This book was crazy at its best. With each turn of the page, I didn't know what to expect and of course the author put her own special twist to it, with an ending that really surprised me. The Jane's were all a hot mess, especially Blond Jane. She was the ringleader of crazy. I'll never be able to look at anyone with the name Jane without thinking about this book. A job well done.
It's a No for me.... and this seems to be an unpopular opinion 🤔 This book felt Like if someone said "Long Story Short" and proceeds to give you the clip notes version of something that happened... Everything felt rushed and I kept feeling like I missed something because the Story was moving so fast and I hadnt even realized days went by in certain parts of the Story. Had potential maybe but didn't stick IMO
This book was not well written. The writing style was pretty immature there were way too many grammatical errors. Also the plot had potential to be maybe a decent Stepford Wives rip off but the execution came off as silly and convoluted. The author seems to have a following but I'm going to pass on reading any of her other books.
I thought this was a pretty good psychological thriller. It was a quick read, and I liked that the story jumped right into the drama from the start. However, there were several misspelled words, which made parts of the book distracting and took away from the overall reading experience. Even so, the suspense and twists kept me interested enough to keep turning the pages.

"The Janes" by B. M. Hardin
My Thoughts...
Now I will say this one is one of the most craziest, mystery, and suspenseful novel I have ever read...but it was GOOD! This author Ms. Hardin really knows how to keep ones attention and this one definitely did it for me. Wow, Jane, Jane, Jane...and that Blonde Jane... I think it was a total of 10 of them living on the same block! This story even though it was crazy was very captivating as I turned the pages looking to read more about Jane[s]. By the time I got to the end of 'The Janes'...more twisted Janes come out front and center that goes with that saying 'when something is too good to be true, more likely.. it is!' Will 'Blonde Jane' get hers?! What disappointed me more than anything about the read was the way the husband Brice treated his Jane...like she had no idea of what she was talking about but even more of a shocker was the best friend of Jane, Charity. Oh, well to truly understand it all you will have to pick up 'The Janes' to see how well they are presented to the reader. This is definitely one heck of a story I will not forget anytime soon. Thank you to the author for doing what you do so well and that is giving the reader a good read!
This book was really good. Quite interesting and I even saw a lil humor in the mystery. The Janes were something else. I enjoyed reading and laughing and they deserved what they got at the end. I was surprised at Charity her actions caught me by surprise. Overall, I enjoyed it.
I enjoyed this wild, suspense filled story so much I finished reading in record time. Of course, the twist threw me for a loop. The Janes were really outta control...
This suspense book was a great page turner. This book will have you second guessing people you are around, friends, your neighbors and people with the name Jane etc. The Janes in this book were cray cray!
This was a really good read. Suspenseful at every turn. It puts me the mind of the stepford wives. I love that it was multicultural. Very entertaining. That blonde Jane was crazy as hell.
This was a good suspense story from BM Hardin. The craziness started from the very first page until the very end. Blonde Jane was crazy and the things she did would drive anyone insane. If you like suspense, mysteries or thrillers this is definitely the book for you.
This book was an interesting read. Mary Jane is a happily married woman with a thriving career. She's an interior designer with her own company. Her husband Brice owns his own company as well and they have been married about a year. Things are really going well for them, until a break-in at their condo, leaves them wanting to explore their next chapter. Maybe it's time to look for their forever home and start a family. After all, Jane doesn't feel safe in the condo now that her space has been violated. While at a coffee shop one day, a lady offers her a realtor's card after hearing Mary-Jane tell Brice that they should start looking immediately. The realtor leads them away from Raleigh to Smithfield where there is a perfect home on S.J Lane. All the houses look exactly the same, but it is beautiful and exactly what they are looking for. The realtor tells them that another buyer is interested and has a cash offer, but Brice and Jane make an offer quickly and it is accepted. The neighborhood is beautiful with manicured lawns, perfect yards, and the sounds of children playing, although Jane never sees any children in person. There are some strange attributes, however. Strange as in every woman on the street is named Jane! Every single one. They are all weirdly dressed similar. And so are the men. The women don't work, and act oddly alike. What a coincidence that they are all named Jane. Since new Jane is an interior designer, she goes to work on decorating her house. She customizes her mailbox and plants lilies in her yard. Oddly enough, after a few days the flowers are changed back to perennials, and her mailbox is replaced by the standard. Blonde Jane from across the street, who seems to be the ringleader tells her that she must comply with the rules and that she must have follow the rules accordingly as everything has been decided and voted on already. New Jane does not stand for this and often has a rebuttal. But things keep getting stranger and stranger and Brice thinks that Jane has developed an obsession with these women. He doesn't seem to think things are strange at all, until he attends the BBQ hosted by Blonde Jane. He quickly learns that all the husbands despise their wives. They don't have sex or act like regular married couples. Brice and Mary Jane are completely opposite of these people. Not only that strange things are starting to happen. They are constantly watching New Jane. Appearing outside the