Not Exactly a Triumphant Return HomeKevin and Lilian, along with their family and friends, return home after their disastrous spring break vacation. Kevin tries to come to terms with the not-so-shocking knowledge that the yōkai world isn’t all humor and tropes. While Kevin is dealing with this newfound knowledge and the loss of his innocence, life returns to normal—what passes for normality when living with a family of kitsune.
But when lightning strikes, it likes to strike twice. Too bad for Kevin, the world of yōkai is the same way. He and Lilian will soon learn that the yōkai world isn’t prepared to let them go just because they want to live the life of normal high school students.
Brandon Varnell is the author of several book series, all of which involve anime-inspired fanservice. Having been an anime nerd for basically his whole life, his books tend to reflect that. He likes writing stories with loads of T&A, shonen-style battle scenes, and steamy romances that are both light-hearted and erotic. He is also a huge fan of harem anime, so most of his books feature harem romances. If that bothers you, you probably shouldn't read his books.

Two things have advanced as this series progressed. The characters have matured, which of course you'd expect, and the fanservice has become steamier. Neither of these are bad things, though certainly this isn't a completely lighthearted read. It's definitely more serious, but then actions do have consequences. I think it is that growth that makes this better than some other light novels where character growth isn't quite as apparent. But then others light novels don't have nearly as much T&A.
There's a reason I always look forward to the next volume.
A very good book! Brandon did an excellent job of having Kevins guilt affect him and letting him grow as a character without having him being whiney about it, which is hard to do right. There was a lot of character growth here, and look forward to reading more! Also, very solid action scenes, though they sometimes get a bit wordy with the discriptions. Thanks again Brandon!
Also, thanks for your artistry Kirsten! It's good to see it again! Seeing Iris, Christine, and Lindsay in "spy mode" was hilarious. Thanks for your hard work!
I finished reading the book and had a really good time with it. It did go into details about not that there's physical scars but psychological as well and the affect it has on loved ones, similar to PTSD. I don't know if that's what the author had in mind but that is what I got from it. I also like how the character relationships continue to grow and mature with each other, making me like classic characters more and really enjoying new ones. I just hope to see Cassy more since she was my favorite of the book.
Fantastic character development, and unpredictability to keep you hooked. Also looking forward for any secrets Camilla might be hiding, cause you know that she is.
The title of my review refers to the MC and the author. This book starts to hit more adult topics than the previous books as the MC suffers PTSD from killing a character in the last book. As the danger increases each book I will be interesting to see how Brandon powers up Kevin and crew to handle it, although I wouldn’t mind a slice-of-life story which harks back to the rom-com that seemed on he cards rather than dealing with ever escalating threats. I’m enjoying this series even if it seems a little less refined (and more otaku) than his later works.
Such a shame I was really enjoying this series but I won't be going any further.
Spoiler...... I lost all respect for Kevin and Lillians relationship when she basically cheated on him with iris. I was very impressed with the way the Harem was handeled in Wiedergeburt and wish that had been done in kitsune. I also hated that it was completely brushed over and Kevin just took it without even a serious discussion. I abhor cheating and I'm very disappointed that this series went this way. A fox's cuckold would be a more accurate name.

I've read this story thinking how much better could this story get? It was a wonderfully dark yet humorous tale. I can't wait to read the next book! Thank you Brandon for another great book!
Really enjoying the series. Looking forward to the next book, and finally having a harem. As a side note...the Author needs to learn to count lol. We got from 3 billion humans to over 5 billion a few books later.
Full of fan service and at the same time an emotionally charged book makes for an interesting read, but well worth the time... keep the fan service coming :)
