I love picture books about complicated subjects, and perhaps especially, grief. Who helps kids understand death, especially the death of loved ones? In this story lovingly and lyrically told by Danish author Glenn Ringtved and beautifully illustrated by Danish illustrator Charlotte Pardi, four young children living with their grandmother are visited by Death. They know who he is and why he is there; grandma is slipping away. They are nevertheless hurt and confused, so he tells them a story about the inextricable relations between joy and grief. He's a loving character, who helps them understand and come to terms with their loss. So beautiful and important!

I have to say I read this because I found it on the incomparable Maria Popova's Brainpickings site, so I recommend you read her beautiful analysis after you read the book.

Even to the most-learned men and women, few things are as scary, swamping and tearing as death. Like an end, that ultimate exit, beyond which everything becomes void and nothing remains to return, it hovers over us like a spying cloud, always waiting for that one chance to seize our life and make it its own. How then, would one, explain its inevitability, its invincibility, its essentiality to children?

This gem of a book, majestically, rises to this task.

At the strike of night, Death comes to take away a severely ailing grandmother. But her four grandchildren cannot let that happen. They keep Death busy throughout the night, with cups of coffee and innocent questions, delaying his action till the morning, when he would have to retreat because, after all, Death cannot function in daylight.


But Death, the great equaliser, has to perform his task. And he does so, but not before explaining, in the most beautiful way, to the children, about the pairs the world is sewn into. Day and Night, Joy and Sorrow, Delight and Grief, Life and Death - The pairs have to be accepted together and without one, the other would hardly have any meaning.

It is the same with life and death… What would life be worth if there were no death? Who would enjoy the sun if it never rained? Who would yearn for the day if there were no night?

With some heart-warming illustrations, Ringtved paints a tender picture, wherein he not only emphasizes the values lying in the hearth of life and death but also imparts an immense amount of fortitude and resilience to the children, making them heroes of the story in their own rightful way.

Should I not be afraid of, then, the ultimate terminator? Perhaps I should be still, but might take heart, in crying and not breaking.

ابكِ يا قلبُ، ولكن لا تنكسِر. يزور الموت بيتًا تسكنه جدة وأربعة أحفاد. لا أحد من الأحفاد يجهل طبيعة هذا الزائر، بعباءته السوداء ومنجله. يفكر الأطفال بأن عليهم استبقاء الموت حتى تشرق الشمس فلا يقبض روح الجدة، فيقدمون له فناجين القهوة واحدًا بعد الآخر، لكنه يكتفي أخيرًا وقبل أن يقبض روح الجدة يقص عليهم حكاية..

كان هناك أخوان اسمهما حزن وكرب، وأختان اسمهما فرح ومسرّة. كل واحد من الأربعة يتوق إلى ضده، يتزوج الأخوان من الأختين ويسأل الموت الأطفال؛ ما قيمة الحياة بلا موت؟

المراجعة باللغة العربية في الجزء الثاني

That book shattered me. I wouldn't recommend it to any child though it was written for children. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who is going through a hard time either.

The premise was lessening the gloominess of the idea of death. Especially kids who will have to go through that unpleasant experience.

Although I read many books that dealt with the subject of death, that book adopted a different perspective for handling talking about that uneasy topic.

Portraying death itself as a person in a children's book like that one could have had a more positive and less bleak effect it wasn't presented in that horrifying image. The man who portrayed death could have dressed in a normal black suit instead of that scary gown.



Despite the frightening look of Death, the story shows him as a kind, wise and courteous being who wouldn't start doing his job (taking the soul of the children's beloved granny) till he makes sure that those kids are ready to handle that unpreventable occurrence.

For consoling those four kids, Death starts to tell them a story from which we will learn along with the kids that we can't know the worth of life without tasting its sourness.

The story was beautifully and sweetly told and narrated, but that sweetness was mixed with a realistic perspective that doesn't suit little kids.

من غلاف الكتاب الذي رأيته عند أحد بائعي الكتب القديمة بالأزبكية، كان من السهل معرفة موضوعه. وقررت تصفحه رغم قراري بعد وفاة والدي بمحاولة تجنب القراءة عن الموت قدر إمكاني.

تصفحت الكتاب سريعا ووجدتني مصرة على اقتناءه. وعندما عدت للبيت وقرأته انسابت دموعي بالطبع. بكيت من جمال التناول والحكي الجميل في هذه القصة العذبة، وبكيت بالطبع على الغالي الذي ذهب بلا رجعة.

