Headstrong Abby Harper is like a mother to her younger brothers, who she’s helped raise since she was a teenager. Keeping them in line is no small task while she’s also working toward her college degree. And now that one of her brothers has been arrested for stealing cattle at the East Ranch, Abby is at her wits’ end. But there is a silver lining: Clayton East. He believes in second chances, and is willing to give one to her brother this Christmas. Letting beautiful Abby―and the inescapable longing in his heart―off the hook, however, is a whole ’nother story. Could it be that the woman of this local hero’s dreams has been back at home all along?

The Christmas Cowboy Hero is book one in the brand new series Heart of Texas by Donna Grant. This book gets all the stars. Five most definitely isn’t enough. It’s only October but I think I have already found my favorite Christmas book for the year. I’ve only read one book by Donna in the past, one of her paranormal romances in the Dark Kings series. So I jumped at the chance to start with this brand new series on my favorite topic, cowboys. And who could resist that cover. Not me!

Clayton East is an ex Navy Seal and now is working in Africa protecting game from poachers. He hasn’t returned to his home, The East Ranch, in Clearview, Texas for a reason. It just brings back too much pain. It’s three weeks before Christmas when he got the call. His dad was sick, and the ranch was in trouble. They needed him. It was time for Clayton to go home.

A LOT LIKE HEAVEN

Abby Harper was eighteen years old when her mother left handing over guardianship for her two little brothers. Now, eight years later, her brothers, Caleb and Brice, are fourteen and sixteen years old. Abby is going to school part time to get her accounting degree and is working at an accounting firm but only being paid an hourly wage. She is doing the best she can, barely scraping by, but trying her best to provide for her brothers. Brice was a good boy but had been running with some not so great friends. But he’d never been in real trouble. Then Abby got the call, Brice had been arrested for rustling cattle.

Cattle Drive

When Clayton got home, everything was a mess. Their current accountant had fled town with most of the ranch’s money, and someone had stolen one hundred head of their cattle. They caught one of the rustlers, a sixteen year old kid. When Clay went to the police station to talk to him, he met his sister, Abby. Brice wouldn’t talk and it was apparent that he was scared of something. Clay believed in second chances and he hoped that if he gave Brice the opportunity to work off his debt on his ranch, that he would gain his trust and get him to talk to him. It would also give Clay a chance to see his sister again. When he first saw her at the police station, it was like a punch to the stomach. He’d never reacted that way to anyone before.

“He knew lust well, and this wasn’t it. Need, yes. Desire, definitely. But the hunger within him was raw, visceral. Primal. How could he experience such a thing with someone he just met?”

ranch at christmas

Let me just stop here and talk about these two families. The East family was everything. They accepted Brice into their family with no bad feelings what so ever. Just wait until you meet Clayton’s mom. She was like everything good in every mother all rolled into one. And Clayton! That man! He was perfection. He made me sigh so much I thought I might hyperventilate. And lots of swooning. Oh yes, lots! He was everything you dream a cowboy should be. Plus, add in all the Navy Seal stuff and oh my gosh. Need I say more?!

Then there are the Harpers. Abby and her brothers only knew hardship. There was so much love between those three. Abby worked so hard to try to provide for her brothers, to be sister, mother and father all rolled into one. And they all had some serious abandonment issues. But they had so much love.

When the East’s took the Harpers into their folds, the boys flourished. With a role model like Clay, they saw what a man should be, could be. The changes were immediate. And Clay showed Abby something as well. He showed her that she didn’t have to be alone, that she didn’t have to do everything. That she could share her burden with someone else. But could she really trust that he too wouldn’t just wake up one morning and be tired of them and leave? Could she risk her heart and the boys’ hearts?

“Never had Abby felt so…included. For the first time, she wasn’t just watching families interact, she was a part of it. It was an amazing feeling. And a reminder of everything her brothers didn’t have.”

This book was just fantastic. I couldn’t stop reading. There were so many sweet moments, some sexy times, some suspenseful times, and lots of Christmas love. Clayton is my new book boyfriend. But I don’t mind sharing him. So I hope you’ll read this book and love him and Abby and their families as much as I have. I don’t know what’s next in this series but I can’t wait to find out. Thank you so much, Donna Grant, for sweeping me away to Clearview, Texas and The East Ranch in this amazing book.

The Christmas Cowboy Hero by Donna Grant is a 2017 St. Martin’s Press publication.

This one’s a winner!!

Ex-Navy SEAL AND a Cowboy? Yes, please.

