What happens when the world thought you were dead and suddenly, now you are alive?
Ben Turner is back! Not quite as dead as everyone thought, fresh out of a nine-month stay in prison, and back home in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. Having been dishonorably discharged after charges of desertion from the military, this once well-loved local has fallen from the top. With no plans for college or the future, and hated by the town that once loved him, Ben feels like he’s drowning all over again.
Juniper is pregnant, alone, and running from her crazy fiancé. With only enough money for a one-way bus ticket, she heads to Kill Devil Hills, NC, a town she vacationed in as a little girl, a town she knows, come February, will have plenty of beach rentals to lie low in for the next couple months. Except she didn’t plan on getting caught on day one by the man living next door. Ben. He’s a man who has even more problems than she does, but maybe it’ll take a man like Ben to save her life.
**NEW ADULT ROMANCE** Recommended for 18+. Standalone. Fourth (and final) book in the KILL DEVIL HILLS Series.
Hi! I'm Sarah Darlington. I write contemporary romance books that are steamy, sexy, and sweet. I love creating book boyfriends you won’t soon forget, and the heroines who give them hell.
Adrift is the fourth book in the Kill Devil Hills series.
Ben Turner is back! The ocean had literally chewed him up and spit him back out. He’s no longer the town’s golden boy. Hated by the town that once loved him, Ben feels like he’s drowning all over again.
Juniper is pregnant, alone and running from her crazy fiancé. She finds herself in Kill Devil Hills, a town that brings back to her happy memories from when she was a child. She didn't plan on staying there, but she knows Kill Devil Hills was the perfect place to hide, so she stayed.
I was really excited to finally get Ben’s story. I had a lot of questions running through my head about his fake death. Like WHY? What were you thinking? How could you?…
So when I figured it out his “reason”, I was like REALLY? Sorry, but for me, it wasn’t a good one. All the damaged he caused. To his family. To Georgie. To Sydney.
Then we have Juniper. She didn't know about Ben's past, which I liked. She was just a girl trying to protect herself and her baby.
I enjoyed watching Ben & Juniper start out as friends and become more. Even though, Ben was a little frustrating at times, I liked them together.
I was hoping there would be more interaction between Ben and Georgie. You know, after what she did because of him... but it didn't happen.
Overall, It was an ok read for me. Everything wrapped up too quickly for my taste, but I still enjoyed it.
Adrift was oddly enough my first Sarah Darlington read and the fourth and final book of a series, and while Adrift had solid legs and stood well on its own, I feel a strong desire to read the previous books for my own enjoyment. All of the primary and secondary characters were interesting and compelling, each with their own unique quirks. I was enamored with and curious about the complicated and complex character of Ben. The plot was active with a large cast of characters and provided a bit of everything - a faked death, strangers hiding their pasts, a bit of danger, suspense, intrigue, a new romance, a fresh start, and steamy sensual scenes. Despite a storyline heavy with two of my least favorite tropes of angst and pregnancy, the author’s writing style and craftily paced tale held my attention and kept me engaged and intrigued from beginning to end.
This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
Well all I can say is that this book is not for me, it's actually a great book the plot is okay even the writing style and characters but I had lot of issues with it. I feel like lots of stuff about the love interest was rushed, insta love not well potrayed just gets on my nerve and this did. This book would have been 4 stars worthy but the cheesiness and cliche that is known in lots of romance novels were just everywhere.
One of the few things I like about the book is the guy's history, that's crazy and original.
After reading the first 3 books in this series, I was very curious about Ben Turner. Because his ‘death’ (which was fake) was the cause for some emotional reactions in the previous books. His sisters and friends all reacted in different ways on his ‘death' as we can read in their stories.
So, to then to discover that Ben was still alive made me very curious about him and his reasons for doing it. Because there has to be a good reason to let your family and friends believe that you’re dead! And I can imagine that it must be very hard to come back to them and deal with their hurt and pain.
Just like in the previous stories, the writer kept the story light but still emotional. That’s one of the things that I like about her writing. This story isn’t only about Ben, it’s also about Juniper and her problems. It was wonderful to see how both felt a connection from the first moment, how they respected each other feelings and even in the beginning when they were strangers to each other, they took care of the other one. I liked that.
