Joyful Trouble is a delightful children’s book based on the story of Trouble, a Great Dane enlisted in the Royal Navy. When Ana and Tommy go with their grandfather to a parade celebrating Joyful Trouble, they want to know his story. Throughout the following chapters, Grandad tells them stories of Trouble, the dog he knew in the Navy.

I really enjoyed this book, not just the story of Joyful Trouble, but the lessons built into this book about dogs. As Grandad was telling Trouble’s story, he was also teaching the kids valuable information about our canine friends. In this book, kids learn how to approach a dog, and they learn about the incredible senses of smell and hearing that dogs possess. They are also told about the many jobs dogs occupied in World War II, and lots of other facts and information about our incredible companion, the dog. This is a really wonderful, educational story. We learn about the special bonds between dogs and humans, and we see that bond between Joyful Trouble and Grandad. The author has a wonderful gift for telling interesting stories that also teach.

Children will love this book, but it is longer (225 pages) and I feel it is set up for parents to read to them, possibly a chapter or two at bedtime. I highly recommend this to parents, children, and dog lovers.

4.5 stars.

I downloaded a copy of this book on Kindle Unlimited, where subscribers can read it for free.

Review from Endija, aged 10.

This book is based on the true story of a dog called Joyful Trouble. There are three main characters: five year-old Tommy, his nine-year-old sister Anna, and their grandad. When they see a Great Dane in a parade, Grandad tells the kids the story of a dog he loved, called Joyful Trouble. He remembers being in the Navy during WWII and meeting the dog on the way to work one day.

Joyful Trouble was a mischievous but very helpful dog. The seamen got to know and love him and the dog was soon part of the crew. Joyful Trouble and Grandad were good friends and were put to work together. Along the way, the dog meets new friends, loses old ones and still is very happy. He causes a lot of trouble (that's how he got his name) but also stops fights and commotion. In this book, Grandad is the story-teller and Anna and Tommy are the very eager listeners.

I love this book and it made me happy and, at some parts, sad. It is also a bit funny. The reason I love it so much is because I love dogs and true stories. I hope others will also enjoy it. I would recommend it for ages 8+.

JOYFUL TROUBLE by Patricia Furstenberg is a beautiful tale that will make you smile and make you sad at different moments throughout but most of all it will make you feel, and while it is certainly great for children, it is just as perfect for adults too.

Told from the point of view of Grandfather, we hear the tale of a very special great dane called Joyful Trouble as Grandad tells it to his two grandchildren. From the moment this amazing dog arrives at the Navy base, he is getting himself into mischief, some of it hilarious, and he soon becomes so important to so many people with his wonderful ways. But he is not always helpful and somebody wants to be rid of him for good ...

The action is quirky, delightful, and thoroughly enjoyable, and my children loved this story from start to finish. It raises important topics in a gentle and childlike way which is a wonderful way to start conversations with younger children who are beginning to learn about the real world and how life isn't always simple. This book also made my kids desperate for a dog so thanks for that Patricia Furstenberg 😉

JOYFUL TROUBLE by Patricia Furstenberg is a wonderful children's book with characters and action that will keep a child hooked from the very beginning, and a charming read for adults too. Definitely a must-read for 2018.

Ana and Tommy, aged 9 and 5, are staying with their grandparents. Their grandfather is telling them a story of 'Trouble', a Great Dane dog who was signed up to join the Navy – and this is based on a true story – yes, really! This reality made the story for me. I must admit that it's not the most gripping of children's stories, but knowing that there was an element of reality and truth to the story, it gave additional intrigue. Trouble, later to be named Joyful Trouble, is a big slobbery dog who loves to hang around with the seamen of Simon's Town near Cape Town. Being such a lovable dog he was adopted as 'one of their own' by the seamen and travelled, slept and ate with them.