windows, turning the knobs on the house, listening to conversations in the house, and they seem to know Jane's every move before she makes them. Charity her best friend and also her business partner, is supportive of her getting away from there as fast and as quickly as possible. But there is just one problem. The Janes run Smithfield. They are a community of Jane's that grew up with mother and grandmother Janes who basically built up and developed the town because of their wealth. They are idolized in the town, and every police, judge, worker, and person of authority are indebted to them it seems. Janes are chosen and privileged and Blonde Jane tells new Jane that she better get on board and enjoy the good life. Who wouldn't want to be a Jane? Mary Jane isn't going along with the program, however, and her and Brice think they should try to go back to the condo and sell the house on S.J. Lane but every time they try to leave the Jane's sabotage the effort. When they learn that the Adam's are trying to leave, they spread rumors about Jane that makes her lose her clients at work and Brice's officce building gets burned down. They try to leave and go to a hotel, but the bank has frozen their credit cards. A co-worker of Brice's gets the hotel room for them, but the Jane's show up and lure them back home. They are stuck, with no hope for escape because the police aren't helping. Now they threaten Jane that if she doesn't get in line and live like the other Jane's that they will hurt her parents. The rule is that they can't hurt another Jane but anyone else is fair game. One day after work, Charity and Jane go out for drinks and on the way back to S.J. Lane, Jane hits a woman and her dog. Terrified because she has killed this woman and her dog and is inebriated, Jane thinks she is going to jail but the Jane's appear out of nowhere. They tell her that if she just embraces being a Jane and become like them, they can make all this go away and it will never be brought to light that she was involved in this hit and run. Mary Jane agrees. She so starts to dress and act like them and essentially has to do everything that Blonde Jane says. This is only a front however, until she gets enough dirt on them to report the Janes and all the wrong doings, they have committed for years. The Janes clean up every one's mess. They take care of the mayor's mistress and any transgression that needs fixing. So, Jane goes to visit her parents and stops in Greensboro to have a chat with Blonde Jane's ex-husband on her way to Charlotte. The ex-husband basically confesses that Blonde Jane was evil and ruined his life. He told Jane that she better fall in line or else she would end up just like him. Disappointed that she didn't learn anything new she could use against the Janes she returns to S.J. Lane. But as she leaves Greensboro and travels to Charlotte, she passes the woman the dog that she thought she killed! She was thinking that they were dead, but the Jane's fooled her so that she would commit to their lifestyle. Now more than ever she was determined to bring them down. But the Jane's strike again because the ex-husband that she just visited is now dead and they have framed her with the murder. They stole a knife from her house with her fingerprints on it. When she is taken to the station for questioning for 16 hours, her lawyer comes to take her home. He has video evidence of Blonde Jane's car in the parking lot of the shelter where the ex-husband was, and she is technically the last person that sees him alive. As they are leaving the station, they cross paths with Blonde Jane and instantly as soon as Jane's lawyer gets in his car the car blows up! These people are crazy. Just when things couldn't get any worse, a noise is heard in the house and Brice is knocked to the ground and someone strikes Jane from behind. When she opens her eyes, she sees that Charity is amongst the Janes. What is going on? We learn that Charity's jealousy of Mary Jane is the reason she ended up on S.J Lane. She was upset that Jane wasn't there when she needed her during her abusive marriage, divorce and two miscarriages. When she reunites with Jane after they hadn't talked for years, she was envious of how perfect Jane was. MJ was married, beautiful, and had a thriving career. She didn't have anything to complain about. Well Charity would fix that. She paid a girl to give Mary Jane the realtor's card that led her to S.J. Lane. Charity's ex-husband was Blonde Jane's brother. He was terrified of the Jane's and knew the life of hell they would cause anyone who didn't fall in line with them. Charity only meant to make Jane's life miserable, she didn't think it would come this far. Now the Jane's are making her kill her best friend or else Charity's son will be a victim. Since they can't kill Jane themselves, they are making Charity do it. Jane tells Charity it is a set up and before Mary Jane could say much else, Silent Jane shoots Charity dead and are about to just end Jane. It doesn't matter that the rules are that they can't kill another Jane. Just as things are about to get even more uglier, Blonde Jane's husband comes out and shoots Red Haired Jane in the shoulder. Blonde Jane is stunned. Turns out Mr. Peterson and Silent Jane are the FBI. They knew that the authorities in Smithfield were corrupt and started their own investigation 5 years ago. They quickly welcomed Silent Jane in, because she seemed perfect. Stephanie, AKA Silent Jane, created the perfect fake life to gain acceptance into the Jane community. All the kill missions that were assigned to her as she was undercover were never carried out, she put all these people in a witness protection program and freed them from the wrath of the Jane's. Now that they had all the evidence, they were able to arrest all the Jane's on S.J Lane. Charity was dead but Brice was alive! Six months later they were purchasing another home, where the realtor, previous owners, and neighborhood were properly vetted. Charity, although she betrayed Mary-Jane, had signed over her child, her will, and all her bank accounts to Jane. Brice and MJ were now the parents to Charity's son and MJ was 3 months pregnant. Things were even better than they were before moving onto S.J Lane.

