into his knowledge that she is attracted she’s cheating and if her husband ever found out he would not be too happy, since already feels threatened by Ramos. I’m not a prude at all but I know I wouldn’t like it. I feel like her attraction to Ramos is a lot stronger than her attraction to her husband. She calls her husband classically handsome, but it seems only when he is dressed for an occasion, but he’s not making hearts race, causing hot flashes, or deep blushes, which we constantly read when Ramos enters the picture, she even tries to see his naked chest when he comes out of the shower. To be honest I would rather read about a sexy marriage rather than a hit man crush. No amount of “oh baby, oh baby” is going make that marriage sexy. But my heart races every time I read “Babe”. Like I said in my previous review, I don’t like having my feelings divided.

Overall, still a fun series and I look forward to reading the rest of Shelbys adventures when I need a nice somewhat wholesome book in between my other reads.

I love the Shelby Nichols series. I truly do; however, "Laced in Lies" was my least favorite book in the series to date. This read was much more contemplative and self examining than the others while the overall conflict was less exciting. The good news is that we learn much more about Uncle Joey's family background and history as well as Ramos' past.

Shelby is asked by a friend to check up on her husband who has been acting strangely. She follows him into a Polynesian bar where she quickly key realizes that the husband is dealing with a less than savory crowd especially a teen. When she confronts him he tells her to butt out but not before the owner of the establishment, The Big Kahuna takes notice. Shelby contacts Ramos for assistance and he sets the owner straight as to who she belongs to. However, Shelby had noticed that something is bothering Ramos but he is trying to block out his thoughts. He doesn't want to involve her.

Meanwhile, Our favorite detective, Dimples asks Shelby for her assistance in questioning a junior high teen he believed distributed a new drug that killed one teen and put the other in a coma. In addition, Shelby and her family are going over to Uncle Joey's for a cookout. She immediately picks up on the fact that Miguel has been asks to audition for Aladdin on Broadway but is afraid to tell Joey. This sends her on a trip to NY where she meets some other Manettos.

Shelby is becoming deeper entrenched into all of the lies she has been forced to tell and begins questioning her ethics. She also realizes she and her family are becoming family to Uncle Joey. The question is how much is too much?

While I enjoyed the read it just wasn't as stellar as the others. However, an event at the end of the book leaves me hopeful that the next book will be more exciting. I for one can't wait!

Shelby is back! Y'all, it doesn't matter what's going on in my life, when it's time for the next Shelby adventure, I'm excited and I'm never disappointed. Laced in Lies was no exception. There were several developments in this one that I loved, despite Shelby's hesitations... I love that there is a familial relationship forming between her family and Uncle Joey's. I know, I know, he's a mob boss. But he's a good one! LOL! I know. Still, love him and I'm loving the closer ties.

When I think about this book, it's easy to think of two completely different stories happening - and yet they flowed so well together. Shelby heads to the big Apple with Uncle Joey's son to help him with her "special talents" while he auditions for a NY musical. I don't care that it's unrealistic, it's awesome. There's a whole family ties story that is a total mess (As anything with Shelby seems to be, in her sweet way she's just destined for trouble) and yet it's fun and I can't wait to see how she untangles future messes sure to come from that.

The second story line is with Ramos. Y'all know I love Ramos and worry about him at the same time. Shelby is attracted to him and yet, she's married; I love her husband and their relationship so it worries me. But I think Colleen does a really good job of having a bit of sexual tension there while maintaining that Shelby will never betray Chris - not even emotionally. So Ramos has a secret of his own a foot and Shelby gets caught up in it (doesn't she always?) and of course, she ends up needing a bit of rescuing. She's getting tougher though and there's a moment with his motorcycle that I had a ball reading.

I'm continuing to adore the narration and I will never stop listening (unless we change narrators! gasp! no!). I can't wait for more adventures with Shelby!

Another absolutely awesome Shelby Nichols Adventure....... Oh Baby, Oh Baby :-)

Seriously riveting, totally amazing and omg talk about a web of lies growing and growing...lol note sure how Shelby is keeping everything straight but boy it's fun following along.

Ok what I loved the most in this mystery was how everything Shelby was working on converged into the one case in the end it just took a lot of figuring out to put all the puzzle pieces together and I have to say if everyone could work together for Shelby's sake she might not go nuts in the near future...lol So we have a client who is a high school friend, Dimples needs help on a drug case and here is the kicker Ramos the amazing needs help yes you heard it here first Mr Fix It needs help from Shelby .....lol she never thought she would see the day :-)

And we can't forget about the amazing trip to New York with Miguel her fake nephew but hey whats some fake family between friends when you get to ride in private jets and stay in magical hotels oh and don't forget the box seats to a broadway musical then to top it of Miguel's big dreams come true oh it was so good.

This book had so much jammed into it I read it twice in one day just to make sure I didn't miss anything and it was even better the second time around.

congrats Colleen Helme on another very memorable Shelby Nichols adventure.

