Primarian Mates #3

His Rebellious Mate

Rate this book
Staunchly loyal Eryn Lockwood heads up security on the USIF Odyssey, an all-female research ship charged with finding a new world to call home. Her team is guarding a group of scientists exploring an uninhabited planet when they are set upon by a band of powerful alien warriors. Entranced by Eryn’s long auburn hair, fair skin, and green eyes, the fiercest of the attackers gives chase, and claims her for his own. Though passion ignites between them, she remains steadfast in her need to escape.

To fulfill her mission and save her people, she commits an unpardonable act, something she’ll never forget… and he can never forgive. Returning to Earth, she attempts to pick up the pieces of her life, but thoughts of her gorgeous, golden-eyed alien consume her.

Master Warrior Ramikin, the biggest, baddest, and most skilled fighter on Primaria, has never been bested — until now! And by the beautiful Earth woman destined to be his! Furious, he lets her go, resolved to eradicate her from his thoughts. But Eryn’s face haunts his dreams, and he lives every day yearning for what can never be.

An alliance between their worlds thrusts them back together, but not everyone is in favor of mingling their two species. When harassment by anti-integration zealots turns violent, Ram races to her rescue, but he is seconds too late. With her life hanging by a thread, the deep, mate-bond between them becomes clear.

Is there hope for the independent, rebellious soldier and the proud warrior she betrayed? Can he bring himself to forgive her? Will they be able to put aside the past and come together to fight those who would tear them apart? And, as they accept their fate, can Eryn and Ram rekindle the spark they once shared?

So, the "unpardonable act" is that she escaped a "man" who kidnapped her. Sigh. This is yet another book in which the heroine is punished for very reasonably objecting to being carried off against her will.

This one felt very tedious, probably because it rehashed a bunch of stuff already explained in the two previous books.

Probably 2.5 stars since I really liked Eryn and I didn't hate Ram as much as I hate normal romance heroes. Which doesn't mean he was not annoying as all hell to start because he really was.

I was not a fan of the coma flashbacks though. At all

I have mixed feelings about this book and some about the series. This book, in particular, was more than a slog to complete. Several times, I planned to put it down due to frustration but ended up skipping at times to get to the end.

Pros: the writing is so good. Maddie Taylor is a really good writer who has a terrific cadence and flow in her work. Her characters are typically well defined, mostly 3D, and have a realness that's great to read. And wow, she can write a sex scene like nobody's business. Gulp.

Cons: that good writing lets a lot of superfluous content get past her editors. There are numerous passages, from a couple of paragraphs to whole chapters, that shouldn't be here. Often, they are almost off topic. It's like MT had notes that just got added as padding where none was needed. Unfortunately, this same method doesn't benefit her character descriptions. Many times, her lead characters have very little backstory. Yet quite late in the game, a secondary character spills the beans on critical history that "explains" some stupid behavior on the part of a female/make lead. In this book, it impacts both leads. It reads sloppy at best or poorly written at worst. Very frustrating for the reader with a brain that tracks things like this.

Overall, while I do like this series, the misogynist culture is quite overboard. I'm unsure how it will work out in the end, and not sure if I'm willing to stick it out. Also, ratcheting up the high school angst between couples isn't entertaining at all. There's tons of that in the YA section, but here we'd like less of that.

One last note...the heating up of the purists and the racist Earthlings does not bode well. It's quite clear who the purists leader is, so boring non-mystery there. The Earth haters are typical 1-dimensional Snidely Whiplash types. And I wish authors would stop their own cultural stereotyping on that. The "bad" people are always drawn as "country" with a k. They are broad stereotypes for racists, with their country accents, use of the word "ain't", over-the-top stupid comments/acts, all designed to ensure they are drawn as uneducated, hateful rubes. I think we all know in this current age that many of the most hateful, racist individuals are powerful, highly educated, manipulative people with no country accents involved. Just saying, I would rather read fewer stereotypes and more inventive writing of evil villians with less obvious plots.

I'm not sure if this series, even with MD's superior writing, will conclude well. The upcoming book guarantees even more babyish angst that's frankly boring. Maybe the next one will be better.

