by Nina Harrington

NIna Harrington is a prolific writer of romance, an instructor of entrepreneurial, craft writing and self publishing. She knows what she's talking about, drawing on her experience from the science field where she previously worked and her experience of over 15 years as a published writer. Her latest release is all about overcoming fear to reach your writing goals.

Harrington discusses a tried and trusted plan to overcome fear, to stop procrastination, and to succeed in a writing career. This book is for fiction and nonfiction writers alike. Fear and procrastination as a reply if that fear haunts all writers regardless of content.

By changing the mindset, writers can move beyond what is holding them back. While not a psychological therapy book, it has many steps to help a writer toward their goal. Nina Harrington is a prolific writer and she wants to help other writers become prolific as well. This book gets the right kind of motivation behind the writer, urging them toward the finish line. Using the 5-step plan, it can be related to other areas of anyone's life to stop procrastination and find routines for the ultimate productivity.

Clear, concise, practical advice on how to focus on your goals and get it done. I'm a fan of the Pomodoro technique mentioned, as well as other exercises to keep it simple and keep the writer productive and motivated. If you're a writer feeling pulled in different directions or wondering how to get it all done, this is a great read.

This book would probably be more useful if I was earlier in my writing career. I would highly recommend for new writers. The frightening part was the statistic that only 5% of writers list unable to concentrate as the problem they have with productivity. But that's my number one problem. So, she didn't really help me to fix my issue.

A book about writing I can relate to. I’m not sure why it resonated with me maybe because it got to the point. Instead a little bit of information and mostly fluff, it was the opposite. I did whisper to myself ‘how did you know?’ I will say it dragged towards the end, but worth exploring if you’re looking to become a writer.

If you're a beginning writer, or a writer struggling to finish that first novel, this is the type of book you need. Harrington discusses the reasons behind procrastination (hint: The answer is in the title) and offers some helpful tips for getting the words on the page.

I have read a writing book from Nina before and I did a free course that she offered on her website. I found both pretty helpful.

This is a far deeper analysis of some of the strategies and issues she raised there.
She floats an idea that I haven’t thought about. If you leave something to the last minute and do it before the due date in an all-nighter, driven by caffeine, stress and fear of failure, and then you collapse in a heap for days afterwards - you create a negative memory of the event. You don’t remember how good it felt to get it done. Or the pride that you did your best work. What you remember is the stress and the fear. Honestly, it might not even be your best work. It’s just done, that’s all.
So, the next time you’re facing a similar task… bang. Ugly thoughts return with that negative memory.
How do you fix that?
To paraphrase the old Polish expression, this is your circus and these are your monkeys. (Kindle Locations 391-392)

[I am totally stealing that phrase.]
She suggests that the only person you should be competing with is yourself.
The idea from years of parents and teachers telling you to work on the stuff you aren’t good at so that it can improve, is just reinforcing the negative. That’s not how the world works. If you are really good at writing, why would you set yourself up for failure at maths?
Oh, yeah. Huh.
The lizard brain rears its ugly head. I mean, she literally just described my life.
The more we care about our work and life and want it to be the best possible, then the more we fear the horror of something going wrong and come crashing down on top of us, and all of the misery and pain and criticism that could come with that possible failure. In other words, our fear of a future risk or threat of pain triggers our brain to shift into attack mode, as though we were facing a real physical danger. (Kindle Locations 901-906).

There are a lot of exercises where you have to sit down and write out your own thoughts and fears, and desires. It was very informative. And of course, the answers are different for everyone. I discovered a few things about myself.
For example: I want to see one of my books in a physical form that I can hold in my hand and place on my vanity shelf. I don’t want to see it on a bookstore shelf. Those are different things. And my desire is easily ticked with Print on Demand. Why waste all the energy and time trying to get a traditional book publishing contract if that ISN’T what I want?
Working on the right things but in the wrong order can not only waste time, energy and money but throw you off track when you have to go back and forth, and fill in the gaps you should have done the first time around. (Kindle Locations 1460-1462)

Ouch.
As a trained scientist she uses gap analysis. This is where you are, this is where you want to be - what do you have to do to get from one to the other? Break it all down into tiny steps and when you tick each one off, you get that ‘yay me’ kick.
Get addicted to that.