كما كتبت في المراجعة الإنجليزية، أنه على الرغم من جمال وعذوبة القصة، إلا أن التناول بها لموضوع الموت لم يكن مخففاً بما يتناسب مع السن الموجه له تلك القصة. فلا أنصح بقراءتها لمن هم أقل من ثلاثة عشر عاما. لقد خبأتها جيدا بعيدا عن متناول أبناء اختي الصغار لأنني أعرف انهم لن يتحملوا جرعة الحزن الموجودة بها. كما أن بعض الصور بالقصة مخيفة للأطفال.

What a wonderful book this is! Never thought a book on such a dreary topic could be handled so beautifully.

Death has come to take away the grandmother of four little children. So they decide to try diverting his attention away from his task. He then tells them a beautiful story that helps them understand how life is incomplete without death.

This would be a fabulous book to help little children understand something as tragic as death. As the Grim reaper himself puts it, "Cry, Heart, But Never Break." Don't allow the grief to overwhelm you but remember that life moves on, and focus on the good memories of those who are no longer with you. The message that the book conveys is important for adults too. So this can be a beautiful book to read together if you want to explain the why's of death to your child or if someone close has passed away.

The illustrations also are gorgeous, evoking the right feelings. I loved how Death isn't portrayed in a very scary way but just as a secretive old man. (Reminded me a little of the BFG illustration from my Roald Dahl book.)

Amazing, amazing, amazing!!! Recommended with all my heart.

کتاب کودک هایی که منطق کودک رو به کار میگیرن و روش حساب باز میکنن همیشه برام جالب تر و ارزشمند ترن؛ این که به بچه این اطمینان رو میدن که روی درکش حساب باز کردن، میتونه تو دنیای آدم بزرگ ها دلشون رو گرم و اندیشه شون رو بزرگ کنه.

از بچگی نقاشی کشیدن رو دوست داشتم، و از همون موقع بیشتر محو تصویرسازی‌های کتابا می‌شدم تا داستان‌هاشان... حتی الان هم قبل از خوندن کتاب‌های بزرگسال (اگر تصویری داشته باشند) اول می‌روم و یک دور تصاویرشان رو می‌بینم

این کتاب، قرار است در مواجهه کودکان با مفهوم مرگ به آنها کمک کند؛ به نظرم جدای از داستانگویی اثر، تصویرسازی‌ها و انتخاب تکنیک کتاب هم، شاهکار و خیلی فکر شده هستند.
با وجود قالب بودن رنگ‌های سرد در تصاویر، تصویرگر در جاهای مختلف رنگ‌های گرم رو هم به کار برده است. حتی آسمان شبش هم به رنگ سیاه در نیاورده است.
همچنین استفاده از آبرنگ رقیق، باعث شده که رنگ‌های سرد شباع‌شده نباشند (بیشتر رنگ پریده‌اند) و حس غم و خفگی رل در کودک تشدید نکنند.
از طرف دیگر، آبرنگ کیفیتی داره که رنگ‌هاش در هم محو می‌شوند (محو شدن مرگ و زندگی در هم شاید)، و در کنارش آرامشی به مخاطب کتاب می‌دهد؛ استفاده از خطوط نرم در نقاشی‌ها هم دقیقا در هماهنگی با همین اهداف بوده است.

দাদীর সাথে বাস করে চারজন নাতী-নাতনী। একরাতে সেখানে মৃত্যু এসে হাজির হয় দাদীকে নিয়ে যেতে।
নাতি-নাতনীরা বুদ্ধি করে মৃত্যুকে কাপ��র পর কাপ কফি খাওয়াতে থাকে যাতে দাদুকে নিয়ে যাওয়ার সুযোগ না হয়।
মৃত্যুও বুঝতে পারে....ছোট ছোট নাতী-পুতিরা আসলে হৃদয়ের কতখানি হারাতে চলেছে। সে তখন তাদেরকে একটি গল্প শুনায়।
এরপর তারা বুঝতে পারে দাদীকে যেতে দিতে হবে....

কষ্টে কাঁদো কিন্তু ভেঙ্গে গুড়োগুড়ো হয়ে যেও না।
আহা!
কি সুন্দর বই। কি যে সুন্দর ইলাস্ট্রেশন।
গল্পটা ভীষণ ছোট্ট কিন্তু হৃদয়কে গভীরভাবে নাড়া দেয়ার ক্ষমতা রাখে। বিশেষ করে আমরা যারা হারানোর মানে জানি।

As a culture, Americans are not good at Death. I have witnessed it many times, been part of it myself. Although this book, originally published in Denmark in 2001, brings "the grim reaper" or Death, right in the house, he helps the children to understand that death is truly just another part of all our lives.

