The Mistletoe Seller

Rate this book
It’s Christmas Eve. Flurries of snow fall on the cobbled streets of Whitechapel and an abandoned baby, swaddled in a blanket, is found on a doorstep in Angel Lane . . .

Named after the street on which she was found, Angel Winter was blessed to be taken from the harsh streets into a loving home. But fate deals a cruel blow and she’s torn from the only family she has ever known, and thrown onto the cobbles of Covent Garden to fend for herself.

With winter closing in, Angel scratches a living selling mistletoe to the City gentlemen who pass through the market, hoping they will take pity on her as she shivers in the snow. The only way she can survive is to make her own luck. She will never sell the one treasure that could feed her for a month, the gold and ruby ring that was hidden in her swaddling – it could hold the key to the secrets of her past . . .

A baby is abandoned in Whitechapel on Christmas Eve. She was given the name Angel Winter by the people who took her in. But when fate deals a cruel blow, Angel finds herself back living on the streets to fend for herself. Angel sells mistletoe to gentlemen who pass through the market. Angel will never sell the one treasure she has, a gold and Ruby ring, that was hidden in the her swaddling - could the ring hols the secrets of her past?

I love Dilly Court and I have read all of her books. This book is set in the late 1800's. I felt myself getting taken back in time while I was reading this book. Bad luck seems to follow Angel but when something knocks her down she just gets more determined to make a better life for the people that she loves. There is a fantastic character list and there's a few you will dislike. A lovely cosy read for these long winter nights.

I find Dilly Court hard to classify, she doesn't write traditional historical romances or family sagas, but there are a lot of the same themes in her books. This book follows the life of a foundling called Angel as she makes her way in the late Victorian world. It's atmospheric and has strong characters and a good way to spend an afternoon.

The Mistletoe Seller is Dilly Court’s Christmas novel, the latest in her long series of historical fiction novels.

The background context is a baby found on the pre-Ripper Christmas Eve streets of Whitechapel, in the falling snow. Taken in by a kind-hearted woman, her life takes a bad twist, and she finds herself thrown onto the cobblestone streets of Covent Garden, to fend for herself.

Angel Winter is the protagonist, and narrator throughout the novel, and her predicament as Winter closes in is dire. She got her name from the street where she was found, but now she sells mistletoe to passing City Gentlemen, a starting scenario reminiscent of Hans Christian Anderson’s Little Match Girl, struggling to make enough.

However, Angel does not see her granny in visions, although she does have a gold & ruby ring that could hold the key to her future (she would never sell this of course!).

Angel of course is beautiful, doesn’t seem to have any bitterness in her for how her life began or developed, and most people seem to want to help her for her own sake.

The Mistletoe Seller is a heart-warming story, with likeable characters filled with stoicism and self-reliance, but also being able to ask for help. It falls completely in line with the season and the sentimentality of Victorian-era romance novels. It is very festive, very fast-paced, and contains nice twists and turns to keep the attention.

I am not a fan of this genre, and the novel doesn’t disappoint. It is well-researched, though, and convincingly evokes the atmosphere of the time. Dilly Court’s legion of fans will love this, the story of Angel gradually discovering who she is and the details of her past, and would make a lovely Christmas present to those who love period drama-type novels.

This was another beautiful book by Dilly Court. The Mistletoe Seller was a Christmas present from my son, so I decided to put others to the side and start this straight away. The story did not disappoint, it had me hooked from the first page. It's the story of Angel Winter who was found abandoned as a baby on Christmas eve. She is adopted an d has a good upbringing until her adoptive father dies suddenly. Then her life takes a turn for the worst and she ends up on the streets of London selling flowers to make enough to eat and have a bed for the night. This book has lots of twists and turns, which I loved. My only issue is that the last part of the story was a bit confusing and it was hard to keep track of the relationships. Overall a great read.

Visit the Dilly Court locations in the novel

I do love a Dilly Court novel as it’s like stepping back in time. I think I’ve not only learned but experienced periods of social history I might never have otherwise.

Her characters also shine – Angel here is the narrator throughout and a lovely girl we get to know gradually as she meets various people who will help shape her life in some way. She’s a strong character and has some obstacles to get past. I felt really sorry for her at times, but happy when she met friends and that Lumpy Lil! Ha there’s just some characters in a novel you really want to meet!

There are some twists too to enjoy and I gasped out at one of them in particular! No wonder the girl on the cover looks so miserable I thought – I can see why now.

There is lots to this novel, but in the end it’s a really nice Christmas story set in a real period of history and amidst the struggles of those who sold trinkets at Convent Garden. There are some wonderful characters and relationships in this novel. Dolly and Angel’s friendship in particular.

A great Christmas novel and one to read anytime really as apart from the mistletoe and snow, you can read it anytime – it’s more of a novel about the trials and tribulations of a girl who fights to take her rightful place in the world and I was championing her all the way through. Would that girl on the cover raise a smile I wondered? Not really as that would be a bit Dorian Gray, but I was routing for her!

A lot of issues. Not enough chemistry with Danny who she ends up with, they've met once before when she was 12 and he pretty indifferent to her. Yet he claims to have been in love with her since then. Hector abandons his family who is in serious turmoil after their uncle dies and the house is being foreclosed on to "go back to his regiment" saying it's an emergency from the state department, when in reality he's gone to marry some girl in Malta. I nearly gave up reading about 60% through when I lost track of who was related to who, and who owned Grantley, and who was in the London house and who was in the Hackney house. And Percy, he was attracted to Angel and when he discovers she's his half sister he concludes that's why he was drawn to her. Because siblings are attractive to each other. I'm not sure quite what that means. Bit of a ramble, which I'd normally put in notes, but this is too long.

And there's no way people could travel from SOUTH AFRICA that quickly in the 1880s.

This was a lovely festive read. Loved Angel Winter and felt quite sorry for her being abandoned as a baby. I always love Dilly Court's books and they never disappoint. I wish they would be made into TV serials.

Loved this book by Dilly Court as I have all her other books I have read. Angels story of how she was found as a baby on Christmas Eve and how she gradually discovers her past and who she really is, is a very captivating story and one I enjoyed immensely.

Dei 3 estrelas no goodreads.
