The Spirit of St. Dominic is the fruit of retreat conferences preached by Fr. Clerissac to his Dominican brethren in England in 1908. In these pages, Fr. Clerissac presents the spirit of St. Dominic and his Order of Preachers, illuminating how this spirit is a living treasure for the Church today as it was at its genesis. As Thomistic Institute Director Fr. Thomas Joseph White, O.P. writes in his Introduction, “a great work of theology has a perennial relevance.” Such indeed is the case with this collection of retreats given by Fr. perennially relevant, theologically beautiful. This book is based on the 1908 lectures of a French Dominican in English to Dominicans in England. I found it tough sledding. Still on the way to becoming a Lay Dominican, I had hoped this would be enlightenment for me on my journey. Rather, it seems much more geared toward "veteran" Dominicans who can appreciate the life of having been a Dominican for years. The language tends to be lofty and the concepts deep, so it requires a slower read than I cared to engage in.
Annoying was that the occasional Latin expressions were sometimes translated in the text, sometimes at the bottom of the page, and, far too often, not translated at all. Even if this was true in the original text, I cannot understand why a new edition did not translate all Latin phrases and with the identical format.
Again, recommended for the professed Dominican of many years. For the modern reader, I highly recommend the recently released "Saint Dominic's Way of Life" (https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...)
Fr. Humbert truly captures the image of the Order of Preachers and of St. Dominic. He gives a concise description of the history of the Order, their mission and what should a person from afar be expecting from the Dominicans.
As Father Humbert says: “St. Dominic made his soul an ordered unity”. This phrase truly manifests what should be our main focus in our path towards Beatitud.