It will seem creepy to some at first, but if you can't find meaning and truth in the words that Death shares with the children, then you probably need to work on your acceptance of the processes of life for yourself before you share with kids.

A great book to help deal with the death of a loved one. Very sweet.
But then again, I do love a good funeral.

نه، بغض نکرده‌م. مدلمه.

فضای اول کتاب برام خیلی تاریک و سرد بود ولی کم‌کم گرم شد و به آمیختگی نور و تاریکی رسید.

بچه‌ها می‌تونن این‌طور منطقی با مرگ کنار بیان؟
سه‌تا نکته:
۱.بچه‌ها بیشتر از چیزی که فکر می‌کنیم می‌دونن و می‌فهمن.
۲.هرکتابی می‌تونه فکر آیندهٔ بچه رو هم بسازه.
۳.بچه‌های توی کتاب هم درست نفهمیدن مرگ چی‌ گفت ولی کمی آرامش گرفتن.

Beautiful, just absolutely beautiful! This is a tender book that teaches children about death and grief so sweetly and perfectly. While the four children try to distract Death so he won't take their grandmother (politely, might I add, but serving him coffee, and talking to him), Death sits with them and kindly tells them a story that explains how grief and joy, happiness and pain, go hand in hand, one making the other more poignant. And the pictures are just gorgeous as well.

اگر دلتون گریه می‌خواد، سراغ کتاب خوبی اومدید.
این کتاب قلبم رو مچاله کرد. فکر کنم الان نویسنده داره پودر حاصل از قلبم رو در رودخانه‌ می‌ریزه.
قصه از اونجایی شروع میشه که "مرگ" در خونه رو می‌زنه و میگه که قصد داره مادربزرگ بچه‌ها رو ببره.
کتاب کوتاهی است که در یک نشست چند دقیقه‌ای تمام می‌شود.

This is a really special book, it gives the reader permission to feel grief and loss, to live with it but not to let it break you because life and death go together. Death is represented as a figure of a kind but sad man, he doesn't want to take the children's grandmother away but he know's that this is the way of life. His explanation to the children is beautiful; "What would life be worth if there were no death? Who would enjoy the sun if it never rained? Who would yearn for day if there were no night?"
A very caring way of introducing death to children, highly recommended.

برای بچه‌ها واقعا همه‌چیز شفاف‌تره، بچه‌ها کاملا درک میکنن فقدان رو و خیلی بهتر از بزرگ‌ترها باهاش کنار میان، این کتابم همینقدر ساده از عبور و پذیرش حرف میزنه و بچه‌هام مشاهده‌گر دقیقی‌ان.

اصلا تصور اینکه مرگ رو تو هیبت دروگر با اون شنل مشکی و داس ببینم هم من رو میترسونه😰

اليس الموت والحياة وجهان لعملة واحدة؟ اليسا يكملان بعضيهما؟ كما يُكمل الأسى الفرح، وتكمل المسرة الحزن، فلا قيمة لأحدهما دون الأخر، وأنه وإن كان الموت هو نهاية الحياة، فإن الحياة بدونه لا تسوى شيئًا، وأنه، بالرغم من ذلك، لا بأس في أن تبكِ يا قلب، لكن إيَّاك أن تنفطر.

هذه القصة تحاول إيصال فكرة الموت بأبسط صورة للأطفال، لكنني أراها فشلت في ذلك، الكتاب يشرح الموت بشكل صائب نعم، لكنه مؤلم، أشد إيلامًا من أن يقرأه طفل.

When Death comes calling, four young children, determined to prevent him from taking the beloved grandmother who had raised them, attempt to stall him, first with coffee and then with questions. Death, who is full of love and understanding, tells them the story of the brothers Sorrow and Grief, and their long and loving unions with the sisters Joy and Delight. The message, about the balance between seeming opposites - joy and sorrow, light and dark, life and death - is one the children find convincing, even if they don't fully understand it. It is Death who says, as the children's grandmother lies dead, "Cry Heart, but never break. Let your tears of sadness help begin new life."

