Translated from French, this book tells both the story of a fox from his days as a kit through his growth into an adult, and of a family of children who, having set a trap that wounds him, become his protectors. It also shows the complex relationship skilled hunters have with the animals they hunt--how they respect and admire them even as they determine to kill them.

The story "Old One Toe" is about a friendship between a young girl and a fox that she rescues from a trap. The story shows that friendships can be formed between any creatures, if they possess the will to cooperate.

I read this book years ago, back in 5th grade for a project. It was my dad's book that he had for a long time. It's a pretty good read. I didn't really care for the trapping parts in it as much, but the book uses it to get your emotions going, I bet.
You should really take a chance on this though. For a hardy known, older, book, it is really good to curl up with and read. ^^

I really enjoyed reading this book with Tevka at bedtimes. It switches between the perspective of the fox and the perspective of the kids. Especially memorable is the point when the kids learn about the "mean old landlord". An old Scholastic version I had as a kid, translated from French. Recommended.

When their aunt's chickens are attacked in the night, the children decide to find out who the culprit is. Evidence points to an animal with a foot injury resulting in the name 'Old One-Toe.' This has the makings of a true classic. I remember reading it and becoming wrapped up in the story. Great for kids with a love for reading good literature.
