Flawed Perfection

Rate this book
Nathan wasn’t sure why people were so obsessed with dating and sex. Sure it probably felt good but he just couldn’t figure out what all the fuss was about. It might have helped if he knew what he was looking for. But with so many labels and options, he just wasn’t sure. It seemed so easy to everyone else, but to him, it felt like something was missing.

Gabriel thought Nathan was absolutely perfect. Sweet, funny, sexy, and completely confused about what he desired—but absolutely perfect. He wanted to help Nathan. Would his sexy roommate be open to something that was completely outside of the box or would Gabriel ruin their relationship before it even started?

There aren't many dedicated mm puppy play books so this was going to be a bit of winner so long as it delivered in the kink department. I was pretty damned satisfied with this kink.

Nathan hasn't ever defined his sexuality, a mixture of stressful teenage years, pre occupied parents and the lack of a brain to mouth filter, he never even came close to desiring anyone.

Nathan was a pretty fun, sweet, scatter brained and although slightly overdone character. He didn't suspect he was submissive but once he did a little research, he realised what had been missing from previous potential partners. His lack of filter was a constant and while I didn't find it irritating the joke got kind of repetitive.

Gabriel is Nathan's roommate and Dom who prefers puppy play. He's naturally assumed the role of Nathan's keeper due to Nathan's inability to remember acitivies such as eating and sleeping.

There was quite a bit of build up to this relationship, which I liked. Despite going into this for the kink, it is nice to have some relationship development there. I find it makes the sex more explosive when it happens. It certainly was here! Their tension was delicious and the sex scenes were very detailed and erotic.

I was also super happy with the kink, maybe not as much as I would've like, but there were the full range of puppy 'accessories', including tails and leashes!

I got this through KU, so if puppy play is your thing definitely give it a go! I wouldn't say this is particularly prestigious writing, but it has good sex, good kink and an actual relationship! I'll reread when I want some more puppies in my stories!

It's an incredibly sweet romance between two roommates and a story about finding out who you are and what you want and having the courage to explore it. Nathan is a forensic accountant who lives mostly in his own head. He has a mixed-up brain and no filter on what may come out of his mouth...but he is sweetness personified and really does need a keeper. He has one. His roommate Gabriel discreetly manages Nathan while quietly obsessing over how attractive he is and how much he wants him. Nathan is a virgin, not from any hard held beliefs, but only due to the fact that he has never gotten interested enough in anyone to go any further than casual dating. He is not sure if he is gay or straight or bi or something else, because nothing feels right. When he accidentally finds out that his roommate seems to be into BDSM and puppy play however, he is really intrigued. Nathan is a great character. Not only is he completely clueless, he is also curious and has no social inhibitions, so he googles and asks the questions about the lifestyle and the kink. This seems to be a common theme in M.A. Innes’ work. She always tries to educate the reader as to what the participants may get out of the specific kink.... since there is so many different types and something that isn't a course you can sign up for in school. She always manages to do it in a way that never makes it seem like it's info-dumping. This author also writes under the name Shaw Montgomery and those books carry out the same theme. This one is a lot more romance than it is erotica, despite the puppy play and the steamy scenes the main focus of the book is Nathan’s path to discovery of himself and his wants and needs.

While this was a fairly decent puppy play book without any relationship angst, it wasn’t successful in keeping my interest very long and I skimmed huge parts.

I really liked the premise of the 23 year old virgin who had no idea which way he swung, getting educated by his Dom of a roommate.

Nathan was a very sweet young guy without a filter. This resulted in him talking out loud when he thought he was thinking. I also really liked Gabriel and how sweet and caring he was to Nathan.

The puppy play was really well done and while not a kink you come across all that often, it never felt weird to me and was all explained really well.

But…. despite all these positive things, I was really missing some chemistry here. I was even skipping the sex scenes, which were just too long. There were only 2 or 3 sex scenes, but they were so drawn out I lost all interest.

My disinterest started when sensible Gabriel wanted to take things slow so Nathan could get used to their new kink. I’m all for thinking things through and talking about it, but here it was just overkill. I actually enjoyed the first half more when they were still talking about the possibility of kink and not doing anything yet...

Overall this was a nice BDSM book about puppy play, but a little too detailed to really hold my interest.

Very nice D/s, puppy play, 1st time, virgin story. M.A. Innes sure writes a good one.

I'd sure love to actually see that final scene... With Innes' descriptions it's easy to imagine, but damn it would make gorgeous porn.

Book safety below.
I’m going to start this review on a negative note, which I rarely do, but this is one of my biggest pet peeves. Why is there no character descriptions?? Like, at all? No eye color, height, hair color.. just nothing. It frustrates me so bad.

On to more positive things. I’m certainly no expert, but I felt like the kink was done very well. It made sense for the characters, especially Nathan who is exceptionally scatterbrained. He needed to quiet his mind sometimes, and puppy play/subspace was perfect for him. Nathan didn’t really know what got his motor running, but he knew something was missing. His roommate Gabriel had kind of been acting like his Daddy/caretaker for months already by the time their relationship changes. Nathan needed someone to care for him, and Gabriel was perfect for it.

