Here are a few things I don't think are funny (or romantic!): a mother teasing her son about his erections; a sister discussing the size of her brother's penis; an uncle recommending a vibrating butt plug; cousins joking that their parents would have an orgy if only one of the uncles would wear a strap-on; your parents suggesting you need a dildo.
For example:
Mom to son: I knew you had feelings for your friend Jason's penis ... It saddens me that when I dig through your personal items in your room, I find no evidence of the lifestyle that has been chosen for you by God, such as a butt plug or a dildo ... Shut the fuck up so I can finish this.
Sister to brother: It's totally cool you want to stuff the sausage in the poop canal.
Uncle to nephew and son: We enjoy spicing things up in the bedroom and trying out new toys. In fact, there is a fantastic vibrating butt plug ... May I suggest a toy that hits your prostate?
Families don't interact like this! And if they do, they need serious psychological help.
That kind of incestuous, OTT sexual "banter" isn't funny. It's disturbing and gross.
Sorry, but NOPE! If you hang with me on GR, you know I'm the least prudish person ever, but this book crossed so many lines, I need massive amounts of brain bleach.
Ridiculous pseudo-sitcom humour isn't funny. Were it not for the gay, this is something Trump would find amusing.

One thing that I truly appreciated about this story was that it felt pretty unique.
However, the book title, "Sex Ed," did make me think that this would be a story about 25 y.o. nurse Tyler giving inexperienced, 23 y.o. Jaxson 'lessons' to get him up to speed sexually, which wasn't the case really at all.
Instead, this was more the story of a shy virgin meeting a guy that he liked and them getting to know one another, mostly *out* of bed.
The story was pretty hilarious, with Jaxson being one of the most accident prone characters I've read in quite some time.
I mean, really, forgetting to use lube with a Fleshlight? Come on! Who fucking does that? OUCH!
BUT...
While the story was extremely funny, there were times when the humor really was just too much, feeling like it was trying too hard.
Now and again, the jokes felt like that one friend of yours who puts the gas to the floorboard -- no matter the road ahead. You do have to hit the brakes now and again, so the story occasionally ended up in the proverbial weeds by going way too over the top with the comedy.
Point in case, the banter between Jaxson's twin, Sophie, and his (non-biological) 'cousin', Ethan. Sophie often came across as a completely mean bitch, while Ethan was just desperate and horny. It was way too much as far as I was concerned.
So yeah, keeping the humor in check a bit more, knowing when enough was enough, would've added another star to my rating for this one.
BUT (again)...
I did still really enjoy this story a lot and was totally in love with both Jaxson and Tyler.
In spite of the title, the book wasn't slathered in sex scenes, which I found refreshing. When there was sex, it felt appropriate vs. gratuitous. Plus, pretty hot. Just sayin'...
Pros and cons all weighed in, I'd rate this one at around 3.5 stars, mostly because it kept me smiling start to finish.
** Side Note: This story and the 'Tied Together' stories are all related to Heller's M/F "Moxie" series.
Moxie is Jaxson's mother and Ethan is the son of the MC's in 'Tied', who were Moxie's good friends in her books.

No, no no no. When Jaxson is DRUGGED in a bar, a nurse (Tyler) should NOT decide that this is the time to get a grind on, ON Jaxson, while Jaxson is blacking out...
That is just stupid, and makes me doubt Tyler's professionalism as well as his integrity as a person. *sigh*
This was definitely not for me; I'm normally all for snarky and fun characters, but Moxie (Jaxson's mother) was WAAAAAAYYY over-the-top, and in-your-face-transboundary...
So yeah, I tried, but stupidity and creepy mothers are not for me.

Not a HUGE fan of this cover, to be honest. The graphic IS a good representation of a scene from the book but I am not a fan or the typography. The title work lets this one down in a big way.
When a sex toy accident lands Jaxon in the ER he comes face to face with a pair of shamrock green eyes attached to the most gorgeous man he has ever seen. What ensues is a hilarious super sweet laugh out loud romance that I ADORED every minute of.
Honestly, this book was a riot from beginning to end. It was well written and well paced. It had SO many hilarious moments that had me laughing my ass off. It had witty banter. A few hot sex scenes (it is pretty slow burn). It was super sweet. Very low angst. Next to no drama. It had a plethora of AWESOME side characters. Including many from this author's previous books. In fact, this book features the children of the couples from The Chronicles of Moxie and Tied Together. It had two very likable and sweet main characters. All wrapped up in an OK epilogue. I would have liked to have gotten a look at this couple even further into the future. That said I am hoping that some of the other secondary characters will be getting books of their own soon so perhaps we will see this couple again in those books.
Two HUGE thumbs up from yours truly.