The story is told from both POV’s. Ben’s character is very caring, he’s a good guy and Juniper is strong in her own way. She comes from an abusing relationship and yes, she stayed too long in it but like so many, she was looking for love by the wrong person. I’m very glad that she found Ben and his family. It was great seeing the other characters from the previous books again. Although we got an epilogue at the end of the story. I did feel that the story was a bit rush in the end. And I would have loved some more information about certain things. But ‘Adrift’ was a good end to a lovely series.
I'm so sad to see this series come to an end! It's probably my favorite new adult series out there, I've loved these characters so much, and have really enjoyed the continuing storyline from book to book. I feel like I've been a part of the Turner family for so long that I'm finding it hard to say good-bye.
And now for the conclusion to the series we finally get the infamous Ben Turner's story! I really didn't know what to expect out of Ben, other than we know he faked his death and put his family through unbearble heartache- with some really tough consequences. But in Adrift we get the chance to get inside his head- see what makes him tick and learn why he did what he did. Since he's been home he really has been adrift- not knowing what he wanted out of life, just that whatever it was wasn't in Kill Devil Hills. He's just biding his time until his parole is over and he can move on. But Adrift isn't just Ben's story, it's also Juniper's. And when Juniper enters Ben's life she's like a balm to his soul. Not to say it's all smooth sailing, because it's not. But even when they hit some rough waters, there's a connection between Ben and Juniper that they can't deny or hide from.
I adore Ben. He was a bit like a lost puppy, just wandering about with no direction until Juniper arrives. And then he realizes that maybe he does have a purpose in life, that maybe everything in his life did happen for a reason, and it was all to lead him to Juniper and her unborn baby. But because of what happened in his past he's a little conflicted as well, not sure if his feelings for her are true or misplaced guilt.
Neither Ben nor Juniper were at a point in their lives where they were looking for love, but sometimes that's the way life works out. They were two people who needed each other but didn't know it until their paths crossed at just the right time .
As I said, I'm really sad to see this series come to an end. Sarah has written such real and engaging characters, and I was so glad we got to catch up with the rest of the family in Adrift. I'm holding out hope that maybe there's a novella for Georgie and Noah, sometime in the future!
**My thanks to the author for providing me with a free copy for an honest review**
We start to get to know Ben a little bit before in books two and three in the series, but this can be read as a stand alone book.
The book takes place well after Ben's return from the dead. He has completed his sentence in Prison and is now on probation.
Juniper feels that her past life choices have made her weak and that her judgement of men is off, but a simple white lie has her pretending to be someone she is not in order to make a new life for herself.
Ben and Juniper have chemistry from the beginning, but with their pasts are slow to start things up with each other, however they find that it is only with each other can they relax and be more of themselves.
We get to see all of the other previous characters in tis book which help out when required showing a strong family bond.
I really liked this book and would be more than happy to read this series all over again.
This was my first book by Sarah. I really enjoyed it. Wow Ben, swoon! Everything happens fairly fast in the story but it was easy to keep up and not confusing.
I will now for sure have to read the previous books in the series!
I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, pain, secrets, and heartbreak.
Before reading this story please read the below books first Kill Devil Hills (Kill Devil Hills, #1) Changing Tides (Kill Devil Hills, #2) Pulled Under (Kill Devil Hills, #3)
This is Juniper and Ben’s story. Everyone thought Ben was dead and now he is back. But things have changed. He is not so loved in his town. He just got out of prison and is trying to adapt. Juniper is on the run. Thinking no one would find her in this town she runs into Ben. She is hiding out and he is struggling. Can they help each other? What happens when secrets are revealed? Will they ever be the same? Would he even want someone who is pregnant and alone?
I loved these characters and the side characters. I felt I could connect with the characters and the story was a great read.
I think this book is a 4.5 it's just missing that little bit more of drama I think everything wrapped up too quickly for me. I loved reading it tho and enjoyed seeing Ben and June. they are an unexpected couple. but they deff became friends and lovers in such a good way that it felt real. I never want to say goodbye to kill devil hills... I can't even think of a book 5 to write but i want one!!