Clear, logical and effective

Wasn't sure was I was getting when I first picked up this book but I knew I needed something-anything to get my head focused on writing. I've tried dozens of other books but this one... spoke to my inner fear paralyzed geek and forced her to think through the situation. The system described in it is magic. No not the wand waving kind but the sort of magic that happens when the reality of your actions are placed in front of you then shatter the fear gripping your body, mind and heart.
By practice I'm not a procrastinator so why in the world was I procrastinating with writing? And why was this procrastination spilling over into other areas of my life?
Then I read this book and now I know.
If I could give this book 100 stars I would. It was a fast, impactful read that really made me stop and take time to think and smell the roses.
The discussion and logic on how fear based procrastination form was clear and surprisingly familiar. It was like the author knew my life and understood the challenges of being a day job working mom struggling to do it all AND achieve her writing career dreams.
The other most significant thing that grabbed me-the author has a scientist background. I, too, am a scientist and struggle reading self help writing books that don't have enough... how do I put it?... references that support a logic statement.
This book has those but uses the references in am impactful way to drive home the main point: you the author are in control of your career and life.
So if you're an author who struggles to get your head in the game, read this book and see for yourself how logical, success driven creatives modify their thinking and approach to realizing not only their dream but their potential.
(disclaimer: yes I'm a writer but received no encouragement from this author to either read or love this book. All comments and thoughts in this review are my own and hastily typed on my iPad after downloading this book with my KU subscription and then reading it front to back in less than an hour)

How to Become A Fearless Writer: How to Stop Procrastinating, break Fee of Self-Doubt, and Build A Profitable Career, is a book that every writer needs to read several times. The first time to get an overview of its content. The second time, slowly, to devour all the wisdom that Nina Harringon has to share with you. Then again, this time focusing on those parts that speak to the specific problem areas you are facing at the moment.

In this exceptional book, Nina debunks all the myths we’ve all heard and been told about why we procrastinate and provides solid a solid foundation to explore the reasons we procrastinate. Nina also provides us with all the tools we need to overcome our fears and our fear induced procrastination. Nina shows us the way to turn procrastination into productivity. Harringtom writes not as an academic, but as a writer who experienced procrastination and shares with us here the very techniques that she used to push away all the fears and become the productive, prolific writer that she is today.

I wish that I had this book when I started my career as a technical writer forty-plus years ago.

Not what I expected

This review may not be entirely fair to the author, but it's how I felt. A lot if the information was repetitive or nothing I hadn't heard before. I am a person full of self-doubt and was hoping to truly be inspired to overcome that, but instead i got a list or "steps" on how to write lists and "imagine my successes", etc. There were some good tips but....this one just bored me. The first two she wrote in this series were much more helpful and beneficial in actually planning things. Kind of disappointed, as this is the book I'd been looking forward to. Again though, others might find it truely helpful and get much more out of it than i did, so I'd still recommend writers to read it for themselves and decide which parts to take away with you.

Type A personality? Yup. That's me. So the subtitle, 'How to Stop Procrastinating' made me wonder if this book wasn't really for me. I would classify myself as an experienced writer who has been studying the craft, formally and informally, for years. Did I need a book like this? And then I waded into it on Amazon's Look Inside feature. I knew I needed this book. Nina outlines a five step model for kicking yourself into high gear. The first, titled Motivation, was especially helpful for me. If you plunk down the cashola for this book, make sure you do the exercises (of which there are only a few). You won't be sorry. This was just the shot in the arm I needed.

recommend for anyone wanting to improve

Do you get stuck? Have trouble sticking to a writing routine? This book is for you. The author outlines many optional ways for you to create a master-list and stick to it.
Allot yourself a certain amount of time each day — to complete your top 3 priorities. Know how long a task will take
This book shows us how to stop procrastinating and how to rid ourselves of the negative thoughts and energy we’ve accumulated. Procrastinating does not mean we’re lazy.

You’ll lean how to make time each day for all your tasks and how to always have time for reading and writing.

Highly recommend this book

The most valuable part of this book (for me personally) was Harrington's adaptation of the Pomodoro method, and the method of writing in shorter sprints which apparently works for her. Looking forward to putting it into practice tomorrow, sober and early.

As much a self help/productivity/entrepreneurial book as a writing book per se, but aimed directly at the writer. There's times in my life this wouldn't be the book I needed, but today, it absolutely was.

Lots of helpful information here. I do think that it would be particularly helpful for newer writers rather than established writers but there’s still a lot to take away from it!