I really enjoyed the first 20% of the story, it was hilarious and I warmed up really fast to Jax.
The story overall was good and it keep me interested. I really Liked Tyler and deeply enjoyed his romance with Jax.
Sadly a few things dimished my enjoyment:
1. The people in Jax's life, it seemed like everyone was super inappropiate, don't get me wrong some moments were definitely funny but most of them were just cringe worthy, they had a weird relationship, there was zero privacy. Everyone knew everyone's business, not just family but friends and coworkers felt it was their right to know Jax's private life. it wasn't funny, it wasn't entertaining it was rude as hell.
2. Sophie, Jax's sister and Ethan, his best friend. OMG how i hated them! their bickering had me skipping pages! I think it was supposed to be funny as well but hell to the fucking no, they were annoying and rude and I just wanted them to shut the hell up.
This could have been a 4 star read for me but those little things ruined my personal experience but this was definitely funny and it had a lot of potential.
There were hints of maybe a spin-off. we'll see. hopefully we won't see Sophie.

SEX ED by ZB Heller was knock your socks off stellar. Extremely funny, with solid characters, no taboos and total acceptance, this story of self-love and personal growth nicely rounded out this first book for me by this author.
Jaxson was a delight. Naive in some ways and well beyond his years in others, he was by far my favourite character in this book. Growing up a nerd and being a 23 year old virgin with a gift in drawing comic strips immediately labels you in a negative context-but somehow through the awesome family Jaxon has, along with his twin sister Sophie, he's managed to just deal with, like, and accept who he is. He may not be the most extroverted person on the planet and may still have some insecurities but he deals with it through humour and oodles of it! The predicaments Jaxon has been through in his short life are tales that can be told to his grandchildren one day and they're unbelievably hilarious.
Having a boy crush on a gay-fictional character can be hard! Enter Tyler. Sexy ER nurse who's in the right place at the right time when Jaxon comes into the emergency room with an apparatus attached to his...you know what, monster man-hood! Only Tyler can hold it together and calm poor Jaxon when his sister and best friend are constantly bickering with each other and making the situation worse. Despite Jaxon's embarrassment he automatically feels comfortable with the gorgeous nurse with the emerald green eyes.
It's a small world in the town of Chicago where these gaggle of nerds live. Of course Jaxson's best friends dad knows the hot nurse from the ER and of course he ends up at family dinner! The best part of the story was when Jaxon's mother does everything in her arsenal to hook these two up, even going to far as making butt jokes and teaching them about lube and how to take in the...ahem...for the first time. Laugh out loud FUNNY.
Complete riot. The openness, total acceptance and non-issue of having a gay son is so prevalent through out the book. Not once did I feel sorry or sad for Jaxon and Tyler. Their sexual orientation was never a debate or a problem for anyone. Just like it shouldn't be. Helen did a fantastic job of writing a love story. Period. The catch and chase was cute, the falling in love was spot on and the writing was perfect and adorable and hilarious and I want more. So much more.
I have a feeling Jeff and the hot cop towards the end may have a role in Heller's next book-at least I hope so! As a huge fan of m/m tropes, this book was a pleasant surprise for me and an absolute pleasure to read.

