What would you do if offered five minutes alone with the person who killed the person you loved?
After a three-year search, the CIA has finally captured the head of a terrorist cell in Yemen, Ameen Asal. CIA Agent Cole Parker is offered five minutes alone with Ameen, the man who killed his fiancée. For a man trained to kill, Cole’s choice is obvious. Unfortunately, life is never that simple. Cole must decide if acting on his revenge is worth the lives of three Americans. Cole travels to Yemen teamed with FBI agent Kate Simms (a former one night stand) and her partner Russell Ford. What Cole decides to do with Ameen could lead to regrets bigger than the loss of his fiancée. The events that transpire after the meeting, while shocking, are nothing compared to the revelation of not only who is helping Ameen, but why.
Cole won't know to what depths of evil the person went until he get's an answer to the question, "Did Harry have a dog?"
Mark writes mystery/suspense/thrillers. He's all about the big surprise ending. His first book, Class Dismissed, has an ending hardly anyone sees coming... Solitaire has an even more surprising twist!
Let's start with WOW! As I said before, when I won this book as a giveaway on Goodreads, it's not my usual genre. I think I put my name in because the description resembled the type of book my lunchtime friend likes to read. Then, when I received it, I decided to give it a few minutes and then pass it along to my friend. I was not prepared for it to draw me in and hold me until I finished it. I think I actually speed-read the last few chapters wishing it wasn't true. I may have even repeated "no, NO, NO" out loud. I must admit, I knew the "who" about half-way through, but the "why" didn't occur to me until the explosion that leveled the publishing company. As I read on, waiting for my suspicions to be realized, I still couldn't escape the grip this book had on me. I had to keep going and it did not disappoint. The style, the tone and the description that gets the point across without being too graphic or too detailed was a welcome change from the novels that leave nothing to the imagination. If you're looking for a blood and guts graphic novel, look elsewhere. But if you art looking for a masterful storyteller who gives you the feeling that he is retelling events that were part of his actual experience, then grab a copy of Solitaire and prepare yourself for an adventure. I'm still going to pass it along to my friend - but I think my daughter wants it first! Thank you, Mark!

In the end, it's a sinister twist on the age-old adage that everything happens for a reason.
This is without doubt one of the most twisted tales of intrigue I have read. It is a book where the protagonist truly cannot trust a soul. When he thinks he can trust someone in his quest for answers, he definitely cannot. It makes for very interesting reading.
I did not see the end coming! I figured out who some of the bad guys were -just not all of them! And the biggest one of the bad guys that I missed left me speechless when I found out!!
I just KNEW there'd be a twist to this and I tried to outsmart myself in figuring it out. No worries. Petry once again tricked me in the best way. FANTASTIC read!! Super thrilling, twisty, and entertaining.
I started and finished this book in one day. This story has lots of twists and turns. It keeps you guessing and second guessing your guess. Thank you Mark Petry for another fun read!
Solitaire was an excellent thriller. Loved the characters, plot and overall story. Well worth buying! I will definitely be following and reading more of Mark Petry's works.
I was gifted a copy of this book and read a good portion of it during a non-stop Trans-Atlantic flight and immediately, I was hooked. Mark Petry's has the ability to lure readers into a deeply personal world, while telling the tale that transcends from a horrible event and emotional anguish for the main character. The human drama of Solitaire has the breadth of a real life experience, mixed in with a variety of personalities that are disturbingly real and very funny! As with all of Mark's novels, the element of "surprise" at the end makes you want to go back and re-read certain chapters to find his clues. This intellectual nutrient is so fundamental to crime novels because it makes you want more. Hopefully, there's a sequel!
I had high expectations for this book given the intriguing premise and possibilities for the intense interrogation. But the 5 minutes of that scene lasted just that and was quickly over, leaving somewhat of a hollow plot. What really bothered me though was the incredible number of rapid-fire and sometimes ridiculous similes in every chapter. Example: "She thought of salmon swimming upstream as a metaphor of the challenge to remain calm as her adrenaline fueled her heartbeat to a rhythm that would rival a Metallica track." They totally distracted me and took away from the enjoyment of the book.
Mark is an upcoming and author that when you read his books it feels like he is an industry veteran. With Solitaire the theater of the mind opens and you can visually imagine the scenes. Great character development and a plot twist at the end you don't see coming. Highly Recommend for reading.
