Enid Mary Blyton (1897–1968) was an English author of children's books.

Born in South London, Blyton was the eldest of three children, and showed an early interest in music and reading. She was educated at St. Christopher's School, Beckenham, and - having decided not to pursue her music - at Ipswich High School, where she trained as a kindergarten teacher. She taught for five years before her 1924 marriage to editor Hugh Pollock, with whom she had two daughters. This marriage ended in divorce, and Blyton remarried in 1943, to surgeon Kenneth Fraser Darrell Waters. She died in 1968, one year after her second husband.

Blyton was a prolific author of children's books, who penned an estimated 800 books over about 40 years. Her stories were often either children's adventure and mystery stories, or fantasies involving magic. Notable series include: The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, The Five Find-Outers, Noddy, The Wishing Chair, Mallory Towers, and St. Clare's.

According to the Index Translationum, Blyton was the fifth most popular author in the world in 2007, coming after Lenin but ahead of Shakespeare.

The only reason I read this was because it was free and I'm trying to have a clear out (have far too many books). I absolutely love Blyton's Magic Far Away Tree, but had never got into the Secret Seven. Really this story and its characters and language used are out dated and could be seen as almost wrong in modern society. Basically the plot involves the Secret Seven seeing the silhouette of the man with his hands up through a factory window, while on their way home in the dark. They go get a rope (take on of their mother's washing lines without asking) to try and investigate themselves, before calling the Police because they can't get in. It turns out to be a group of actors practicing for a play. I was a little alarmed that a group of children thought breaking in to a property, especially when they believed a robbery was taking place, was so 'jolly', and the Police didn't reprimand them for trying to get in the property or sneakily following them in. Yes, it's just a story, but would a 5 year old see it that way? Best left in the archives I feel.

Always loved Enid Blyton as a child and this book came with a happy meal from McDonalds but it was a lovely short and sweet story that gave me a quick nostalgia trip and I would recommend for any child.

I first read it as a 27 y.o. and finished it in one sitting, honestly, I didn’t really find it interesting, but I can imagine my 7-year-old self loving this series. I was just 20 years too late to read it, thanks to generational poverty and an underdeveloped country, that I was only able to have access to this book in the big 2026.

Decent, but harder to understand (in my target language) than more recent books, quite tough. Overall the plot twist was unexpected but it makes sense for the length of the book

This was not as good as the other ones because the adventure was not as good as the other ones - it was just a rehearsal for a play!