El libro comienza muy bien, durante la primera parte ha habido momentos donde he llorado de la risa. Pero, a medida que la historia avanza he sentido que todo era... demasiado. This book is laugh out loud funny if you are into crude, sexual joke at the expense of a comic geek virgin. We have the characters from previous series, The Chronicle of Moxie and Tied Together. I never read Moxie, but in Tied Together I don't recall the characters being as crazy as here.
Jaxson the nerdy comic geek of a hero who I actually love. I find his POV's interesting and funny and he is so hopeless in the romance department that he virtually never date before, as oppose to his twin sister, Sophie who seems like super loose.
Tyler is the nurse who witnessed Jaxson's embarrassing moment in ER by trapping his dick in a sex toy. When Tyler turned out to be Uncle Brandon's colleague, they got the chance to interact again under the roof of the boisterous and overzealous Dane family.
We have Jaxson, the blushing virgin who is socially awkward and then we have solid, dependable Tyler who is turned on by his innocence. If this book is entirely about them both, I'm sold. I enjoy every of their little interaction, especially with Tyler being so patience and supportive of him. But I feel cheated when some of their important moments are gloss over. Seeing as Jaxson is a virgin, which is a big part of the story, I didn't even get to read about him receiving blowjob and rimming for the first time. I didn't even get to read about their first sleep over. Seriously, this is a big injustice. I'm in rage.
Instead of getting all the sweet bits between Jaxson and Tyler, we get plenty of Sophie and Ethan and Jaxson's coworker at the comic shop. Sophie and Ethan the enemies that bicker non stop, I mean every single words out of their mouth is to provoke each other. In the beginning I find it funny, but after awhile is getting old and I wish they just proceed to hate fucking each other already. I want to read more about Jaxson and Tyler, not Sophie and Ethan. And I find that the way Sophie's publicly announcing Jaxson's situation is not even remotely funny, I find it very demeaning, humiliating and embarrassing. Definitely not a big fan of her.
Overall, this is one romantic comedy between a geek and his Mr. Right is something I find humorous at time, but the supporting characters are simply over the top. Maybe fans who enjoy Moxie's version of humor might like this more. I'm uncomfortable when joke turned into embarrassment at the expense of other people.

I liked the two MCs and their story. I hated everything having to do with Jaxson's family. I had this on my kindle and was looking for a light, fun, sexy read, but I guess the humor just wasn't my thing.
I love a quirky, fun, family, but this one was just over the top and taking it too far. Jaxson's family apparently shows their love by embarrassing him and being overly involved in his sex life. They are self-absorbed, act like middle-schoolers, hit each other, and have no boundaries when it comes to privacy (and one of them is supposed to be the head of OB/GYN at the hospital!). When the uncle Jaxson confided in announces his secret to everyone at a family dinner Jaxson gets up and runs out. There is no guilt or empathy as the next day as both his twin sister and his best friend, decide to tell it to everyone he works with. Maybe if potty jokes, excessive discussions of the sex lives of your family, a lack of empathy, or even concern for your physical well-being ticks your boxes for quirky family fun, you might get more out of it than I did.
I was invested in Jaxson and Tyler's story and at about 40% I made the decision to skip any part of the book where anyone from Jackson's family appeared and this made the story much better. Jaxson is 23-year-old accident-prone, comic book nerd and a virgin. Tyler is the ER nurse that attended to him during a rather embarrassing incident (made extra awful by the presence of Jaxson's twin sister and his best friend who should have been thrown out of there). When they surprisingly meet again Tyler decides to take a chance and ask out the man he hasn't stopped thinking about. Tyler has recently taken custody of his 13-year-old nephew Colt (who is more mature than the adults in the story) and isn't sure if a relationship is a good idea, but his feelings for Jaxson won't let him stay away.
The romance was sweet and cute. I do wish there had been more on-page focus on the "Sex Ed" between Jaxson and Tyler, but we were just told about most of it. I was also pretty disappointed that Jaxson's first time was told from Tyler's POV only.
I did enjoy the romance, but all of the interactions around it really detracted from that story for me. Had there been more focus on just Jaxson and Tyler and Colt forging a relationship, this probably would have been a four star read for me. Also, there were some egregious grammatical and usage errors that could have picked up with a thorough proofread. For example, "prolific" instead of "prophylactic" antibiotics, "nine nine one" instead of "nine one one", among more minor errors.

The romance was sweet and cute. I do wish there had been more on-page focus on the "Sex Ed" between Jaxson and Tyler, but we were just told about most of it. I was also pretty disappointed that Jaxson's first time was told from Tyler's POV only.
I did enjoy the romance, but all of the interactions around it really detracted from that story for me. Had there been more focus on just Jaxson and Tyler and Colt forging a relationship, this probably would have been a four star read for me. Also, there were some egregious grammatical and usage errors that could have picked up with a thorough proofread. For example, "prolific" instead of "prophylactic" antibiotics, "nine nine one" instead of "nine one one", among more minor errors.