The two children are lovely to hear about, especially inquisitive and spirited 5 year old Tommy, and the dialogue presents polite, well spoken children. The grandfather is with the children for the whole of the time in the book so there is always adult talk and guidance. The grandmother is fairly stereo-typical, cooking, feeding the children and preparing picnics etc., but an obvious stable character for children.

For UK readers, just be aware that this is written by in South African English and is, at times, a little strange to our ears.

This is a fictional book, based on the true story of a Great Dane named Joyful Trouble, and his time during WWII.

Brother and sister, Tommy (4), and Ana (9), were staying with their grandparents. After visiting the annual parade that commemorates Joyful Troubles life, the children returned home excited.

When it was time for bed, the siblings ask their grandfather to tell them the story of how he met Joyful Trouble, and their time together during WWII.

There have been plenty of stories about animals that have been in wars, including pigeons, horses, and even rats, but I’d never heard one about a dog before.

Joyful Trouble, is just as his namesake, he was a lot of fun, and brought joy to the seaman in the Navy, he was also a very mischievous dog too.

The story will have you reading in awe at the friendship that the grandfather and Joyful Trouble had. Over the years the Great Dane had many adventures, and did an amazing job.

The book does have undertones of sadness, but you can’t really write a story involving a war that doesn’t have any sadness in it. It is also a very moving, poignant story, that I’m sure people will take into their hearts, and never forget.

It is a slow, yet short read. Most children love an animal themed book, so this will be a hit with them. It will also have them learning about a history via a lovable, enjoyable, story.

Set in South Africa this is a wonderful uplifting children’s story which can be read by the child independently or by an adult to be listened to.
Tommy age 4 and Ana age 9 have gone to stay with their grandparents which just happens to be at the same time as the town’s 1st April Parade, a yearly event that celebrates the life of Joyful Trouble, a Great Dane that lived in Simon’s town through most of WW11.
Grandad takes the children to the parade, where great danes happily march down the road with their proud owners. That night Ana asks grandad to tell her and Tommy about how he first met Joyful Trouble and what begins as one story becomes a string of heart warming  adventures and at times mischievous and very funny cappers that this very special dog got up to and grandad too of course.
I won’t tell you about these because I want you to fall in love with this unique dog and this lovely man that is the children’s grandad. They are both very special. I loved these little stories myself, how Patricia Furstenberg descriptions are so simple and yet capture the whole essence of the love most of the town felt for this dog. Of course there is always ‘the Jobs Worth’ that won’t bend the rules but where there is a will there is a way. The name Joyful Trouble just sums this lovely dog up perfectly.
Reading this book brought back sweet childhood memories of times my mother would tell me and my brother bedtime stories of when she was a young girl. It warmed my heart. A super book to be enjoyed by any age.

This is a lovely book for all ages, but particularly for children as they are introduced to not just Joyful Trouble and his extraordinary story, but also dogs in general with their amazing abilities and their special bond with humans. This involves some valuable lessons on how best to treat man’s best friend with kindness and respect with the wider view as to how we as humans should behave towards each other.

Great Danes are massive dogs and when they get into trouble, it is difficult not to miss it. Joyful has already bonded with a little boy who goes to boarding school, leaving his best friend behind, which leads to the dog wandering the town and connecting with sailors from the naval base and accompanying them on their trips into Cape Town on the train when off duty. Clearly not appreciated by everyone including grumpy ticket inspectors.

However, a high ranking naval officer sees a solution and this leads to the true story of the enlistment of Joyful Trouble into the Royal Navy. There are several escapades that follow, and it is a wonderful story of how animals and humans find companionship and solace in a time of war, when young men leave home and find themselves in a very rigid and unfamiliar environment. Anyone who has ever been owned by a dog will love the book as well as the characters of Grandad,Tommy and Ana, who are the delightful recipients of his stories of this wonderful dog he was given responsibility for.

At the end of the book, as an added treat, there are some recipes for Vetoek a traditional fried dough bread and some delicious sounding lemon and cinnamon cookies. There is also an introduction to the poem Jock of the Bushveld that will delight any child as they sample the cookies.