B M Hardin does it again. Page Turner. Mary Jane and Bruce love them as a couple but thought that Bruce was cheating on his wife. Blonde Jane and the rest of them except Silent Jane crazy as shell.
These Ladies were beyond demented. They were Psychos. Mary Jane had a lot of restrain and willpower, cause I would have punched a Jane on the first day! This book was awesome
This was such a fun read, omg! Reminds me of so many movies I've seen with kind of the same theme. A recently married couple moves to a new neighborhood before they find out the neighborhood's deadly secrets and have to fight for their lives trying to escape. One of my favorite movie plots, one of my favorite book plots, I never get tired of reading/watching these sorts of plots. In this book we have Jane, or Mary Jane to be specific who moves into this cute little cookie cutter neighborhood where she discovers something odd: all the women in the neighborhood have the same name, Jane. And more than that, the Janes want Mary to join their club of Janes and will do absolutely ANYTHING to force her to join them.
What I liked about this book was that it was absolutely hilarious at times. The way the Janes would be quietly intimidating, and Mary would just constantly cuss they ass out and refuse to join them was truly funny. It reminds me of those memes that make fun of the fact that white people, and Black people respond very differently in scary situations lol. And Mary and Brice/Bryce was not having it. They was like you know what, we're moving, IMMEDIATELY. I also liked the escalation of events. First, it was little things like flowers being changed, mailbox being replaced. And then it was things like, they Janes popping up INSIDE their house, and listening to their calls and basically stalking both Mary and Brice. The author slowly turned the dial on the crazy of the Janes, and I loved the simple progression of the crazy shit they'd do to antagonize Mary.
Where the book lost me was at the point where Mary gets behind the wheel while drunk, and the Janes have to make her hit and run go away. Mary, driving drunk, hit a woman walking her dog, and the Janes agree to cover it up if Mary finally agrees to join their little club of Janes. I was instantly furious because one thing I cant' STAND, is a drunk driver. Anybody who drives drunk, character in a book or not, instantly loses all respect I had for them. And Mary seemed responsible enough of a character NOT to drive sloppy drunk, even if her house was around the corner. So I was so upset at her for even getting into a situation where she'd have to owe the Janes anything. Because now, she had to wear the clothes and the headbands and go on their impromptu meetings of staging crime scenes and pretending to have kids. Because if she didn't? Oh they were going to take her straight to the cops and tell them about her hitting and killing someone while she was driving drunk.
After Mary is busted for driving drunk, she is even more obsessed with finding out the secrets of the Janes, once and for all. This proves futile, as her secret detour to see one of the Janess' ex-husbands backfires, as he is found dead, and the murder weapon with her fingerprints on it were found at the scene. What didn't make sense about this was, how would they have gotten Mary's fingerprints to compare? She'd never even gotten a speeding ticket, so how would they have matched her prints to the prints on the murder weapon? Granted, the Janes had the cops in their back pocket, but still, that made no logical sense. And when we get to the end and discover the actual culprit behind Mary winding up in that neighborhood, I was left feeling like, "HMMMM this don't make sense.". You're mad that your friend and you disconnected after college and you suffered alone, so you set her up to be terrorized by an entire neighborhood of psychos? Like who does that? And I also wanted to know more about the origin of Janes and why they wanted Mary to be a part of them so bad. They seemed to really really want her in their ranks, but I wasn't sure why when she was not like any of them at all. She had a career, her own business, wanted kids, etc. Why would they think she'd make a good match for them?