I enjoyed this book, the beginning was so funny and I was really excited. It felt like a romcom movie, but after a bit I lost interest in the OTT interaction from the side character. Personally Insta-love is not my thing. But it's a cute, low angst book with tons of jokes

When a mishap with a sex toy lands Jaxson in the ER, he meets Tyler, a sexy nurse. There is something about Jaxson that calls to Tyler, but Tyler isn't sure he is ready for a relationship with Jaxson with the life changes he's recently had to face, yet he isn't so sure he can resist him either.
I'll start by saying I have never laughed so hard or so much while reading a book. This story was hilarious! I absolutely loved Jaxson and Tyler. They were such lovable characters. The story was entertaining, well-written and paced well. Jaxson is one of those characters that you say "it can only happen to you". The situations he finds himself in are entertaining and out of this world funny.
"I went to Reed’s office and threw my messenger bag down. The room always smelled like pot, mostly because Reed, a thirty-two-year-old man, was high about ninety percent of the time. The other ten percent was when he was sleeping, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he tried to find a way to be stoned then, too. After I dropped my stuff, I quickly looked through the new boxes and then went to the front of the store to start my day. The store hadn’t opened yet, but as soon as I walked in, four pairs of eyes zoomed straight toward me. There stood Reed, Jeff, Ethan—who worked at the store part time for some extra cash while going to school—, and Sophie. She usually hung around because she was my sister, and she got off on annoying everyone else, especially Ethan and Jeff. The mood of the room seemed dire, like the time Jeff’s beloved hamster, Gunther, died after he devoured one of Reed’s joints in his office. Jeff had mourned the hamster’s death, while Reed mourned the loss of the stash that he paid a ridiculous amount for. Something about it being a unique hybrid of two types of plants or something weird like that. The hamster, Gunther, ended up at the store after Jeff’s little brother, Tommy, tried to give it a bath in the toilet. Gunther almost went down the drain when Tommy flushed the toilet to rinse him off. Jeff’s mother caught Tommy as the accidental hamster slaughter was about to occur and was ready to release Gunther into the wild. Tommy became inconsolable, so Jeff offered to keep him at the store, telling his brother he could visit Gunther anytime he wanted. Two years later and Jeff was still making excuses to Tommy on why he couldn’t come to the store, instead of confessing the truth of Gunther's demise."
This book is filled with a host of secondary characters that add even more hilarity to the story through their witty banter. The romance between Jaxson and Tyler moved at a natural and organic pace. They had an amazing chemistry and connection. While the story is a slow burn, it's still filled with steamy and swoon-worthy moments. This was a low angst, sweet and enjoyable romance I'd highly recommend. I just wouldn't recommend reading it in public. People look funny at you when you're laughing uncontrollably!! :D

This is the first book I have read by the author. I picked it up on a whim after hearing that this book was hilarious from several different people and had to see what the fuss was all about. Woah!! They were right! This is one of the funniest books I have read in a while. It kind of reminds me of Tara Sivec’s chocolate lovers series in terms of the humor and family “dysfunction”. Gosh, it would be so much fun to see a crossover with the Chocolate Lovers series and this one. The only difference is that this one is an MM romantic comedy. For me, this added to the uniqueness of the story because all the MM books I have read are more on the serious side. This one though, is not! So, if you enjoy romantic comedies and/or MM romances, this is the book for you!

So finding love and companionship isn’t at the top of his to-do list. But when a shy and slightly awkward man comes into the ER with a “masturbation issues” (you guys are going to LOVE the jackhammer story) he can’t help but become attracted.
What happens next is a series of hilarious moments that you don’t want to miss out on. I promise, this book will make you laugh! It may not be a serious novel, but the book does hold a lot of promise when it comes to finding love and even loving yourself for who you are. And with that, I would highly recommend this book to you. Just remember, it’s not your typical romantic comedy. It is an MM one with some sexual scenes and a lot of sexiness!

Sex Ed by ZB Heller
M/M romantic comedy. Stands alone but ties into all of her other books.