This book is the perfect book for children to read themselves; it’s recommended for grades K- 4. Children would also be delighted to have someone read it to them. The story of Joyful Trouble shows children the importance of friendship, family, love and understanding. But the kids will just think they are reading or hearing a wonderful tale!

The story begins on April 1 in South Africa. We meet Ana, 9 years old, and big sister to Tommy, who is almost 5. Ana is a loving and dutiful child who admires her parents and enjoys helping her younger brother. The children are with their Grandpa, sharing an exciting day together. They are enjoying the festivities of a parade in honor of Joyful Trouble. Joyful Trouble was a dog, and so much more- a Great Dane and Ordinary Seaman. There is even a brass statue in his honor.

Trouble had been a friend to many. He served in the Royal Navy between 1939- 1944. (His first name, Joyful was added when he was enrolled in the Navy.) As a Navy mascot, Joyful Trouble boosted the morale of many seamen in the South Atlantic during World War II. He was at his happiest when everyone was getting along.

After the parade, over the course of several days, Grandpa tells the story of Joyful Trouble to his grandchildren. The story is a fun one that children will enjoy. And in a positive, easy way, the virtues of love, friendship, and understanding are blended in. Grandpa is a good companion to the children. Grandma’s stew is made with love. Dad works hard and Mom is a good role model.

Young readers will also get to learn about World War II, but in a non-threatening way. As Grandpa says, “Determination and faith, Ana, will always get you through the tough times.”

The story is charming and well-written. I loved the cover, with the Great Dane and his seaman’s cap. The main characters in the book are easy to get to know and love. Highly recommend.

What an amazingly delightful and fun true story about a dog!! I am a sucker for true stories about brave animals and this story found its way into my heart. This is a powerful story full of warmth and sadness. There are some feelers in this story, but it will fill you with such love and compassion for this incredible animal. This is remarkable read that parents and children alike will fall in love with and it would make a phenomenal bedtime read. I highly recommend it.

The author provided me with a digital ARC copy of the book for review purposes only. No remuneration was exchanged.

"With him there, amongst us, we all felt more like a family and less like soldiers. Joyful Trouble's presence was like an assurance that, one day, we will all have our own dogs, our own families, our own civilian lives back."

I picked up this book intending to just read the first chapter to get a feel for it. I was utterly sucked in and I am completely in love with Joyful Trouble - what a dog! A story told from one retired navy grandad to his young grandchildren, this tells the story of a dog who became officially inducted into the Royal Navy in 1939.

I absolutely love the way this is told - it rings true for many grandparents and their grandchildren and is heart-warming (and heart-breaking) in that honest, simple kind of delivery. Many of the stories of War forget to mention the contribution of animals but this story embraces the many facets of how integral animals, particularly dogs, were to morale.

Incidentally, the book features a number of lovely illustrations to help visualise the setting, a map of where Joyful Trouble has travelled whilst he's been up to mischief, and a little ladybird for younger readers to keep an eye out for on each of the drawings. A nice touch to cater for a variety of ages.

If you consider yourself an animal lover, then this is the book for you and your tiny humans - or even just for you! I won't forget Joyful Trouble's story for quite some time. A beautifully written, heart-warming and fun story for any animal lover and a reminder that our four legged friends are family, and a piece of home, too.

Many thanks to the author who kindly provided an e-copy of this book for me for review.

Joyful Trouble is the true story of a Great Dane dog who spent five years in the Royal Navy in South Africa from 1939-1944. The story is told over time from Grandad's point of view to his two grandchildren, Ana (9) and Tommy (almost 5). Grandad served in the Royal Navy. Some of his tasks included making sure Joyful Trouble was regularly washed, kept his sailor cap and collar, and ensured that the dog stayed under control.

Joyful Trouble possessed many skills that made him a treasured mascot of the other seamen. He cheered them up when they were sad, guided them home when they had too much to drink at the local tavern, broke up fights between navy men, and even spotted enemy submarines while flying in an airplane.

