South Shore’s bad boy surfer Beau Huntington has a solid plan to get through life: one night stands, copious amounts of alcohol, and walls so high no one can ever get in — it’s all about numbing the pain. And his plan’s working fine — until he meets Corrie Johnson. That’s when things begin to unravel. Because falling in love was never part of the plan. Angry, bitter and confused, Beau’s violent temper lands him in trouble more often than not — but he’s about to learn that the fight of his life doesn’t involve his fists. Hell Bent is a story that matters - about life, love and death. It's a story of how life can spiral out of control for those left behind. And it's a story of hope.
This is a very good debut novel from Aussie author Karen Crompton
With instinctive and perceptive insight, the author successfully manages to convey the troubled emotions that result from young love, loss, depression and grief. This book should appeal to adults and young adults alike as a stand alone novel in its own right, but it would also, I believe, be helpful for anyone suffering from any the above-mentioned states.
Beau Huntington is the local heart throb, seriously good looking and with the buff physique of a seasoned surfer, he is never short of a cute girl to flaunt about, and who will gladly satisfy his needs and desires. He is however, a young man with issues, well known around South Shore, his Beachside town, as a bit of a rebel with a dark moody streak that regularly gets him into trouble. His one and only good friend, Rake, is a constant companion who shares Beau's love of surfing and tries to keep him out of strife wherever he can.
Beau is seriously troubled with nightmares as a result of certain tragic events a few years previously, and refuses to acknowledge it is the cause of his angst, nor that he needs help to come to terms with it. He now finds himself in trouble with the law, again, and is very close this time to blowing everything. Though he is on Summer holidays now, he has been sentenced to do so many hours of community work at the local pool as punishment for his latest outburst. His family despair at his seeming unwillingness to behave and get back on track, they fear he will end up in gaol this time if he doesn't stop his binge drinking and fighting and one night stands. Then something totally out of the blue happens that stops Beau in his tracks and will become the cause of so much more mental anguish that he doesn't know how to deal with it.... What happens to Beau next could very well send him over the edge.
This is Karen Crompton's first novel in what might be a series, and if this is anything to go by, then it is promising indeed. The story is very well written with lots of insight into the psyche of her characters and their individual dispositions. Karen gives the reader an authentic look at some of the very real and destructive consequences of depression and its domino effects on those suffering from it or those close to someone who is. She is able to convey a real sense of what the collateral damage can look and feel like from her unique perspective.
Only one issue had me confused early in the book where I was at times unsure of who was speaking, but that seemed to have sorted itself out and I was soon fully immersed in the story. I was amused several times by some of the witty turns of phrase and mentally congratulated the author on some very skilled writing. I look forward to her next book and have no hesitation in recommending Hell Bent (South Shore Beach, # 1). to other readers. 4★s.
Kindly received an ARC in exchange for an honest review
So this is the first time I'm writing a proper review in a while and this is the first book in a long time I properly read through till the end.
So what can I say about this book? This definitely deals with how real life problems hit families and the toll it takes on them. Specially the topic of suicide. I liked how it was in the background and how the author showed how families really handled situations like that. Not that I'm saying I liked reading about that topic but the approach to that topic was done in a more realistic manner. I liked in the end even the family didn't take a total 180 degree change and become all lovey dovey and started acting all nice to each other. I liked how they changed in a more realistic manner and they still was the same with Beau. Next about the romance, let me just tell you when I started the book the romance was what kept me reading it but by the end it was the romance that wanted me stop reading it halfway through. More than romance the cause of it was Corrie. She just freaking got on my nerves. Yes she did go through a lot of trouble cuz of her dad and she has all the right in the world to be angry at Beau but sometimes she was way too childish. Specially with the screaming. That made me annoyed with her. But then I guess different people would react to situations differently based on their emotions. Thinking that I kept on reading till the end :D Beau, I don't know about him. Basically he was what kept me reading the book. I liked how he didn't completely change cuz of what happened but he gradually started turning a new leaf. They were small changes but he slowly started turning his life around which was more realistic than becoming a saint all of a sudden. Talking about the side characters they are quiet easy to forget. There are some books where you simply cannot forget the sidekicks but in this they were not that memorable. At first I thought Alana would be fun and a nice person to read about but then she came out stupid too. Specially when she didn't do anything when Corrie got drunk and started dirty dancing at Jackson's party. If I was Alana I would have dragged Corrie's sorry ass from the table and sobered her up rather than waiting till Beau showed up and then saying sorry.
There were a lot of annoying traits in every character but other than that this was a pretty solid YA novel which deals with contemporary problems. I would definitely recommend it to anyone I know. Happy reading folks!