I am not usually a big m/m reader, but I enjoyed ZB Heller's Tied Together so much that I decided to read Sex Ed as well. And I absolutely fell in love with the nerdy, gay hero, Jaxson (who is Moxie’s son if you have read those books). Jaxson also has a twin sister that grew up speaking for him and still does.
“You need to get as much dick and ass as possible. Years have gone by while your asshole has been empty. Your dick is about to shrivel up and fall off if you don’t start using it.”
Jaxson’s inner thoughts were so freaking funny!
“Of course, in my fantasy, he’s not wearing any underwear because my jaw would get sore from pulling all of these articles of clothes off. I could get TMJ and have to get a night guard for my teeth, and who looks sexy in a night guard? Then, I would never be able to give Kaleb the blowjob he desires, because I would be afraid of racking up dental bills from all this TMJ I would be getting.”
He was perfectly nerdy and sweet and innocent at the same time. But HOW??? He came from a family of loud, completely inappropriate lunatics. They were funny at first, but by the end, I really hated his twin sister Sophie, and I wasn’t really a fan of his family. But I LOVED Jaxson.
When Jaxson had a little incident with a new sex toy and had to go to the hospital, his connection with the male nurse was immediate. Luckily for him, he was introduced again to Tyler in a social situation a few days later. This is good, because neither could get the other out of their minds.
Tyler had his own baggage and was really in no place to be starting a new relationship, but he just couldn’t resist the sweet, inexperienced, nerdy 23 year old. I loved how he was in no rush to pop his cherry until they knew Zander was more than ready. With as much sex talk as there was, there wasn’t a lot of actual sex, and that’s OK, I really enjoyed reading about the relationship developing, and that they took it slow.
Tyler wrapped his warm hand around my shaft for the first time. I thought my insides were going to burst into flames.
Words rushed from my mouth, “Oh, Fucking Jesus Christ on a Passover Seder Plate.”
I laughed a lot during the book, but after a while Sophie really started to take away from the charm of the book. She is snarky and funny at first, but NEVER.LETS.UP. and her constant nasty comments to Ethan really took away from the thing I loved, which was the interaction between Jaxson & Tyler. I also felt that at times, ZB Heller tried too hard to be over-the-top funny where it didn’t need it. The sweet romance didn’t need forced humor to be enjoyable, but luckily, it wasn't WAY too much.

•Some strange word choices and formatting (type not justified) that I didn’t love; it could have used one more round of editing.
The Down & Dirty:
The combination of great main characters and sweet romance made Sex Ed by ZB Heller a really fun and unique read. I absolutely fell in love with the nerdy, sweet, shy and virginal Jaxson, and his inner dirty thoughts were the funniest part of the story to me. His family, especially his sister, were funny at first, but were just too much, too over-the top, to the point that they took away from the sweet and funny romance that was developing between the nerdy comic book artist and the nurse. All-in-all I still really enjoyed the story, but I think I would have enjoyed it even more if the side characters didn’t play as large a role. ZB Heller doesn’t need to try to be funny, the natural humor comes out in her writing. Her trying too hard were the only things that took away from this sweet, funny, nerdy, gay romance.
Rating: 4.25 Stars, 4 Heat.

This started off ok, I was laughing a lot. Then it just got to much. It ended up being quite ridiculous. The editing was SHOCKING! And I'm not normally a stickler on that if I'm enjoying a story, but because I lost interest it started to bug the crap out of me. Also the best friend and sister need to disappear. I didn't like them, and there constant bickering and taking over the spotlight throughout drove me batshit crazy. I'm not sure how I felt in the end, but I really don't think I liked it. Anyway moving on.

