Dinastia Esterhazy este veche și nobilă, însă se confruntă cu o problemă: descendenții ei se fac tot mai mici din generație în generație.
Când cel mai tânăr nepot cade într-un coș de hârtii și nu mai poate să iasă, principele Esterhazy se hotărăște să acționeze: își trimite nepoții în lume ca să-și caute soții.
Cu cât mai mari… cu atât mai bine.
Astfel că mezinul familiei, prințul Esterhazy, este trimis la Berlin, unde trece prin nenumărate aventuri și e martor la căderea Zidului Berlinului, pentru ca, în cele din urmă, să-și găsească o mireasă potrivită.

About the author

Irene Dische is an American writer, born and raised in the Washington Heights district of New York City.
She has studied Literature and Anthropology on the Harvard University. She was a freelance journalist (The New Yorker, The Nation). In the early 1980s, Dische moved to Berlin, Germany, and now she devides her time between Berlin and Rhinebeck, New York. A lot of her work is written in English, but often first published in German.

Sie hat Literatur und Anthropologie studiert an der Harvard University . Sie war freelance journalistin (The New Yorker, The Nation). In den frühen 1980er Jahren zog sie nach Berlin, Deutschland, und jetzt lebt sie abwechselnd in Berlin und in Rhinebeck, New York. Viele ihrer Werke sind in englischer Sprache verfasst, aber zuerst in deutscher Sprache herausgegeben.

Oooooooh ma che bellina questa storia! Il Principe coniglio Esterhazy obbliga tutti i suoi nipoti coniglietti a partire per cercar moglie, possibilmente molto alta perché gli Esterhazy sono piccoli. Michele Paolo Antonio Maria Esterhazy (chiamato anche Esterassi) parte alla volta di Berlino dove troverà una bellissima fidanzata con cui andrà a vivere prima sotto il Muro e poi, quando il Muro sarà abbattuto, in campagna.
Bella fiaba dagli splendidi disegni che racconta il periodo della caduta del Muro di Berlino.

I'm a sucker for quirky children's books about animals, and Esterhazy is delightful. Sowa's pictures are touching; he gives his creatures a lot of dignity. This love story set against the backdrop of the Berlin Wall is charming.

It was a cute yet strange book.
I'm not quite sure what to call the genre this book belongs to(maybe magical realism???), but the way the protagonist rabbit (Esterhazy) was treated was confusing and intriguing. (He was trapped and kept as a pet rabbit, but no one batted an eye when he spoke to humans. Oh and he's a prince??? huh???)

Maybe the story is an allegory for human stupidity. I don't know.
Maybe I should read it in the original German and not in translation.

Anyway, I've decided to read this book solely because of Michael Sowa's illustration.
And I was not disappointed. His eerily quiet illustration was great for the story set in Berlin during the time of the Berlin Wall. (I've read that during the time when there were Wall, the place was a safe haven for small animals because no cat or dogs could get near the wall because of the patrols, and there was nothing for the predators with wings to hide so they could attack these animals. His final illustration reminded me of that.)

Ho regalato alla mia bambina questo librino, per coltivarle un po' di curiosità, anche se ha già una piccola idea su quel che è stato e quel che ha rappresentato -per l'Europa e il mondo intero-il Muro di Berlino.
Gliene parlai diffusamente l'anno scorso, dopo aver guardato con lei il film Good-bye Lenin ma, temendo che se ne fosse dimenticata, ho nuovamente rincarato la dose.
Lei è convinta che la Storia con la esse maiuscola sia fatta solo di eventi lontani, da sfogliare sul sussidiario, e quando scopre che anch'io (e tutti i parenti "grandi") ho vissuto la Storia, sconfina sempre in una sorta di velato sarcasmo (Uuuh, vecchi siete!). So per esperienza, del resto, che per i bambini la materia è ostica, riconducibile spesso ad una sequela di avventure senza tempo. Si trattasse di Carlo Magno, Napoleone, Garibaldi o Andreotti, quante volte mi sono sentita porre la famigerata domanda: tu c'eri? Lo hai conosciuto?
Sugli eventi dai Cinquanta in poi, adesso, sono in grado di rispondere veramente "Sì, io c'ero, lo ricordo" e l'effetto che colgo nei piccoli interlocutori è lo stesso che provavo io alla loro età. Lieve, solo lieve, stupore. Quasi un'ovvietà. I grandi tutto sanno e tutto conoscono, per definizione.
Esterhazy è una tenera storia di conigli scritta a quattro mani da Hans Magnus Enzensberger e Irene Dische, splendidamente illustrata da Michael Sowa, pittore e designer tedesco, a cui si devono, tra l'altro, i magici ritratti surreali realizzati per arredare la camera della favolosa Amelie.
Un incanto.

Süße und kurze Geschichte über einen kleinen Hasen, der aus Österreich auszieht um einen großen weiblichen Hasen zu als Partnerin zu finden. Landet im geteilten Berlin und lebt dort nach einer kleinen Irrfahrt bei einer Hasenkolonie an der Mauer bis diese fällt und er mit seiner Familie daraufhin aufs Land zieht.

Storia della famiglia degli illustri conigli Esterhazy, principi fa generazioni. Unico difetto, si cibano solo di dolci e così sono sempre più piccoli. Vengono inviati in ogni parte di Europa perché trovino delle mogli più grandi di loro. Ma a Berlino non ci sono conigli...

Prințul Esterhazy și goana după iepuroaică
Dintre toate cărțile cu personaje iepuri pe care le-am citit, cred că aceasta este cea mai unusual de care am avut ocazia să dau. Am făcut cunoștință cu dinastia de iepuri Esterhazy, niște iepuri regali care după multe generații ajung să fie din ce în ce mai mici.

Sesizând problema, conducătorul dinastiei îl trimite pe prințul Esterhazy în altă țară, unde trebuie să își găsească o iepuroaică zdravănă cu care să se împerecheze și mai apoi să aibă copii mari.

Lectura de față este potrivită pentru copii, însă are niște note cumva mai serioase. Povestea iepurașului în căutarea unei iubite este presărată și cu momente de umor, dar umorul este un pic diferit așa că nu știu dacă orice copil s-ar prinde de el.

Relatarea în sine este frumoasă, mai complexă decât altele de acest tip, așa că poți să te adâncești mai bine în lectură în timp ce urmărești cu prințul Esterhazy ajunge să lucreze la un magazin cu ouă de Paște sau te miri pe unde, numai pentru a putea avea bani în țara unde își va descoperi iubita.

P.S.: Da, își întâlnește marea dragoste, o iepuroaică simpatică și dulce de tot! 😍🐰

Die schönenilder sind etwas düster, aber zeigen auch gut, wie sich ein kleiner Hase in der großen Stadt Berlin fühlen muss. Die Berliner Mauer wird mit einer ganz neuen Perspektive in die Geschichte integriert.
