Exhaustive coverage of pursuing a career as an Indie writer.

SK Quinn means every word she says. And I am yet to see someone understand the highs and lows of pursuing a literary career (in that, an indie literary career) like she does. Well structured from having a mission statement as a writer to marketing multiple books. There were parts where I disagreed with her, especially about Social media. But then everyone's journey is different! If you are a writer embarking on the Indie Journey, this is a must read!

If you can only read one self-publishing guide, this should be the one. I am one of those people who loves to write but has a nervous breakdown at the thought of everything involved in self-publishing. As a result, I've read my fair share of how-to books and this one resonates the most. S.K. Quinn writes from experience and she does so in a way that is both engaging and also easy to follow. Boot Camp is broken down into logical steps and provides both practical anecdotes as well as much needed encouragement. It gives warnings for those of us who would dare to buck the trends and supports our outlandish dreams with a healthy dose of reality. That's what I enjoyed most about Boot Camp. It recognises that no two writers are the same and caters to everyone in between. Unlike some books that prescribe certain methods of publishing and make you think if it's not working for you than there's something wrong with you or your book, Boot Camp acknowledges that the market prefers certain stories and genres over others. It asks the reader/writer to take ownership of their journey and be honest about what they want to achieve and what they may have to do to get there. Writing to market isn't for everyone (it certainly isn't for me) but it's what might have to be done if you're in this for money rather than love. What Boot Camp made me realise is that it's okay not to write simply for money. That my stories might sell for love, perhaps not at the same quantity, but that's okay. Boot Camp is a fantastic guide that I will be referring to repeatedly. Not only did it give me great tips, it also made me hopeful that hard work will eventually pay off.

The 10 Step Self-Publishing BOOT CAMP book had a lot of helpful tips for pushing forward with a self-publishing career. Granted, since I've just finished the book, I can't say how many of the practices have been helpful for me, but there are several I want to try. I appreciated how in-depth S.K. Quinn went regarding her methods, and that she had information to back up her suggestions (as well as the caveat that, of course, the market is constantly changing and what works at the moment might not work later). She brought several ideas and methods to light that I hadn't tried or been aware of, and I look forward to testing them. Thus far, I feel it was well-worth the read.

I read this after reading an incredibly detailed book on the subject. This one felt more like a "You can do it!" sort of book, and I tend to not appreciate the encouraging books. I wanted a more up-to-date version of the detailed book - and instead, this book effectively said, "All that stuff you just read? Throw it out the window!"
There were a number of places in the book when I wished the author had camped on a subject a little longer, or explained it in a way that communicated to me better. One that comes to mind is the whole "SMARTurl" bit. The information may have been there but I didn't catch it. I was also frustrated that the book included links that weren't links or URLs, they were just "Here's the link."
But, because her information is more up-to-date than the very detailed book was, unless I find another book that communicates more in my lingo, I'll be following at least a good chunk of her advice.

An excellent field guide for the new author seeking to plunge into the daunting jungles of self-publishing. The author has put together a tidy and easy to read guide that covers quite the gamut of things an aspiring author should know, if they're thinking about publishing a book themselves. I wish I had access to a book like this when I first set out to write and publish. I would've avoided many pitfalls and misconceptions. And even though I had already taken the step to self-publish, I still found this book to be replete with good advice and I came away from the read all the wiser. I highly recommend it.

An inspiration for indie writers

I have been pursuing traditional publishing for years. My debut YA novel landed me a literary agent but after being on submission to publishers off and on for two years, it never sold. I decided to self-publish it because it's the book of my heart and I just want it to be out there for people to read. This book inspired me and made me excited to begin my journey as an indie writer. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is considering self-publishing.

I read this book based on a recommendation from one of the Facebook groups I belong to, and before you ask- no I don't remember which one. I've read a few other how-to books, but this one has been one of the best so far. Her casual style made me comfortable and I felt like we were talking over drinks. She was never condescending and I did not feel like she was bragging. I like that she talked about her personal stories, but she also included success stories from other people. I learned a ton in the couple of hours it took me to read this.

This book is AMAZING! I have been debating whether to go the indie publishing route or to keep trying the traditional publishing route for quite some time. This book finally gave me the courage and info I needed to take the right step for me. Thank you S. K. Quinn for writing this. Your selfless service to the writing community is so very much appreciated! I just wish all my writer friends still doubting themselves because of the broken traditional publishing model would read this.

I highly recommend this book for the beginning author since it walks you through many of the current best practices to turn your manuscript into a book-for-sale. There's not as much there for the intermediate author, but I still found a few useful tips (mostly book recommendations for further reading).

Great Book on Self-Publishing

A tremendous amount of information for new writers in one book. It's a shame that it will be unpublished.

The information is well laid out and easy to understand and confirms what every author eventually learns: we must keep writing.

SK Quinn is also Susan Kaye Quinn and she has another pseudonym for her romance novels. [mission: find out what it is] She is also an actual rocket scientist with a PhD in engineering.
She has written nearly 30 novels and her books often don’t fit in a standard genre box. Hard sci-fi. Steampunk Indian princess stories. Or as she calls them, her geeky tech stories.
Her original aim was to make enough to put her sons through college.
Any income from her pen-name goes to a ‘special project’.
She’s one of those indie authors who shares her info (often for free) and I like her for it. Being a scientist, she also looks at results and data. There are a lot of tables, graphs and links to other articles or videos. She also has a facebook group set up as a kind of writers’ community.
I heard her recently on The Bestseller Experiment podcast. Sue had SO much info they had to let her have two sessions.

Writing Is The Answer To Everything Stressed about sales? Write. Afraid this indie thing was a complete mistake? Write. Terrified that your book not selling means you're a hack after all? Write. (Kindle Locations 3390-3393).

With writing help books, the information is often current when it was published. And the same is true with a lot of her step-by-step instructions. Indie publishing is a fast changing world. [too fast for the trad publishers to keep up]. But there is also a lot about getting the basics right. Why do you write? Work out that five year plan. Be sensible. Avoid scammers.
It’s all great advice.
Lastly, she tells a story about attending a local school writing workshop. Talking to 4th graders:
A small girl is looking at me intensely, so I turn to her. “What are you going to write about?”
She doesn't say anything.
“You don't have to share,” I say, lowering my Robin-Williams-volume. “Just write it.”
She hesitates. Then she says in this tiny voice, smaller even than she is, “Can I write about brain vs. body? Because the brain wants to live by itself and learn new things and go out into the world, but it can't because it needs the body and the body doesn't want to go. The body is afraid.”
“Yes,” I say, stunned. “Yes. Definitely write about that.”(Kindle Locations 3712-3717).

Wow. Keep an eye out for that kid. Sue is clearly an inspiring person as one of her sons is 18 and publishing his own novels, too. She laughs that he doesn’t have the doubts she still struggles with every day, largely because he sees her doing it.

10 steps to launching a self-published book, and the smaller steps that make up those 10 big ones.

I read this from cover to cover, in small increments over a long period of time to give myself a strong foundation to build on. this is definitely going to be a book I pick up and re-read specific sections. There is a wealth of knowledge in its pages.