We didn’t really get to know Gabriel a whole lot other than that he was a teacher and kinky. We did get to see how patient and caring he was though, which made me like his character.

Nathan was definitely OTT sometimes, but it was endearing all the same. His lack of a filter was cute, and a character trait I enjoy a lot, but it felt like beating a dead horse after a while in this story.

Overall, it was perfectly enjoyable, but for a book focused on kink, surprisingly.. bland? Maybe I’ve just strayed so far off the vanilla-path that there needs to be something crazy for me to notice, lol. The puppy play parts of the book made me smile though, I only wished there was more of it.

Book safety! Spoilers ahead.

You’d sat down for just a minute, God only knows why, and had forgotten to get up. We’re not doing that again. You scared the hell out of me. I thought you were dead or something.’»

«Walking around unfulfilled and knowing you were missing something would make you a miserable person to be around.»

«Nathan might be my little space cadet sometimes, but he put a lot of effort into trying to understand his emotions and reactions. He was a funny little nut. That was one of the reasons I liked him so much.»

Okay , how to make sense of what's in my head ...
l have just read my first ever D/s puppy play story,
l am shocked to say, l actually get it ,
M.A Innes writes an insightful and very enlightening, erotic story .

Nathan is a very smart , bright, kind young man, with a very analytical brain,
he has a successful job , but is lacking in social skills.
Nathan has never understood all the fuss about sex , what was so special about it ?
Nothing and no one in his life had given him much pleasure .
His inner monologues , constantly debating , trying to figure things out was a bit sad,
however , he is so sweet and cute when his mental filter doesn't work.

Gabriel is Nathan's roommate, he is a teacher and a very organised, obsessive person.
Gabe is also a Dom , who enjoys alternative sex scenes,
What starts out as helping Nathan to function easier in his daily life soon turns in to more.
He quickly notices Nathan's submissive personality , when told what to do, Nathan functions better,
when his choices are removed he is much more relaxed.

A sleepy confession sends Nathan on a journey of discovery ,
a whole new world that is an eye opener for him.
The more Nathan reads about D/s lifestyle , the more he realises that's what he's been needing all along.

The puppy play, l felt was more of a psychological and emotional need.
The need to belong , to be taken care of, loved, petted and ordered around,
and most of all, pleasing his master grounded Nathan , and stopped his mind from always analysing.

This book is very well written , with so much depth and detail.
Another taboo/alternative lifestyle story l have enjoyed reading, from this author.

An ARC was given for an honest review.

This was super cute. I know it states in the blurb that this is a puppy play novel, and it does contain some puppy play, but mostly it is an incredibly sweet romance between two roommates and a lovely story about finding out who you are and what you want.

Nathan is a forensic accountant who lives in his own head. He has a squirrely brain and no brain to mouth filter. He is sweetness personified but really do need a keeper. He has one, in the shape of his roommate Gabriel, who discreetly manages Nathan whilst quietly obsessing over how attractive he is and how much he wants him.

Nathan is a virgin, not from any hard held beliefs, but only due to the fact that he has never gotten interested enough in anyone to go any further than casual dating. He is not sure if he is gay or straight or bi or something else, because nothing feels right. When he accidentally finds out that his roommate seems to be into BDSM and puppy play however, he is intrigued.

Nathan is a great character, because not only is he completely clueless, he is also curious and has no social inhibitions, so he googles and asks the questions the reader has about the lifestyle and the kink. This is a common theme in M.A. Innes' work, that the author always tries to educate the reader as to what the participants may get out of the specific kink. And he always manages to do it in a way that never makes it seem like he is info-dumping on you.

This is a lot more romance than it is erotica. Despite the puppy play and the steamy scenes, the main focus of the book is Nathan's road to discovery of who he is and what he wants. Very sweet story and probably a good gateway book for people interested in puppy play as a kink, explanatory without being preachy and nothing too hardcore for a newbie.

Nathan was adorable... until he wasn't. His lack of brain to mouth filter was cute the first few times, but it got very annoying as I kept reading. Also annoying, what was the point of that crap with his friends? That was so unnecessary.

I'm not giving this book any rating but not because it was bad - it wasn't. I just don't know how many stars should I give it. I'm afraid I wouldn't give the book a justice because puppy play is not of my usual interest. But I do think it's good to leave your reading comfort zone once in a while for something different.
I also have no idea if the kink itself was reliably portrayed by the author. If I had to, I'd rate this book somewhere between 3 and 3.5 stars, maybe 4?

Nathan was cute. I liked his curiosity and lack of inhibitions. I think he might have some kind of ADD (attention deficit disorder) but I'm not sure if I'm right. He behaved like an overexcited labrador puppy without a filter. It was adorable but also tiresome sometimes.

Gabriel was patient and understanding.

The story itself is sweet, more romance than erotica, which was good for me, but it lacked dynamics. It's rather focused on Nathan's road to self-discovery, on his wants and needs so there's a lot of talking and repetitions. But don't get me wrong, I don't diminish the talking. I think communication is the key to everything! It's just my general feeling it'd be better paced if there was more action.