Lastly, there were a number of grammar issues. Wrong verb tense, missing words, the fact that Brice's name is spelled Brice, and Bryce on the same page. There were enough of these issues to kind of take me out of the story at times, but it is still a book I really enjoyed until we got to the second half where I feel it fell apart and we are left with questions still.
There is a saying ~ like minds think alike. Would it seem correct that friends that hang around each other act similar? Or even people who have the same name would appear to act alike? Not so much like twins or triplets but non related people maybe acting like each other, is it because they want to be like that other person? What are the chances that this can happen? Is this done on purpose or by accident?
Mary Jane and her husband Brice are newlyweds who are looking for a house to buy. They happen to luck up on a realtor who has the perfect house for them. When they checked out the house, she was right ~ IT WAS PERFECT!!! Joy overwhelmed them when they bought the house, and they also found that their neighbors were very friendly. Maybe a little too friendly. While they were meeting their neighbors, they discovered that there was something strange about the neighborhood. While Mary Jane was trying to figure out what the issue was with the neighbors, the neighbors was trying to figure out why she wanted to be different. Couldn't she just go along to get along or was she going to be the outcast on the block? Will the neighborhood survive if there started to be differences?
The Janes is a thriller. This is a dramatic spin on The Stepford Wives and how they would act if everyone had the name Jane. This novel will surprise you with the level that people will go to so that everything would appear perfect, at least according to them. The characters seemed to get along and the story flows smoothly. When there is strife within the community it gives you a sense of urgency because you know that it is going to be fixed in a way like no other. The Janes is a very well written novel that is an easy read, you should be able to get through it in less than a day and be completely satisfied.
The Janes is available for purchase on Amazon.com (Kindle and paperback).
I picked up The Janes as a quick read to help get myself back on track with my reading goal, and it turned out to be an entertaining, fast-paced read that kept me guessing until the very end.
Early on, I found myself completely wrapped up in trying to figure out who—or what—The Janes really were. I came up with several theories along the way, including one that was wildly off base but made perfect sense to me at the time. 😂 That’s a testament to how effectively the author builds intrigue and keeps the reader questioning everything.
One of the aspects I found most interesting was the group’s perspective on men and the mystery surrounding their motivations. The more I read, the more I wanted to understand their history, their purpose, and what had shaped them into who they are.
The pacing was one of the book’s strengths. It moved quickly, held my attention, and made it easy to keep saying, “Just one more chapter.” Before I knew it, I had finished the entire book in a single day.
And I have to give B.M. Hardin credit for that twist. I spent the book building theories and making predictions, only to realize I was nowhere near the truth. I genuinely did not see it coming, and I always appreciate when an author can surprise me in a way that feels earned.
While The Janes wasn’t a five-star read for me, it was definitely an enjoyable one. It pulled me out of a reading lull, kept me entertained, and reminded me that sometimes a quick read can still pack a punch.
“Someone is asking for me to trade in my 6-inch pumps, for a pair of tennis shoes and Vaseline. And I’m positive that this neighborhood isn’t ready for that type of Jane.”
If you are looking for a fast paced psychological thriller to add to your TBR then this may be your next read!
The storyline concept was solid. You move into your dream home with the love of your life to find out that you and every single woman in your neighborhood has the same name as you?! Sold. I could’ve never been Jane, tbh. As soon as I would’ve found that out I would’ve left.
This story was captivating, disturbing & had me fully engaged from start to finish. This gave “American Horror Story: Murder House” vibes. The cultish neighborhood was unforgettable.
This was my introduction to B.M Hardin. I had such a fun time with this. I’ll definitely be reading more books from her catalog.
Thank you, B.M. Hardin, for this book mail! Whew… I ate this one UP in a single sitting.
The Janes is the kind of eerie psychological thriller that grabs you from page one and refuses to let go. If The Stepford Wives and The Watcher had a baby… but make it Black. 👀
This mystery-suspense novel had me completely locked in and invested. The twists? Didn’t see them coming. Not one. Every time I thought I had it figured out, B.M. Hardin said, “Try again.”
Mary (just Mary, okay? 😅) was a FMC I found myself rooting for because when everybody around her was acting like things were normal, she trusted her intuition. And thank goodness she did.
Also, I’m weak off Brice because sir… as much chaos as was going on, he stayed trying to get it in. Read the room! 😂
And listen… don’t nobody offer me no cherry pie after reading this. If you know, you know. 🤐
This was a quick, entertaining read that had me on the edge of my seat and shook by the end. B.M. Hardin is a new-to-me author, and after this one, I’m definitely interested in reading more. I can’t wait to share the rest of the bookish mail she sent my way!