What we have here my lovelies is a cute love story that touches on a couple of serious issues. Be warned going into this story that it will touch on something that might be a trigger for some people. While it took me a minute to get use to the Aussie slang the story was quite good. The writing was excellent and the dialogue flowed easily. I loved that it was told from Beau's POV. Being in his head, experiencing his emotions and being privy to his thoughts was a change. I'm so use to reading from the females POV that sometimes I get frustrated. I like knowing what the guys think. Although, there was a few instances I'd have loved to be in Corrie's head. Beau is gorgeous, charming and a player but the boy has some serious deep seated issues in this book that cause him to act irrationally and hurt those around him. Until the day he runs into witty, charming and utterly gorgeous Corrie Johnson. She's smart, determined and has no time for a boy like Beau and his baggage. What can I say? Beau's reputation precedes him. But he's finally found someone he wants to feel worthy of. So, of course, the chase is on. We met the two best friends, Rake and Alarna. I fell in love with them just as much as I did with Corrie and Beau. Alarna, Corrie's BFF, is just absolutely adorable. She has a love for vintage movies and even spews quotes from them for crying out loud! How is that not adorable. Rake, Beau's BFF, is like a male version of Alarna without the love of vintage movies. His love is the waves. The loyalty these two have towards their best friends is honest and real. We get to experience the growing love that Beau and Corrie have for each other. It's sweet. It's beautiful. It's real. But as with any love it's also heartbreaking. Want to find out why? You'll just have to read to find out. I will definitely grab another book Mrs. Crompton decides to write.
Wow! My heart ached for both Corrie and Beau. Corrie is a girl who caught the eye of Beau. She’s in a different school than Beau but both fell for each other. Beau has a lot of messed up feelings that he needs to deal with but is afraid to do it till he losses the one thing that meant the world to him. Corrie was Beau everything. He lived and breathed for her but kept her in the dark about his brother Kane and his past and why he is going to meetings and not really working at the pool. The truth always comes out but how you deal with it is what matters. Great book.
I didn’t even finish this book because I don’t think I can handle another non-question sentence that ends in a question mark? Maybe that’s a normal thing in Australia but it really threw me off? But that’s not actually the real reason I stopped reading this book? At least not the only reason? In truth, the plot wasn’t that bad. Narrator Beau has a lot of anger pent up inside of him. His older brother committed suicide and that triggered a lot of feelings for Beau, mostly negative ones towards his brother who struggled with depression for a long time before deciding to take his own life. It’s great to see a novel that looks at the aftermath of suicide in this way because it is normal to feel resentment and anger towards those who kill themselves. I feel like every suicide narrative I’ve read has shown the sad parts of suicide but rarely touch on the anger and definitely never do so in such depth. I liked that Hell Bent explored this other side of life after a loved one kills himself. What was bad was the romance and the actual depth of the characters. Beau’s girlfriend Corrie is so one dimensional it physically hurt me to read her dialogue. They don’t even know each other but they’re in love. The relationship isn’t underdeveloped it’s non-existent. I’m sorry but I can’t buy that this notoriously angry player sees a girl from across the room and all of a sudden turns into a faithful boyfriend. Or that this girl would be okay running into all his ex-one night stands. Their romance happens so fast with absolutely no substance that it’s hard to root for them or care when they fight. It’s not like their relationship was built on much (I mean, he’s not even being honest with her from the get go) so it was inevitable that they’d have a falling out. Which I’m assuming happens because I didn’t get far enough into this book to even know that. So the suicide plot is really good (in the sense that it is well developed and interesting, not that it’s ‘good’ per se) and everything else about this book is really bad. I was disappointed to find a shallow MC that was never likeable to me because he was too flat of a character. The females in this book are annoying and pointless because they do nothing to enhance the story. I feel like reading the 153 pages of this book I could actually get through was a waste of my time. Highly do not recommend.
I received a complimentary e-copy of Hell Bent in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely loved this book. I loved that it was from Beau's point of view. He's so far from perfect but I could tell right away that he had some deep issues that was the cause of him acting the way he did and I loved that one girl was enough for him to try to be a better person. Corrie did not make things easy of him - she had her own issues to deal with but together, what a team they made.
I, like Corrie, wish that Beau had been honest with her about everything instead of having the big stuff come out the way it did!!!
Love the angst, and I was even ok with Beau hitting rock bottom so that the only place he could go was up!!!
Great job Karen Crompton... I love that Hell Bent is the first of the South Shore Beach series, because I want more!!!