When the first two words in a book are ‘pubic hair’ it kind of sets the tone for the rest of the story – and believe me those were just tame words to lubricate my mind for the rest of this hilarious read from Zolie Heller. I have read every book released by this author and she never fails to shock me with her ‘no subject is barred’ approach to her writing. I laughed so many times reading this story and also read bits of it out loud to my husband too.
If you have read previous books by this author you will be familiar with some of the characters in this story but it is a stand alone read so you can jump right in with this one. Jaxson is a 23 year old virgin. He works in a comic book shop and would one day love to be a published comic book illustrator/author. He is also a twin to his eccentric sister, Sophie.
One thing you will learn about the Dane family is that they have no verbal filters – at all. There are no ‘taboo’ subjects among them and this means that ‘privacy’ really has no place in their family home.
“You need to get as much dick and ass as possible. Years have gone by while your asshole has been empty. Your dick is about to shrivel up and fall off if you don’t start using it.”
Jaxson has always been attracted to guys but has never really acted on his desire to be with someone special. It is a shame then that when he meets someone who he would love to get up close and personal to, it is the hot male nurse assisting him at the ER after getting a home masterbation device stuck on his penis!
This is just the beginning of this hilarious story of Jaxson’s cray cray family and the hot, sexy, nurse Tyler. Amongst all the comedic sides to this story is a really sweet, coming of age love story weaved throughout it. Jaxson really does lack confidence when it comes to doing things that he is afraid he will fail at, the fear of rejection seems to drive a lot of that self talk. However, the gorgeous Tyler knows just how to bring him out of his shell.
Being with Tyler is a life changing experience for Jaxson, he always dreamed he would find someone he could share his life with and love. Tyler is more sexually experienced than Jaxson and he is happy to take the lead in his sexual education. Of course, he also gets plenty of unwanted advice from his family….
“Don’t use those icky flavored condoms,” my mother called out. “Use lots of lube and remember to push out when he pushes in. Oh, and soak your tushy in Epsom salt afterward.”
Jaxson is slowly but surely letting his guard down and learning to trust someone but he always seems to be waiting for the other shoe to drop. When Tyler does something that leaves Jaxson feeling a bit betrayed he quickly retreats back into his turtle shell. He knew that it was too good to be true, he isn’t good enough to be with a man like Tyler.
However, Tyler is not the sort of guy you can ignore for too long and when he wants something he doesn’t give up. He always ends up on top…
There is so much more I could say about this story but you really need to strap yourself in and enjoy the ride on your own.

Sex Ed by ZB Heller is an MM romantic comedy.
I read this at the request of a friend and I’m not sure I’ll be taking anymore book recommendations from them. While this was funny and I did laugh, it fell flat. I regretted putting pause on the series I was reading, and enjoying, to read this for them. Maybe they talked it up too much and just oversold it; which in turned ended up ruining the book for me.
This book had the potential to be more, but it’s lacking the craft to fully entertain, and it’s missing all the goodness in the middle. The two MC never fully form a relationship before you have the post-middle break up and then them getting back together was not the strong reunion that readers want. It was just stated in a time jump, that they were now back together(Oh goody…..) Why are there so many time jumps and why are they each like two weeks??? Like I would like more chemistry and more of a storyline for our two MC’s, then all the time jumps. The supporting/side characters, get more time in this book than the two main MC’s.
I just kept waiting on the relationship to form and take off between the two MC’s and it never really did. Well it might have but it happened during the time jump and we missed it….. 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️

DNF at around 70%. This book gave me the major squicks. I bought this because I adore Michael Lesley and he’s the best thing about this. The writing is just ICKY. From the language used when talking about their dirty thoughts about the other person, to Tyler getting up in Jaxson’s business after he knew someone had slipped something in Jaxson’s drink, to the obnoxious over use of the word pu$$y, to gross joking commentary about teenage boys body parts, to when I finally threw in the towel, at a family member a *gay uncle,* teaching the gay virgin nephew how to do the sex with pretend blow jobs with bananas. Seriously, did a 14 year old boy wrote this? There was nothing really redeeming about this except Jaxson is cute I guess, but the virgin trope is tired… and it really felt like this author was trying really hard to write like another popular author who is great at sexual humor but it fell FLAT. Like. Nope. Glad I bought the audio 80% off so it’s not a huge loss.

Sex Ed by Z.B. Heller is a rom-com with high comedy. Like more comedy than anything else for sure. Jaxson's character was truly fabulous. There's something about a shy and clumsy guy that calls to me. Add in that he's a virgin and you can see how the humor is born.
I would say that Jaxson was by far my favorite character in this. It's very hard not to love and deeply sympathize with him. Tyler (an ER nurse) is really the perfect fit for someone like Jaxson. He will need someone with medical training to keep him alive with how accident prone he is. I really was laughing my butt off with how Tyler and Jaxson meet. It's one of those stories that if you heard one of your friends tell you it, you wouldn't believe them.
If you happen to have read Z.B. Heller's Moxie series, Jaxson is Moxie's son. No, you don't need to read the Moxie series to get this. It's a standalone through and through. That's just a tidbit for fans.
Now, there are varying degrees of humor. My favorite is dry humor always has been always will be. I wouldn't say this was dry humor. It's slapstick at times and occasionally way over the top. When the author reels it in the balance equals good comedy. There's also an element of crudeness which I don't have an issue with at all. I tend to cringe at those sort of jokes but I can see the appeal some have toward it.
I did have one issue with this story. I felt really bad for Jaxson when SO many nasty and crude jokes were at his expense. A lot by family and friends. There's ribbing and then there's joking around to pull a laugh without really caring about someone's feelings and that's where this fell. I found myself analyzing if Jaxson was shy and socially awkward because of the, for lack of a better word, bullying he endured his whole life. This is just a hard limit for me for personal reasons.