Adrift (Kill Devil Hills, # 4) by Sarah Darlington For those who have read the 3 previous book we finally get Ben’s story. He was popular, smart and the high school quarterback but had decided to graduate early to join the Coast Guards. While serving he fell overboard and was declared dead. In fact he was not dead but living in Malibu with an elderly lady. His story picks up with him living back at home with his family after being released from prison after serving a sentence for desertion. He is not adjusting well to being back home. When he sees a light on in the house next door he comes across a red hair beauty he assumes is his childhood friend Lilly who he has not seen since they were ten Lilly is not who she says she is. Her real name is Juniper and she is running from a very abusive fiancée. Since discovering she is pregnant, for the safety of her unborn children she leaves her life behind in Virginia and flees to a place she remembered as happier times when she was younger. Their two worlds collide. Can they save each other from the lives they left behind? I have been waiting for this book for a long time and was over the moon when I heard that the author was finally releasing this book. I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader Copy of this book and it was well worth the wait. If you haven’t read the previous book by all means please do so. I enjoyed each book and this one as well. Once I got into the story I had a hard time putting the book down. I give this story 4.5 stars
For those who have read the previous books in this series, you will remember the rocky start the characters all had when Ben Turner was lost at sea and declared dead. We had Georgie trying to kill herself and then his girlfriend at the time got with his best friend. Now a few years later Ben has returned from the dead and his prison stint. He is now back living in Kill Devil Hills and having to face his past and the consequences of his actions. Juniper Hug has been in a relationship with an abusive guy and to make it worst he is in the law business and has connections everywhere. When Juniper was younger, she remembered visiting KDH and decided to change her identity and head there, so he can't find her especially now that she is also pregnant. Ben meets Juniper but thinks she is Lily Davenport - a family friend from his childhood. Over the book, Juniper, to survive, continues to be Lily, but things start to get complicated when Ben begins to fall in love and vice versa. What will happen though when Juniper finally tells Ben the truth? Then just as things look like they might be looking up - Juniper's ex-arrives in Kill Devil Hills for what he believes is his property? Unlike the previous books in the series, Adrift has more of edgier and romantic suspense feel to the book.
This is book 4 in the Kill Devil Hills series. I'm so happy to finally get Ben's story!! It's been a long time coming.
I really liked Juniper. I was curious who would be Ben's love interest. I'm glad it was a new character. Juniper is not from OBX, so she has no idea about Ben's history and his fake death. This allowed Ben to relax and be himself. I loved watching them start out as friends and become more. Ben was a little frustrating at times as he pushed her away when she needed him most.
I was hoping there would be more interaction between Ben and his sister Georgie. If you read book one (Georgie's book) you know what Georgie does after finding out her brother died. I really wish they would have had some sort of discussion about it. We know Ben's not comfortable being around his sister because he feels terrible. But unfortunately, the topic was never brought up.
This book can definitely be read as a standalone, but it's a great series. You'll fall in love with these characters and want to read more!
Finally Ben's story is out! I've been waiting for this book for so long, the author plotted this series around him, giving us the other characters stories before this one, so she have been building the anticipation for this one quite good!
I LOVED this series. Every book brought a smile to my face.
Adrift it's Ben and Juniper story. Both of them with a past they want to forget, difficult and scarring. They become friends, true friends with that little lust in between, until one day they couldn't take their hands off each other anymore.
I also think that this could have been a huge angsty read if his reasons for fake his death were more realistic. They aren't. Also, after everything Georgie went through, I thought they had more interaction with each other... that's where I think this could have been more deepened.
I have enjoyed the entire Kill Devil Hills series so much! And Ben finally has his own story. He has been an overarching person throughout the entire series, one who has had a serious affect on everything while being absent. The way his memory has woven through the past three books is brilliant! So naturally, when I got my hands on his story, I was ready for something phenomenal. For me, I feel like this one fell short. There were parts I loved about this book but overall I wanted more from Ben. I wanted more of his second chance at everything to be a bit more profound and real. At times he still felt like a whiny kid. I was glad to finally understand what happened to him and a bit more about his thought process, but I could not connect with it at all. I felt like I never got a true reconciling of who he is and what he did. He feels guilt but there was no conversation and true change in him in regards to what he did and how he hurt everyone. I will admit I had a very high standard for this one going in so I was expecting MUCH more.