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. Sadly, it was awful. There's not much in terms of a redeeming story line to go with the profanity and "super intense, hot love" or whatever the author was going for. It was predictable but not even a good predictable bc would the girl really be that upset by the info she finds out? In fact, I was so disappointed in Corrie for falling for this "bad boy" and acting like a mess herself with no standards that I didn't care if they didn't make it work. I'll say it like I've said it before-teen readers deserve more. Don't underestimate them; give them something with substance!
It's not that often I get the opportunity to read an Aussie book on Netgalley, but when they do come along I almost always enjoy them. There's something refreshing about the subtle differences in locations, language and culture that make the book that little bit more interesting. Crompton's Young Adult romance is a great example of Australian fiction, full of larger-than-life characters, witty dialogue and real-life issues. I look forward to reading more from this emerging author.
I enjoyed this read. The storyline was a bit predictable, even with the darker secrets. It was an easy, fast read, but not one that stuck with you afterwards. Every once in awhile I need a book like this.
Grief is portrayed realistically in this solid, if predictable story but I was so disappointed when the secrets behind the story were revealed too soon, leaving little to look forward too. Full review: http://crushingcinders.com/hell-bent-...
I was fortunate to get a copy of this book from the author via Facebook. I loved this book! I have not cried so much at a book since the last time I read a Colleen Hoover book! It was slow to start but - wham! Once you're in, you can't stop! Thanks for the great read a great cry!
Hell Bent (South Shore Beach, #1) - kept me enthralled and turning the pages. I stayed up really late to finish it because I needed to know what happened. Beau is your typical bad boy - smokes, drinks, sleeps around, but he is the bad boy because of something that happened and that he saw in his life. He is spiralling out of control, and no one seems to know how to help him, possibly because his parents need to deal with their own grief as well. He has court and gets community service, but is told he needs to straighten up before he is 18 or he will be in jail. He has to work at a local pool and go to some AA meetings. His first day at the pool, he sees a beautiful young lady, Corrie. He tries to talk to her, but she kind of blows him off. He doesn't give up and is surprised when he really wants to get to know her and go on a date with her. He has never been on a date before. Corrie eventually agrees to a "date", but she chooses what they will do. They both know and admit they like the other. Corrie has some dark things that have happened in her life, but she opens up and tells Beau about them. Beau does not want to burden her with his life story. Will Beau be able to change his ways for Corrie? Will Corrie be able to forgive Beau for things in his past? There is much heart break in this book. Will Beau ever be able to face and deal with his grief over losing his brother Kane? I hated the way Liam treated Beau, and went out of his way to make him look bad in front of Corrie. But that also seemed to be the point Beau needed to get to to admit he needed help. This book has all the feels. At times I was a little surprised that these high school kids had all the freedom and liberties they did. I can not wait to read the second part of this, and to read more books by Karen Compton.
Beau Huntington's life turned upside down when he lost his brother Kane and now he is spiraling out of control with drinking and violence but it has finally caught up with him. Now Beau must pay for his mistakes with community hours and AA meetings.
Yet nothing changes his life until he meets Corrie Johnson who makes him see things differently and turns his world upside down.
But demons can be hard to overcome and will Corrie be enough to give Beau the strength to turn his life around?
This was a really good book that tackles so many issues.
I liked Beau as I knew deep down he was hurting so much from events of the past that he was afraid to get attached to anything and just didn't know how to deal with everything that he went through. It was also clear that Beau really didn't think he had any issues and never wanted to open up to anyone.
Corrie was interesting in that she had her own past and had to work hard with her swimming. She wasn't looking for a relationship and it seemed to distract her a little from her goals. I liked her strong nature and she was someone who truly cared about those around her.
It was clear that Corrie was a great influence on Beau but the demons that Beau had inside him were still so strong and he had to figure out for himself how to overcome them all. There were a few times when he was acting with his fists which really bothered Corrie.
I was so mad at Liam for revealing things and I felt bad that Beau never spoke about them to Corrie before hand. I knew why he was worried but he really needed to trust Corrie and he never gave her that opportunity.
I loved when Beau realized what he needed to do and put his life back together for himself!
The end was awesome and very sentimental!! Loved it!
Hell Bent is a story that definitely takes you by surprise. It's a love story of young adults both going through some serious and tough issues. It takes a look at love, loss, and family in a way that you can't help but relate to at least one of the characters in it and love the other. Beau is the bad boy of the beach and school. Getting into trouble, drinking, sleeping around and surfing until he goes one step too far and ends up getting community service for his dues instead of a jail sentence. Corrie has a tough time at home and wants absolutely nothing to do with Beau even though she's managed to catch his eye. Try as she might even she's not immune to his charms. Maybe he will change for her... maybe he won't. You have to read to find out if they end up together and are able to over come the major issues that are plaguing both of their young lives. This is one story you won't be sorry you read till the end. Well done Karen Crompton! Well done!