Patricia Furstenberg creates a wonderful relationship between the Grandad and his grandchildren. Grandad not only teaches his grandchildren about Joyful Trouble, but he also explains mature concepts such as empathy and being a humanitarian. Both Ana and Tommy were likable characters. Tommy provides plenty of entertainment throughout with his love of playing in mud puddles and his funny use of vocabulary.

I would describe Joyful Trouble as a children's book for mature readers. It deals with some sophisticated topics in a sensitive manner, including Joyful Trouble's passing at age seven.

What an absolutely delightful and gentle book!! It is geared for children 6 - 10 but most adults would love this one too. Read the author's synopsis below--it says it all--better then I ever could.

"It is a story about the meaningful relationship between dogs and humans, but also between grandchildren and their grandfathers. It is a look at life through a child’s eyes, but also through those of a grandpa."

There is so much love that shines through every page!! This book should be in every school library!!

Patricia tells the tale of the friendly great dane with a heart of gold through the eyes of a patient and loving grandfather who sprinkles his wonderful story with lots of wise advice.

“Determination and faith, Ana, will always get you through tough times. Always”

The key story points are cleverly repeated in answers to young Ana and Tommy's questions, an ingenious way to get the message across without patronising the reader.

The idea of a dog (no ordinary sea dog!) called Trouble is enticing and the fact that it is based on a true story makes the book all the more enchanting. Joyful Trouble is further bolstered by beautiful illustrations (see above and below for two samples kindly provided by the author who is obviously extremely talented as she did these too!)

The children I asked to read this story for my review were fired up by the power of petition and how, by joining forces, the able seamen in Patricia's lovely novel are able to save the friendly great dane from a terrible fate.

As far as children’s books go this is a really lovely, fun, and sweet story. It’s a story told from the viewpoint of a man telling his grandchildren about a beautiful Great Dane dog who adopted a navy base as his friend and companion. He became the responsibility of the granddad of the story who talks about the many adventures that he has throughout his life including those where Joyful Trouble would get himself into trouble (hence his name).

The writing and description of Furstenberg is delightful to read. It’s a story that can be read by children or read to children. I know a young child who loves dogs and she would really love this book. Adults can also read it and enjoy the story and adventures within. To find out what happens to Joyful Trouble you will have to find out for yourself. You won’t be disappointed.

This is a wonderful story which tells a wonderful tale about a military service dog whose efforts will warm your heart. As a dog lover and trainer, it never seems to surprise me how loyal and dedicated ordinary dogs are. They make such a wonderful impact in our lives. However, when these dogs are serving alongside our soldiers and sailors, defending our country, their heroic tales are more inspirational. I think the author tells this story very well. It is relatable and I'm sure many children will gain a lot from reading it. It is a great read for adults too!

This story is not as exciting as I would have liked it to be, never the less, it is an interesting tale. There aren’t many adventures involved but I guess that’s okay because not every kid is adventurous.

Each kid is different and will have their different likes and dislikes. So for children of this age group who loves dogs or who have other pets, this would be a fun read for them, it is a mild children story not too much on the exciting side. It is interesting none the less and I am sure others would think so, give it a try it might just surprise you.

What a sweet, happy children’s book! Joyful Trouble is a fictional tale, based on a real dog and real events, who was enlisted as a Seaman in the Royal Navy. The story begins with young Ana and Tommy attending a parade with their Grandpa. The annual festivities are in honor of a Great Dane named Joyful Trouble. After Ana comes face to face with one of the big, sweet Great Danes, her Grandpa begins telling her and her little brother the story of Joyful Trouble and how he came to be enlisted in the Royal Navy.