The humor is a bit over the top, yeah? I love a funny book. Give me a book that makes me laugh out loud as the MCs fall in love and I am a happy camper. This book did do that, I was laughing and giggling throughout...even when I was rolling my eyes at some of the antics.
Side characters are abundant in this story. Jaxson's mom was ridiculous. The relationship between Jaxson's sister, Sophie, and his best friend, Ethan, was just too much at times. I get it, I am just like Sophie. I cannot help myself when it comes to insults and quips around certain people...but even I wince at myself sometimes. But these two were unapologetic.
Okay, but let us get past the supporting cast and talk about Jax and Tyler. They each have their own hangups. Jax is a virgin and struggles with self-esteem issues. Tyler has just taken on a huge responsibility and isn't sure how to juggle that with a new relationship. Especially with someone who would require a bit more hand-holding throughout.
For a book entitled Sex-Ed, there isn't a lot of sex. It is more a book of two men who are navigating a fledgling friendship that turns into more because they have so much chemistry. Now, even with the slight amount of sex it still felt like the right amount? It was well placed in the storyline and it was still pretty hot.
I wish there had been more page time dedicated to these two instead of all the time spent with the extra people. Sisters and moms and extended family and friends take up a lot of page time. And the humor could have notched it down just a tad...sometimes I found myself laughing and then tapering off wondering when the "jokes" would end.
Of all the side characters, I do hope we get Jeff's story. ;)

Hmm... I'll just lead with what I did not like. The comedic factor in this book was way OTT. By that, I'm not referring to crude or raunchy humor. I am not prudish. This was mostly just too cheesy for words. I get that it was intentionally meant to be humorous but it bypassed the realm of humor into ridiculous. The first 30% of the book is filled with enough slapstick and cheesy off color humor to cause one's eyes to be stuck in the under brow position. It just was not funny. The author tries too hard to make every situation humorous, at the expense of the story. Some situations should be treated better than a joke...

I wanted so much to like this book. I'm going to be fair and say, I loved Jaxson. He is a GREAT character. He is an adorably awkward and shy, but very sweet comic book geek. Tyler is also a good character, with the exception of the above mentioned spoiler. I would have liked more scenes with them getting to know one another. The awful comedy variety special took up too much space in this book; and for that it gets only 2 stars from me. One star if not for Jaxson.

Imagine Tell Me It's Real with a virgin MC and less orginality in concept. Then hone in a very sexually repressive family with very liberal ideas of giving, sharing and receiving, add a bit of cute mishap charm and viola, you've got yourself a Sex-Ed. Btw, the title is highly irrelavant to the story since it felt like the author just added two little snippets (totally unnecessary) to keep a facade of relation between the two. But I went with it.
What I couldn't stomach was the overzellous use of patients of mental issues as topics of jokes which seemed too sure of themselves. So, this book is very nascent when it comes to romance and wooing given the age of characters. The only thing is that if you can get past a half-incestuous bickering between two cousins which never comes to fruition and a virgin who will see stars as soon as he's dicked out, then you may like this. Like it for an insight into a virgin's mind when he's not too fond of losing it but has to cos of his parents and society's expectations or not. Bluhrghh!