Creepy! But I liked it lol. Wasn't a very long book but the content was very intriguing. I adored (Mary) Jane and Brice's relationship even though I did want to shake him a few times...but we know that wouldn't make for a good story if we always loved everything the characters do. I liked the diversity amongst the Janes. Even with the story being creepy (can't think of a better word to describe it), there was also some funny parts. (Mary) Jane, Brice and Charity were likeable in the respect that they reflected normal people, not the superficial and often times typical gorgeous people or flashy and/or reckless. B.M. Hardin stayed true to form and wrote an out of the box story once again, this was my favorite thus far (only think I've read about 3 or 4 to date). I will definitely keep reading her work. I'd recommend her books to those who don't mind overly fictionalized stories, as in you can't really see them happening in real life but very entertaining to say the least.
The way I been sitting here with my mouth open for the last five minutes is diabolical.🤣
The Janes… there’s so much to unpack here!
Jane and hubby were just doing what married couples do… grow and glow and move on up in the world. First come marriage, then comes property, and when they score a house on S.J.Lane they are ready to live the dream, or so they thought. Their neighbors are a little… peculiar, and pretty soon they find out all they need to knew about their little town.
Baby listen, this thing right here was CRAZY! The way I was in here yelling at these characters 🤣. The blonde one… yep, that’s the one!
Let’s just say you might want to research that neighborhood before you move to it 👀
This story had so many twists and turns and just when you thought you had it figured out something else happened. This is easily in my top 5 reads of 2026.
Mary Jane (aka Jane) and her husband, Brice, think they’ve finally found their dream home…but peace doesn’t live on SJ Lane. Not for long, anyway.
Once they move in, things take a turn—strange, unsettling, and straight-up creepy. It doesn’t take long for them to realize something is off…especially on a street where every woman is named Jane. 😳
This gave very Stepford Wives but make it murderous energy, and I was HERE for it.
From start to finish, I was locked in. The tension kept building, the uneasiness kept creeping in, and that twist at the end? Whew. Had me sitting there like, “Wait… WHAT?!” 🤯
Now Brice…yeah he tested my patience a little bit 😂 but everything came together in the end.
Overall, this was a great, suspense-filled read that kept me on edge and fully invested. Definitely worth the ride!
Mary Jane has it all. She has the perfect husband, job, and best friend. She works hard to protect for peace. The natural next step would be to look for a home. Brice and Mary are more than ready to settle down. The only problem is perfection has conditions.
With every intention to become apart of this new neighborhood, Mary witnesses a few unsavory details about her neighbors. As more information is gathered, she learns very few people are not compromised. She’s not willing to lose what makes her unique.
Without spoiling the plot, I have to say my biggest point of frustration is Brice. If I say these women are out of their minds, don’t make it seem like I’m the problem. Baby, we went to the same event. You saw enough to know something ain’t right.
I don't like to read about weak female characters and (Mary) Jane was that for me. She didn't take control of anything, not even leaving when she thought she should. She stayed because her husband told her to. She just sat around and let things happen to her. I understand that every story has an audience, but I personally feel that "weak female character " should be a part of the list of "tropes" so you can avoid it if you choose to.
Also, there weren't very many descriptions in the book. For instance, we were told that the houses all looked alike, but not how the houses looked. There were no descriptions of season/time of year, barely a description of Mary Jane and her husband. The car was just a car, the store was a store and the café was a café.
This book had me cracking up! Where the hell was Brice when crazy got in the pool with her clothes on lol. He was supposed to be outside with her doing yard work. He didn’t hear her scream? I would have been recording them with my phone from jump. It annoyed me how Brice didn’t have her back. Some things I can see where he could give her a side eye, but he even noticed some weird things. I would have taken my butt to an hotel way sooner, The Residence Inn would be my new PO Box.
Now here comes the spoiler and I mean the spoiler so read past this line.

The one thing that made no sense at the end was for Charity to name Jane in life insurance and care of her son if she despised her.

What a page turner! Once I started, I couldn’t stop. It took me just a few hours to read it because I just had to know what would happen next and how it would end. These women—The Janes were completely loco! Their idea of perfect was twisted and it made for quite a storyline. Once again, the author took me on an explosive ride full of twists and turns. But, the last twist at the end fell a little short for me. I didn’t care for it. Also, there were a lot of grammatical errors and typos. This is my second read from this author in just a few days and it seems to be a pattern. I’ll definitely read more of her work, so I hope it gets better in that regard because she’s a great storyteller.