Originally published in Denmark as Græd blot hjerte, this poignant but understated picture-book about death and grieving emphasizes the fact that loss and sadness are inextricably bound to life and joy, and give meaning to all that we cherish by providing a painful but necessary contrast. Chosen as the 2017 winner of the Mildred L. Batchelder Award - given each year by the Association for Library Service to Children (a division of the American Library Association) to the best book translated from a language other than English - Cry, Heart, But Never Break is a book that never condescends to its young audience, handling the concerns and grief of its child characters with sensitivity. As the chair of the Batchelder Award Committee noted, this is a story that "respects readers by offering a comforting, but direct confrontation with death in a story that is both somber and joyful.” Ringtved's text, which is in my opinion well worthy of the accolades it has won, is enhanced by the accompanying artwork of Charlotte Pardi, which captures the emotional register of each scene to perfection. Whether it be the earnest sadness of the children serving coffee to Death, or the transcendent hope that memory provides in the two-page spread in which the breeze recalls his grandmother to one of the children, Pardi's illustrations skillfully capture the most powerful moments of the story. Hãy khóc, hãy đau đớn, nhưng đừng bao giờ gục ngã

Mua cho cháu rồi cậu đọc cũng thích, những cuốn sách trẻ em thường khiến con nít thích thú và người lớn suy nghĩ. Truyện của Ringtved thường hài hước nhưng cuốn này thì khác, một ẩn dụ nhẹ nhàng nhưng sâu sắc và trọn vẹn về lẽ sống chết, đọc cho mùa covid là hợp rồi.

Truyện kể về ngôi nhà có bốn đứa cháu sống chung với bà ngoại, và hôm nay Thần Chết ghé thăm ngôi nhà. Sợ tụi nhỏ hoảng sợ nên Thần Chết để lưỡi hái trước nhà. Bốn đứa đều biết Thần Chết tới làm gì, mỗi đứa mỗi cách phản ứng đại diện cho những phản ứng thường gặp của con người trước sự ra đi của người thân. Vì nghĩ Thần Chết chỉ hoạt động trong bóng đêm, chúng rót cà phê liên tục cho Thần Chết để đến sáng thì ngài sẽ đi mà không mang theo bà ngoại. Nhưng cái gì đến thì cũng đến, một đứa hỏi bà ngoại phúc hậu vô cùng yêu thương chúng cháu, tại sao bà lại phải chết?

Bên dưới lớp áo choàng đen của Thần Chết là một trái tim vẫn đỏ hỏn, vẫn đập chan chứa những yêu thương. Ngài kể câu chuyện về hai chàng trai tên Sorrow và Grief, họ sống cúi đầu với cuộc đời tối tăm, vì không bao giờ ngẩng đầu lên nên họ không biết trên những quả đồi có điều gì. Trên một đỉnh đồi, có hai chị em là Joy và Delight. Hai người sống trong một thế giới đầy màu sắc và vui vẻ, nhưng khi nhìn xuống thung lũng họ lại thấy một sự trống trải không thể gọi tên, điều đó khiến hạnh phúc không trọn vẹn. Rồi một ngày họ gặp nhau, Joy kết hôn với Sorrow và Delight kết hôn với Grief. Ở lưng chừng đồi, hai cặp đôi sống hạnh phúc và không thể thiếu nhau, đến lúc chết đi cùng nhau.

Thần Chết nói với bọn trẻ, đó là cuộc sống. Điều gì sẽ diễn ra nếu sự sống có đó mà cái chết không có đó? Ai có thể yêu những ngày nắng nếu chưa từng trải qua những ngày mưa? Và ai có thể ước ao ánh sáng ban ngày nếu chưa từng trải qua đêm tối? Bọn trẻ cảm giác được điều đó hợp lý, một sự hợp lý đáng buồn.

Khi Thần Chết đến bên bà, đứa nhỏ nhất chặn lại nhưng đứa lớn an ủi rằng, để Thần Chết làm việc của ngài. Bên cửa sổ, tiếng Tử Thần cất lên như một lời ru nhẹ nhàng mà buồn thảm: “Hãy bay đi, linh hồn. Hãy bay thật xa nơi này”. Đám trẻ biết sự ra đi của bà là vĩnh viễn, nhưng khoảnh khắc buồn bã đó được bao bọc trong sự yên bình ấm áp.

Trước khi ra đi, Thần Chết nói với đám trẻ, “Hãy khóc, hãy đau đớn, nhưng đừng bao giờ gục ngã.