Would I recommend this book? Yes.
Would I read it again? No.
I just prefer real dogs and their training ;)

An enjoyable kink but a little too slow for me - lots of talking, thinking, talking .... meanwhile the dynamic was kind of in limbo. This could have really taken off with some pace !

So, more puppy play. Puppy play is hot right now. Okay.

Well, I don't mind it because it is sweet and care taking oh and kinky.

Nathan is socially awkward and isn't sure what is sexuality is.

Then, hmmm sub. And then we get a slow seduction and plenty of consent and discussion which is nice.

What works is that the couple works and the drama about friends judging a relationship is an interesting.

However, the conflict isn't well paced or well developed.

First of all, the book was a lot sweeter than many books featuring BDSM, even ones with puppy play. I loved that Nathan and Gabriel built a friendship before becoming lovers, and to me, Gabriel’s protective nature fit Nathan to a T. They were perfect together, and made total sense as a couple. The way the author described how Nathan never found his ‘label’ appealed to me, and also made the book different from many other books in this niche and genre.

The author clearly knows the scene, and I’m always happy to see consent featured prominently in these types of books. Through Nathan’s perspective we learn a lot about BDSM and puppy play in particular, because he’s new to the scene and Gabriel has so much to explain to him. I think this could have been a tad shorter, as it got a bit long winded at some points.

What stands out as well, is that the ‘level of sexiness’ as I always call it is actually low, especially considering the genre. The focus is way more on the relationship, and the emotional aspects of the play, than on the sex. There’s sex for sure, but it doesn’t even come into play till later and even then, it develops slowly. I can certainly appreciate books where the sex is way more prominent (hell, I write some pretty steamy stuff myself), but this book shows it doesn’t need to be that way in order to be captivating.

The writing is straight forward, but works well for me. I loved Nathan’s rambling inner dialogue and his lack of filter. There were a few mistakes here and there, but nothing big, and it certainly wasn’t enough to yank me out of the story. I was very happy to see this author has more books published, so I’ve added a few to me to read pile.

This was another sweet puppy play story by M.A. Innes. Nathan and Gabriel were a cute couple and I enjoyed their dynamic. The two roommates have been in a pseudo Dom/sub relationship since they moved in together. This is the story of them taking it to the next level and Nathan figuring out his sexuality and his inclinations.

Unfortunately, there was quite a bit of repetition and the pacing was slow. There were parts where I was skimming. It just didn't capture me the way some of the author's other stories did.

I really didn't think I'd like the puppy play aspect of this romance and I actually only listened because it fit a challenge and I wanted to know who these guys were (as they come up as side characters in a different series)...boy, was I wrong. It's a kink I never thought I'd get into, but listening to Kenneth Obi narrate the tale makes me question all my soft limits at this point. Makes me wonder if MAI writes a book about even more obscure or taboo aspects of BDSM, and has KO perform the audio, whether I could challenge myself even more.

Something to think about...

I liked his story but there was so much repetition over the first several chapters. And while him having no filter and saying everything he was thinking was funny, it got a bit old after a while.

I really did like the MCs and thought they were perfect together.

1.5 stars. Badly, if at all, edited, weak story, lack of focus on the kink that was supposed to be the heart of the story, manufactured conflict for zero reason. I started skimming around 75%, but I had skimmed prior to that. Lack of character development, just an all around fail. Plus there were just too many questionable things, from possible asexual erasure to the fact that Nathan read as neuro-atypical but it was treated as a quirk. Glad it was from KU.

An Absolutely Amazing Story
Sensual - Sweet - Sexy
I fell in love with Gabriel and Nathan <3
I laughed so hard at some of Nathan's antics - He was so easy to connect with Gabriel was the perfect partner for Nathan - his patience and understanding of Nathan and his needs was an exceptional example of a Master/pet relationship
I cried a few times (can't tell you -spoiler)
I really want to know more about the supporting characters I met in this story -
I have never read this genre before - so I was a bit hesitant going in - I have to say I will be reading more of Innes work.
The writing was flawless -
The editing - practically perfect

I was pleasantly surprised by this new to me author. Since there are not a whole lot of M/M puppy play books, I decided to give this one a try. I couldn't put it down and now I'm interested in Eric and Marcus' story. I think I'll read that one next!

No filter

Another beautiful kinky love story by M.A. Innes. Moderately steamy. Highly humorous. Nate’s lack of a filter coupled with his tendency to inadvertently voice his internal dialogue, had me laughing out loud throughout this story.

Cute

I really liked seeing Nathan find himself and I’m glad he found and was open to Gabriel. The puppy play was cute and I liked learning about how they played. His friends were jerks though, and I wish that part had more resolution. As it was it felt like unnecessary drama.

Huh...

Usually I read these stories just to get away and close my mind off, but this one did not get me there. I just didn't like Nathan nor Gabriel at all.

Nathan really was portrayed like he had some issues, not that he was quirky and Gabriel was creepy.