Clayton has returned home at his mother’s bidding, due to his father’s sudden illness and the family ranch teetering on bankruptcy, due to a major embezzlement scheme and cattle theft ring.

When Abby Harper’s younger brother is caught stealing cattle, as his guardian, she must sort things out. When Clayton realizes Abby is raising her brothers and is a little overwhelmed, his heart melts a little, and he decides to cut her some slack, by generously allowing her brother to work off his debt at his ranch.

As Abby begins to spend a little time at the ranch, she learns of Clayton’s financial issues and winds up helping him uncover the embezzlement issues, but she also finds herself falling for the tortured cowboy, and Clayton begins to have feelings for the beautiful lady who had to grow up too quickly when she had to step up and become a parent to her brothers at the ripe old age of eighteen.

I loved this story for many reasons. Everyone deserves a second chance, and although Clayton may have been moved more by Abby than her brother’s regret and remorse for the crimes he committed, by having him work off his debt, it helped Brice build character, and he responded to having a stable male presence in his life.

I also love the tortured hero complex and Clayton has all those traits. His time in the military left him hallowed out and the loss of his brother gutted him. You won’t be able to resist this big hearted Texan!

Abby is being taken advantage of by her boss, has her hands full trying to make ends meet, and raise her brothers. I admired her loyalty and responsibility to her brothers, and I’m glad she found a better life for herself and her brothers.

This may be my favorite contemporary holiday romance, so far, this year! It’s sensual and sexy, but also has a little suspense and mystery, with lots of drama and a heartwarming holiday atmosphere to top it all off. That I’m a little partial towards SEALS and cowboys is also a big added bonus! This is the first book in a new series, and that means more Texans and more cowboys. I can sense my romance novel diet could be coming to an end. So, Merry Christmas to me!!

This one gets all the stars!

After leaving the Navy Seals Clayton East was not ready to return home to the East Ranch owned by his family so he'd taken a job elsewhere and tried to avoid heading home. The ranch had been hard for Clayton to visit since the death of his brother but when he gets a call that his father is ill and the ranch is in trouble he packs up to head home just in time for the Christmas holiday. When Clayton arrives he finds that there have been a lot of the cattle stolen and the family is in trouble financially and that may have led to his father being hospitalized.

While working to get the ranch back on track Clayton finds out that a teenager has been arrested for stealing some of the East Ranch cattle but he is unwilling to talk and tell who he is working for. Abby Harper gets the call about the arrest because the young boy in question is her little brother who she has been raising since their mother left. When Clayton sees how Abby has been struggling and doing the best she can to raise her two younger brothers Clayton gets the idea to offer the boy a chance to work off his debt at the ranch and hopefully get him to admit who was really behind the theft but also giving him more time to see Abby.

The Christmas Cowboy Hero by Donna Grant is the first book in the contemporary romance Heart of Texas series. While this one is considered romance it really was right at the edge of being romantic suspense with a nice little addition of the missing cattle being involved in the story. There's some action and adventure added to the book that gave it more depth than just a story of two people meeting and falling in love.

The book also has the nice added element of focusing on family with Abby raising her two brothers and Clayton reconnecting with his own family. I"m often a fan when a single parent finds someone to fit into their life with their children and this one fit that mold as the boys became involved on the ranch. My only real complaint at the end would be it could have used a touch more Christmassy magic but overall I enjoyed this one especially since there wasn't the added over the top angst included in a lot of romance and would rate it at 4.5 stars.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

I loved this book! I am not usually someone who reads a lot of Christmas stories. I will read them but I don't really look for them. This book made its way into my hands and something about that cover drew me right in and I wanted to start reading it right away. Once I started, I didn't want to stop and I ended up reading the whole thing from cover to cover in a single day. I really enjoyed every moment I spent reading this wonderful little story.

Clayton is ex-military and has been working overseas until he is called home to the family ranch. The ranch is in trouble and his dad is sick so Clayton must come home to run things and try to save the ranch. Abby has not had it easy. She has been raising her two younger brothers and doing her best to get ahead in life.

Abby and Clayton meet when Abby's brother is caught stealing cattle from the ranch Clayton's family owns. Not the best way to start things. Clayton turns out to be a really nice guy and instead of sending Abby's brother, Brice, to jail he lets him come and work his debt off at the ranch. Clayton also enlists Abby's help with the ranch's books hoping that she can sort out exactly what is going on.