If a book relates to a dog or dogs, then chances are I’m already sold on it, but I really, truly enjoyed this story. There were funny, happy, sad, and frustrating moments as Grandpa tells the children all about Joyful Trouble, but in the end, it was completely heartwarming. There were so many lessons and themes:

Doing right versus wrong
Mistakes and mischief are o.k. from time to time
The bonds between grandparents and grandchildren
The importance of stories passed down through generations
Dogs, like people, enjoy having jobs
Dogs sustain injuries, get better, get sick, etc. – but they eventually finish their lives and die.
Dogs enjoy canine companions and having children, just as people do
Bravery isn’t just for people because dogs do brave things all the time
Honestly, I could go on and on with lessons and themes related to this story and hope that anyone with an elementary aged child reading this review will encourage them to read this. Considering that was a teacher for 13 years, I also see a ton of lesson ideas with this novel, starting with researching Justice Nuisance that was a real Great Dane enlisted in the Royal Navy.

Patricia Furstenberg’s writing is just full of happiness, joy, and love. She has the ability to touch on important and sometimes sensitive topics in a respectful and gentle way appropriate for children. While reading, it just appears as interesting and entertaining, but in all of her writings that I have read, there is so much moral fiber and lessons intertwined within her magical words!

*Many thanks to the author for providing me a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

This was pretty interesting. I thought that I wasn’t going to enjoy this but I really did. It was a nice little break from all the fantasy that I’ve been reading and I really thought the way the author told the story was a great idea.

I thought I would have wanted it told from that timeline, as something going on at that moment but, the Grandpa telling the story just had this bit of nostalgic feeling to it.

The cover is…not very eye-catching for me but maybe it’s a good to catch a child’s eye, it is geared toward that audience. The writing was simple but detailed just enough that I could see what was going on.

It’s geared for the six – 10 year old range but I also believe that adults would find it a nice, quick little read, take a break from every day things and go back to their childhood for a short time.

I also love that it highlights the Great Danes and shows that even though they are massive dogs, they are gentle giants.

Thank you for reading my review.

When I started this book, I was ready to cry to my heart's content, considering this book was based on a dog. But instead, I came across a sweet, humorous and fun read.

This book is based on a true story of Able Seaman "Just Nuisance", the only dog ever to be officially enlisted in the Royal Navy. He served with HMS Afrikander, a Royal Navy naval base in Simon’s Town, South Africa, during the WWII.

Just Nuisance

Coming back to the book, Patricia has taken inspiration from the story of Just Nuisance and written a beautiful and oh so refreshing tale of friendship, loyalty, and love.

In the book, the story of "Joyful Trouble", a mischievous but a very friendly and helpful Great Dane is narrated by a granddad to his 2 grandchildren, 9-year-old Anna and 5-year-old Tommy.

Trouble was a friend of the entire Simon's town, especially the seamen. So much so that, he followed them everywhere, and even helped them. He was a quick-witted and (unintentionally!!!) funny dog. I couldn't stop from laughing at some of Trouble's actions, that finally got him enlisted in the Royal Navy. Even the part how Trouble got his name, was so amusing.

Being a dog person myself, I absolutely loved this book. I laughed with this book and shed a tear or two as well. Overall this was a quick and very delightful read. Even though this book is tagged as a children's book, I would recommend it to all.

Joyful Trouble is a book based on a true story of a Great Dane that served in the Navy in South Africa during WW2. The story is told by a grandfather to his two grandchildren, 5 year old Tommy and 9 year old Anna.
Throughout the book you get the sense of how proud the grandfather had been serving in the Navy and being given the responsibility of looking after Joyful Trouble once he had enlisted. You also saw the love between the grandfather and the grandchildren.
Despite this being a book for children I found myself chuckling at times reading about some of the things that the dog got up to that resulted in him effectively being adopted by the Navy (such as the seamen trying to hide him on the trains to stop him being thrown off in order to save him from being destroyed. As a big dog lover (I have 4 that are currently lounging on my sofas as I write this) it was really nice to read a story that showed how much fun and joy a dog can bring into someone’s life, even down to the toy dog that Tommy takes everywhere with him.
Overall this is a very charming book that I would recommend to any of my friends with children. I could even see a resemblance between Anna’s inquisitive questioning and my friends granddaughter. I think that it is best suited for children aged around 6 – 7, the pace and the language used is one that will keep them engaged in the story until the end.

