The Pulse [Book One]:The sun is dangerous. It sun can burn you, give you cancer, and eventually kill you. Laney learned that lesson the hard way when her mother died. But that all changes when a mysterious pulse of light, brighter than the sun, fills the sky on the day of the big Physics field trip. It's followed by a deadly wave of radiation from space.
Laney and her friends only survive because they're visiting an underground science facility. When she and the other nine survivors emerge from the underground, Laney finds a world of corpses, red smog, and tight supplies.
And worst of all, no ozone layer.
But even as Laney learns the cause for the apocalypse that is her new reality, a new danger rises. Another survivor is taking over their group and he's willing to kill to get to the top. Staying alive and finding her father means that Laney must face her deepest fears—fears that may be too powerful to overcome.
The Storm [Book Two]:Laney and her friends have survived 6 days into the apocalypse and have made it back to their Arizona hometown—but now ferocious dust storms are threatening their lives. Without a working vehicle, Laney must think of a way to help their group of nine escape to the eastern side of the country, to where her father might still be alive. Even though she's promised to stick with her friends and not give up hope, Laney knows better - not all of them are likely to survive the journey and she may once again have to face the loss of someone she cares about. And worst of all, as the new leader of her group, another loss will be her fault, her worst nightmare.
But as Laney leads her friends from Colton and out into the new world, she finds out the storms are not her only enemy. Other survivors are, too, and kindness no longer exists. Worst of all, an old enemy might have survived a bit longer than she hoped...
The Freeze [Book Three]: Laney and her friends have come far since the supernova disaster that killed half of the planet, braving the post apocalyptic conditions, death, and cruelty on their journey across the country to find their families. On the way, Laney has battled her own fears of loss—and it's only gotten worse since she's found herself getting closer to Jerome, a fellow survivor. She may or may not find her father alive in New York and there's only a fifteen percent chance she'll survive to see the next ten years.
But when her group of survivors reaches New York City, the danger has only begun. The world is now cooling and the only way to survive will be to find a place to hide from the coming cold and starvation. Worse still, Laney's caught the attention of a government agency bent on using her to ensure their own survival—and their plans for her might destroy who she is forever. Will Laney be able to break her icy cage of fear and embrace the terror that is life?

I have been provided with a copy of The Barren Trilogy Box Set by the author for an impartial review. This box set includes The Pulse, The Storm, and The Freeze.
The Pulse
I really enjoyed reading this story it was a lot darker than some of the other books that I’ve read by this author. It got really depressing at times and it just shredded your emotions. At the beginning of the book some of the science aspects of the story were boring at times because I don’t care for science so it just dragged along at that part but it got better and the story progressed to deal with the consequences of the situation they are placed in. I can’t wait to read the other books in the series to see what happens.
The Storm
This is the second book in the Barren Trilogy and it picks up right where we left off in the first book The Pulse. In this book you are introduced to some new situations and get to see how Laney and her friends handle them. This book was really interesting to read. You got to see the character of people and how they handle tough situations. I really enjoyed getting to see this and the characters grow. I can’t wait to read the next book in the trilogy.
The Freeze
This is the third and final book in the Barren Trilogy and it takes us back to where we left off in The Storm. I found this book really interesting. You find out how long it’s been since everything originally happened and it just blew my mind that in such a short amount of time all this had happened. I was really sad to see this trilogy end I had just gotten sucked into their lives and I didn’t want to see them go. This book was such an easy read I just sat down and finished it within a day. I hope the author comes back one day and revisits these characters to see how they are doing.

Apparently there must be something wrong with me because these books were so hard to get through and they were not awesome. It was like reading the same thing over and over to me. The progression was boring and this was just a no go for me. Sorry. Everyone else seemed to like this a lot but I couldn't connect with the story or the characters. If I had to read one more time about her personality and the way the she is and why I was going to chuck my kindle. Yup we got it. The first 10 times you explained it. Cool. And then and then.... the whole plot with the 3rd book and the rushed ending.... no thank you.
I know it is easy to sit here and criticize a book, because I couldn't write one. But this is just how I feel about this book. I have ready many post apocalyptic books and this one just didnt meet the mark for me.

The book is stuffed with grammar and spelling errors, dropped words and extra sentences the author forgot to delete after changing her mind about it. I also found multiple parts of the book had parts in it that were very unbelievable. Like the adults following the children instead of the other way around. That doesn't happen just about ever in real life. I also found it odd that the collider the book started in had no other people in it. Where were all the other scientists??? It was an ok book series, but it really needs an edit. The issues are throughout the entire series and it was very annoying.

Love this trilogy
I had read the first book in this trilogy and decided I just had to read the whole thing. It did not disappoint. There are some spelling and grammar errors throughout the series, though, and book 2 and maybe 3 (I didn't remember to check) are not formatted properly for people who read white text on black like me, book 2 appeared only as white pages with no text until I realized I should try setting my reader to white background and black text. The story is great, but it would be good to fix those things, too.

second time read
I didn’t realized I read these books until I got engrossed in the storyline again. Seat of your pants, page turning action … warning this is a sad book in spot but surviving and coming out the other end intact too. Great storyline, characters… I enjoyed it just as much the second time though and I rarely would’ve kept reading it for a second time, just glad I did

Killer read!
Quite different from what I nor ally read, but I freaking loved it! Extremely engaging, killer plot line, characters were easy to love, and the villains easy to hate.
I'm excited to read more of Holly's books!

Once I started this series, it was impossible to put down. Fun story, lots of excitement and twists. However, the spelling errors within the ebook text were very distracting. Otherwise, I'd have given this 5 stars.

Intense and thrilling
I enjoyed this trilogy very much. Strong characters with a believable storyline had me turning the pages until there were no more pages to read!

Could have been so much better.
This was a slightly different take on a post-apocalyptic theme, but with some startling plot holes and typos throughout. This did spoil my enjoyment of the story, which was reflected in the rating I gave.
The narrator calls herself a physics nerd, yet is surprised when a particle collider - fairly near where where lives - is underground. Really?
She is grumpy and a loner throughout, which doesn't change even when she almost dies, several times, yet undergoes a transformation after a dunking in water. Yeah, sure.
I know this is written for teenagers, but please...

The Pulse :
The Pulse is the first book in the Barren Trilogy. I really love this new serie. Can't wait to read more to the serie. Love Holly Hook's book. Totally recommanded it.

This is the second book in the Barren Trilogy by Holly Hook. I really loved it. It's an awesome read for dystopian lovers. Looking foward for the last part of the trilogy.

I understand that this is written for teenagers and I am not one, so take this as you will...
I think the story and concept is very good, however it lacked in it's execution. There are a lot of editing issues, i.e. no editing at all, which really detracted from the story. Also, the romance with Jerome and David nemesis seemed a little forced. A little subtlety goes a very long way! Perhaps I wouldn't have noticed this as a teenager, however self publishing was not a common or well respected thing when I was young so I really can't make that call.
Again, I think this could be a really great story if it was fleshed out a bit more and properly edited.