Beau Huntington has a life spinning out of control. His family has turned quite dysfunctional since the suicide of his older brother. Beau is angry and confused and takes out his anger with drinking, girls and fighting anyone and everyone, until the courts threaten to lock him away right before his 18th birthday. Beau then meets Corrie Johnson and she turns his world upside down.
I just loved this book. I'm a sucker for a good romance. Beau is your typical high school playboy, but it takes him meeting Corrie to work beyond the bad boy exterior so that he can move beyond the struggles he's truly facing. This book took me through a turmoil of happiness, anger, sadness, and joy. I literally cried through parts and laughed out loud through others. I highly recommend this book, and I can't wait to read the next one in the series!
This was a very angsty read about a family that doesn't know how to deal with the death of a loved one. Even though Beau and Corrie are the main characters, you get to see how Beau's family deals with the death of his brother and it's chaotic and out of control. Beau drinks, fights and screws to deal with his problems until Corrie comes around and changes his world. This story is well written and heartbreaking. You will definitely be left with lots of feels after reading.
Beau and Corrie's story is one that you feel is real. The issues brought up in the book are emotional and are things people deal with in their everyday lives. It's raw but it is healing. You can understand the grief and where the characters are coming from. It took me a little while to get used to the some of the slang used...but I figured it out! This was my first time reading a book from Karen Crompton but it will definitely not be the last!
WHOA!! OH! MY!! HELL BENT by Karen Crompton BLEW ME AWAY!! It was So Beautifully Written with So much Obstacles in a Teenage Life of Beau Huntington. The Dark Secrets he keeps inside of himself without some help dealing with the emotional turmoil. Instead he rather self destruct and drag his family down with him. Then one day comes along Corrie Johnson and knocks him off his stupor. She makes him want to become a Better Guy moving forward with his life with her along his side. Their Storytelling was such an Emotional Rollercoaster Ride of Epic Proportions and Loved Every Minute of This BOOK!! A MUST READ and CANNOT WAIT for More from Karen Crompton!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Beau has had it tough since he lost his brother. He seems to like to play just about i the edge for he doesn’t care about much now. That is until he meets Corrie and falls for her quickly. It’s still a rough road for both of them but they have some great times as well. This books has a lot of moments but it keeps you on your toes as you read through it. I love Rake and Alana and the parents of beau and corrie mom.
Hell Bent by Karen Crompton was the first book I have read from this author and I enjoying reading it and look forward to reading more. This is a well written YA romance. Beau is a typical bad boy who is dealing with some dark but real life issues. Once he meets Corrie his world changes. This was an emotional read that will make you sad and make you smile. I look forward to the next book.
This book was definitely an emotional read however is was fantastic. It’s about first love and loss. I literally stayed up all night just to see how this story ended and trust me, you won’t be disappointed. This is my first book by this author but it definitely won’t be my last. I am looking forward to what comes next from this author. Definitely recommended.
This was my first time reading Karen Crompton and so happy I jumped in and read this roller coaster of a 2 part series. I was in from the start to finish. I loved the journey of Beau meeting Corrie. It was a dark sad heartbreaking story but love how they grew and blossomed in the story. I would highly recommend this series.
Hell Bent is book 1 in the South Shore Beach series. Beau has issues and has to shape up. He meets Corrie while trying to be better. Corrie changes up his world. This story is emotional and you may need some tissues. I loved how the author put in real life issues and loved how it flowed. All the characters were great.
A well-written story that I enjoyed reading. South Shore’s bad boy surfer Beau Huntington and Corrie Johnson's story was one I was not putting until I was finished it. I received a copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
Such a love story filled with tragedy and rebuilding. Beau has been through a lot. The playboy falls for a simple girl while he’s fighting to find himself. It’s sad but also eye opening.
It starts off where you want to be so mad at the bad boy surfer Beau and his one night stands and the drugs and drinking. Then Carrie comes into the picture and changes things for the better but wow, can life go out of control in a blink of and eye. Love and death goes with story.
A friendship that builds into something more. Beau and Corrie’s story was beautifully written. A love story that deals with many life changing issues and how people can move forward. A great read. Highly recommend!!
I really like reading Karen Crompton books. She writes in a way that draws me in and I find myself cheering and worrying about her characters, as if they are real. The story feels real. I like that.
Loved this book! There was some insta love from how quickly Beau went from his "bad boy" ways to being completely devoted to Corrie. Karen Crompton knows how to write! I've already started Heaven Sent.