His attraction to Juniper and their love story was sweet. I liked their connection and how they fall for each other. It was a bit superficial but the way it is introduced into the story is well done and smooth. Quinton, Juniper's crazy ex, is a lingering ghost over these two for quite a while. When everything comes to fruition, it felt rushed. I wanted to see more happen. Juniper was one of my favorite parts of the story. She is breakable but strong. I liked her affect on Ben and the way she starts over. My other favorite parts are seeing glimpses of all my favorites from the series, living their lives, happily and completely.
While this one did not hit home for me like I was hoping, do not miss the series! The way Sarah Darlington weaves in and out of these people's lives is great and it creates a sense of comraderie. I was still anti-Ben for most of this story because I connected so deeply with the other stories and characters. The world Darlington creates is real and flawed, one that will keep you hooked!
Ben Turner is ALIVE! I still can't believe that it's already been over a year since I first discovered the incredibly phenomenal Kill Devil Hills series and fell in love with every single one of these one of a kind characters. Although Noah will forever hold the number one spot in my heart until the end of time, Ben is definitely a close second.
I had no idea what to expect going into Ben's story since we haven't really seen much of him even though his "death" played a major role in the entire series. This story was filled with so many twists and turns that I never knew what was going to happen. I was so happy to finally see what made Ben tick and find out the whole story behind why he decided to fake his death. While this story does center around his decision, every hero needs their heroine! Juniper is such a lovable character and I instantly connected with her. In my opinion, I felt that they both brought out the best in one another and helped them to blossom.
This ending to the series was a bittersweet moment because I never wanted to leave these characters behind, but as they say all good things must come to an end!
I had been waiting for this book because if you had followed the series and are like me, you needed to know what was going to come of Ben and what were his reasons behind his untimely demise. But no story is complete without drama from home and a red-head with a whole host of her own problems. Juniper is running, trying to find a better life than the one that she has. She finds herself in a place like no other, Kill Devil Hills, in a house she happened upon and a neighbor who just might be the answer she is looking for.
This was a sweet story, with a good dose of drama, a slow building relationship and a little suspense. It was a nice addition to the series and it was good to see the other characters. I did think there were some things that felt unresolved and I felt that there were some excuses that weren't really what I expected but overall I did enjoy Ben's story. He had a lot of explaining to do and I don't know if I was happy enough with his explanations but I did enjoy seeing him open up to this stranger. I liked that Juniper was completely removed from what got Ben to this point in his life and I found her story intriguing.
This was a fast-paced, enjoyable, addition to the series. I look forward to what else the author has in-store for us in the future.
It's been quite a while since I've read a Sarah Darlington book but within the first few pages back, I instantly remembered why I adore her writing and finally.... Ben's story is here with all kinds of feels and swoony moments.
Sexy. Fun. Angsty. Intense. Ben and Juniper delivered a near perfect story full of second chances and a real chance at a beautiful forever.
Adrift was an amazing story and probably the best in this series to date. Ben... sigh I love rooting for his kind of guy and Juniper was the right piece to make him complete. Together, these two had sparks flying and were totally magnetic.
While Adrift is the fourth standalone novel in her tempting Kill Devil Hills series, I definitely recommend reading this series in order for maximum impact.
Stars: 5 Length: 232 pgs Tense of Story: Present - First Person Genera: New Adult Contemporary Romance POV: Ben & Juniper MF : Juniper MM : Ben Location: North Carolina
This was my first book in the series to read. So the story can be read as a stand alone. I enjoyed it so much I am planning on reading the rest of the ones in the series.
The story was fast paced, with several twist. There were several areas where I really didn't know which way the story was going to go.
Loved Ben, sweet, kind, and lovable guy. He was lost and found something in life worth living for. I liked Juniper because she's a strong female character. No BS with her, no crying her eyes out because of her situation, which really sucks.
The location sounded so nice, I'm planning to someday go visit Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina.
I love this whole series! All of the twist and turns, the drama, the unexpected getting together. It's just a great series to read.