I loved the characters in this book. Abby and Clayton were both amazing. Abby was strong and cared deeply for her two brothers. She was smart and willing to sacrifice her wants for the sake of other people. Clayton was such a good guy. He has had some things to deal with in his personal and military life. I loved this pair together. They had great chemistry from the very beginning and it was really wonderful to watch them fall in love.

The secondary characters were also really well done. Abby's two brothers, Brice and Caleb, played a large role in the story and were really great. Their relationship with their sister really helped illustrate how much she cared for them. Clayton's parents were also key players in the story. I liked how they welcomed Abby and her brothers as if they were family right from the start.

The mystery in the book kept things interesting. I really wanted to see Clayton save the ranch with Abby's help. There were a few scenes where we got to see Clayton, a former SEAL, in action which was pretty exciting. This was really a book more focused on romance than anything else and it did a wonderful job with it. I don't know that there was really anything too surprising in the book but everything was executed perfectly. I couldn't help but get swept away by this romantic tale.

I would highly recommend to fans of contemporary romance. This book had just the right combination of romance, action, and great characters. The story had just the right amount of Christmas adding just a bit to the story. This is the first book by Donna Grant that I have read and I am really looking forward to reading more of her work soon.

I received a review copy of this book from St. Martin's Press.

Initial Thoughts
I loved this book! Clayton and Abby were absolutely perfect together. I thought the secondary characters were amazing and the mystery held my interest. This probably falls somewhere between 4 and 5 stars for me so I am rounding up for now.

4.5 - "Christmas has come early..." Stars!

Donna Grant writing a Christmas Romantic Suspense, with an ex-SEAL cowboy…

SIGN. ME. UP!

Clayton East was truly a Prince Charming with a Stetson, and I loved the Cinderella aspect with the way Donna built Abby and her brother’s story around them and the East family accepting them into the fold, in general.

"It seems like our families are intertwined…"

The suspense comes in the form of some good ole’ cattle rustling, and the romance between this pair fell a little into the ‘insta’ category, but I loved it anyway. So much so I gave myself a headache by finishing the book in pretty much one sitting.

"You’ve been doing things for everyone but yourself. When are you going to let someone do something for you..?"

Really, really enjoyable read. The authors forays away from the PNR genre into Contemporary Romantic Suspense in the past year or two have really gotten better and better with each new release. The Heart of Texas series looks like its going to be another stellar addition to her bibliography.

"Wouldn’t you rather see where it takes you than to always wonder..?"

Those Cowboys sure know how to ride…

When I was a little girl, I wanted a horse…until I rode one…and fell off. That’s a bloody long way down. And, if you’re not used to it, that is some serious butt sore you have to suffer through. So, my dream of becoming a Cowgirl never came to pass. To be honest, I’m not great with animals, so it was probably for the best.

There’s a little part of me, that always dreamed that I’d be a Cowgirl to my very own Cowboy. Hubby may not be a cowboy, but he did grow up on acreage. He used to ride his pony from house to house (in the neighbourhood) so they could all take advantage of the horse’s grass eating skills. You may scoff but this is about as close as I’ll get to marrying a Cowboy.

I guess I’ll have to stick to Cowboys in my reads….

Anyways…I really enjoyed The Christmas Cowboy Hero. It was sweet and a little cheesy, but in this case, I loved it. Most likely, the fact that it was offset by a sexy, tough and virile Ex-Navy SEAL, helped. So, he’s got the bada$$ down pat, add the jeans, boots and cowboy hat AND knows how to RIDE…HUBBA HUBBA!

Yes, the Cowboy had all the right moves and says all the right things. I think I like him. Now, add in that he’s fighting demons from his past, well, who doesn’t love a wounded hero?

As you may have guessed, it’s all about the hero for me in this one. Sure, I actually liked the heroine. She’s strong, resilient and loving as she brings up her two younger brothers. But, for me, her job was just to give the hero something else to make him shine.

There is an actual storyline besides the love story and it kept me enthralled from start to finish. Money laundering, cattle theft and protecting loved ones were the main focus of the story. Christmas is in the title, but only in a small way. Plenty of sweet and sexy times to show the connection between the hero and heroine. Another part that made this a great read for me, the angst is outside the couple and they fight together. Sure, they had their doubts, but it wasn’t drawn out and no one went running for the hills for 6 months (thank goodness).

If you’re looking for a light read with a great love story, a little suspense and a sexy Cowboy, I definitely recommend you try The Christmas Cowboy Hero.