** Read the Complete series, reviewed as one book **

Time to get your "Mars needs Earth women" trope fix on. Maddie Taylor's The Primarian Mates series will fulfill your jones for alien/Earther relations quite well. The series follows four couples through meeting on a distant planet, through the women's less than happy "capture", political intrigue on the planet Primaria to their happily ever afters. There is a thread of happenings that follow through each book with a resolution at the last which interconnects each book. The women are traveling the universe in search of a new planet after catastrophic natural disasters overtake Earth. Kerr is the Princep of Primaria and on a hunt when he and his friends come across the women. Instant "knowledge" that mates are among their midst has the men capturing the women and bringing them home.

Each story (Barbarian Mate, His by Command, His Rebellious Mate, and Defying the General) has uber-alpha yet adoring men with a BDSM bent (slight themes, nothing over-the-top or violent) and intelligent, loyal women who clash as their respective cultures are extremely different. Each couple's conflict is different, each experiencing their own trauma, and coming together for a happily ever after.

These are a fun sci-fi romp with healthy doses of sexy sprinkled throughout. If you are looking for a light read with action, humor and good world-building these are a great choice

Eryn and Ram are my new favourite book couple.

Whilst all these stories can be read stand alone, I do recommend reading the whole series, both for the story arc and the sheer wonderfulness of them. This story just had so much going on, I had wondered how we'd find out some of what happened during Eryn's time with Ram on Primaria. I'm not going to say how we find out that story, but it was both inspired and, if not unique, at least very unusual. And it worked so incredibly well.

It felt like we had a lot more of Erin's perspective in this book, and I absolutely adored her. The scenes following their reuniting on Earth were truly heart wrenching and even brought me to tears at times. However the book doesn't end there, oh no, the author built a truly layered story that was full of emotion and intrigue. She wrote two amazing main characters in Ram and Eryn, and it was great to find out more about Lana and Trask too.

This series is so much better than many of the sci-fi romances out there and I highly recommend it.

Four stars

I really wanted to love this book, but while it was still a good read, there was a lot of thinking back, and I just did not enjoy this book as much as the others.

Spoiler alert

All the time and thoughts while she was in a coma, all the misunderstandings... the real downer for me was when they were separated they had sex with other people, her experience was painful but he had lots of meaningless sex with no pain? Really. The story premise for this series is that they would be faithful or suffer pain. When they get back together all is forgiven... this feisty strong woman just wimps out. Sorry, I just think that she says I had a painful one night stand and he confesses he slept with all those women... and its just.. oh.. ok...

Eryn and Ram's story is a hard one to read, mostly because there is so much that goes on between them, and it's hard for them to figure out what is going on. They are both so miserable and both stubborn AF.

I felt really sad for Eryn because of everything that happened and everything she has to go through. I think Ram made her feel really crappy sometimes, and that just eats at a person, and then, even after they got through everything, she just couldn't get past everything and it made her feel even worse.

I don't think that Ram or Eryn are really to blame for anything that happens. I think that it just happened. They were both stubborn and both refused to try to get to the other person's POV.

I really do like the way the story works out though.

I almost did not read this book, I already had read a bit about what had happened between this 2 in the previous books and there were a couple of things I did not like at all.
I am glad I chose to give this book a try, I really like how their past was told, just enough to clear the air on what had happened between them without repeating the whole abduction process.
Very interested in the bigger plot

This isn't for me. I looked it up, story too long. I want 200 pages, not over 500 pages. First 60 pages, nothing, just both MCs dreaming of sex. Boring.
I want interaction and passion. Story to pull me in, not put me to sleep.

His Rebellious Mate

Oh how I love this series. Each book has it's own story but blend in with the other perfectly without taking from the other. These hot hunky Aliens have a hard time adjusting to independent, strong, self reliant human women. BUT....love has a way ...

Good

I loved Ram and Eryn, but didn't quite like the story telling. Part of the story is told while Eryn was in a coma. What was significant of her reliving parts of her life? And how did those people know that Eryn was pregnant progRam's baby, when she thought she was pregnant
