This is a very clever short tale that reveals that Mr. Hurst is much more than a worthless sot and actually attentive to all things. Thanks to an excellent valet who keeps Hurst apprised of all the below stairs gossip Hurst is immediately aware that the whole town hates Darcy for his disdain of Miss Elizabeth and interjects himself into drama by informing Darcy. While appearing to drink his spirits get dumped into a potted plant; while pretending to sleep he keeps an eye on his wife and sister. His interference move us toward an earlier and faster HEA.
Mr. Hurst proves that it is amazing what one can hear when no one thinks you are listening. Luckily for Elizabeth and Darcy he decided to speak up. This is a fun short story!
A short Pride and Prejudice variation where Hurst proves he is more than a gentleman who spends his time drinking and eating. Helping Darcy to an early HEA. A nicely written enjoyable short story (a re-read)
Mr Hurst is one of the most minor characters in the original book so this is his big chance. It turns out he enjoys gossip as much as his wife and sister-in-law but unlike them he uses his knowledge for good.