The family ranch is the last place Clayton wants to be at. Still haunted by his brothers death and all the things he’s seen and done as an ex-seal has kept him from coming home. The choice is taken away when he finds out that his father suffered an illness after having cattle stolen.

The police was only able to catch a young teenager from the group of men taking the cattle. That young teenager is at the heart of things just a good kid with a tough home life. Clayton recognizes the good in Brice and decides to have him work off the stolen cattle on the family ranch when he finds out that his older sister is the legal guardian to him and his little brother.

Abby is barely scraping by trying to take care of her brothers after their mom left them when she turned 18. Years later and she’s still working at getting her degree while also trying to keep food on the table. Life is hard and when Clayton swoops in to help, she can’t help but think it’s too good to be true.

The attraction is instant for Clayton after just one look at Abby. Because of her, he is no longer counting down the days before he can leave again. He now feels like he’s finally come home.

This had that Hallmark Christmas feel to it. It’s a family friendly, low angst, feel good kind of story that is full of sugary sweetness.

5 ~ Feel good/Christmas-y/Cowboy ~ Stars!

Struggling to make ends meet is the least of Abby Harper’s concern right now. Not when her young brother has been arrested for stealing cattle. And not just any cattle either, but East Ranch cattle!

After her mother up and left them when she was just eighteen, Abby has worked herself raw to clothe, feed and properly raise her two younger brothers. Seeing her brother behind bars nearly breaks her and drives home the feelings of failure she has been harboring since waking up that fateful morning and finding herself thrust into the role of both sister and mother to two young boys.

Clayton East is home to help his parents unravel their own financial issues. Having the family CPA run off with all their money is bad enough, but when he received word that almost a hundred head of cattle have been stolen right under his trusting parents’ noses and it feels like the last straw.

But one look at Abby and a heartfelt interview with a misguided young man and Clay finds himself offering his own deal. Have Brice work off his debt at the East Ranch in the hopes of earning his trust and finding out where the cattle are being held in exchange for dropping the charges. His deal is two-fold. One being that he hopes to make a positive change in Brice and two, he’ll have an excuse to get to know Abby more. The electric charge he feels upon seeing her for the first time is too tempting to pass up.

With Christmas right around the corner and a new second chance for both Abby and Clay’s families, will a budding romance withstand some dangerous criminals bent on causing havoc?

What I loved:
Donna Grant writes amazing family orientated characters and the Harper/East families were above and beyond amazing. I loved reading about Abby and her brothers. Their love for each other was inspiring and frankly, a beautiful representation of family you don’t see all that often. The way they supported each other, gave so selflessly and loved unconditionally would have gotten five stars, alone, from me.

The East family was just as enjoyable to read and get to know. They were strong and united, in the good and the bad time,(even if Clay struggled on his own for a while) they cared deeply for each other and DG doesn’t just tell you this. You feel the emotion through the writing, letting you experience the family ties first hand.

Then there is the romance aspect of this story. I loved Abby and Clay! The progression of their romance from friends to lovers was so in sync with their characterizations. Their instant connection shot off sparks of electricity and heat that was undeniably yummy to read. When I started TCCH I was expecting a short novella type read but what I ended up getting was a nice meaty full blown novel that delivered everything it promised.

Christmas Romance ✔️
Sexy Cowboy ✔️
A great Hero ✔️
A strong and likable/lovable heroine ✔️
Great supporting Characters ✔️
Feel good vibes ✔️
HEA ✔️

Favorite Lines:
He didn’t know how, but he had to make her his, to ensure their hearts and souls were bound forever. No matter how long it took, no matter what he had to do, he would win her.

Living a full life isn’t about keeping yourself safe and tucked away so nothing and no one can hurt you. You’ll end up alone and lonely. Life is about putting yourself out there to see what’s coming. You might get knocked down, but then you pick your ass back up and lift your chin, waiting for whatever’s next.

Memorable Moments:
Clay certainly has a way with words because he all but melts me into a puddle of gooey sappiness a few delicious times but his declaration of love to Abby steals the number one spot.

“I’m going to love you forever, Abby Harper. I’m going to love you so fiercely and so hard that you’ll never doubt us for one instant.”

Would I recommend? If you want a totally safe cowboy Christmas romance then a big fat YES! I loved The Christmas Cowboy Hero and Donna Grant is becoming a go-to author for me now Lol!