Cute and bubbly, this is book for little ones is all about friendship.

When Ana and Tommy go to a parade, their Grandad starts to narrate a story of his encounters with a Great Dane, Joyful Trouble, and the adventures they get up to together.

The story was sweet and the message strong. There were moments of comedy and verve sewn into the writing, and the book itself was a fun read. The narration structure was, however, a little overwhelming for a children's book, so that my young readers lost the threads of the story. A straightforward narrative or a less alternating narration may have suited the book better and kept the story at the forefront of the writing. Overall, a good read.

A humorous read about an incredible dog and how he had found his true, yet unexpected calling. A dog. A friendship. A purpose. When a Great Dane arrives in a navy base nobody expects him to win everybody’s hearts, although breaking some rules along the way. But things soon turn sour as somebody threatens to put him to sleep. Who will stand up for this for-legged gentle giant? Tackling universal themes and voicing animal rights and the importance of fighting for what is right.

The author Patricia Furstenburg contacted me via my blog to review her book for an honest review.

Patricia came to writing through her passion for reading, which she inherited from her parents. She wrote Joyful Trouble as she found it hard to find books that her children were interested in.

The story of Trouble the Great Dane is told by Ana and Tommys grandfather, the story he tells them is set in World War II.

Trouble is aptly named as he is always hopping on trains and travelling for free. One day the children's grandfather tells them that he meets Trouble on a train and so the story of a man and dog begins.

This story is based on a true story, and is wonderfully told through the eyes of the grandfather telling his grandchildren about the dog and his time at sea in the war.

Patricia captures the innocence of the children beautifully and the gentle, loveliness of their grandfather. You can almost feel how the children listen intensively to their grandfathers stories.

I'd aim this book at an age range of 8+.

Well done Patricia for creating a simple yet fascinating tale.

I jumped aboard a fast paced, fun story and travelled back to my childhood. The Great Dane, Joyful Trouble, didn’t need a ticket and neither did I, but I packed plenty of imagination. Like Ana and Tommy, I sat beside my grandfather and listened to the ‘dog–faring tale’. I snuggled into my armchair: luxuriated in the heart-warming story, packed up my troubles and followed ‘the special dog’ called Joyful Trouble. I was placed in the ‘middle of the action’ with the ‘very clever dog’.

This charming story of a ‘fine dog’ is based on the true story of ‘Just Nuisance’ – a dog enlisted by the Royal Navy. Both the real and fictitious adventurers hail from Simon’s Town, in South Africa. But the spirit of the dog is brought to life by the author’s lively storytelling. I fell in love with the enthusiastic puppy and wanted to know how he got his name. I laughed out loud at the scene where the dog sat in the Commander in Chief’s chair. I applauded the dog when he received his seaman’s cap.

Besides entertaining, the story also educates children about how to deal with difficult situations. The story shows children that ‘Determination and faith …will always get you through the tough times.’ Joyful Trouble’s friends must ‘work together’ to resolve a problem thus exploring the importance of teamwork to neutralise conflict. Despite his reputation, Joyful Trouble is a good role model as he ‘didn’t like to see people fighting’. As Ana listens, she is comparing the dog to a younger sibling and learning to understand his exuberant behaviour.

Once the story was completed, I thought of the sailors stepping over the dog, and I laughed. Then I remembered that:
‘The little girl laughed and the old man laughed and the stars and the moon and all the stuffed toys at the foot of the bed laughed.’

Children will lose themselves in the story while also learning about key qualities and the cycle of life. Maybe parents will be forced to pack a picnic, the book and read the story with their children beside a rambling river. Parents may even be convinced to buy their children a dog…
The story could be narrated to young children or read independently by older children. The story is ideal to use as a springboard to discuss positive values and to emphasise understanding when dealing with younger siblings.