I really enjoyed this book. You learnt a lot more about Uncle Joey and I think it is setting it up for another great story line in the next book. I do think you need to have read or listened to other books in this series as it helps with keeping all the characters straight as there is a lot of reoccurring fun characters and story lines. It is still a good story if you have because there is so much going on and Shelby is so much fun and gets into so much trouble that you find yourself thinking 'only Shelby could do that and get away with it!'.
Shelby is once again torn between helping the police solve a sudden influx of drugs into the city and working for Uncle Joey by following his right hand man and getting to the bottom of what is bugging him. She is also jet setting off to New York with Joey's son when he attends an audition for a part in a Broadway show. A show in New York should be simple right? Wrong Joey has family there which complicate things no end. With drug dealers, TV crews and rival gangs dogging her heels Shelby has to pull out all the tricks her mind reading skill give her to stay alive.
I normally really like the narrator but I wasn't to sure of her singing talents in this book, there is only on small verse so don't let it put you off, the voices were good tho.

This latest Shelby Nichols adventure is as awesome as the others, and an excellent read. I LOVE this series, and find the writing and characters so lively, truly coming to life in my mind to the point that it's like watching a movie (complete with a soundtrack in this case, as the author has released the song featured in the book about Ramos - Devil Rider - on her YouTube channel, which I'd definitely recommend readers have a listen to, so you can enjoy it brought to life!). I won't go into detail about the action in the book - you can get an idea in the book description and I hate spoilers! - but as usual Shelby is running round helping Uncle Joey, Ramos, Dimples, and trying to look after her family too. But can she do all that, keep her mindreading skills secret, and stay safe?
I loved this book, and highly recommend it to all Shelby fans (especially as we get more Ramos action this time!). If you've not read any books in this series, I'd recommend starting at the beginning and working your way through as they make more sense that way - and they're definitely worth it! Now just the nail-biting wait until the next instalment comes out!!
NB I received a complimentary copy of this book, but I always give an HONEST review based wholly on my own opinions

Another map caper with the ditzy Shelby, I love this series! There's a lot going on in this book, and I must admit I thought I'd missed something at the start as we went straight into a situation, but I hadn't missed anything, it was just full on from the very beginning!

This time Shelby is helping her friend who thinks her husband may be cheating, and gets involved with undesirables in a club. She's also helping Dimples with drugs that have killed some kids in a school. Ramos needs help with a ex-flame from his past, a well-known singer (well her dodgy brother). And she's also in New York with the other side of the Manetto family helping Miguel continue his dream of becoming a broadway star in a production of Aladdin. Of course the 'other' side of the Manetto family think she's 'officially' family (a long lost daughter of Uncle Joey's sister who disowned the family a long time ago), but of course then the sister turns up and meets her 'long lost daughter'(!) and as usual Shelby is in the middle of all the chaotic mess!

There is always a lot going on in these books with the multiple storylines, which usually merge a bit, but it's never hard to keep up with them which I love. Very enjoyable.

These are my Happily Ever After Novel Thoughts...

What can I say but, Only Shelby!

Only Shelby can find trouble any time she goes somewhere and it all started when she needed to go to the grocery store for some carrots. Well, since that fateful day, she has seen a boatload of trouble and send to be a magnet for it, even in the most innocuous places.

This time it seems to be more than she can handle but this job for her friend seemed pretty simple. What could it hurt talking a teacher? Well, as we all know, in Shelby's universe just waking up subways is asking for trouble.

A simple job here for one friend, a listen in there for Dimples, and a trip to New York, now you have a successful recipe for Shelby sized chaos.

But you know what? I loved every minute! I really enjoy seeing things through Shelby's eyes and riding on the back of Ramos' motorcycle doesn't hurt either.

This time there is so much going on, one had to wonder if there'll be a Happily Ever After.

I find it ironic that this time around one of Shelby's clients coincides with the crossing paths of Ramos, which ties in to a police case.

Shelby defies the purpose of what a novice is supposed to do both playing pool and when it comes to a motorcycle.

I can only imagine the trouble she may garner when Blake's superior contacts her.

I am surprised that she hasn't had to help Uncle Joey's wife as of yet.

She has had to help her husband, her son when it came to writing the paper although I still think the teacher was stupid for that and maybe she just needs a to retire. She has helped Uncle Joey more than once; Kate - that troubling imp; and Ramos twice. I wonder at what point will she ever tell the children since it seems that Uncle Joey and his family are beginning to meld more and more.

Currently, this is the last book in the series, though there is an opportunity for the 11th. I've really enjoyed the Shelby Nichols series and how her character and "abilities" have evolved through out. She's gone from being a housewife to a consultant; she straddles the line and works for both the police and the mob.

While I can sense hints from Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series (given the love triangles and mischief) I have to say that Helme has managed to allow for character growth and the relationships to flourish between the characters without generating an eventual stalemate between the male love interests for our protagonists.