This was just what I needed! A sweet Christmas story with a cowboy/ former Navy Seal? That's a double whammy right there.
Fantastic main characters, aswell as secondary characters. I was thrilled that it was a true romance. The drama was from outside sources, not anything to do with their relationship. No ow/om situations for the sake of drama.

- no cheating
- no ow/om drama
- no violence of a sexual nature
-a few steamy scenes (could have used a bit more)
- safe
-just ok epilogue.

A reluctant but hot rancher and a family that will do anything to keep themselves together make for one extremely heart-warming, feel-good, romance that will stay with you long after you through!

Clayton is a troubled retired Navy SEAL that has returned home for the holidays only to find his family’s ranch in financial trouble. Their accountant has been stealing money from the coffers and someone has rustled the cattle needed to pull them out of the dire straits they are in.

Abby Harper is doing everything she can to keep her family together. Left with the custody of her two younger brothers right after she turned 18, she’s struggling to keep their heads above water. When her brother makes a rash move to help out his sister, it brings Abby and her family’s plight in front of the East family and their ranch.

Immediate attraction between Clayton and Abby spark a meaningful and lasting tale that will bring a smile to your face. is the perfect feel-good holiday story we all crave.

Abby Harper's brother, Brice, got into trouble with The East Ranch for stealing their cattle. Ever since their mother left them behind, Abby took the responsibility as the guardian for her younger brothers. She's selfless, responsible, independent and nurturing. She temporarily sets aside her college degree to provide their needs. She knows Brice is a good kid and it isn't his intention committing a mistake and gladly, Clayton East gave him a second chance.

Clayton is an ex- Navy SEAL. He finds Abby beautiful inside and out. Their chemistry is natural and they have a lot in common. He and his family are hospitable and made the Harpers feel like home. Since it takes place during the Christmas season, the timing is perfect and I love it's family centered more than it's romance. It's wholesome and sweet.

I love stories like this even if it's not December. My heart melts.

The Christmas Cowboy Hero is the first in a new contemporary series by Donna Grant and it is full of family, healing and romance. Clayton East is called home to Texas when he finds his father is ill and the ranch has financial difficulties. A teenager was caught rustling his cattle and decides to give him a chance to work off his debt at the ranch. Abby Harper is relieved that her brother isn’t charged and hopes that this chance can do more for him than just stay out of trouble. No one would realize how this one incident would be life changing for a great deal of people.

Abby has been raising her brothers since she was 18 and barely makes ends meet. Abandoned by their mother shortly after their father’s death, it has been her and her teenage brothers struggling to survive. Now Brice is in trouble and fortunate that the East won’t make it worse. Going to the ranch gives her opportunities to not only see if her brother is ok, but to see Clayton and figure out why she’s attracted to him. Going to be at the ranch a lot also lets her and her brothers get a look at what a real couple acts when they see Clayton’s parents interact and want that for her one day. Some parents are loving and stay.

Clayton is ex-Navy Seal and saw too much war and tragedy to come home to the ranch. Even the ranch holds bad memories for him since the death of his older brother and feels differently about the place. Now he’s back and he’s determined to find the cattle that were stolen, and the accountant that embezzled the ranch money. The one person who knows something isn’t talking. He knows not to push Brice for the information and wants him to come to that decision on his own. What he wasn’t counting on was his attraction to his big sister. Clayton’s attraction to Abby helps him in so many ways to ease the pain the ranch brings and the perils of what he’s seen in war. What was growing between them was genuine and something special in order for both of them to confide in one another.

Clayton and Abby are two characters that put their family first and I find that very admirable. Abby has been both mother and sister for her brothers and wants them on the right track in life. Abby didn’t see the big picture of how well she has done with raising her brothers until it took another pair of eyes to show her that her love for them is coming through loud and clear and she should be proud. Who knew that Brice’s brush with the law would intertwine these two families together and give everyone a new spark in life? The Easts got their son back and the Harpers brought back fond memories of what family life was like in their home.

Overall the story was a nice blend of suspense, danger, and family, mixed within this contemporary romance. I love her style, her character development, the emotion she evokes and the happy ending that reminds me why I love romance stories so much. It is always a total pleasure to read a story by Donna Grant.

This review was originally posted on Addicted To RomanceI received this book for free from Library in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

The Christmas Cowboy Hero is the first book in this trilogy which is focused around the Harper siblings. A couple of weeks ago I read book three (Clay's book) and it was fantastic and so when I discovered this book at my local library, I snatched it right up and it also has some Christmas time elements which was a fun element too. Donna Grant has always been a personal favorite author of mine, and her writing is potently engaging and in this book I was swept up and I stayed up half the night reading it because I just didn't want to put it down. I will say that there isn't anything "out of this world" about this book, but it was such a fun story and I was on board with the romance that is written here.