A True Furry Friend
I came across this little story which reminded me of home in Cape Town many years ago when my family and I visited Simon's Town and posed next to a statue built in honour of a great friend - a large Great Dane. I loved the way Ms Furstenberg retells this naval story in the setting of a grandpa and his grandchildren spending time together and he relating Joyful Trouble's story to them. I thought she did a marvellous job of this loveable dog's passing - comparing it to the little boy's kite - even I felt a tinge of sadness for this dog who touched so many lives. I highly recommend this story to be read even to younger children before going to bed, doing so in the same way the story is told - every time the little ones visit granddad, he tells them a little bit more. The chapters are just the right length for such a reading session. I've sent the link to my 10-year old granddaughter so that her mother can download a copy for her.

Great story, know how much dogs mean to so many people and can see why this particular dog meant so much to the sailors, very good.

Joyful Trouble by Patricia Furstenberg is a fun, fast-paced read about a Great Dane named Joyful Trouble, who befriends seamen on a naval base in South Africa and is later added to the base as a member.

The book opens with Ana and Tommy, who are nine and five, respectively, who ask their grandfather to tell them the story of Joyful Trouble.

"Doggies! I want to see the custard Danish!"
"Great Danes, Tommy. They are Great Dane."

The Great Dane easily befriends the seamen, but its unpaid rides on the train anger the ticket collectors and officials, who ask that he be put to sleep so they can get rid of him.

"The poor dog was in trouble for being a friendly, four-legged creature."

What happens after that is beautiful and according to the author based on a true story.

Joyful Trouble is enlisted as "ordinary seamen" and becomes part of the navy.

I liked how Patricia Furstenberg weaved the story of Joyful Trouble as a story within a story.

There are intermittent parts where the children ask questions, express worry or excitement about the events of the story and so on, which reminds the reader that they're not just reading about the dog but about other people as well. It also provides some comedy, especially when Tommy jumps in.

"Choo-choo train!" Exclaimed Tommy and he was soon a train himself, running along the living room, following the carpet lines like imaginary train tracks.

The characters are adorable, especially Tommy, whom I absolutely loved. He's super cute and funny and makes the book light, whereas his sister Ana is the grown up one who keeps asking her father to tell her more about Joyful Trouble and his adventures.

"I knew what was at stake."
"'Steak!' Exclaimed Tommy suddenly, wide awake. "I'm hungry!"

It is worth mentioning that the novella has several tales about Joyful Trouble, from the day the grandfather as a young seaman meets the dog till the day Joyful Trouble dies (which made me cry).

Overall, Joyful Trouble is a must read for all ages.

Overall rating: 5 stars

Joyful Trouble by author Patricia Furstenberg is a delightful story based on the true story of the first dog enlisted in the British Royal Navy in 1939 in South Africa. The story begins with a grandfather taking his ten-year-old granddaughter, Ana, and his five-year-old grandson, Tommy, to the yearly dog parade in Simon’s Town that honors the legacy of Joyful Trouble. The children watch as the marching band and parade of owners with their Great Danes proudly march through the street. There is even a statue of this legendary dog. The children are so captivated, they must once again hear the tale of Joyful Trouble.
With a twinkle in his eyes and a little embellishment, the grandfather takes us through the many adventures of this amazing dog as he lovingly and patiently takes care of the children in their daily activities. The children are so enthralled with the story, they hang on every word spoken by their doting grandfather. I don’t want to give any of this amazing story away, but I will say the relationship between the children and their grandfather is beautifully and authentically presented. One of my favorite interactions:

“Grandad, you and God are a lot a like,” whispered the little boy peering through his half closed eyes.
“Oh, how is that?”
“You are both old and loving.”

I was just as captivated by the adventures of this sociable, active, loving, and heroic dog as the children. There was a lovely parallel between how carefully and heroically Joyful Trouble took care of his friends and the care the grandfather took with his grandchildren during stressful times. I highly recommend this beautifully written story to children and adults alike.