This book is about Ben. Ben was introduced in Georgina's book (1st book). He is the brother of Georgina, Ellie, and Rose and he is in a little bit of trouble in this series (if that is what you want to call it). He meets Juniper. Juniper is also in trouble and she is on Ben doesn't seem to mind that much.
Ben is the kind of guy that girls would love to have. Thoughtful, loving, willing to take care of a pregnant woman even when the children aren't his, and strong! With him willing to help her what happens when Ben finds out that Juniper isn't who he thinks she is? Will he stick around to keep helping her or will he tell her goodbye?
I was so excited when I saw this book would be about Ben. In previous books I hated Ben for what he did. I thought he was selfish and a jerk but in this one I loved him. In this one we find out what Ben was goign through and why he did what he did. Ben is back home and trying to put everything back together again.
Juniper is pregnant and that's all she needed to run from the abusive relationship she was in. She ends up breaking into the empty house next door to Ben's family. I really liked Juniper. Ben mistakes her for his old neighbor, Lilly. They hit it off. Both Juniper and Ben have past that aren't great. I really was rooting for them but in the back of mind I was worried about when Ben found out the truth about Juniper. Together they meshed well.
Ever read a book you never want to end?? This was that book for me. I tried so hard to read it so slow so it wouldn't end but at the same time I wanted read so fast to know what was going to happen. Absolutely loved the characters and they are written so well that you can truly feel every emotion in your soul right along with them. I completely love Sarah Darlington's books and this one is at the top of my ultimate favorite.
Despite the title, this story will keep you grounded all throughout, like an anchor. Family, friends and love will do that to you, and this story revolves around them. This story will definitely suck you in, and when you let up fo air, you'll get all the happy feeling inside.
Reading Ben's story is such a heart-warming feeling, one that I can't seem to get enough of.
Can two tortured souls find a fresh start in life and love together??
Needing to get away from life in the small town he grew up in, Ben decided to forgo college and graduate high school early to join the Coast Guard. A freak accident left him with the opportunity to fake his own death and start over on the other side of the country. For two years, Ben lived the life he wanted while all of his family and friends grieved his "death". After contacting a sibling, Ben is outed and serves prison time for abandoning the military. Now he is freshly out of prison and living with his parents back in that same small town.
Juniper flees DC for the small beach town in NC after discovering that she is pregnant by her mentally, emotionally, physically and sexually abusive fiance. Since its winter, most of the homeowners are living inland and Juniper takes advantage of that breaks into one of the houses to get some sleep. When Ben mistakens Juniper for the homeowner's daughter, she seizes the opportunity to stay in the house a little longer to decide what she is going to do and how she is going to live and survive.
Can a relationship built on lies and mistruths survive and grow into something lasting?
This is the final book in the Kill Devil Hills series. It was such a great book. I absolutely loved reading Ben and Junipers story. Such an incredibly sad and moving story from him. Though this book has plenty of hot loving and happiness. Who would have thought that coming back from the dead was the best thing to happen to him. And getting to see what's happened to the other family members in the previous books. Each characters relationship gets brought into this book as well. I loved how it kept us updated on everything. The only character I wish we could have got an update on was the old gal that Ben lived with before he returned to Kill Devil Hills. Who could even imagine living through the madness in Bens life. 5/5 A T&A Book Blog
This book is Ben and Junipers story. If you have a trigger for DV this might not be the book for you. Juniper leaves her abusive boyfriend and she is pregnant. She finds her way next door to Ben. She is older then him but they have a connection. Ben falls for her but he has to get past his ghost and problems from the past. Is their love strong enough to heal both of them? They have many ups and downs and they both do not give up.
Sarah Darlington is a stron writer and I really liked this book. I look forward to reading more from her.
This is the last book in a series and the only book I have read from that series. I loved it. Ben and Juniper come together by unconventional means and a bond forms. Juniper is pregnant and Ben is willing to raise another man's baby. They are so good together. I really enjoyed this book and hope that I can go back and read the others in this series.
Sarah Darlington delivers in this book. Ben returns home, after taking his death, reputation in tatters, Juniper assumes someone else's identity to escape the reality of a sadistic relationship with her lover Quinton. Hea after obstacles overcome. Recommended.