The Christmas Cowboy Hero was Abbie's book and I really love her as a human being. I admired her strength and courage that she displays. When Abbie turned eighteen, her mother left her and her younger brothers and turned over guardianship to her. Abbie, loved her brothers and refused to put them in foster care just because it would be easier. So she has worked hard, slowly working on her CPA degree, and living paycheck to paycheck. But when her youner brother, get in trouble with the law, she pleads her case with the ranch owner. Clayton, has recently returned home when hearing that his father is having heart problems and thieving going on at home. But when he meets Abbie and her younger brother, he knows that he can help out a kid who has fallen on hard times and did a wrong thing for the right reason, so he wants to guide him on the right path. He offers to allow him to pay off the debt by working at the ranch with him.

The romance that forms between Clayton and Abbie is so endearing and you instantly become a cheerleader for both of them. Both Clayton and Abbie have some painful pasts but are such strong people and deserve a happy ending and the love that they find together. Clayton has spent many years as a SEAL and has survived when many of his teammembers never returned and he bears guilt over the death of his brother. Abbie has had to be strong for her brothers and hasn't done anything for herself. But once she meets Clayton, she realizes that she needs something more in her life than just working herself to death. She wants to be happy and to really LIVE life to its fullest. Even though she struggles at times with thinking that a future with Clayton is actually possible she realizes that she needs to fight for the future that she wants with Clayton.
You’ve been doing things for everyone but yourself. When are you going to let someone do something for you..?

Another aspect that we see in this story is the suspense that gets added to the plot. I really enjoyed this aspect because it doesn't take away from the actual romance in the story, but is an added element that adds some conflict for the characters (and not just Clayton and Abbie but also the brothers) We see some true villains in this book and seeing them overcome these villains and come out on top was truly a journey to read. I really enjoyed seeing all the pieces come together and even though at times it could be a bit predictable, I didn't mind it. But then Donna Grant has a unique storytelling voice that the reader finds compelling no matter what the scenario is.

The only downside to the story was the holiday aspects....I was expecting  more in this story and have more of a Christmas Cheer type of feeling considering its a small town setting, but didn't really get that cozy Christmas feel like I was expecting. You see the season of course, but its downplayed which is why the rating of this book isn't higher because I found this element a bit lacking.

Overall, I found, The Christmas Cowboy Hero to be a story of the value of living life to its fullest, to embracing the delights and surprises, a story to be savored!!!

Ex-Navy SEAL called home to save the family ranch meets beautiful woman struggling to raise her two younger brothers when she arrives at the local jail to bail out the eldest brother for cattle rustling...from the SEAL's family's ranch. Talk about complicated. I found the premise of this book to be interesting and promising and once settled in, I enjoyed the characters even though they were quite predictable. I found myself wanting to see more dimension in the plot line and something beyond the expected. One thing that really drew me out of the story was some inconsistencies in details - things I'm surprised weren't caught in a final edit. For these reasons, my rating dropped to 3 stars.

THE CHRISTMAS COWBOY HERO by Donna Grant is exactly what I needed to read after a long day and I completely fell in love with Clayton and Abby as their story unfolded in front of my eyes.

Ex-Seal Clayton East knows death and destruction first-hand but when he leaves the Navy he does not return to his home as the ranch where he grew up, holds too many memories that cut too deeply since that tragic accident all those years ago. But when he receives a phone call telling him his father is ill and they are about to lose everything, Clayton knows that he must return home and sort things out for the people who care about him the most, no matter how difficult it may be.

Abby Harper is strong and determined. She had to be ever since the day her mother walked out and left her to raise her two younger brothers, Brice and Caleb. Working all the hours she can while trying to study for her degree still doesn't make ends meet though and there are times where Abby doesn't know how they will survive. But they have each other and that is all that matters. They may not be able to trust anyone else but Abby knows that she will never abandon them.
But when she discovers that her brother was involved in a serious crime involving the East ranch, Abby is terrified at what will happen. Meeting Clayton East will change all of the Harper's lives forever, and the closer Abby gets to Clayton the more she craves this kind-hearted man with sorrow in his eyes. But can two broken-hearted souls find a way to heal their pain together? And who is really behind the trouble at the ranch and would use Abby's younger brother in the process?