The blurb is what caught my interest and had me taking a chance on it, because who doesn’t love seeing the geeky, adorkable character get their happily ever after? And while there were a few things that didn’t quite hit the mark for me, Jaxson, Tyler and their journey to their HEA was practically perfect! There are a lot of humorous moments, of all degrees, but there is also a whole lot of heart in the mix that made it difficult to put down and kept a dopey smile on my face until the very end.
Jaxson really is seriously all kinds of adorkable and is very comfortable in his own skin, especially with the way his family is ~ they would have the Devil looking for a place to hide when they get going. He has his insecurities tend to mess with his head, but his sense of humor, quick wit and heart make it difficult to not fall for him.
Tyler, for lack of a better description, is simply a really good guy. It may make him sound boring, but it’s the most apt and precise way to describe him. He loves his family, his job and is conscientious of how his actions may affect others. He’s sweet and charismatic with a great sense of humor and loads of patience.
The incident that brings about Jaxson and Tyler’s first collision is nothing short of painful. When I realized what was going to happen I cringed because even I know the in’s and out’s of what one is supposed to do with THAT. But after that I absolutely loved watching as Jax and Tyler got to know each other and became more. It was endearing, sweet, funny and smexy as they dealt with the various obstacles in their way and became stronger because of it.
This is my first read by the author and I really enjoyed it. The writing was engaging and flowed well throughout and the dual 1st person POV was done very well. And for the most part I loved the supporting cast of characters, some more than others, but they all made the story come alive.
My only issue, one that I waffled over for quite some time as to if it should affect my rating ~ which as you can see I did include to make this review as honest as possible ~ was that I didn’t find all the comedic parts funny. Some made me cringe and speed read through them and I’d put it at an almost 50/50 split on my reactions. This is very much a “It’s not you, it’s me” situation, what we find funny is a personal and sometimes minute to minute thing, and I know that some will be blowing snot bubbles because they find everything funny, some will be like me and others just won’t be into it. But what kept me turning the pages was Jax and Tyler and their journey, so I focused on them and it was more than worth it in the end!

I really loves this romantic comedy. I smiled and laugh and read the best lines out loud.
It is adorable and sweet and zany. A bit over the top, yes, but super fun and light with characters that although they feel kooky also feel real.
I had no idea when I picked this up the ZB Heller had already told the Mom and Dad love story and the Uncles as well. I didn't need those to enjoy this one but I will be picking them up.
Jaxson and Tyler are pretty normal in the vortex of the crazy that is Jaxson foul mouthed, oversharing, sex positive, very loving family.
Tyler just is really into Jaxson and its grand. Who wouldn't be into this super smart sexy geek? He holds his own by electing to raise his nephew and being really witty,
Jaxson is everything. I love the virgin hero trope and the accident prone trope and I love why Jaxson is still a virgin He is super witty too.
There is a late in the book conflict that lasts a bit too long and I could use more Tyler and Jaxson time in relation to the wonderful secondary characters but overall this is a real charmer of a book.
There is great quote about comedy that opens the book and I think Heller does a great job of letting the situations be funny and the emotion be real.

A Joyfully Jay review.

Sex Ed is a humorous, light story that incorporates some nice, silly fun. It also features some of my favorite tropes with a geeky, virgin hero and there is lots of fun superhero and comic book geekery built into the story as well. Heller does a nice job here combining the humor with some more serious themes and that helps to give the story some depth even with a lot of the craziness going on here. The guys have a fun meet cute as they encounter each other in the ER and I think they work well together. Tyler is generally patient and understanding with Jaxson, taking things at his pace and making sure he is comfortable as they move forward in their sexual relationship (in fact, despite the blurb and suggestiveness of the cover, this isn’t a particularly sex heavy book and the physical relationship between the men develops relatively slowly). I also really liked the dynamic between Tyler and his nephew Colton and how much priority Tyler puts on his role as a new parent. Colton is snarky and charming (though seemingly mature beyond his years) and I liked the connection between Tyler and Colton, as well as how they bring Jaxson into the relationship.

M/M romance with LOTS of humor. Humor is great. I love humor. Unfortunately this was not my brand. I really liked the MCs, Tyler and Jaxson, but the supporting characters were pretty mean-spirited with their banter. I couldn’t be friends with anyone like that. The “situations” Jaxson got himself into made me chuckle, poor guy. He just couldn’t win. I also enjoyed the storyline with Tyler and his nephew. The sexy times were minimal which I liked since Jaxson was a virgin and Tyler appropriately wanted to take it slow. I would’ve loved this story without the supporting characters. As is, it was ok.