Gripping, sexy, with a dash of danger thrown in for good measure, and THE CHRISTMAS COWBOY HERO by Donna Grant is the perfect cocktail for a wonderful novel. The characters are so engaging and relatable, and I really wanted Abby to find the strength to trust again as she had been through so much taking care of everyone but herself. Clayton is a dynamic and refreshing character who does whatever it takes to protect the people he cares for and I really felt for him when he opened up about what happened all those years ago. There is plenty of stunning scenery described in this novel, and the pace never lets this story down.
THE CHRISTMAS COWBOY HERO by Donna Grant is a thrilling, passionate, and heartwarming story of family, love, and strength and I could not put this book down.

This is a heartwarming story of love overcoming tragedy, emotional healing and true family values, together with a suspense filled mystery with danger and drama - a great read!

Ex-Navy SEAL, Clayton East has recently returned home after receiving a call for help from his Mum. The ranch is in financial difficulties because someone they trusted has stolen from all their investments and accounts. Now he's endeavouring to ensure his family doesn't lose everything. Cattle rustlers stealing his prize bull and hundreds of pregnant heifers is definitely not what he was expecting but nor was being so attracted to the guardian of the only rustler caught!

When she was eighteen years old, Abby Harper took responsibility for raising her two younger brothers after their mother abandoned them. She's done her best to raise them well and is devastated when one is caught stealing cattle. She's a feisty, self reliant and headstrong young lady but this is just too much. She's so relieved when her brother is given the chance to work off his crime on East ranch, the one he was stealing from, by Clayton. However she didn't expect to be so attracted to the wealthy, hard-working hero and his family - maybe life will take a turn for the better, if only they can abandon their abandonment issues and trust love to find a way!

What a lovely festive romance this proved to be! The main characters all face their own turmoil and dilemmas which influence their interactions. It is great to see how the ranch and working their has such a positive impact on the attitudes and behaviour of the two brothers and that Abby is also key in solving who is behind the rustling and in recovering the stolen fortune. This is an action packed festive romance with strong families coming together to become an even stronger unit. Love will find a way whatever the season!

I requested and received a copy of this novel, via NetGalley. This is my honest review after choosing to read it.

Three and a half
This is a classic prodigal son returns home story but with the added twist of some cattle rustling ! Plus it's all set in the run up to Christmas so expect sweet moments designed to melt the coldest heart.
This story actually had a lot going on with a cowboy/Seal hero returning home to the last place he really wants to be. Yet Clayton isn't the typical wounded hero no, he's simply a man tired of death with demons of his own . He's come home to help save his families ranch but quickly realises that it's going to take patience as he knows exactly who holds the answers he's looking for.
Abby is the soul carer of her two brothers but when one gets involved in cattle rustling she's way out of her depth and has never felt so alone. So when Clayton suggests her brother Brice can work off his debt it's a welcome relief but there's still the matter of who stole the cattle to solve .
Plenty of attraction going on between this couple and yes it's a wee bit cheesy at times but as a feel good Christmas story it worked. I enjoyed reading about the boys simple joy in learning about ranch life and the suspense added greatly but I did question how easy it was for everyone to accept that Brice although admitting to being involved wasn't pushed more for information . Plus I'm not sure if Abby's work colleagues were meant to be a red herring or not as it did seem at one point that things might connect. Whatever the author intended I can't fault the warm Christmas atmosphere and life at the ranch seemed idyllic and lets face it at this joyful time of year what could be better?
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

I have a paperback of this one signed by the author. But to read I got the ebook from the library.

I really enjoyed this. I'm not sure who would be next in this series. The characters are nicely developed. The police seemed totally inept. The individuals had to figure things out themselves.

I loved the characters and the family setting. The ranch with its chores, animals, and good cooking. That seems to be a key in cowboy stories. Both Clayton and Abby had difficulties in their past which they were working past. There were some real sexy times, faster than I expected.

The title on this one made it irresistible and it wasn't far into the story that I found even more reasons to be in love with this first in series.

The Christmas Cowboy Hero tells the story of two broken people beaten down by their past and just getting by until events conspire to bring the pair together so their attraction along with a bit of Christmas magic can bring them romance and bring their families for healing and happiness.

Clayton and Abby, separate and together, were a great hero and heroine. He's a former SEAL who still hasn't gotten over the death of his brother along with the struggles to heal after war while she has had the responsibility of her two younger brothers since she was eighteen and it has been a long struggle. Encountering Abby and her brothers was great for Clayton and, though Abby mistrusted the goodness that was Clayton and his parents, it was the best thing that ever happened to her and her brothers, too. Clayton gave them all a second chance with his big generous heart that was bruised, but still there. Loved seeing him interact with all of them with patience and understanding.

The romance was paced so well. It wove between the suspense part of the story and Clayton and Abby's individual issues easily. The attraction was there from the beginning, but so was their baggage from the past. They both faced their attraction with trepidation, but owned up to their issues so that I could enjoy their sizzling romance progress and cheer them on to happiness.

The holiday element was there, but not overpowering. It was a great denouement after the exciting climax events.

All in all, I was well-pleased with this first installment to the Heart of Texas series and look forward to more wonderful stories along the line of The Christmas Cowboy Hero. This is a great match for those who enjoy a modern western holiday romance.

My thanks to St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Clayton East is a former Navy SEAL with PTSD. He didn’t go home after his service because he was concerned how the man he had become would affect his family. When he is called home due to his father’s illness, he goes out of his sense of duty to his family but has reservations. When he gets home, he discovers the farm that has been in his family for hundreds of years is facing severe financial issues. Their prize bull and a 100 head of cattle have been stolen and their CPA has embezzled most of their funds, leaving bills unpaid and past due.

Abby Harper is dedicated to raising her two brothers. When she turned 18, her mother left guardianship of her brothers to her and left. Now 26, she is struggling to make ends meet. She works 60 hour weeks as a CPA assistant, taking college classes as she can afford to, working on her CPA. The last thing she needs is her oldest brother, Brice, getting arrested for cattle rustling.

When Abby arrives at the jail to find out what she can do, she discovers Clayton there as well, pressing charges against Brice. Abby leaves disheartened. After meeting Abby, Clayton is intrigued by her. After hearing her history from a deputy, he decides to let Brice come to the ranch to work off his debt instead of pressing charges - with hopes of getting to know Abby better as well.

Clayton hides his PTSD from his family, as well as his pain and self blaming over the death of his brother. As he continues to fight for the family ranch to recover and interact with Abby and her brothers, we see what a kind, big hearted, persistent, protective guy he is.

Abby always presents a tough front because her brothers look to her for support and guidance. She’s never dealt with her abandonment issues. When the East family pulls Abby and her brothers into their fold, she keeps waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Not too much angst. A little feet dragging and wariness by Abby. I didn’t really get too much Christmas from this story. Mostly discussions about decorations and trees. Overall a quick, light, easy read that flows well.

ARC REVIEW

The Christmas Cowboy Hero by Donna Grant is one of those that makes you think in terms that they are real. In the back of my mind the pessimist kept saying, 'It's too good to be true Abby! Don't believe it." but then I kept reminding myself, "It's a romance of course it's too good to be true because it isn't true, it's fiction. Shut up and let them have their HEA!" So it is a little unbelievable but it's such a good story and Abby and her brothers deserve that HEA.

Clayton East left home as soon as he could, he joined the NAVY and went on to become a SEAL, now he's working in Africa protecting animals against poachers. That is until he gets a call from telling him his father has had a mild stroke and the ranch is in trouble. So the prodigal son returns.

Abby Harper has been taking care of her two younger brother since she was eighteen and their mother walked out on them signing guardianship over to Abby. Their father had died some years before that and so Abby devoted her life to making sure the boys get by. She has taken some courses but it's taking longer than normal to get her CPA certification in the meantime she's working as a grunt in someone else's firm. It hasn't been easy and it's about to get worse when Abby gets a call from the sheriff says her brother Brice has been arrested for cattle rustling. Clay is taken with Abby, she's beautiful and willing to do whatever it takes to take care of her brothers even if it means paying off the amount the cattle was worth. Clay is also sympathetic to the Harper family and suggest an alternative that her brother works of his debt by working on his ranch.

Clay pretty much falls in love with Abby at first sight and as much as he never wanted to stay at the ranch he missed it and Abby and her brothers fit in perfectly, even his parents love them. Abby is trying not to get her hopes up but Clay makes it impossible to say no to. It's not all going to be easy because the man behind the cattle rustling is willing to do anything to get rid of the powerful East Ranch empire.

Overall, This is one of my favorite Christmas Romance book this year so far. Donna Grant is a fantastic author and she really knows how to pull you in. This is the first of a new series so I will definitely catch the next one, especially if it features the sexy Deputy Danny.
